Mn-substituted double perovskites , PrBaCo 2-x Mn x O 5+δ (x = 0, 0.5, 1), are evaluated as cathode materials for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. The effects of Mn substitution content on their structural and electrochemical properties including crystal structure, thermal expansion coefficient , and cathodic interfacial polarization resistance are investigated. The PrBaCo 2-x Mn x O 5+δ samples exhibit structural changes with increasing Mn contents from tetragonal (x = 0) to cubic (x = 0.5 and 1.0) symmetry. The thermal expansion coefficient decreases with the increasing Mn content while the cathodic performance increases with the increment of Mn content from x = 0 to x = 0.5 then decreases with the further increment of Mn content from x = 0.5 to x = 1.0. When using La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Ga 0.8 Mg 0.15 Co 0.05 O 3 with 300 μm thickness as electrolyte and Sr 2 Fe 1.4 Ni 0.1 Mo 0.5 O 6-δ as anode, the maximum powder density of the x = 0.5 composite is 0.638 W cm −2 , which is higher than that of the other two samples with x = 0 (0.474 W cm −2 ) and x = 1.0 (0.371 W cm −2 ) at 800 °C.

Metal-supported solid oxide fuel cells (MS-SOFCs) offer superior mechanical strength and fast start-up, but the mismatch between metal and cathode (oxygen electrode) components poses challenges for developing compatible, high-activity cathodes at intermediate-to-low temperatures (IL-T). Recently, cobalt-free cathode materials have attracted significant attention, especially donor-doped SrFeO 3− δ . To further improve their redox performance at IL-T, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed in this study to design Cu-doped SrFe 0.9 Nb 0.1 O 3− δ cathodes, revealing the correlation between Cu-doping and lattice distortion. DFT results indicate that moderate Cu-doping at the B site promotes defect formation and effectively reduces the oxygen vacancy formation energy of the parent SrFe 0.9 Nb 0.1 O 3− δ , while excessive Cu-doping limits the oxygen vacancy formation. Guided by theoretical insights, SrFe 0.9− x Nb 0.1 Cu x O 3− δ (SFNC x , x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20) materials were synthesized, and experimental results further support the DFT conclusions. The optimized SFNC10 composition exhibited the highest oxygen vacancy concentration and achieved a polarization resistance of 0.15 Ω cm 2 at 650 °C. Moreover, this work provides the first demonstration of the SFNC10 cathode applied in an MS-SOFC, with the configuration of FeCr||NiO-GDC||CoGDC||SFNC10, operating stably at 200 mA cm −2 for over 60 h and delivering a peak power density of 728.9 mW cm −2 at 700 °C.

Developing high-performance cathodes for intermediate-temperature SOFCs (IT-SOFCs, 600–800 °C) faces persistent challenges due to sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics and thermal incompatibility issues. In this work, A-site Ba and Pr doping effectively optimizes both the electrochemical performance and stability of Nd 2 NiO 4 -based Ruddlesden-Popper cathodes. Firstly, Nd 1.5 M 0.5 NiO 4 (M = Ba, Pr, Nd) powders were synthesized via a modified Pechini method. Secondly, Rietveld refinement confirmed an orthorhombic structure with Fmmm (No. 69) space group for all compositions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that Pr and Ba ion doping effectively increases oxygen vacancy concentration while simultaneously modulating the valence states of Ni and Pr. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed well-developed porous microstructures favorable for gas diffusion. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements demonstrated remarkably low area-specific polarization resistances of 0.104 and 0.072 Ω cm 2 for NPNO and NBNO, respectively, at 850 °C. Distribution of relaxation times (DRT) analysis further confirmed the enhanced ORR kinetics, showing improved performance across all elementary steps including gas adsorption, dissociation, and charge transfer following A-site optimization. Single-cell tests achieved peak power densities of 0.61 and 0.87 W cm −2 for NPNO and NBNO cathodes at 850 °C, respectively. Notably, the cells exhibited exceptional operational stability, attributable to well-matched thermal expansion coefficients between the cathodes and conventional electrolytes. Finally, these findings establish NBNO as a highly promising cathode material for IT-SOFC applications, offering both superior performance and long-term durability.

Improving the oxygen reduction reduction activity and thermal stability of cathode materials is critical to advancing the commercialization of intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). In this study, a high-performance mixed ionic-electronic conductor (MIEC) BaCo 0.8 Ta 0.2 O 3-δ phase is incorporated into the lattice of NdBaCo 2 O 5+δ (NBC) double perovskite. Such composite construction elevates the oxygen vacancy concentration, lowers the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of NBC-based materials, and simultaneously improves electrocatalytic activity and long-term operational durability of IT-SOFCs. By fitting the distribution of relaxation times, it is concluded that the composite cathode material (NBC&BCT2) significantly accelerates the oxygen dissociation and adsorption kinetics compared with NBC. At 700 °C, the symmetric cell with NBC&BCT2 exhibits an area-specific resistance of only 0.034 Ω cm 2 , approximately 23% of that of NBC. When used as the cathode in IT-SOFCs, the NBC&BCT2-based cells achieve a maximum power density of 1.01 W cm 2 at 700 °C, which is 1.4 times higher than that of NBC. Furthermore, composite modification with BCT alleviates the long-term stability drawbacks originating from the excessively high TEC of Co-based materials. Single cells equipped with NBC&BCT2 maintain stable operation over 100 h under a constant rated voltage, with an output current density 1.5 times higher than that of NBC-based cells. This work establishes a reliable modification strategy to promote the electrocatalytic performance of Co-based perovskites and resolve stability limitations induced by high TEC.

