Restricted fiber contraction during amidoximation process for reinforced-concrete structured nanofiber sphere with superior Sb(V) adsorption capacity

Yonghui Tu,Long-Fei Ren,Yuanxin Lin,Jiahui Shao,Yiliang He

Amidoxime-polyacrylonitrile (APAN) nanofiber possesses advantages of adsorbing heavy metals for abundant amidoxime groups. However, it easily suffers from poor mechanical property caused by fiber contraction during amidoximation process. Inspired by high mechanical strength of reinforced concrete, we embedded stiff polylactic acid (PLA) skeletons into PAN matrix to prepare reinforced-concrete structured nanofiber sphere (APAN/PLA NFS) through solution blending. Preparation parameters including polymer concentration and PAN/PLA ratio were optimized as 4.0% and 1:1, and coarse sphere surface, numerous mesopores and large pore volume (19.3 mL/g) were endowed. Scanning electron microscope results showed restricted fiber contraction with nitrile conversion of 58.1%. APAN/PLA NFS showed robust compressive strength of 3.28 MPa with strain of 80%, and X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimeter analysis revealed that crystalline PLA reinforced non-crystalline PAN through molecule-level compatibility. Compared with plain APAN sphere, Sb(V) adsorption from water for APAN/PLA NFS showed better performance with superhigh capacity of 949.7 mg/g and fast rate (equilibrium time of 2 h), which was owing to abundant mesopores preserved by PLA skeletons. These findings indicated that PLA was a promising skeletal candidate which could protect APAN from fiber contraction during amidoximation process and could strongly expand adsorption capacity of APAN for heavy metals.

Speciation analysis of Sb(III) and Sb(V) by hydride generation-smartphone colorimetric system using metal organic framework as substrate

Xiaoyu Dong,Lanlan Li,Jihong Chen,Jiayuan Tang,Shu Zhang,Qian Yao,Zhirong Zou

A portable and easy-use analytical system was established for speciation analysis of inorganic antimony (Sb(III) and Sb(V)) based on hydride generation-smartphone colorimetric method. Metal organic framework (Ag-MOF) was served as substrate here. Sb(III) was transformed to stibine (SbH 3 ) during hydride generation process, SbH 3 was then transported and reacted with Ag-MOF in reaction bottle, leading to its color turn to black from light gray, the variance was then distinguished by visual and smartphone mode. A detectable limit as low as 0.01 μg/mL can be readout by smartphone mode. Besides, citric acid was used as masking reagent for speciation analysis of Sb(III) and Sb(V). Several real environmental water samples were further detected using this colorimetric system and recoveries for those samples were 90–106 %. The potential application of this method for rapid and field analysis of inorganic antimony was further demonstrated by analysis of a certified reference water sample (BWZ6657-2016B).

Effect of Sulfate and Acid Orange 7 on Sb(V) Removal by Anaerobic Granular Sludge: Role of Granular Activated Carbon

Li Qi,Zhu Yanping,Liu Yanbiao,Chen Xiaoguang,Jiang Nan,Yan Mengying,Li Xuhua,Xing Haoyu,Bao Yinzhou,Huang Manhong

Antimonate (Sb(V)), sulfate and acid orange 7 (AO7) are common pollutants in printing and dyeing wastewater. Currently, there have been no reports about the effects of sulfate and AO7 on Sb(V) removal by anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS). In this study, the Sb(V) removal and Sb(Ш) accumulation was revealed in presence of sulfate and AO7, and the role of adding granular activated carbon (GAC) was investigated. Results showed that sulfate inhibited Sb(V) removal by AnGS (S + Sb, k = 0.101). GAC alleviated the inhibition of sulfate on Sb(V) removal and Sb(V) removal rate increased by 1.9 times (GAC + S + Sb, k = 0.187). Meanwhile, GAC promoted sulfate reduction by AnGS. AO7 inhibited sulfate reduction, thereby alleviating the inhibition of sulfate on Sb(V) removal, and Sb(V) removal rate increased by 1.5 times (S + Sb + dye, k = 0.147). When Sb(V), sulfate and AO7 coexisted, adding GAC actually inhibited Sb(V) removal (GAC + S + Sb + dye, k = 0.067), which may be due to GAC promoted the reduction of sulfate and AO7 by AnGS. The microbial community analysis revealed that Acinetobacter genus was related to Sb(V) reduction, with higher relative abundance in GAC + S + Sb (49.4%) and S + Sb + dye groups (28.9%). These results provided guidance for anaerobic treatment of printing and dyeing wastewater. Graphical Abstract

