The solid acid-catalyzed esterification of pentaerythritol with isomeric carboxylic acids,(2-ethylhexanoic acid and isononanoic acid) constitutes a green and sustainable synthetic route. However, the intrinsic hydrophilicity of conventional solid acid catalysts impedes the desorption of water generated during esterification, thereby promoting the reverse hydrolysis reaction and substantially limiting catalytic efficiency. Herein, a hydrophobic porous poly(divinylbenzene) (PDVB) layer was integrated with the solid acid SnO/Al 2 O 3 via a hydrothermal in-situ growth approach to fabricate a series of SnO/Al 2 O 3 @PDVB composite catalysts. By tuning the mass ratio of SnO/Al 2 O 3 to PDVB, the hydrophobicity, pore structure parameters, and surface acidic sites of the composite catalyst SnO/Al 2 O 3 @PDVB can be effectively modulated. Characterization results indicate that when the mass ratio of SnO/Al 2 O 3 to PDVB is 1:7, the water contact angle of SnO/Al 2 O 3 @PDVB catalyst increases markedly from 14.0° (pristine SnO/Al 2 O 3 ) to 121.8°. Esterification experiments demonstrate that the presence of SnO/Al 2 O 3 @PDVB enhances the pentaerythritol conversion from 61.5% to 99.2% under optimized conditions (200 °C, 6 h). Furthermore, the catalyst retained high activity over four consecutive cycles, maintaining a pentaerythritol conversion of 96.0%. The performance improvement is ascribed to the hydrophobic PDVB component, which facilitates rapid water removal from the catalyst surface, drives the equilibrium toward ester formation, and increases the accessibility of active acid sites. This work not only boosts the esterification efficiency of pentaerythritol but also offers a rational design strategy for developing high-performance, water-tolerant solid acid catalysts.

To address the need for high-sensitivity carbon monoxide (CO) gas sensing at room temperature, a CO gas sensor based on Au-modified tin oxide/zinc oxide (SnO₂/ZnO) nanocomposites is fabricated. SnO₂ nanoparticles, ZnO nanosheets, and Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized using sacrificial template, hydrothermal, and chemical reduction methods, respectively. The resulting nanocomposite was then drop-casted onto interdigitated electrodes and dried to obtain the CO gas sensor. The performance of the sensor was evaluated using a custom airtight chamber and a semiconductor parameter analyzer. The n–n heterojunction between SnO₂ and ZnO significantly increased oxygen vacancy in the composite material, enhancing surface chemisorption of oxygen. Moreover, the catalytic sensitization effect of AuNPs facilitated electron migration, while their inherent spillover effect promoted the activation of gas molecule interactions. Consequently, the sensor exhibited a high response (22.11%) to 70 ppm CO at room temperature, along with excellent stability, selectivity, and anti-interference capabilities. This work offers a promising approach for developing highly sensitive room-temperature gas sensors.

Graphical Foam supported : The hierarchical bimetallic electrocatalyst comprising Cu foam-supported bundle-like structure with thin amorphous SnO shell (Sn-24 h@CB) was successfully synthesized for highly efficient electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide. An unprecedented partial current density of C1 products (CO and HCOOH) up to 128.6 mA cm −2 was achieved with a Faradaic efficiency of ∼80 % in H-type cell. Renewable electricity-driven reduction of CO 2 into value-added chemicals has been recognized as a promising sustainable energy conversion method to achieve carbon-neutrality. Although Sn-based catalysts show excellent selectivity towards CO and HCOOH in CO 2 reduction, the reaction activity, i. e. current density, remains quite low (<100 mA cm −2 ). Herein, a hierarchical bimetallic electrocatalyst consisting of Cu foam-supported bundle-like structure and thin amorphous SnO layer was fabricated for efficient electroreduction of CO 2 to C1 products (CO and HCOOH). The hierarchical structure ensured higher large electrochemically active surface area, while the thin amorphous SnO layer could efficiently adsorb CO 2 , and stabilize the *CO 2 − intermediate formed in the rate-determining step, thereby boosting the reaction activity of CO 2 reduction. As a result, an unprecedented partial current density of 128.6 mA cm −2 was achieved for C1 products at −1.4 V vs. RHE with a Faradaic efficiency of 79.2 % in an H-type cell. The strategy of integrating optimized structure with active site here may be beneficial to other related energy conversion systems.

