Antimony contamination in industrial wastewater requires effective simultaneous removal of both Sb(III) and Sb( V ) species, yet their contrasting chemical characteristics pose significant challenges for conventional adsorbents. Here, we demonstrate that amorphous chitosan-Fe coordination polymer sheets (CS-Fe aCPs) achieve exceptional Sb(III/ V ) capture through a dual-mode synergistic mechanism. For Sb(III), ligand exchange dominates the adsorption process, wherein Sb(OH) 3 directly coordinates with Fe 3+ centers by displacing weakly-bound NO 3 − ligands, as evidenced by stoichiometric NO 3 − release and significant Fe 2p binding energy shifts in XPS analysis. This process further triggers sequential Sb bridging interactions, producing an S-shaped isotherm and enabling a maximum capacity of 626.97 mg/g. For Sb( V ), the persistently high positive surface charge (+15 to +30 mV across pH 2–10) facilitates electrostatic capture of [Sb(OH) 6 ] − anions, supplemented by partial ligand displacement, achieving 574.55 mg/g capacity. The amorphous coordination framework provides abundant coordinatively unsaturated Fe 3+ sites and structural adaptability essential for accommodating both Sb species without steric hindrance. This dual-mode synergy ensures pH-insensitive performance, exceptional resistance to competing ions, and stable operation in fixed-bed column and membrane filtration systems, establishing CS-Fe aCPs as a cost-effective platform for mixed Sb speciation remediation.

The increasing release of antimony (Sb) into water environments due to anthropogenic activities poses significant ecological risks. This study developed a novel hybrid material, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8-iron nanoparticles (ZIF-8-Fe NPs), which demonstrates a synergistic adsorption-oxidation mechanism for efficient removal of Sb(III) from aqueous solutions. Major findings reveal that at an initial Sb(III) concentration of 1 mg L-1, ZIF-8-Fe NPs achieved a 73.3% removal efficiency within three hours through the dual processes of direct adsorption and oxidation of Sb(III) to Sb(V). Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the removal mechanism involved both direct adsorption of Sb(III) by ZIF-8-Fe NPs and oxidation of Sb(III) to Sb(V), with two distinct morphologies of Sb adsorbed on the surface. The formation of covalent bonds (Zn-OH-Sb and Fe-O-Sb) was identified as the key factor in removing both Sb(III) and Sb(V) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption process conformed to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics, with correlation coefficients (R²) of 0.959 and 0.999, respectively. The proposed mechanism suggests that the formation of Zn-OH-Sb and Fe-O-Sb covalent bonds plays a crucial role in Sb(III) removal. Significantly, ZIF-8-Fe NPs achieved removal efficiencies of 91.5% and 94.8% for Sb(III) at environmentally relevant concentrations of 100 µg L-1 and 20 µg L-1, in actual mining wastewater, demonstrating its practical applicability. This study establishes that ZIF-8-Fe NPs constitute an effective nanomaterial with significant potential for Sb(III) remediation in wastewater.

Despite the oxidation mechanism of antimonite (Sb(Ⅲ)) by biosynthesized iron nanoparticles (Fe NPs) has been reported, the impact of coexisting components in acid mine drainage (AMD) on the Sb(III) oxidation by Fe NPs is unknown. Herein, how the coexisting components in AMD affect Sb(Ⅲ) oxidation by Fe NPs was investigated. Firstly, Fe NPs achieved complete oxidation of Sb(Ⅲ) (100%), while only 65.0% of Sb(Ⅲ) was oxidized when As(Ⅲ) was added, due to competitive oxidation between As(Ⅲ) and Sb(Ⅲ), which was verified by characterization analysis. Secondly, the decline in solution pH improved Sb(Ⅲ) oxidation from 69.5% (pH 4) to 100% (pH 2), which could be attributed to the rise of Fe 3+ in solution promoting the electron transfer between Sb(Ⅲ) and Fe NPs. Thirdly, the oxidation efficiencies of Sb(Ⅲ) fell by 14.9 and 44.2% following the addition of oxalic and citric acid , respectively, resulting from the fact that these two acids reduced the redox potential of Fe NPs, thereby inhibiting Sb(Ⅲ) oxidation by Fe NPs. Finally, the interference effect of coexisting ions was studied, where PO 4 3− significantly reduced Sb(Ⅲ) oxidation efficiency due to the occupation of the surface-active sites on Fe NPs. Overall, this study has significant implications for the prevention of Sb contamination in AMD.

