The development of a highly active and robust catalyst for the conversion of lignin, the largest volume of renewable aromatic resource in nature, to value-added aromatics is of great importance in sustainable chemistry. However, the condensation of lignin depolymerization intermediates into recalcitrant macromolecules restricts high yields of desired products, and this remains a great challenge in lignin valorization. Here, a serious of bifunctional Ru–ZnO/SBA-15 catalysts were synthesized for lignin conversion to aromatics. Roles of Ru and ZnO in these catalysts for lignin conversion were in-depth analyzed. The effect of the ratio of Ru to ZnO was studied. Other reaction conditions including temperature and time were systematically optimized. More than 51.3% yields of aromatics were obtained over Ru–10ZnO/SBA-15 at 240 °C for 4 h. Structure-activity relationship research of the catalyst revealed that the high yield of product could be attributed to the following three reasons: 1) the Lewis acidic sites on Ru/SBA-15 are significantly improved after ZnO modification, and thus promotes the C–O bond cleavage ; 2) the oxophilic ZnO is beneficial to absorb the substrate and reaction intermediates, and therefore enhances the hydrodeoxygenation activity of the adjacent Ru; 3). The interaction between Zn and Ru in Ru–ZnO/SBA-15 changes Ru electronic properties and leads to the formation of highly active catalytic sites with high electron density. These results indicated that the bifunctional Ru–ZnO/SBA-15 catalyst with high catalytic activity could be a good choice for lignin conversion to high-yield aromatics.

Efficient utilization of hydrocarbon fuels holds great significance for the current vehicle low-emission requirements and future carbon-neutral society. However, the scenario that limits the effective fuel use and combustion is the present undesirable hydrocarbon-cracking catalysts of low activity, serious coking, and easy degradation. To tackle these issues, we rationally designed and synthesized an active, anti-coking, and recyclable all-in-one zeolite@Ru–Al 2 O 3 catalyst on FeCrAl support by steam-assisted crystallization and atomic layer deposition . Ru nanoclusters dispersedly on ZSM-5 can boost the catalytic efficiency for hydrocarbon cracking and anti-coking, while the protective Al 2 O 3 thin layers further ensure the reusable economy. As for n-dodecane (C 12 H 26 ) cracking reaction, the ZSM-5@Ru–Al 2 O 3 showed a high unit activity up to 0.1253%·ml·mg −1 ·min −1 , low-carbon deposition rate, and the enhanced first-cycle carbon removal rate of 78.3% for recyclable use. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have further confirmed that high catalytic efficiency and low-carbon deposition benefit from the timely adsorption of C 12 H 26 and timely transfer of reactant products at the composite interface. This work opens interesting possibilities for the rational design and fabrication of high-efficient, anti-coking, and recyclable hydrocarbon cracking catalysts through multifunctional structural regulations.

In this work, we presented a detailed evaluation of Ru/TiO 2 (P25) catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of (chloro)-aromatics. The model catalysts were synthesized through wet impregnation. Catalytic evaluations, as well as ICP, BET, XRD and TEM analyses, were conducted. The results indicated that RuO 2 tended to be distributed on the rutile phase of TiO 2 , leading to an inhomogeneous distribution. These Ru/TiO 2 catalysts were very active, especially for chlorobenzene oxidation. The conversions of benzene and chlorobenzene were both suppressed by the introduction of additional water. But the amount of polychlorinated benzenes as by-products was also reduced. However, the activity of the catalyst significantly decreased with an increase in calcination temperature, suggesting that the thermal stability of the catalyst still needed to be improved. Designing and fabricating highly competent and inexpensive electrocatalysts are highly desirable for application in electrocatalytic water splitting. In this study, we synthesized NiFeRu/C nanofibers and Ru, Fe dual-doped Ni 5 P 4 (Ru, Fe-Ni 5 P 4 )/C nanofibers as complementary electrocatalysts for overall water splitting through electrospinning, carbonization, and phosphorization treatment, respectively. The NiFeRu/C nanofibers and Ru, Fe-Ni 5 P 4 /C nanofibers showed high hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction activity, respectively, due to the presence of numerous exposed active sites and optimized adsorption capacity for the reaction intermediates contributed by the synergistic interaction among different metal components in the electrocatalysts. Hence, the assembled asymmetrical electrolytic cell effectively promoted overall water splitting, requiring a voltage of 1.569, 1.744, and 1.872 V to achieve a current density of 100, 500, and 1,000 mA cm −2 , respectively, and it was better than Pt/C||IrO 2 . Additionally, the electrolytic cell could work at 500 mA cm −2 for 100 h without any noticeable deterioration in activity, which indicated that it was durable at high current density. In this study, we described a novel method for designing highly efficient electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Ru particles were introduced into the zeolite ZSM-5 (MFI) by either a conventional impregnation method or a one-step template-free process. The resultant materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, NH 3 and CO 2 temperature-programmed desorption. The results indicated that the Ru species in ZSM-5 catalysts prepared via the latter approach (designated as Ru/ZSM-5-TF) were highly dispersed in the ZSM-5 framework structure and this material exhibited high catalytic performance during the hydrogenation of D-glucose to D-sorbitol. The conversion of D-glucose was as high as 99.6% with D-sorbitol selectivity reaching 99.2%, exceeding the performance of Ru/ZSM-5 catalysts prepared by the conventional impregnation method with microporous or desilicated ZSM-5 supports. More importantly, this catalyst showed high stability against leaching and poisoning and could be reused several times. The extensive dispersion of the Ru species, strong interaction between the Ru species and the ZSM-5, and the suitable surface acidity-basicity balance of the Ru/ZSM-5-TF were all critical factors leading to excellent catalytic behavior and stability.