In perovskite detectors that utilize SnO₂ as an electron transport layer (ETL), the preparation of SnO₂ films using the solution method results in a significant number of defects. Additionally, the presence of nano-aggregates in the aqueous solution of untreated SnO₂ colloids leads to surface unevenness in SnO₂ films prepared using the spin-coating method, which can affect the growth and crystallization of perovskite . Defects and surface unevenness in SnO₂ films affect the performance of perovskite detectors. To further optimize the performance of perovskite detectors, SnO₂ incorporating poly (ethylene glycol) bis (carboxymethyl) ether (PBE) was developed, employing the polymer as a modifier. The results of the study showed that the incorporation of PBE had two effects: 1) the ether oxygen within the PBE forms a coordination bond with SnO₂, thereby reducing oxygen vacancies , and 2) reducing nano-aggregation of SnO₂ colloidal aqueous solutions, obtaining more uniform SnO₂ films, and promoting the growth and crystallization of perovskite. Ultimately, the performance of the optimized device was improved. The external quantum efficiency (EQE) improved from 84.82 % to 89.29 %, the dark current density decreased from 3.27 × 10 - ⁹ A cm - ² to 1.03 × 10 - ¹⁰ A cm - ², the linear dynamic range (LDR) increased from 88.5 to 118.3 dB, and the stability was enhanced. The device maintained 64.9 % of its original efficiency after being stored for 23 days at 25 °C and 20–30 % humidity.

Chlorine (Cl 2 ), a toxic and hazardous gas with a pungent odor, has already posed threat to air quality and human health. Therefore, developing chlorine sensors with high response and low power consumption is crucial. In this work, raspberry-like SnO 2 decorated uniformly with SnS nanoparticles was synthesized via a facile solvothermal method followed by an in-situ sulfurization process, which can be used for highly selective and sensitive detection of Cl 2 at 50 °C. The SnS/SnO 2 sensor exhibits ultrahigh response (R g /R a = 1136) toward 10 ppm Cl 2 at optimal working temperature of 50 °C, achieving low detection limit down to 0.05 pp m (S = 1.52), which is 2.5 times higher than that of pure SnO 2 sensor. Its superior sensing performance can be attributed to the formation of the p-n heterostructure, which accelerates electron transfer within the material. More importantly, the as-prepared SnS/SnO 2 sensor still exhibits effective and stable detection performance toward residual chlorine in daily life, significantly extending its practical applicability and providing valuable reference for developing high-performance near room-temperature gas sensors.

Although silicon-based anode materials offer significantly higher specific capacity than graphite, their practical applications are limited by drawbacks such as large volume expansion, poor cycling stability and high production costs. Integrating transition metal oxides with silicon, coupled with a carbon coating layer, has been proven of effectiveness in enhancing the cycle stability of silicon-based anodes. Here we report the synthesis of a composite anode by combining tin(II) oxide (SnO) with waste silicon powder (wSi) of photovoltaic industry and introducing a carbon coating via in situ polymerization of resorcinol-formaldehyde followed by thermal pyrolysis. The resulting wSi/SnO@C composite anode exhibits improved rate and cycle performance, as characterized by a high reversible capacity of 1590 mAh g −1 at 3 A g −1 and a high retained capacity of 601 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 . Mixing the wSi/SnO@C composite with graphite at an appropriate mass ratio yields a practical applicable anode with robust cycle stability. Ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses reveal that SnO is irreversibly reduced to metallic Sn during the first discharge, which is then partially converted to SnF 2 together with the formation of Li x Sn alloy. The formed SnF 2 is supposed to enhance the stability of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and reduce the attack of electrolyte to Si particles, both contributing to the improved cycle stability. This work demonstrates that SnO-decorated Si@C composites hold a high promise as anode materials of lithium-ion batteries towards enhanced cycle life and power density.

