Improving the mechanical stability and oil stability of slippery liquid infused porous surface (SLIPS) is very urgent to its long-term application in preventing bacteria settlement and mitigating the following microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) for metallic material in marine environment. Herein, a robust superhydrophobic surface was first fabricated through spraying SiO 2 nanoparticles on the natural resin shellac adhesive. The superhydrophobic surface could retain superhydrophobicity after 160 sandpaper abrasion cycles (abrasive length of 64 m), which was attributed to the strong binding force between SiO 2 nanoparticles and shellac via hydrogen bonding . Thus, a robust SLIPS was fabricated through infusing lubricant oil into abrasion-resistant superhydrophobic surface. And the fabricated slippery surface exhibited stable slippery performance after spin treatment and damaged by a scratch. Furthermore, scanning kelvin probe (SKP) test verified the scratch was able to heal through the self-healing performance of lubricant oil. Finally, the bacterial settlement and electrochemical experiment results indicated the SLIPS could effectively mitigate sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) settlement and following MIC after immersing in SRB solution for 14 days. This facile method provides a guidance to fabricate robust slippery surface for its long term application.

Biofouling in marine environments poses a severe threat to artificial facilities such as ship hulls, underwater structures, marine ranches, cross-sea bridges, and offshore wind power piles. Copper-containing antifouling coatings dominate the current market, but the excessive release of copper ions remains an urgent issue. Recently, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) have shown excellent potential in resisting fouling. However, the easy loss of lubricating liquids in complex marine environments limits their long-term stability. Therefore, developing novel antifouling coatings with long-term stability and environmental friendliness is crucial. To tackle these challenges, a SLIPS antifouling coating (Cu/MXene@uPDMS-oil) based on Cu/MXene composite nanofluid and a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix was designed and fabricated. The addition of MXene nanosheets not only promotes the dissolution of copper ions but also enables the controlled release of copper ions through the labyrinth effect, thereby solving the problem of “initial rapid release followed by a slow release” in copper-based coatings. Furthermore, the low surface energy of PDMS, the intrinsic antifouling property of MXene, and the toxic effect of copper ions synergistically enhance the antifouling performance significantly. The inhibition rates against bacteria, Chlorella , and conchs reach 100%, 99.46%, and 100%, respectively. Notably, the introduction of copper particles and MXene into the nanofluids increases the viscosity of the silicone oil system, making it more difficult for silicone oil to be eluted from the coating surface. This endows the Cu/MXene@uPDMS-oil coating with excellent stability and prolongs its antifouling lifespan. In addition, the coating exhibits good hydrophobicity, self-cleaning property, and self-replenishing capability. This research provided a new idea and feasible approach for the development of long-term and environmentally friendly next-generation marine antifouling coatings.

Patterned slippery surfaces based on the technique of slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) have broad technological applications in biofouling, liquid handling, biomolecule collection, and droplet microarrays. However, methods to generate patterned SLIPS with flexibility and practical potential remain a technical roadblock. Here, we report an approach for generating patterned SLIPS, and by utilizing which, as a proof-of-technique application, the droplet microarrays have been presented. Our approach is based on a photocross-linkable polyelectrolyte poly(ethyleneimine)/azide-poly(acrylic acid) (PEI/PAA-N3) film, whose surface structures can be dynamically controlled. We have prepared the surface-patterned PEI/PAA-N3 film containing microstructured and flat regions. We then demonstrate that, because of much higher lubricant retaining capability of the microstructured regions, a patterned SLIPS can be simply generated through infusing the lubricant onto the surface and applying a shear spinning process. This work highlights the importance of the dynamics of surface structures to functional materials, showing broad potential applications.

Marine corrosion has been a global problem with the damage on environment, and economy. With the development, traditional coating technology is difficult to meet the current demands of applications. In this study, TiO 2 nanoparticles were modified and dispersed in silicone oil to form TiO 2 nanofluid. And, the nanofluid was infused into hierarchical structure to produce the SLIPS which is obtained by spraying with the solution of Al 2 O 3 , which significantly reduce the lubricant leaching. As synthesized coating shows the good performance in corrosion resistance. The coating prepared by this novel method show the great potential applications in different marine environments.

Although a large number of bionic superhydrophobic surfaces have been reported in recent years, their poor robustness remains to be improved. Herein, we present a method to fabricate a hierarchical micro-nanostructure on Ti6Al4V with excellent robustness by combining laser direct writing technology and hydrothermal treatment. Microscale pore array pattern with hard oxide layer was generated by laser irradiation, which provided protection for the nanowires later grown in situ by hydrothermal treatment. After low surface energy molecular modification, the composite surface exhibited outstanding wetting properties with a contact angle of 165.2° and a roll-off angle less than 1°. We focused on the mechanical and chemical stability of the as-prepared superhydrophobic surface (SHS), and the performance tests included water jet impact, cyclic friction, solution immersion, heat treatment and UV irradiation. Additionally, the SHS was transformed into slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) by lubricant injection, which expends the applications of the hierarchical micro-nanostructure surface. Considering the loss degree and the self-repairing performance of the lubricants with different viscosities, we can conclude that the lubricant with a viscosity of 350 mPa·s matches the SHS substrate best. The constructed SHS and SLIPS show remarkable robustness and versatility and may be applied in various fields.