Disrupting ROS-protection mechanism allows hydrogen peroxide to accumulate and oxidize Sb(III) to Sb(V) in Pseudomonas stutzeri TS44

Wang Dan,Zhu Fengqiu,Wang Qian,Rensing Christopher,Yu Peng,Gong Jing,Wang Gejiao

Background Microbial antimonite [Sb(III)] oxidation converts toxic Sb(III) into less toxic antimonate [Sb(V)] and plays an important role in the biogeochemical Sb cycle. Currently, little is known about the mechanisms underlying bacterial Sb(III) resistance and oxidation. Results In this study, Tn5 transposon mutagenesis was conducted in the Sb(III)-oxidizing strain Pseudomonas stutzeri TS44 to isolate the genes responsible for Sb(III) resistance and oxidation. An insertion mutation into gshA, encoding a glutamate cysteine ligase involved in glutathione biosynthesis, generated a strain called P. stutzeri TS44-gshA 540 . This mutant strain was complemented with a plasmid carrying gshA to generate strain P. stutzeri TS44-gshA-C. The transcription of gshA , the two superoxide dismutase (SOD)-encoding genes sodB and sodC as well as the catalase-encoding gene katE was monitored because gshA -encoded glutamate cysteine ligase is responsible for the biosynthesis of glutathione (GSH) and involved in the cellular stress defense system as are superoxide dismutase and catalase responsible for the conversion of ROS. In addition, the cellular content of total ROS and in particular H 2 O 2 was analyzed. Compared to the wild type P. stutzeri TS44 and TS44-gshA-C, the mutant P. stutzeri TS44-gshA 540 had a lower GSH content and exhibited an increased content of total ROS and H 2 O 2 and increased the Sb(III) oxidation rate. Furthermore, the transcription of sodB , sodC and katE was induced by Sb(III). A positive linear correlation was found between the Sb(III) oxidation rate and the H 2 O 2 content ( R 2  = 0.97), indicating that the accumulated H 2 O 2 is correlated to the increased Sb(III) oxidation rate. Conclusions Based on the results, we propose that a disruption of the pathway involved in ROS-protection allowed H 2 O 2 to accumulate. In addition to the previously reported enzyme mediated Sb(III) oxidation, the mechanism of bacterial oxidation of Sb(III) to Sb(V) includes a non-enzymatic mediated step using H 2 O 2 as the oxidant.

Comparative Sb(V) removal efficacy of different iron oxides from textile wastewater: effects of co-existing anions and dye compounds

Zhou Chuchen,Wan Lei,Lou Zimo,Wu Shuang,Baig Shams Ali,Xu Xinhua

Elevated Sb(V) concentration in textile wastewater is a growing environmental concern worldwide and has received wider attention in recent years. Iron oxides possess appealing characteristics as efficient and cost-effective adsorbents in large-scale applications. In the present study, Sb(V) adsorption capacity of α-Fe 2 O 3 , γ-Fe 2 O 3 , and Fe 3 O 4 was compared under experimental conditions close to the practical textile wastewater treatment. Results demonstrated that α-Fe 2 O 3 performed better under different pH values, reaction times, dye compounds, and co-existing ions as compared to γ-Fe 2 O 3 and Fe 3 O 4 , and the adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 8 h. Sb(V) adsorption is found to be highly pH dependent, and higher removal was achieved in lower pH, indicating the involvement of electrostatic interactions. The pH pzc value of α-Fe 2 O 3 was 7.15, which favored Sb(V) adsorption in practical wastewater having neutral pH value (pH ~ 7). Pseudo-first- and pseudo-second-order described the data and the simulated values of q e fitted well with the experimental values, indicating that pseudo-second-order model described the adsorption kinetics better with R 2 (> 0.95) higher than of pseudo-first-order plots. The Langmuir and Freundlich models both described well the sorption data of all the adsorbents, where the R 2 values were > 0.90 with a better fit in the Freundlich model for α-Fe 2 O 3 , suggesting that the adsorbent has heterogeneous surface characteristics. Similarly, characterizations revealed that the specific surface area, pore volume, and hydroxyl group content in α-Fe 2 O 3 were higher than others, making it easier for contaminants to bind on to the active sites. Furthermore, the effect of dyes and co-existing anions on Sb(V) adsorption was negligible, except for SO 4 2− , CO 3 2− , and PO 4 3− by the formation of inner-sphere complexes with iron oxides through competitive adsorption with [Sb(OH) 6 ] − . Findings from the present study suggested that α-Fe 2 O 3 effectively reduced Sb(V) in textile wastewater and could be a promising alternative for practical textile wastewater treatment. Exploring the feasibility of Zr-based metal–organic frameworks for the recovery of Sb (V) and Sb (III) from mining waste