Bromate is a commonly identified carcinogenic and genotoxic disinfection byproduct in water. In the present work, bimetallic Ru-Cu catalyst supported on carbon nanotube (RuCu/CNT) was prepared and the structural properties of the catalysts were characterized. The results show that the presence of Ru enhances the dispersion and reduction of Cu particles in the RuCu/CNT catalyst in comparison with the monometallic Cu catalyst supported on CNT (Cu/CNT). For electrocatalytic reaction on Cu/CNT, bromate is reduced on metallic Cu surface via a redox process. For Ru/CNT, highly active H* radicals are generated on metallic Ru surface via the Volmer process and are used for bromate reduction. As for the RuCu/CNT, bromate is reduced through two main pathways, including direct redox reaction on metallic Cu and indirect reduction by active H* radicals on Ru surface. Accordingly, RuCu/CNT exhibits the highest catalytic activity , ascribed to the synergistic effect between metallic Ru and Cu. Furthermore, the bimetallic catalyst displays much higher catalytic efficiency as compared with previously reported results. The pH, initial bromate concentration, in-situ electrochemical reduction of the electrodes and working potential have strong impacts on the removal efficiency of bromate on RuCu/CNT.

How to skillfully enhance the OH - binding energy of the hydrophilic site to accelerate water decomposition and avoid OH - poisoning is a huge challenge for achieving efficient alkaline HER kinetics. Therefore, the Ru-Fe 2 P/Re 3 P 4 model was designed from the perspective of coordinating the binding energy and spillover path of OH - . Density functional theory (DFT) disclosed that Re and Ru atoms act as hydrophilic sites and hydrogen evolution sites, respectively, to synergistically promote alkaline HER. In addition, the Ru dopant reduced the water dissociation energy barrier by enhancing the OH - binding energy of the Re hydrophilic sites. Meanwhile, Fe atoms with stronger OH - binding energy exhibited the OH - detoxification effect by promoting the OH - dynamic spillover from the Re sites. Given these, a unique Ru-ReFeP/IF-Q electrode was prepared by the ‘vapor phase phosphorization-quenching Ru doping’ strategy. As anticipated, the Ru-ReFeP/IF-Q electrode, driven by the Re-Ru-Fe alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) mechanism, only requires an overpotential of 172 mV at the industrial-level current density of 1 A cm −2 . The reinforced signal peaks attributed to Ru-H and Fe-OH species in the in-situ Raman spectra confirmed the detoxifying effect of Fe sites in avoiding OH - poisoning at hydrophilic active sites. In summary, this work provides a novel design idea for accelerating alkaline HER kinetics from the perspective of synergistically optimizing the binding energy and spillover path of OH - byproducts.

A high surface area (HSA) Ce 0.75 Zr 0.25 O 2 (CZ) support was synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis method with assistance of surfactant (cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide , CTAB), and then 2.0 wt% Ru was impregnated on it to obtain a steam reforming catalyst for n-dodecane. The surface area of Ru/HSA-CZ catalyst is 107.6 m 2 g −1 , which is ca. three times higher than that prepared through the sol-gel (sg) method (34.3 m 2 g −1 , Ru/CZ-sg) and ca. 40% higher than that without CTAB (76.7 m 2 g −1 , Ru/CZ-wo). Catalytic steam reforming of n-dodecane, shows the completely conversion of n-dodecane over Ru/HSA-CZ and slightly drops about 6% (650 °C, LHSV = 12 mL/g h, S/C = 4, time on stream = 7 h) while 81% and 70% were observed for the Ru/CZ-wo and Ru/CZ-sg but with twice (or triple) deactivation rates. The possible reason for observed better performance of Ru/HSA-CZ should be attributed to the high metal dispersion of Ru over HSA-CZ, and the favorable Ru-support interaction as evidenced by H 2 -Temperature programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR), and high redox ability of high surface area Ce 0.75 Zr 0.25 O 2 support thanks to high Ce 3+ content. Further steam reforming of n-dodecane over Ru/HSA-CZ at higher LHSV (750 °C, LHSV = 36 mL/g h, S/C = 4) exhibits completed conversion and without significant deactivation.

