Phenylformamidinium-enabled quasi-2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite solar cells with improved stability

Xingcheng Li,Wanpei Hu,Yanbo Shang,Xin Yu,Xue Wang,Weiran Zhou,Mingtai Wang,Qun Luo,Chang-Qi Ma,Yalin Lu,Shangfeng Yang

Two-dimensional (2D)/quasi-2D perovskite solar cells (PSCs) incorporating organic spacer cations exhibit appealing ambient stability in comparison with their 3D analogs. Most reported organic spacer cations are based on ammonium, whereas formamidinium (FA + ) has been seldom applied despite that FA has been extensively used in high-efficiency 3D PSCs. Herein, a novel FA-based organic spacer cation, 4-chloro-phenylformamidinium (CPFA + ), is applied in quasi-2D Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) PSCs for the first time, and methylammonium chloride (MACl) is employed to promote crystal growth and orientation of perovskite film, resulting in high power conversion efficiency (PCE) with improved stability. Upon incorporating CPFA + organic spacer cation and MACl additive, high-quality quasi-2D CPFA 2 MA n −1 Pb n (I 0.857 Cl 0.143 ) 3 n +1 ( n  = 9) perovskite film forms, exhibiting improved crystal orientation, reduced trap state density, prolonged carrier lifetime and optimized energy level alignment. Consequently, the CPFA 2 MA n −1 Pb n (I 0.857 Cl 0.143 ) 3 n +1 ( n  = 9) quasi-2D RP PSC devices deliver a highest PCE of 14.78%. Moreover, the un-encapsulated CPFA-based quasi-2D RP PSC devices maintain ∼ 80% of its original PCE after exceeding 2000 h storage under ambient condition, whereas the 3D MAPbI 3 counterparts retain only ∼ 45% of its original PCE. Thus, the ambient stability of quasi-2D RP PSC devices is improved obviously relative to its 3D MAPbI 3 counterpart.

Efficient Self-Trapped Exciton Emission in Ruddlesden–Popper Sb-Doped Cs3Cd2Cl7 Perovskites

Yarui Dai,Qilin Wei,Tong Chang,Jialong Zhao,Sheng Cao,Bingsuo Zou,Ruosheng Zeng

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have attracted extensive attention due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. Among them, layered two-dimensional (2D) metal halide materials with special structures have attracted extensive attention due to their superior stability and optoelectronic properties. Here, we report the 2D Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) phase Cs3Cd2Cl7 synthesized by a solvothermal method, and the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of the pristine Cs3Cd2Cl7 sample (PLQY ∼ 10%) can be increased to 68 ± 5% through appropriate Sb3+ doping. This should be the highest PLQY of all reported all-inorganic RP-phase Cd-based perovskites so far. Our results indicate that the highly efficient cyan emission can be attributed to the common self-trapped exciton (STE) emission of the triplet states of Cd2+ and Sb3+ induced by strong electron–phonon coupling, and Sb3+:Cs3Cd2Cl7 has excellent structural and spectral stability. This new material should be a promising candidate for optoelectronic applications in the future.

Compositionally Designed 2D Ruddlesden–Popper Perovskites for Efficient and Stable Solar Cells