Bu Daolu,Yang Hu,Zhang Haibo,Wang Liang,Wang Jiao,Liao Jie

The present study investigates the efficacy of newly developed Zr-based metal–organic frameworks, specifically MIP-206, and its amine-modified counterpart, MIP-206-NH 2 , for the re-covery of antimony (Sb) from both synthetic and actual mining wastewater. Batch method studies were employed to examine the effect of waste media pH, Sb concentration, process kinetics, and the performance of the regeneration solution. MIP-206-NH 2 exhibited impressive separation capabilities, achieving 102.18 mg/g and 63.23 mg/g for Sb (V) and Sb (III), respectively. In contrast, the pristine MIP-206 reached maximum values of 26.26 mg/g for Sb (V) and 16.95 mg/g for Sb (III). The separation process was well-described by the Langmuir equation, and the kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model. Although the amine modification resulted in a decrease in the surface area of MIP-206 from 1345.21 to 1169.86 m 2 /g, SEM and XRD analyses confirmed that the structural integrity of MIP-206-NH 2 remained unchanged. In terms of reusability, MIP-206-NH 2 maintained up to 90% of its separation performance over 9 cycles, while MIP-206 demonstrated effectiveness for 7 cycles. The regeneration solution exhibited a capacity of approximately 0.63 mol/L for Sb (V) and 0.71 mol/L for Sb (III). Furthermore, MIP-206 and MIP-206-NH 2 demonstrated successful application in selectively separating Sb from real mining wastewater.

Antimony(V) behavior during the Fe(II)-induced transformation of Sb(V)-bearing natural multicomponent secondary iron mineral under acidic conditions

Wangjun Lin,Linfeng Peng,Hui Li,Tangfu Xiao,Jianqiao Wang,Nana Wang,Xiangting Zhang,Hanmo Zhang

Fe(II)-induced phase transformations of secondary iron minerals have attracted considerable attention due to their influence on antimony (Sb) mobility. However, Fe(II)-induced natural multicomponent secondary iron mineral (nmSIM) transformations and the corresponding repartitioning of Sb on nmSIM under acidic conditions upon Fe(II) exposure have not been systematically examined. Herein, we investigated the effect of Fe(II) on nmSIM mineralogy and Sb mobility in Sb(V)-bearing nmSIM at pH 3.8 and 5.6 at various Fe(II) concentrations over 15 d. The Sb(V)-bearing nmSIM phase transformation occurred under both strongly and weakly acidic conditions without Fe(II) exposure, while the presence of Fe(II) significantly intensified the transformation, and substantial amounts of intermediary minerals, including jarosite , ferrihydrite , lepidocrocite and fougerite, formed during the initial reaction stage, especially at pH 5.6. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses confirmed that goethite and hematite were the primary final-stage transformation products of Sb(V)-bearing nmSIM, regardless of Fe(II) exposure. Throughout the Sb(V)-bearing nmSIM transformation at pH 3.8, Sb release was inversely related to the Fe(II) concentration in the initial stage, and after maximum release was achieved, Sb was gradually repartitioned onto the nmSIM. No Sb repartitioning occurred in the absence of Fe(II) at pH 5.6, but the introduction of Fe(II) suppressed Sb release and improved Sb repartitioning on nmSIM. This transformation was conducive to Sb reimmobilization on Sb(V)-bearing nmSIM due to the structural incorporation of Sb into the highly crystalline goethite and hematite generated by the Sb(V)-bearing nmSIM transformation, and no reduction of Sb(V) occurred. These results imply that Fe(II) can trigger mineralogical changes in Sb(V)-bearing nmSIM and have important impacts on Sb partitioning under acidic conditions. These new insights are essential for assessing the mobility and availability of Sb in acid mine drainage areas.