The limited durability and difficulty in repairing damaged lubrication layers are significant challenges hindering the practical applications of slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) in fields such as marine antifouling. Here, we present an antifouling SLIPS coating with lubricant self-replenishing properties by grafting silica aerogel onto the layered double hydroxide (LDH) structure. The LDH structure is synthesized on the surface of Mg alloy via a hydrothermal reaction. Following the curing of polymethylsiloxane, silica aerogel is grafted onto the surface, and lubricating oil is infused to obtain the SLIPS coating. The LDH structure provides interconnected microcavities for lubricating oil storage, enabling self-replenishing properties when the lubricating layer is damaged, thereby enhancing the coating's durability. The SLIPS coating exhibits high performance in resisting adhesion of Chlorella vulgaris, Phaeodactylum tricornutum , and Pseudoaltteromonas nigrifaciens , achieving an over 80 % reduction in fouling organism coverage compared to bare Mg. This study presents a promising approach for the application of SLIPS in antifouling.

The icing of transmission conductor seriously threatens the safe operation of power grids. Slippery lubricant-infused porous surface (SLIPS) has shown great potential for anti-icing applications. However, aluminum stranded conductors have complex surfaces, and the current SLIPSs are almost prepared and studied on small flat plates. Herein, the construction of SLIPS on the conductor was realized through anodic oxidation and the anti-icing mechanism of the slippery conductor was studied. Compared to the untreated conductor, the SLIPS-conductor reduces the icing weight by 77% in the glaze icing test and shows very low ice-adhesion strength (7.0 kPa). The excellent anti-icing performance of the slippery conductor is attributed to the droplet impact dynamics, icing delay, and lubricant stability. The dynamic behavior of water droplets is most affected by the complex shape of the conductor surface. Specifically, the impact of the droplet on the conductor surface is asymmetric and the droplet can slide along the depression in low-temperature and high-humidity environments. The stable lubricant of SLIPS increases both the nucleation energy barriers and the heat transfer resistance, which greatly delays the freezing time of droplets. Besides, the nanoporous substrate, the compatibility of the substrate with the lubricant, and the lubricant characteristics contribute to the lubricant stability. This work provides theoretical and experimental guidance on anti-icing strategies for transmission lines.

Slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) is a rising star in corrosion protection owing to its outstanding corrosive medium resistance and self-healing property. The large-area and facile fabrication of SLIPS remains a challenge lying on the way of its practical application. Herein, we develop a novel SLIPS based on a porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate fabricated by thermally induced phase separation. A sphere-packing structure can be easily obtained by blade-coating followed by cooling. The SLIPS exhibits an extremely low sliding angle of 5.8° so that it can resist the fouling of even the Chinese ink, ascribing to its slippery dynamic surface with low surface energy. We also evaluated the anti-corrosion performance of the SLIPS and superhydrophobic PVDF coating by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning Kelvin probe technique (SKP), both of which exhibited enhanced corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution due to the physical oil and air barriers against the corrosive medium penetration. Nevertheless, the SLIPS coatings performed outstanding self-healing properties because of the high fluidity of infused oil to recover the surface damages, and the self-healing process was recorded by the SKP. Graphical The current research presents a novel slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) based on porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) structure fabricated by thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). This SLIPS performs outstanding self-cleaning and has anti-corrosion properties owing to its fluid surface. Most importantly, it can be selfrepaired if damaged, benefiting from the fluidity of the infused liquid.

It is difficult for any marine engineering equipment to avoid the impact of biofouling. Especially, for engineering equipment made of titanium with a high biocompatibility, biofouling is a thorny problem. The outstanding anti-biofouling properties of the slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) and the grafted polydimethylsiloxane (gPDMS) brush surfaces have attracted the attention of researchers. However, the durability and stability of the conventional SLIPSs and the wear resistance of gPDMS are insufficient and should be improved. In this work, PDMS molecule brushes were grafted onto a micro-arc oxidized porous surface infused with a lubricant (silicone oil) to develop a grafted SLIPS (gSLIPS) on a titanium alloy (TA2). The gPDMS molecule brushes have a stronger chemical affinity with silicone oil, which can preserve more lubricants to enhance the durability and stability of the SLIPS. Simultaneously, the infused lubricant in the micro-arc oxidized porous surface can improve the wear resistance of the grafted molecule brushes. Besides, the molecule brushes can further isolate the vulnerable titanium substrate from the biofouling microorganisms. By combining the advantages of the SLIPS and gPDMS, the gSLIPS has excellent stability, durability, and mechanical robustness. The gSLIPS possesses a better biofouling resistance than TA2 and gPDMS. For example, the coverage of Chlorella on the gSLIPS is 0.067% ± 0.022% after being immersed for 14 days, which reduces by 98.8 and 95.6% compared with those on TA2 and gPDMS, respectively. In addition, the gSLIPS also has excellent anti-protein property. Therefore, this method will help develop a more stable, durable, and mechanically robust super-slippery coating with excellent anti-biofouling performance, which has great potential for the extensive titanium applications in marine engineering.

Undesired ice/frost formation and accretion often occur on food freezing facility surfaces, lowering freezing efficiency. In the current study, two slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) were fabricated by spraying hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) and stearic acid (SA)-modified SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) suspensions, separately onto aluminum (Al) substrates coated with epoxy resin to obtain two superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS), and then infusing food-safe silicone and camellia seed oils into the SHS, respectively, achieving anti-frosting/icing performance. In comparison with bare Al, SLIPS not only exhibited excellent frost resistance and defrost properties but also showed ice adhesion strength much lower than that of SHS. In addition, pork and potato were frozen on SLIPS, showing an extremely low adhesion strength of <10 kPa, and after 10 icing/deicing cycles, the final ice adhesion strength of 29.07 kPa was still much lower than that of SHS (112.13 kPa). Therefore, the SLIPS showed great potential for developing into robust anti-icing/frosting materials for the freezing industry.