Yi Wei,Baoquan Chen,Fan Zhang,Yuyang Tian,Xichuan Yang,Bin Cai,Jijun Zhao

Perovskite solar cells have emerged as one of the most promising candidates for next-generation solar cells. However, their instability remains challenging for practical applications. Here, the authors aim to enhance the stability and efficiency simultaneously by tuning the organic components in 2D Ruddlesden−Popper perovskites (2D-RPPs). Four groups of 2D-RPPs are prepared and the influence of 4-fluorophenethylammonium (FPEA) and formamidinium (FA) cations on the film properties and device performance are investigated. The (FPEA) 2 (FA) 8 Pb 9 I 28 film is found to be exceptionally vertically orientated, showing enhanced charge transport and lower defect density. Its absorption edge substantially extends in the IR region, which greatly increases the photocurrent. A high efficiency of 16.15% along with a V oc of 1.07 V and a J sc of 20.88 mA cm −2 is achieved for the (FPEA) 2 (FA) 8 Pb 9 I 28 solar cell. Notably, the (FPEA) 2 (FA) 8 Pb 9 I 28 film exhibits good humidity stability and remarkably enhanced thermal stability. Its unencapsulated device maintains 95% of its starting efficiency after 2112 h when exposed to ambient air with 30–70% relative humidity, which is superior than those of the reported (PEA) 2 (MA) 8 Pb 9 I 28 and (FPEA) 2 (MA) 8 Pb 9 I 28 solar cells. The study demonstrates that enhanced performance of 2D-RPPs can be obtained by strategically designing organic compositions, which paves an avenue toward the commercialization of 2D-RPP devices.

Efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production over La/Rh co-doped Ruddlesden-Popper compound Sr2TiO4

Xiaoqin Sun,Xiaoxiang Xu

Layered semiconductor compounds often exhibit intriguing properties for photocatalytic water splitting, probably correlated with their peculiar crystal structures that facilitate charge separations. In this work, we perform an investigation on the layered Ruddlesden-Popper compound Sr 2 TiO 4 and its La/Rh co-doped counterparts for photocatalytic hydrogen production from water. Their crystal structures, optical absorption and other physicochemical properties have been systematically explored. Our results suggest that La/Rh can be successfully incorporated into Sr 2 TiO 4 with layered crystal structure maintained. The use of polymerized-complex method for sample synthesis significantly reduces the calcination temperature as low as 900   °C. La/Rh serves as efficient dopants for extending the light absorbance of Sr 2 TiO 4 as far as 550   nm. Photocatalytic hydrogen productions are also considerably improved after La/Rh co-doping under both full range (λ   ≥   250   nm) and visible light irradiation (λ   ≥   420   nm). An optimal doping level is reached at 3% (Sr 1.97 La 0.03 Ti 0.97 Rh 0.03 O 4 ) which gives the highest average hydrogen production rate ∼100   μmol/h and ∼40   μmol/h under full range (λ   ≥   250   nm) and visible light irradiation (λ   ≥   420   nm), corresponding to apparent quantum efficiency ∼1.27% and ∼1.18%, respectively. Photoelectrochemical analysis reveals that charge separation and electron lifetime strongly depends on the level of La/Rh co-doping. Mott-Schottky analysis and theoretical calculations indicate that the improved light absorption of La/Rh co-doped Sr 2 TiO 4 stems from the formation of new valence band with Rh 4d character which uplifts the valence band edge of Sr 2 TiO 4 .

Exsolution-driven surface engineering of Ruddlesden–Popper oxides for protonic ceramic air electrodes

Zohaib Ur Rehman,Aleeza Javeed,Bingbing Qiu,Kang Zhu,Hassan Akhtar,Jiwen Yang,Ranran Peng,Changrong Xia

Exsolution-driven surface reconstruction is an effective strategy for engineering catalytically active interfaces in layered oxides, yet its integration with defect-regulated proton transport in protonic ceramic air electrodes remains insufficiently understood. In this work, PrSr 2 NiCo 1-x Zr x O 7-δ (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10) Ruddlesden–Popper oxides undergo thermally-induced NiO exsolution that drives a structural transformation from the n  = 2 toward the n  = 1 R-P configuration. Introducing Zr 4+ on the B-site moderates exsolution through controlled lattice expansion, which enhances hydration, stabilizes oxygen sublattices, and improves proton transport. The optimized composition (x = 0.05) develops a well-regulated exsolved surface with enhanced oxygen defect equilibria, resulting in a markedly enhanced low-temperature hydration tendency. These features promote proton uptake and strengthen the coupled electronic-protonic pathways that accelerate the proton-coupled oxygen reduction reaction (p-ORR) and superior hydration-assisted transport. Consequently, this composition exhibits a reduced activation barrier under humid air and delivers a peak power density of 0.995 W cm −2 in fuel cell mode and a remarkable current density of −2.22 A cm −2 in electrolysis mode at 650 °C, while maintaining stable operation for over 200 h at 600 °C. In contrast, higher Zr content leads to SrZrO 3 formation and reduced performance, while the undoped phase suffers uncontrolled NiO exsolution and elevated TEC. This study demonstrates a practical approach to tailoring Ruddlesden–Popper oxides with synergistic electronic, ionic, and protonic transport for high-performance protonic ceramic air electrodes.