A portable and easy-use analytical system was established for speciation analysis of inorganic antimony (Sb(III) and Sb(V)) based on hydride generation-smartphone colorimetric method. Metal organic framework (Ag-MOF) was served as substrate here. Sb(III) was transformed to stibine (SbH 3 ) during hydride generation process, SbH 3 was then transported and reacted with Ag-MOF in reaction bottle, leading to its color turn to black from light gray, the variance was then distinguished by visual and smartphone mode. A detectable limit as low as 0.01 μg/mL can be readout by smartphone mode. Besides, citric acid was used as masking reagent for speciation analysis of Sb(III) and Sb(V). Several real environmental water samples were further detected using this colorimetric system and recoveries for those samples were 90–106 %. The potential application of this method for rapid and field analysis of inorganic antimony was further demonstrated by analysis of a certified reference water sample (BWZ6657-2016B).

Background Microbial antimonite [Sb(III)] oxidation converts toxic Sb(III) into less toxic antimonate [Sb(V)] and plays an important role in the biogeochemical Sb cycle. Currently, little is known about the mechanisms underlying bacterial Sb(III) resistance and oxidation. Results In this study, Tn5 transposon mutagenesis was conducted in the Sb(III)-oxidizing strain Pseudomonas stutzeri TS44 to isolate the genes responsible for Sb(III) resistance and oxidation. An insertion mutation into gshA, encoding a glutamate cysteine ligase involved in glutathione biosynthesis, generated a strain called P. stutzeri TS44-gshA 540 . This mutant strain was complemented with a plasmid carrying gshA to generate strain P. stutzeri TS44-gshA-C. The transcription of gshA , the two superoxide dismutase (SOD)-encoding genes sodB and sodC as well as the catalase-encoding gene katE was monitored because gshA -encoded glutamate cysteine ligase is responsible for the biosynthesis of glutathione (GSH) and involved in the cellular stress defense system as are superoxide dismutase and catalase responsible for the conversion of ROS. In addition, the cellular content of total ROS and in particular H 2 O 2 was analyzed. Compared to the wild type P. stutzeri TS44 and TS44-gshA-C, the mutant P. stutzeri TS44-gshA 540 had a lower GSH content and exhibited an increased content of total ROS and H 2 O 2 and increased the Sb(III) oxidation rate. Furthermore, the transcription of sodB , sodC and katE was induced by Sb(III). A positive linear correlation was found between the Sb(III) oxidation rate and the H 2 O 2 content ( R
2 = 0.97), indicating that the accumulated H 2 O 2 is correlated to the increased Sb(III) oxidation rate. Conclusions Based on the results, we propose that a disruption of the pathway involved in ROS-protection allowed H 2 O 2 to accumulate. In addition to the previously reported enzyme mediated Sb(III) oxidation, the mechanism of bacterial oxidation of Sb(III) to Sb(V) includes a non-enzymatic mediated step using H 2 O 2 as the oxidant.

The present study investigates the efficacy of newly developed Zr-based metal–organic frameworks, specifically MIP-206, and its amine-modified counterpart, MIP-206-NH 2 , for the re-covery of antimony (Sb) from both synthetic and actual mining wastewater. Batch method studies were employed to examine the effect of waste media pH, Sb concentration, process kinetics, and the performance of the regeneration solution. MIP-206-NH 2 exhibited impressive separation capabilities, achieving 102.18 mg/g and 63.23 mg/g for Sb (V) and Sb (III), respectively. In contrast, the pristine MIP-206 reached maximum values of 26.26 mg/g for Sb (V) and 16.95 mg/g for Sb (III). The separation process was well-described by the Langmuir equation, and the kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model. Although the amine modification resulted in a decrease in the surface area of MIP-206 from 1345.21 to 1169.86 m 2 /g, SEM and XRD analyses confirmed that the structural integrity of MIP-206-NH 2 remained unchanged. In terms of reusability, MIP-206-NH 2 maintained up to 90% of its separation performance over 9 cycles, while MIP-206 demonstrated effectiveness for 7 cycles. The regeneration solution exhibited a capacity of approximately 0.63 mol/L for Sb (V) and 0.71 mol/L for Sb (III). Furthermore, MIP-206 and MIP-206-NH 2 demonstrated successful application in selectively separating Sb from real mining wastewater.