A fast, environmentally friendly, and reproducible method is proposed to synthesize SnO nanoparticles in an ionic liquid which consists of choline chloride, urea, and SnCl 2 ·2H 2 O. The nano-sized SnO particles with a size of about 20–30 nm can be synthesized in 1 min without any further treatment and complicated infrastructures. When prolonging the reaction time, the SnO nanoparticles can be self-assembled into micro-sized balls with the hydrangea geometry. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy shows that the SnO nanoparticle consists of tetragonal structured crystals with the grain size of about 4–6 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy further certify the composition, chemical state, and chemical band of the prepared SnO samples. Moreover, the direct band gap of the SnO samples is highly dependent on the particle architectures. A larger band gap value of about 3.80 eV is obtained in the nano-sized SnO which may be due to the quantum size effect.

The development of high-performance anode material for sodium-ion batteries remains a challenge because of their low capacity, which limits their commercial application. Compared with carbon-based materials, metallic Sb and SnO-based anodes have received extensive attention because of their high theoretical specific capacity and safe working potential. The main problem faced is the serious volume expansion during charging and discharging, leading to irreversible loss of capacity and poor cycle life. In this paper, Sb/SnO@C composite material with adjustable ratio of Sb/SnO was prepared via electrospinning by encapsulating Sb and SnO particles in lantern-like carbon nanocages which connected through the nanofibers . The unique structure can not only effectively mitigate the volume changes during the cycle, but also provide multiple effective paths for ion and electron transport . The kinetic analysis is further performed with the assist of CV and EIS . The results show that the prepared composite can provide impressive Na + ions storage and transport performance, and can still deliver a reversible charging capacity of 413mAhg −1 after 200 cycles at a current density of 50mAg −1 , with a capacity retention ratio of 84%. This work provides a new strategy for the development of sodium ion batteries with high capacity and stable cycle performance.

Metal oxides have been widely studied as an efficient and robust electrode material for supercapacitors for a couple of decades due to their affordability, high capacitance, multiple oxidation states, pseudocapacitive nature, and excellent redox activity. In this paper, a SnO 2 -MnO 2 hierarchical nanostructure (HNS) composite has been developed via a cost-effective and straightforward hydrothermal reaction. FESEM and TEM analysis revealed flower-like and nanowire-like morphologies for SnO 2 and MnO 2 , respectively , with highly pure, crystalline tetragonal structure. The average size of SnO 2 microflowers and MnO 2 nanorods is 1.5 μm and 2.3 μm. The chemical composition and oxidation states of the samples were investigated using Energy-Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), specifying the adequate formation of the SnO 2 -MnO 2 HNS composite. The surface area and pore analysis of the samples reveal that the SnO 2 -MnO 2 HNS composite yields the highest BET surface area of 62.93 m 2 /g with mesoporous features centered at ~9 nm. Remarkably, at a low current rate of 1 A/g, the SnO 2 -MnO 2 HNS composite achieved a high capacitance of 520 F/g as compared to pure SnO 2 and MnO 2 in a three-electrode mode assembly at identical conditions. The emergence of heterointerfaces enhanced the capacitance of the composite by providing more surface area for charge transfer and storage at the electrode/electrolyte interface. An asymmetric hybrid supercapacitor (HASC) was constructed utilizing two pseudocapacitive electrode materials: a SnO 2 -MnO 2 HNS composite as the anode and FeSe 2 as the cathode, represented as SnO 2 -MnO 2 ||FeSe 2 . The fabricated HASC attained a high specific capacitance of 111 F/g, a high energy density of 44.5 Wh/kg, and a power density of 852 W/kg at 1 A/g. At higher current rates, the power density extends to 4153 W/kg, with an energy density of 15 Wh/kg. Similarly, notable stability was observed, with 93.5% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles during HASC assembly. Therefore, metal oxides are extensively explored as electrode materials for supercapacitors, and their superiority remains a top priority for researchers and engineers in the design of viable and renewable energy technologies.