Intrinsic Electrocatalytic Activity Regulation of R-P Perovskite La1.2Sr0.8Ni0.6Fe0.4O4+δ by Low-Temperature Fluorination

Xiaocao Cao,Yaowei Hao,Jiafan Zheng,Haodong Wang,Zhiguang Lin,Yafang Zhao,Jiayi Liu,Ming Zhang,Zhongrong Shen

Ruddlesden–Popper (R-P) perovskite oxides have attracted much attention as highly active and stable bifunctional materials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER)/oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline solutions due to the nonuse of precious metal elements. Herein, a triple (H+, O2–, and electron) conductive R-P perovskite oxide, La1.2Sr0.8Ni0.6Fe0.4O4+δ, was prepared, and the valence state of transition metal cations and highly oxidized oxygen (O–/O22–) in the structure was tuned by a low-temperature fluorine substitution treatment. The homogeneous distribution of the fluorine elements across the particles of the R-P perovskite oxide after its fluorination was confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images. By regulation of the amount of highly oxidative state oxygen species and the valence state of transition metal cations in the R-P perovskite structure, the material exhibits a significant enhancement for both the OER and ORR electrocatalytic activities. The fluoridated La1.2Sr0.8Ni0.6Fe0.4O4+δFy (LSNF-OF) achieves a low OER overpotential of 308.1 mV in a 1 M KOH electrolyte at a current density of 10 mA cm–2. This is superior to both commercial Co3O4 and the pristine sample without fluorination. The LSNF-OF electrode in an aqueous Zn-air battery (ZAB) exhibits a peak power density of 19.15 W g–1 at a current density of 24 mA g–1. The low-temperature trace fluorination can enhance the electrocatalytic efficiency of perovskite oxides. This technique can be applied to various types of metal oxides.

Template-confined growth of Ruddlesden–Popper perovskite micro-wire arrays for stable polarized photodetectors

Shun-Xin Li,Guo-Ping Zhang,Hong Xia,Yi-Shi Xu,Chao Lv,Hong-Bo Sun

The detection of the polarization states of light is of great significance for the analysis of biological tissue morphologies, image display systems and sensors. Although organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite crystals have excellent photoelectric properties, which make them very suitable for the preparation of photodetectors, their applications in polarized light detection are hindered by their isotropy and instability. Here, we solved this problem by fabricating a stable 2D layered Ruddlesden–Popper perovskite into anisotropic micro-wire arrays with a template-confined method. Based on this anisotropic structure, a high-performance photodetector with a dark current as low as 10−12 A, high responsivity of 3.5 A W−1, detectivity exceeding 1 × 1015 Jones and a fast response with a rise time of 4.1 ms and a decay time of 3.3 ms was achieved and successfully applied for high-performance polarization detection. More importantly, the device maintained a superior performance even after being exposed to an environment of 60% relative humidity without encapsulation.