In order to realize the good selective removal of Sb(III) from the multi-ions coexisting water, Sb(III)-imprinted hyperbranched polyamide–functionalized sodium alginate (IIPSA) microspheres were successfully prepared. IIPSA microspheres were characterised via FT-IR and SEM-EDS. The selective adsorption performances and reusability of IIPSA microspheres were investigated. Results showed that the optimum grafting conditions were the dosage of HA 1 g at 40 °C for 1 h and the optimum ion-imprinted conditions were the dosage of 2 wt % glutaraldehyde 100 mL at 60 °C for 2 h. Compared with non-imprinted microsphere, the maximum adsorption capacity of IIPSA microsphere improved by 52% and IIPSA microsphere had better selectivity for the removal of Sb(III) from solutions containing other ions. The adsorption mechanisms conformed to a monolayer adsorption dominated by chemical interactions with a spontaneous exothermic process. After 8 adsorption-desorption, the adsorption capacity of IIPSA microspheres retained more than 90%, and the Sb(III) selectivity was relatively stable.

The annual influx of antimony (Sb) into the environment due to the widespread use of Sb compounds in industry and agriculture has become of global concern. Herein, a functional nanomaterial composite based on loading bimetallic iron/nickel nanoparticles on reduced graphene oxide (rGO-Fe/Ni) was initially prepared in a one-step phytogenic synthesis using a green tea extract. Subsequently, when applied for Sb(III) removal, the removal efficiency of rGO-Fe/Ni reached 69.7% within 3 h at an initial Sb concentration of 1.0 mg·L −1 . Advanced materials characterization via scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that Sb(III) was initially adsorbed onto the surface of rGO and then oxidized to Sb(V). This result was also supported by adsorption isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamic analysis. These studies revealed that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic, following a Langmuir adsorption model with pseudo-second-order kinetics and allowed a Sb(III) removal mechanism based on adsorption and catalytic oxidation to be proposed. Furthermore, when rGO-Fe/Ni was practically used to remove Sb(III) in groundwater a 95.7% removal efficiency was obtained at 1 mg·L −1 Sb(III), thus successfully demonstrating that rGO-Fe/Ni has significant potential for the practical remediation of Sb contaminated groundwater.

Antimony (Sb) contamination in water poses significant environmental and health risks due to its high toxicity, persistence and complex redox behavior. Magnetic spinel ferrites (MFe2O4) have shown promise for Sb removal; however, the intrinsic influence of divalent metal species (M2+) in regulating Sb(III)/Sb(V) adsorption performance and interfacial mechanisms remains poorly understood. In this study, MnFe2O4, ZnFe2O4and NiFe2O4nanoparticles were synthesized and systematically evaluated to elucidate how M2+governs Sb immobilization behavior. Batch adsorption experiments revealed pronounced M–dependent selectivity. MnFe2O4exhibited the highest Sb(III) adsorption capacity (229.89 mg·g−1), whereas NiFe2O4showed superior affinity toward Sb(V) (up to 257.07 mg·g−1). Adsorption kinetics for both Sb species followed pseudo-second-order models, indicating chemically controlled processes. Isotherm analyses indicated predominantly monolayer complexation for Sb(III), while Sb(V) adsorption displayed mixed adsorption characteristics, reflecting surface heterogeneity. Mechanistic investigations based on FTIR and XPS analyses suggest that Sb(III) immobilization is dominated by inner-sphere complexation with surface Fe–O/Fe–OH groups, whereas Sb(V) adsorption involves synergistic coordination with both Fe–O and M–O (Mn–O/Ni–O) functional groups. XPS analysis of Sb-loaded ZnFe2O4revealed the coexistence of Sb(III) and Sb(V) species after Sb(III) adsorption, indicating surface-confined partial oxidation; the extent of solution-phase conversion was not independently quantified. Therefore, the redox process is interpreted as an interfacial phenomenon rather than bulk oxidation in solution. These results clarify that M2+species influence Sb removal behavior by modulating the reactivity of surface functional groups and interfacial redox characteristics, rather than merely altering adsorption capacity. This work provides spectroscopic insight into M-dependent structure–activity relationships in spinel ferrites and offers a theoretical basis for the rational design of magnetic adsorbents for selective and efficient Sb remediation.