For the first time, biochar derived from a renewable resource, cotton stalk, is used as the feedstock of direct carbon solid oxides fuel cells (DC-SOFCs) for electricity and gas cogeneration. It turns out that the cotton stalk biochar has plenty of naturally grown K and Ca, which are active catalysts for the reverse Boudouard reaction in DC-SOFCs. This natural advantage of the cotton stalk biochar enables an extremely high power density of an anode-supported DC-SOFC at 850 °C, 0.9 W cm −2 , which is the highest among those of the reported DC-SOFCs. Meanwhile, high concentration of CO gas, which is an important feedstock for chemical industry, is obtained from the DC-SOFCs. The energy conversion efficiency of the electricity-gas cogeneration of DC-SOFCs reaches over 70%. A novel method, using compressed char, is proposed and carried out for continuous supply of cotton stalk char to a DC-SOFC. The present work has demonstrated the feasibility and advantages of cogenerating electricity and gas through DC-SOFCs with biochar derived from cotton stalk as the feedstock.

In this study, a novel anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) comprising a Bi2O3-doped NiO-ScSZ anode and an ScSZ electrolyte was successfully fabricated via a low-temperature co-sintering process at 1300 °C. The incorporation of 3 wt% Bi2O3effectively promoted the sintering of both the anode support and electrolyte layer, resulting in a dense, gas-tight electrolyte and a mechanically robust porous anode support. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses confirmed the formation of phase-pure, highly crystalline ScSZ with an optimized microstructure. Electrochemical performance measurements demonstrated that the fabricated cells achieved excellent power density, reaching a peak value of 0.861 W cm−2at 800 °C under humidified hydrogen fuel conditions. The cells maintained stable performance under dry methane operation, with a maximum power density of 0.624 W cm−2at 800 °C, indicating resistance to carbon deposition. Gas chromatographic analyses further revealed that the Bi2O3-doped NiO-ScSZ anode facilitated earlier and more stable electrochemical oxidation of methane-derived species compared with the conventional NiO-YSZ system, even under conditions of an elevated methane partial pressure. These findings demonstrate that Bi2O3co-doping, combined with low-temperature co-sintering, provides an effective approach for fabricating high-performance intermediate-temperature SOFCs with enhanced structural integrity and electrochemical stability. The developed methodology presents a promising pathway toward achieving cost-effective and durable SOFC technologies.

The sluggish kinetics of the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) greatly limits the overall cell performance. In this study, an efficient and durable cathode material for IT-SOFCs is designed based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations by co-doping with Nb and Ta the B-site of the SrFeO 3− δ perovskite oxide. The DFT calculations suggest that Nb/Ta co-doping can regulate the energy band of the parent SrFeO 3− δ and help electron transfer. In symmetrical cells, such cathode with a SrFe 0.8 Nb 0.1 Ta 0.1 O 3− δ (SFNT) detailed formula achieves a low cathode polarization resistance of 0.147 Ω cm 2 at 650 °C. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirm that the co-doping of Nb/Ta in SrFeO 3− δ B-site increases the balanced concentration of oxygen vacancies, enhancing the electrochemical performance when compared to 20 mol% Nb single-doped perovskite oxide. The cathode button cell with Ni-SDC|SDC|SFNT configuration achieves an outstanding peak power density of 1.3 W cm −2 at 650 °C. Moreover, the button cell shows durability for 110 h under 0.65 V at 600 °C using wet H 2 as fuel.

Propane-fueled solid oxide fuel cells (C 3 H 8 -SOFCs) are a promising approach for the cogeneration of light olefins (LOs) and electricity. Nickel (Ni)-based anode supports have demonstrated exceptional performance in SOFCs. However, a significant challenge arises from the propensity of C 3 H 8 to form carbon deposits. To address this, we constructed a catalytic layer composed of Ni- and Pt-doped Zn 2 TiO 4 (ZNTP) on a Ni-YSZ (yttrium-stabilized zirconia) anode. This layer catalyzes C 3 H 8 dehydrogenation to LOs and prevents direct contact between C 3 H 8 and the anode and solid electrolyte. Specifically, ZnNi alloy NPs and highly dispersed Pt atoms are formed within the catalytic layer. The ZnNi alloy enhances the electrical conductivity and oxygen vacancy concentration of the catalyst, while Pt atoms improve C 3 H 8 adsorption, providing more active sites for oxidative propane dehydrogenation to LOs. With wet 10 %C 3 H 8 -Ar (3 %H 2 O) as the anode feed, the cell delivers a LOs yield of 28.6 % at 750 °C and a peak power density of 680 mW/cm 2 , both among the highest reported for this feedstock composition. Moreover, the SOFC demonstrates remarkable resistance to carbon deposition. The work constructs an efficient dual-functional catalyst for propane dehydrogenation to LOs and offers a significant strategy for the cogeneration of valuable chemicals and electricity.