Nitrite contamination poses a significant hazard to environmental safety and human health, making it essential to develop highly sensitive and selective detection methods. In this study, a ternary polyaniline/tin dioxide/molybdenum disulfide (PANI/SnO 2 /MoS 2 ) nanocomposite was designed and synthesized for high-performance electrochemical nitrite sensing. The nanocomposite was thoroughly characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with this nanocomposite was constructed as an electrochemical sensing platform for nitrite detection. The resulting sensor exhibited an electroactive surface area of 0.1344 cm 2 , which is 2.8 times that of the bare GCE. Owing to the synergistic effects among the three components, the sensor demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic activity towards nitrite oxidation. Under optimal conditions, it achieved a wide linear detection range from 0.9 μM to 1300 μM, with a sensitivity of 0.5606 μA · μM −1 · cm −2 , a detection limit of 0.33 μM (S/N = 3), and a quantification limit of 0.9 μM. The sensor also displayed outstanding selectivity, stability, and repeatability. Furthermore, it was successfully applied to detect nitrite in tap water samples, yielding satisfactory recovery rates.

Triethylamine (TEA), as an important chemical raw material, is widely used in pharmaceuticals, dyes, rubber, and other industries. However, its high volatility, strong irritancy, and flammable/explosive properties pose serious threats to production safety and human health. Therefore, the development of highly sensitive and stable TEA gas sensors holds significant practical importance. In this study, Au-doped tin dioxide (SnO₂) nanotube materials with varying doping concentrations were successfully prepared via a one-step electrospinning method combined with a calcination process.Gas-sensing performance tests demonstrated that the Au-composited SnO₂ nanotube sensor exhibited excellent response characteristics to 50 ppm TEA at a relatively low operating temperature (144°C), achieving a high response value (Ra/Rg) of 215.74. The incorporation of Au enabled the material to attain a narrower band gap (Eg) compared to pure SnO₂, thereby enhancing electron transfer capability. Moreover, the sensor displayed rapid response/recovery times (6s/91s), as well as good reproducibility and long-term stability. This facile preparation method and outstanding sensing performance suggest that Au-SnO₂ nanotube composites hold promising potential for practical TEA detection applications.

We successfully synthesized a novel core-shell hybrid metal oxide via a simple one-step hydrothermal method without annealing. This composite of Co 3 O 4 particles covered with SnO 2 –SnO (Co 3 O 4 @SnO 2 –SnO) predicted better performance compared to pure Co 3 O 4 , which strongly depends on the synthetic temperature. The Co 3 O 4 @SnO 2 –SnO prepared at a temperature of 250 °C (labeled Co 3 O 4 @SnO 2 –SnO-250) exhibited an outstanding specific capacitance of 325 F g −1 under the current density of 1 A g −1 , which was much higher than those of Co 3 O 4 (12.6 F g −1 ) and other composites. Additionally, the sample also exhibited good cycle stability performance with a retention rate of 100% after 5000 cycles at a current density of 5 A g −1 . Through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, the presumed mechanism was that Sn-O x decreases the surface electron densities of Co 3 O 4 , which is beneficial to OH − adsorption and specific capacitance improvement, and the synthetic temperature had a strong impact on the microstructure and thus on the surface electron densities. The most. obvious finding to emerge from this study is that the specific capacitance can be improved through adjusting the surface electron densities of transition metal oxides .