Impact of bromide incorporation on strain modulation in 2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite solar cells

Yi Wei,Yanan Sun,Yufeng Liu,Jiawen Song,Jingwei Mao,Chunxiang Li,Jing Liu,Zijian Deng,Lujun Pan,Ze Yu,Xichuan Yang,Jijun Zhao

Two-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites (2D-RPPs) have emerged as promising candidates for efficient solar cells. However, compositional complexity and their multiphase nature make them particularly susceptible to strain, which can have detrimental effects on their device performance and stability. Here, we focus on cyclohexane methylamine (CMA)-based 2D-RPPs and modulate the strain by substituting iodide with bromide. These mixed-halide 2D-RPPs show excellent optical properties, with mixability and tunable band gap. As the substitution ratio increases, the 2D-RPP framework undergoes a sudden rearrangement in crystal lattice, effectively releasing the strain in lattices. Benefiting from the strain relaxation, the 2D-RPPs exhibit evident improvement in crystallinity, which significantly suppresses recombination in the device and enhances carrier transport across it. Consequently, we achieve an increase of 1.15% in efficiency with the strain-released devices containing (CMA) 2 MA 8 Pb 9 I 26.4 Br 1.6 . This device shows significantly improved stability, retaining 93% of the initial efficiency after exposure to 55%–85% relative humidity (RH) for 120 days.

Phase Structure, Bond Features, and Microwave Dielectric Characteristics of Ruddlesden–Popper Type Sr2TiO4 Ceramics

Jun Yang,Jinbiao Pang,Xiaofang Luo,Laiyuan Ao,Qiang Xie,Xing Wang,Hongyu Yang,Xianzhong Tang

This work studied the phase constitution, bond characteristics, and microwave dielectric performances of Sr2TiO4ceramics. Based on XRD and Rietveld refinement analysis, pure tetragonal Ruddlesden–Popper type Sr2TiO4ceramic is synthesized at 1425~1525 °C. Meanwhile, the microstructure is dense and without porosity, indicating its high sinterability and densification. Great microwave dielectric performances can be obtained, namely anεrvalue of 39.41, and aQ × fvalue of 93,120 GHz, when sintered at 1475 °C. Under ideal sintering conditions, the extrinsic factors are minimized and can be ignored. Thus, the intrinsic factors are considered crucial in determining microwave dielectric performances. Based on the P–V–L complex chemical bond theory calculation, the largest bond ionicity, and proportions to the bond susceptibility from Sr–O bonds suggest that Sr–O bonds mainly determine the dielectric polarizability. However, the Ti–O bonds show lattice energy about three times larger than Sr–O bonds, emphasizing that the structural stability of Sr2TiO4ceramics is dominated by Ti–O bonds, and the Ti–O bonds are vital in determining the intrinsic dielectric loss. The thermal expansion coefficient value of the Sr2TiO4structure is also mainly decided by Ti–O bonds.Keywords:Sr2TiO4;microwave dielectric properties;P–V–L complex chemical bond theory

Atomic Permutation toward New Ruddlesden–Popper Two-Dimensional Perovskite with the Smallest Interlayer Spacing

Zhuangzhuang Zhang,Shining Geng,Jiaoxia Zhang,Zilong Zhang,Qiu Xiong,Lusheng Liang,Ruixiang Mi,Zewen Xiao,Rosario Scopelliti,Peng Gao

We present a homologous series (CH3(NH2)2)2PbX4 (X = Cl, Br, I) of the Ruddlesden–Popper two-dimensional (2D) perovskite series. The new A-site cation (methyl hydrazinium, MHy) stemming from an atomic permutation of formamidine shows unique hydrogen-bond-stabilized 2D structures contrasting ethyl amine (CH3CH2NH3) and formamidine (NHCHNH2) as revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The subtle manipulation of the tolerance factor leads to (CH3(NH2)2)2PbX4 with the smallest interlayer spacing among the reported R–P 2D perovskites. A combined density functional theory calculation and experimental study assist in interpreting these disparate (electronic) structures/properties brought by similar cations. First-principles calculations also confirm the direct bandgap nature of (CH3(NH2)2)2PbI4 with wide valence and conduction bandwidths. After studying different colloidal behavior in the common polar solvents, we continued with the characterization based on the thin film samples. The homologous series (CH3(NH2)2)(CH3NH3)nPbnI3n+1 (n = 1, 2, 3, 4) multidimensional (MD) perovskite films show a characteristic decrease of the bandgap as n increases. The potential of these MD perovskites toward planar junction solar cell applications was assessed, and an initial power conversion efficiency of 5.83% was obtained from the (CH3(NH2)2)2(CH3NH3)3Pb4I13 perovskite, with reasonable stability after aging for 1200 h. This new cation provides new chances for many more homologous 2D halide perovskites for solid-state photovoltaics and other applications.