This research is centered on the design and synthesis of a highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst, 1%Ru-MgO- 400 °C, for the hydrogenation of pyrrole to pyrrolidine. As a key intermediate in pharmaceutical manufacturing and fine chemical production, pyrrolidine synthesis poses significant challenges in terms of efficiency. In this work, MgO was synthesized via the calcination of Mg(OH) 2 , followed by the deposition of Ru onto MgO- 400 °C through a sodium borohydride reduction approach to produce the 1%Ru-MgO- 400 °C catalyst. The catalyst demonstrated exceptional performance under conditions of 170 °C and 3.5 MPa H 2 pressure, achieving complete conversion of pyrrole and a 100% yield of pyrrolidine. Advanced characterization methods such as XRD, TG, BET, SEM and HR-TEM were used to analyze the catalyst, revealing that the ruthenium nanoparticles were uniformly loaded on the MgO carrier to form a highly dispersed active site, while the crystal structure of MgO remained intact with excellent thermal stability, providing a structural basis for the efficient performance of the catalyst. Additionally, the catalyst exhibited remarkable stability and retained high activity over multiple reaction cycles, highlighting its suitability for industrial-scale applications. The findings of this study contribute novel perspectives to the development of robust and efficient hydrogenation catalysts and present a sustainable approach for the environmentally friendly synthesis of pyrrolidine. Supported Ru catalysts over TiO 2 with various crystal phases were prepared, which involved rutile, anatase, and their mixed phase. And their catalytic activities for CH 3 Br complete oxidation were investigated. Results showed Ru/TiO 2-700-4 that TiO 2-700-4 is sourced from anatase TiO 2 calcined at 700 °C for 4 h is the most active catalyst among these catalysts. The content of rutile phase on the surface is lower than the bulk. Strong metal support interaction occurs owing to lower lattice mismatch between RuO 2 and rutile TiO 2 . It was further verified by H 2 -temperature programmed reduction, ultraviolet-Raman and transmission electron microscopy . Especially mixed-phase TiO 2 is more conductive to higher dispersion of RuO 2 than pure phase TiO 2 , which is easier to form epitaxial growth . The catalytic activity for CH 3 Br complete oxidation was not in exact accord with the dispersion of Ru. It is possibly attributed to the combination of arguably favorable physico-chemical properties of more Ru active sites, electron transfer , and appropriate surface acidity. At the low reaction temperature, more Ru active sites are beneficial for the total oxidation of CH 3 Br. With the increase of temperature, higher activity is prone to strong surface acidity and electron transfer, as was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectra and NH 3 -temperature programmed desorption analysis.

In this study, the bimetallic RuM-CeO 2 (M = Ni, Fe, Cu, K and Cs) catalysts were facilely fabricated by taking the commercially available CeO 2 (99.95 % metals basis, Aladdin, < 50 nm of diameter) as the support. They displayed distinct catalytic performance, especially the chemo-selectivity, on the methoxycarbonylation of styrene with CO and CH 3 OH. Impressively, Ru 2 Ni 0.6 -CeO 2 provided an up to 90.1 % yield of methyl phenylpropionate with satisfied linear selectivity (L/B = 91/9). The characterization and mechanistic results demonstrated that the doping of proper amount of Ni species enriches the local oxygen vacancy (Vö) at the surface but slightly reduces the charge at Ru sites, thereby modulating the interfacial Lewis acid − base pair (Ru-O-Ce-Vö) for catalysis. It thus enhances the CH 3 OH dissociation, leading to high coverage of OCH 3 species with low adsorption energy and relatively weak acidity. Further, the insertion of CO becomes readily due to the weak Ru-CO affinity at electron-deficient Ru center therein. As such, the apparent activation energies ( E a ) of styrene methoxycarbonylation over Ru 2 -CeO 2 (71.2 kJ mol −1 ) is nearly half-reduced by doping Ni element (Ru 2 Ni 0.6 -CeO 2 : 37.5 kJ mol −1 ). Meanwhile, the competitive side reactions at the surface of Ru 2 Ni 0.6 -CeO 2 is inhibited without sufficient acid strength and acid sites. Both aromatic olefins and cyclic olefins were well tolerated under such a system.

In this study, magnetic Fe 3 O 4 modified Ru/Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) catalysts were used to achieve the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FFA), with alcohols as the solvent and hydrogen donors . According to the result of the catalyst characterization, Fe 3 O 4 promoted the formation of Ru 0 species. The effects of Fe 3 O 4 loading and different hydrogen donors on the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of FF were tested, and the reaction parameters and catalyst stability were also analyzed. It is found that Fe 3 O 4 effectively enhanced the activity of Ru/CNTs in catalytic transfer hydrogenation of FF, the catalytic activity was optimized at the Fe 3 O 4 loading of 5 wt%, and the optimal hydrogen donor was i -propanol. Moreover, the Ru–Fe 3 O 4 /CNTs could be easily collected for further use and possessed excellent stability. The mechanism of the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of FF using Ru–Fe 3 O 4 /CNTs was discussed, and the corresponding catalyst activity groups included metal Ru sites and RuO x -Fe 3 O 4 Lewis acid sites, which account for the excellent catalytic activity of transfer hydrogenation.