Valence-Dependent Adsorption of Sb(III) and Sb(V) on Spinel MFe2O4 Ferrites: Spectroscopic Insights into Surface Hydroxyl and Metal–Oxygen Interactions

Liang Ma,Jie Zheng,Fuqiang Li,Yu Chen,Runshen He,Jiayi Zhang,Nana Wang,Zengping Ning,Zhenjie Zhao

Antimony (Sb) contamination in water poses significant environmental and health risks due to its high toxicity, persistence and complex redox behavior. Magnetic spinel ferrites (MFe2O4) have shown promise for Sb removal; however, the intrinsic influence of divalent metal species (M2+) in regulating Sb(III)/Sb(V) adsorption performance and interfacial mechanisms remains poorly understood. In this study, MnFe2O4, ZnFe2O4and NiFe2O4nanoparticles were synthesized and systematically evaluated to elucidate how M2+governs Sb immobilization behavior. Batch adsorption experiments revealed pronounced M–dependent selectivity. MnFe2O4exhibited the highest Sb(III) adsorption capacity (229.89 mg·g−1), whereas NiFe2O4showed superior affinity toward Sb(V) (up to 257.07 mg·g−1). Adsorption kinetics for both Sb species followed pseudo-second-order models, indicating chemically controlled processes. Isotherm analyses indicated predominantly monolayer complexation for Sb(III), while Sb(V) adsorption displayed mixed adsorption characteristics, reflecting surface heterogeneity. Mechanistic investigations based on FTIR and XPS analyses suggest that Sb(III) immobilization is dominated by inner-sphere complexation with surface Fe–O/Fe–OH groups, whereas Sb(V) adsorption involves synergistic coordination with both Fe–O and M–O (Mn–O/Ni–O) functional groups. XPS analysis of Sb-loaded ZnFe2O4revealed the coexistence of Sb(III) and Sb(V) species after Sb(III) adsorption, indicating surface-confined partial oxidation; the extent of solution-phase conversion was not independently quantified. Therefore, the redox process is interpreted as an interfacial phenomenon rather than bulk oxidation in solution. These results clarify that M2+species influence Sb removal behavior by modulating the reactivity of surface functional groups and interfacial redox characteristics, rather than merely altering adsorption capacity. This work provides spectroscopic insight into M-dependent structure–activity relationships in spinel ferrites and offers a theoretical basis for the rational design of magnetic adsorbents for selective and efficient Sb remediation.

New insights into adsorption of As(V) and Sb(V) from aqueous by HCO–(Fe3O4)x adsorbent: Adsorption behaviors, competition and mechanisms

Weimin Chen,Renjian Deng,Yilin Chen,Chuang Wang,Baolin Hou,Saijun Zhou,Andrew Hursthouse

Arsenic and antimony removal technology have received significant attention due to their considerable danger to aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we designed HCO–(Fe 3 O 4 ) x adsorbents with substantial functional groups, ample pore spaces, and considerable surface area , specially tailored for the simultaneous adsorption of pentavalent arsenic (As( V )) and pentavalent antimony (Sb(V)). The adsorption performance of HCO–(Fe 3 O 4 ) x was subjected variably to the Ce/Fe molar ratio (CFMR), solution pH, and co-existing anions (SO 4 2− , PO 4 3− , SiO 3 2− ). The affinity order of As(V) and Sb(V) onto HCO–(Fe 3 O 4 ) x in binary systems was pH-dependent. At a pH of 2.0, Sb( V ) exhibited stronger adsorption than As(V), whereas the opposite trend occurred at pH levels above 4.0. Analysis of the kinetic data revealed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was the most appropriate, indicating that chemical adsorption was the predominant mechanism. Notably, the formation of inner-sphere complexes led to a higher adsorption rate for As( V ) compared to Sb(V), attributed to a lower energy barrier of 0.863 eV, facilitating the breakdown of the Fe O bond in As(V)'s asymmetric tetrahedral structure. Various analyses (FTIR, XRD, and XPS) demonstrated that adsorption mechanisms involved multiple processes like hydrogen bonding , ligand exchange, electrostatic attraction, and complexation. The primary contributions for the adsorption of As( V ) and Sb(V) were the inner-sphere complex of cerium , oxygen and arsenic atoms (Ce O As) and the outer-sphere complex of iron, oxygen and antimony atoms (Fe O Sb), respectively, indicating significant differences in the mechanisms. These findings underscored the potential of HCO–(Fe 3 O 4 ) x in mitigating As( V ) and Sb(V) water pollution, emphasizing its considerable promise as an effective remediation agent.