B-Site engineered bilayered Ruddlesden-Popper ferrites for efficient oxygen evolution and overall water electrolysis

Zhi Zhang,Zhenyu Lei,Zhenkang Sun,Mengfei Zhang,Yu Zhang,Qi Yang,Xinru Ma,Shengnan Chen,Jia Li,Minkai Qin,Yunyi Cao,Jianguo Liu

Developing durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is pivotal for hydrogen production but hindered by sluggish kinetics. While Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) oxides offer a versatile platform, they often suffer from limited active site density. Herein, we present a targeted B-site engineering strategy to activate bilayer RP ferrites (La 0.25 Sr 2.75 Fe 2 O 7 ) via systematic Ni incorporation. This substitution strengthens B-O covalency and enriches oxygen vacancies. The optimized LSFN50 exhibits a low overpotential of 344 mV at 10 mA cm -2 , surpassing commercial IrO 2 . Mechanistic studies indicate a pH-dependent pathway. Systematic structural and chemical analyses reveal that high-valence Ni 3+ and Fe-Ni synergy drive surface reconstruction into active oxyhydroxides, with lattice oxygen participation further boosting reaction kinetics. Significantly, an anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolyzer employing the LSFN50 anode delivers an industrial-grade current density of 2.23 A cm -2 at 1.9 V. This study highlights the critical role of B-site modulation in designing high-performance catalysts for practical energy conversion.

Ruddlesden-Popper compound Sr2TiO4 co-doped with La and Fe for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production

Hong Zhang,Shuang Ni,Yongli Mi,Xiaoxiang Xu

Doping techniques generally serve as effective means for tailoring the physicochemical properties of a target compound. In this work, we successfully co-doped La/Fe into Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) compound Sr 2 TiO 4 and performed a detailed investigation on the crystal structure, morphology, optical absorption and photocatalytic hydrogen production reactions after doping. Our findings suggest that La/Fe co-doping slightly expand the unit cell of Sr 2 TiO 4 while maintains the structure lamination. Incorporating La/Fe into Sr 2 TiO 4 efficiently reduces the band gap and the level of band gap reduction can be controlled by varying the amounts of dopants. La/Fe co-doping significantly improves the photocatalytic properties of Sr 2 TiO 4 under both full range (λ ≥ 250 nm) and visible light illumination (λ ≥ 420 nm). A fivefold enhancement in hydrogen production rate (∼106.2 μmol/h) is seen in sample Sr 1.9 La 0.1 Ti 0.9 Fe 0.1 O 4 (x = 0.1). Efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production under visible light illumination (λ ≥ 420 nm) is also achieved in sample Sr 1.7 La 0.3 Ti 0.7 Fe 0.3 O 4 (x = 0.3) with AQE as high as ∼1.18% at 420 nm. DFT calculations confirm the critical role of Fe in reducing the band gap of Sr 2 TiO 4 by forming additional spin-polarized bands (SPB). The anisotropic charge transportation in Sr 2 TiO 4 is also verified by our calculations as both conduction band minimum (CBM) and valence band maximum (VBM) are buried in TiO 6 octahedron layers. The 2D charge transportation properties are particularly useful for photocatalytic reactions since interlayer charge recombination is essentially prevented.