The commercialization of Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) has always been limited by the poor catalytic activity and the severe degradation of cathode in the intermediate and low operating temperature. Here we report a Gd 0.8 Ce 0.2 O 1.9−δ (GDC) coated La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (LSCF) composite cathode material , which can significantly improve the electrochemical performance and durability of LSCF cathode. The effects of different GDC coating thickness on the electrochemical performance and long-term working stability of LSCF cathode are investigated, and the optimal coating thickness is established. The polarization impedance of GDC coated LSCF (LSCF@GDC) cathode with 9 nm of GDC coating is 0.08 Ω cm 2 at 800 °C, which is only one quarter of that of the raw LSCF cathode, and the degradation rate of constant current polarization with 100 mA cm −2 is only 0.42%/100 h at 700 °C, which is far less than that of the raw LSCF cathode. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results show that the degree of Sr segregation decreases with the increase of the thickness of the coated GDC layer. The potential LSCF@GDC composite material is expected to increase the operability of SOFCs and accelerate its commercialization.

Cathode materials play a crucial role in enabling the widespread adoption of intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFC) for commercial applications. This study utilized the sol-gel method to prepare a range of perovskite oxides, specifically Sc-doped La 2 Ni 1-x Sc x O 4+δ (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, and 0.15), without the use of cobalt. The investigation focused on making a study of how the introduction of Sc doping affected the thermal stability, electrochemical properties , and structure of cathode materials. XRD , FE-SEM, and electrochemical workstations were subjected to structural characterization and performance testing of materials . The findings indicate that all the prepared materials have a typical Ruddlesden-Popper structure, and an abundance of additional oxygen can be generated in close proximity to the interstitial by incorporating Sc into the cathode of La 2 Ni 1-x Sc x O 4+δ to increase the oxygen vacancy and improve the catalytic activity of ORR . La 2 Ni 0.9 Sc 0.1 O 4+δ has the highest oxygen surface exchange kinetics, the dissociative adsorption of oxygen is the rate-limiting step at the cathode. At a temperature of 700 °C, the lowest polarization resistance of La 2 Ni 0.9 Sc 0.1 O 4+δ is 0.1298 Ω cm 2 , while the single cell with La 2 Ni 0.9 Sc 0.1 O 4+δ as the cathode achieves an impressive peak power density of 0.462 W cm −2 , thus demonstrating exceptional long-term stability. La 2 Ni 0.9 Sc 0.1 O 4+δ is expected to be a potential high-performance IT-SOFC cathode material.

To achieve the commercial application of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), the performance degradation of the cell caused by carbon deposition needs to be well addressed. Here we report a new anode with nanostructured heterogeneous interfaces by integrating 0.38 wt% Sn and 0.19 wt% MgO into Ni SDC for hydrocarbon-fueled SOFCs. The cell with 0.38Sn–0.19MgO Ni SDC anode exhibits a peak power density of 374 mW cm −2 and excellent long-term stability for 100 h with a power attenuation about 13.5% in humidified methane at 700 °C, which is attributed to the decreased rate of carbon deposition by promoting the formation of C O bonds instead of C C bonds, increasing the activation barrier for methane cracking and preventing the formation of nickel carbides by the confinement effect of heterogeneous catalysts, and the enhanced rate of carbon removal is attributed to excellent hydrophilicity and adsorption of CO 2 , as revealed by combined density function theory (DFT) calculations and experimental characterizations. This finding offers potential for the application of hydrocarbon-fueled SOFCs and provides a guide for designing coking-tolerant anodes.

Porous structures are widely utilized in the functional layers of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), in which thermal conductivity plays a critical role in thermal management and structural stability. In this work, samarium-doped ceria (Ce 0.8 Sm 0.2 O 1.9 , SDC) was selected as the matrix material, with carbon powder as a pore former, to systematically investigate the evolution of thermal conductivity under varying porosity and temperature conditions. Microstructural characterization revealed a distinct sintering-induced sandwich-like stratification at low pore-former contents, which significantly influenced the heat transport behavior. To capture this unique microstructural feature, a theoretical heat conduction model was developed. This proposed model comprehensively accounts for porosity, structural non-uniformity, and temperature, enabling the quantitative prediction of the effective thermal conductivity of porous SDC functional layers. The model predictions exhibit excellent agreement with experimental results, with a mean relative error (MRE) of 4.16% and a determination coefficient (R²) greater than 0.98. This study establishes a reliable and physically grounded approach for predicting the thermal conductivity of porous functional layers, providing theoretical guidance for the optimization of thermal performance and structural design of materials for intermediate-temperature SOFCs (IT-SOFCs).