Applications and characteristics of Fe-Mn binary oxides for Sb(V) removal in textile wastewater: Selective adsorption and the fixed-bed column study

Kunlun Yang,Yuanli Liu,Yizhou Li,Zhen Cao,Chuchen Zhou,Zheni Wang,Xurui Zhou,Shams Ali Baig,Xinhua Xu

In this study, the selective adsorption performance of different Fe-Mn binary oxides (FMBOs) towards Sb(V) in the textile wastewater under different concentrations of coexisting anions, surfactants and dyes were investigated. Results showed that the influences of different anions on the Sb(V) removal followed an order of phosphate > carbonate > sulfate > nitrate > chloride. The frequently-used organic acid of acetate was found to have insignificant effect. The coexisting surfactant with sulfonic groups could have adverse effect on the removal due to sulfonic groups could compete the adsorptive sites on Fe oxides with Sb(V). While the quaternary ammonium surfactant might have minor effect. The influences of the three widely used dyes on the Sb(V) adsorption decreased in the following order: reactive black-5 >acid orange-7> disperse blue-60, which confirmed that the dyes with sulfonic groups would have relatively higher effect. The selective adsorption capacities of Sb(V) by FMBOs followed an order of FMBO 3 > FMBO 5 >FMBO 10 > FMBO 20 >PFO. Fixed-bed column adsorption supplied useful parameters and evidently indicated that the cyclic utilization of FMBO 3 was cost-efficient for practical dynamic Sb(V) removal. The Sb(V) removal by FMBO 3 from real textile wastewater can simultaneously improve the removal efficiency, stabilize pH and prevent the increase of iron concentration as compared to the traditional coagulation, further demonstrating the high practical applicability of FMBO 3 .

Functional adjustment and cyclic application of Fe–Mn bimetal composite for Sb(V) removal: Transformation of iron oxides forms and a stable regeneration method

Kunlun Yang,Cheng Li,Xiaomin Wang,Yuanli Liu,Yizhou Li,Chuchen Zhou,Zheni Wang,Jiasheng Zhou,Zhen Cao,Xinhua Xu

In this work, the surface properties, functional groups and stability of Fe–Mn bimetal composite (FMBC) was modified through sintering to improve the weaknesses of pristine FMBC, such as poor separation performance, high amount of dissolved Fe and Mn, and easy phase transformation. Characterization analysis indicated that 2-line ferrihydrite in sintered FMBC (SFMC) gradually transformed into hematite with the phase-transition temperature of 450 °C. With the increasing sintering temperature and time, the dehydroxylation reaction enhanced and gradually became irreversible, while the BET surface area and porosity of SFMC firstly increased and then decreased, resulting in the initial increase and then sharp decrease of the amount of exposed hydroxyl groups on SFMC. The sintering treatment greatly improved the separation performance and stability of SFMC. 350 °C and 2 h were determined as the optimal sintering conditions of SFMC in this study and the calculated maximum adsorption capacity of optimal SFMC reached up to 95 mg/g. Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetics model can describe the Sb(V) adsorption data well. As compared to pristine FMBC, optimal SFMC presented larger BET surface area and porosity, better separation performance and stability, lower dissolved Fe and Mn amount, larger cyclic adsorption efficiency and enough ability for Sb(V) removal in real textile wastewater. Furthermore, the inner sphere complexation between Sb(OH) 6 - and exposed hydroxyl groups played a key role in adsorption. Additionally, the NaCl + NaOH elution exhibited greater Sb(V) desorption performance and effectively retarded the phase transformation of SFMC than NaOH solution.

Combining high electron transfer efficiency and oxidation resistance in nZVI with coatings of microbial extracellular polymeric substances to enhance Sb(V) reduction and adsorption

Lu Zhou,Ang Li,Fang Ma,Heping Zhao,Fengxia Deng,Shanshan Pi,Aiqi Tang,Jixian Yang

In this work, we prepared microbial extracellular polymeric substances-coated nano zero valent iron (EPS@nZVI) for Sb(V) removal. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the synthesized EPS@nZVI had superior maximum adsorption capacity (202 mg/g at pH = 5) for Sb(V), much higher than that of bare nZVI especially under nonacidic conditions. The adsorption results fit the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Redlich-Peterson model well, implying that the adsorption was more like a chemical adsorption process. The spectral analysis showed that EPS could protect inner Fe 0 from air, preventing nZVI from generating a passivation layer on the surface, and decreasing the concentration of hydroxyl radicals in aqueous environment, which increased the reactivity of nZVI and strengthened the reducibility and adsorbability of nZVI. The coated EPS can improve the reactivity of nZVI instead of inhibiting its electron transfer. Moreover, the electrostatic repulsion between EPS@nZVI and Sb(OH) 6 − was decreased compared to that of bare nZVI after the introduction of EPS. The functional groups of EPS could play a significant role in the reduction adsorption, especially under alkaline conditions where nZVI was passivated. This work proved that EPS@nZVI has great prospects in simultaneously combining the reduction activity of nZVI in water and its stability in air.