Background ArsR-based whole-cell biosensors offer sensitive colorimetric detection of arsenite [As(III)], yet their broad reactivity toward Group 15 metalloids—especially antimonite [Sb(III)]—limits field specificity. The recently identified ant operon from Comamonas testosteroni JL40 confers Sb(III)-selective resistance via the efflux ATPase AntA, the metallochaperone AntC, and the regulator AntR, providing genetic parts to suppress Sb(III) cross-talk.Results We systematically introduced antA, antC, and three antR homologs into an ArsR regulator coupled with a deoxyviolacein reporter chassis (pJ23119-K12). Co-expression of AntA and AntC under a moderate constitutive promoter (PceuR) shifted the Sb(III) limit of detection (LOD) from 0.073 µM to 0.586 µM, with a modest increase in the As(III) LOD to 0.018 µM. Subsequent integration of AntR1 not only maintained the As(III) LOD at 0.018 µM but also unexpectedly amplified the As(III) signal, extending the linear range to 36 nM–37.5 µM (R² = 0.991). It suggests that AntR1 may modulate the transcriptional circuitry via cross-regulation, warranting further mechanistic inquiry. The modified biosensor TOP10/pJ23119-antACR1 exhibited high selectivity for As(III) over divalent metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Hg, Mn, Mg) and tolerated Sb(III) up to 1 µM. Performance was retained in 90% freshwater and 50% seawater matrices, enabling accurate quantification of 0–2.5 µM As(III) in deionized, tap, surface, and marine samples. Conclusion By coupling Sb(III)-specific ant efflux/sequestration components with an ArsR-based sensing module, we developed a portable, low-cost biosensor that overcomes longstanding As(III)/Sb(III) cross-reactivity and performs robustly in complex environmental waters.Graphic abstract

In this study, a novel nanoscale iron oxide (FeO x ) modified carbon nanotubes composite (FeO x @CNTs) was synthesized through a combined ball milling–hydrothermal two-step method and tested for aqueous Sb(III) removal efficiency and mechanisms. FeO x nanoparticles was successfully loaded on the surface of CNTs through functional groups such as hydroxyl (–OH), C–H, and C–O to enhance the removal efficiency of Sb(III) through adsorption and surface complexation. At a dosage of 0.02 g, a FeCl 3 ·6H 2 O-to-CNTs mass ratio of 3:1, and an initial solution pH of 6.3, the amount of Sb(III) removed by the prepared FeO x @CNTs reached 172 mg/g, which was 42.9 times higher than that of the pristine CNTs (4.01 mg/g). Chemical adsorption and oxidation were the main removal mechanisms. At the equilibrium Sb(III) concentration of 6.08 mg/L, 6.56% of initial Sb(III) was adsorbed onto the surface of FeO x @CNTs, and 81.3% of initial Sb(III) was oxidized to Sb(V) with lower toxicity. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model could better describe the adsorption of Sb(III) onto the FeO x @CNTs composite, indicating that adsorption was mainly controlled by chemical sorption . In the adsorption isotherm equation, the Redlich–Peterson model provided a better fit of Sb(III) adsorption onto the FeO x @CNTs composite than the Langmuir and Freundlich models, which further indicated that the adsorption process was a hybrid removal process dominated by chemical sorption. The presence of CO 3 2− slightly promoted the removal of Sb(III) from aqueous solution. The synthesized composite was magnetic and could be easily separated from the solution by an external magnetic field at the end of the sorption experiment. Based on these findings, the FeO x @CNTs nanocomposite is expected to provide an environmentally-friendly adsorbent with a strong sorption capacity for remediating Sb(III) in water environments.

We developed an approach of magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction (MSPE) based on magnetic graphene nanocomposite rGO/Fe3O4 for the determination of trace Sb(III) and Sb(V) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were used to characterize the sorbent. The adsorption behavior of Sb(III) and Sb(V) on rGO/Fe3O4 was investigated. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of Sb(V) was nearly zero at pH = 9, while Sb(III) could be well adsorbed on rGO/Fe3O4. The magnetic SPE parameters including pH, adsorbent dosage, eluent type, and volume were optimized. The detection limit of Sb(III) under ideal conditions was 6 ng L−1, and the relative standard deviation was 7.6% (c = 1 g L−1, n = 7). The technique was used to identify Sb(III) at trace levels in environmental water samples, and its validity was examined by recovery experiments and the examination of an approved reference material.
