Dual self-repairing enhancement mechanisms of blocked dynamic isocyanate prepolymer on aging degradation and fatigue damages of high-content SBS-modified asphalt

Guoqiang Sun,Ting Ma,Yuanyuan Jiang,Mingjun Hu,Tong Lu,Dulcie Hani’irara Siwainao

High-content SBS-modified asphalt (HCSMA) was the primary binder material used in high-quality pavements. The aging degradation and fatigue damages of SBS cross-linked networks were the direct triggers of HCSMA properties deterioration. However, current main asphalt self-repairing enhancement technologies were unable to repair the damaged SBS structures, making it difficult to fully restore the properties of HCSMA. This study aimed to develop dual self-repairing techniques for actively repairing the SBS damages in HCSMA. To achieve this, the thermally initiated blocked dynamic isocyanate prepolymer (BDIP) was prepared as a modifier for HCSMA by introducing blocking agents and dynamic bonds into the isocyanate prepolymers. It showed that BDIP can react with asphalt components containing polar functional groups to improve the basic physical properties of HCSMA. Firstly, for the aging degradation of SBS networks, the isocyanate groups released from BDIP through deblocking reactions reacted with the active end groups in SBS degradation products to repair the aging degraded SBS, thereby constructing dynamic SBS cross-linked networks with dynamic covalent bonds. Analysis of molecular composition and fluorescence microscopy observation showed that BDIP repaired 64 % of the degraded networks in HCSMA during mild aging, resulting in the SBS networks being nearly intact. The biphasic reactions (asphalt and SBS phases) between BDIP and HCSMA enabled HCSMA/BDIP (HCSMA modified with BDIP) to exhibit excellent high-temperature deformation resistance both before and after aging. Secondly, for the fatigue damage of SBS networks, the reversible cleavage exchange reaction characteristic of dynamic bonds was used to repair the SBS fatigue damages under load. Linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test revealed that the reversible dynamic disulfide bonds in the SBS networks provided satisfactory fatigue life and excellent fatigue property stability with aging for HCSMA/BDIP. Additionally, the LAS-based healing test confirmed that the dynamic SBS cross-linked networks improved the fatigue repairing properties of aged HCSMA/BDIP, while maintaining excellent fatigue repairing property stability under aging conditions. Overall, the dual self-repairing enhancement mechanisms of BDIP were confirmed, HCSMA/BDIP demonstrated significant advantages over HCSMA without BDIP, most notably exhibiting at least a 50 % increase in shear viscosity and fatigue life.

Preparation of reactive chain extension rejuvenators and its application in the aged SBS modified bitumen sustainable recycling

Xiaobin Han,Jianying Yu,Xiaoqiao Huang,Zhilong Cao,Ruiyang Wang,Peng He

In order to better restore the properties of aged SBS modified bitumen (ASMB) and promote its sustainable recycling, in this paper, the reactive chain extension rejuvenators (RCERs) were prepared from polyethylene glycol (PEG-400/PEG-1000) and diisocyanate (2,4-toluylene diisocyanate (TDI)/hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI)) and the effect of RCERs on the rejuvenation of aged SBS was studied. Different rejuvenation systems composed by TDI, HDI, RCERs and aromatic hydrocarbon oil (AHO) were constructed, and the influence of rejuvenation systems ((TDI + AHO), (HDI + AHO) and (RCERs + AHO)) on the physical properties of ASMB were investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectra demonstrated that the RCERs were successfully synthesized. Gel permeation chromatography indicated that the number average molecular weight range of RCERs was 550–1150 and the molecular weight of SBS rejuvenated by RCERs was larger than that of SBS rejuvenated by TDI and HDI. Thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis manifested that the thermal stability of SBS rejuvenated by RCERs were enhanced evidently compared with that of TDI and HDI. The physical properties of ASMB could be fully recovered by the rejuvenation systems, and the ‘RCERs +AHO’ had better rejuvenation effect on ASMB than that of ‘TDI + AHO’ and ‘HDI + AHO’.

Effect of reactive rejuvenating system on physical properties and rheological characteristics of aged SBS modified bitumen

Xiong Xu,Jianying Yu,Lihui Xue,Bianyang He,Wei Du,Huang Zhang,Ying Li

The excellent comprehensive performance of SBS modified bitumen (SMB), during a long-term thermo- and photo-oxidative exposure, will fail to satisfy the pavement requirement. In this paper, the synergistic effect of 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BUDGE) on the molecular weight of aged SBS was firstly studied, through a simulation, to confirm whether a new polymer structure can be obtained. Then, the reactive rejuvenating system containing MDI, BUDGE and bituminous composition returning agent (MDI-BUDGEs) was applied in the rejuvenation of aged SMB. The results show that the rebuilt molecular structure of aged SBS can be obtained with the combination of MDI and BUDGE. Meanwhile, MDI-BUDGEs can improve the low-temperature ductility and inhibit the sharp fall of the softening point of aged SMB, while decrease the viscosity-temperature response at 120–165 °C. Also, MDI-BUDGEs can contribute for increasing the viscous component, improving the fatigue resistance and remaining the high-temperature performance grade of aged SMB, and moreover, decrease the limited elastic modulus and the elastic-plasticity transition rate to avoid the occurrence of the brittle failure within a small strain range.

Influence of novel long-chain active composite rejuvenators on interfacial adhesion between aged SBS modified asphalt and aggregate

Xiaobin Han,Sanpeng Mao,Shangheng Zeng,Zhilong Cao,Peng He,Wei Du,Jianying Yu

In this study, the novel long-chain active composite rejuvenators (NLCACRs) were composed of long-chain active rejuvenators (LCARs) and aromatic hydrocarbon oil (ArO). Surface free energy method (SFE method), boiling water test method (BWT method) and related parameters were used to evaluate the effect of NLCACRs on interfacial adhesion between aged SBS modified asphalt (ASBS-MA) and granite, and preliminarily predict the moisture sensitivity of asphalt-aggregate system. The results indicated that NLCACRs could increase the surface free energy of ASBS-MA, and the increased range varied with the composition and structure of NLCACRs. The NLCACRs could not only supplement the light components lost by asphalt during aging, but also reconstruct the damaged structure of aged SBS, so they were more effective for the recovery of cohesion work of ASBS-MA. NLCACRs could significantly increase the interfacial adhesion between ASBS-MA and acid granite, and decrease the moisture sensitivity of rejuvenated SBS modified asphalt (RSBS-MA)-granite system. And the results of the BWT method indicated that long-term aging decreased the adhesion grade between SBS modified asphalt and granite from G4 to G2. NLCACRs could restore the adhesion grade of ASBS-MA and granite to the level of original SBS modified asphalt. The comprehensive analysis of the influence of NLCACRs on the interfacial adhesion between ASBS-MA and aggregate showed that the theoretical law (SFE method) was consistent with that of the actual (BWT method). This study could help to explore the influence of NLCACRs on the moisture stability of aged SBS modified asphalt mixture and provide the theoretical basis for its application in practical engineering.
