In recent years, tetracycline (TC) has become an emerging refractory antibiotic pollutant due to excessive use and abuse. The aim of this work is to prepare aligned carbon nanofibrous (ACFs) membrane by electrospinning technology and then dope with SnO 2 -Sb to electrocatalytic degrade TC. The in-situ growth of SnO 2 -Sb on the carbon nanofiber surface to fabricate SnO 2 -Sb/ACFs membrane can increase the oxygen evolution reaction potential and improve conductivity. And the SnO 2 -Sb/ACFs membrane was used as the anodic membrane of a flow-through mode electrochemical membrane reactor to remove TC in aqueous solutions. The outstanding degradation performance of SnO 2 -Sb/ACFs membrane on TC was investigated systematically. The results show that the 3-layer SnO 2 -Sb/ACFs-3 membranes can effectively degrade 20 mg/L TC at an applied potential of 2.5 V. Moreover, SnO 2 -Sb/ACFs-3 membrane shows excellent degradation stability after 10 cycles of degradation experiments. For exploring the possible TC degradation pathways, HPLC-MS was used to identify the main intermediates during the electrochemical oxidation process. The anodic membrane electrode prepared in this work puts forward a new idea for the safe and efficient degradation of TC.

This study focused on the electrochemical oxidation of Acid Blue 9 (AB 9) under direct and pulse current modes using a Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/α,β-Polytetrafluoroethylene-Fe-PbO 2 (PTFE-Fe-PbO 2 ) anode. The results showed that 99.0% of AB 9 and 68.9% of COD could be eliminated at initial pH of 5, initial AB 9 concentration of 100 mg L -1 , pulse frequency of 4000 Hz, current density of 20 mA cm −2 and pulse duty cycle of 50% after 120 min of electrolysis. The pulse electrochemical oxidation of AB 9 at the investigated conditions followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. Compared with the direct current mode, 76.0% of energy consumption could be saved at pulse current mode. The effect of mass transfer and electrode distance on the pulse electrochemical oxidation of AB 9 was also investigated in terms of mass transfer coefficient and effectiveness factor, the results showed that the reduced electrode distance was beneficial to improve the mass transfer and oxidation efficiency, as well as the energy efficiency. LC-MS analysis revealed that benzenesulfonate group, C-N and C-S bonds in AB 9 molecule were initially cleaved under the attack of ⋅OH, then some carboxylic acids were formed and eventually mineralized to CO 2 and H 2 O. Therefore, pulse electrochemical oxidation with a PTFE-Fe-PbO 2 electrode might be a promising alternative to enhance the practicability of electrochemical treatment for dye wastewater.

Model aqueous solutions of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA, 100 mg L−1) were electro-oxidized in a homemade container. The electrocatalytic behavior and anodic performance of Ti/SnO2–Sb/Yb–PbO2, Ti/SnO2–Sb–PbO2 and Ti/SnO2–Sb–Yb anodes in sodium electrolytes were compared. The SnO2–Sb/Yb–PbO2 anode demonstrated better electrocatalytic performance compared with the SnO2–Sb–PbO2 and SnO2–Sb–Yb electrodes in terms of both degradation and defluorination. Then a systematic experimental study was designed as follows to analyze the influencing factors: initial concentration of PFOA (10 mg L−1 to 200 mg L−1), current density (1 mA cm−2 to 40 mA cm−2), initial pH value (3 to 11) and electrode distance (5 mm to 20 mm). After a 150 min electrolysis, the optimum reaction conditions were obtained and the degradation and defluorination ratios reached 95.11 ± 3.9% and 75.7 ± 2.8%, respectively. Under the optimum conditions, the degradation of PFOA followed pseudo-first-order kinetics (0.0193 min−1) and the degradation half-life was 35.9 min. The produced F− was measured using a fluoride ion selective electrode, whereas the intermediate PFCAs with short-chain lengths were measured using HPLC-MS. A detailed degradation pathway was proposed in this study by analyzing the intermediates and the recovery of fluoride.

Antibiotic residues may be very harmful in aquatic environments, because of limited treatment efficiency of traditional treatment methods. An electrochemical system with a Ti-based SnO 2 –Sb–Ni anode was developed to degrade a typical antibiotic chloramphenicol (CAP) in water. The electrode was prepared using a sol–gel method. The performance of electrode materials, impact factors and dynamic characteristics were evaluated. The Ti-based SnO 2 –Sb–Ni electrode was compact and uniform as shown by characterization using SEM and XRD. The electrocatalytic oxidation of CAP was carried out in a single-chamber reactor by using a Ti-based SnO 2 –Sb–Ni electrode. For 100 mg L −1 CAP, the CAP removal ratio of 100% and the TOC removal ratio of 60% were obtained at the current density of 20 mA cm −2 and in a neutral electrolyte at 300 min. Kinetic investigation has shown that the electro-oxidation of CAP on a Ti-based SnO 2 –Sb–Ni electrode displayed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Free radical quenching experiments presented that the oxidation of CAP on Ti-based SnO 2 –Sb–Ni electrode resulted from the synergistic effect of direct oxidation and indirect oxidation (·OH and ·SO 4 − ). Doping Ni on the Ti/SnO 2 –Sb electrode for CAP degradation was presented in this paper, showing its great application potential in the area of antibiotic and halogenated organic pollutant degradation. Ti/SnO 2 –Sb–Ni anodes were first applied to remove CAP by electrocatalytic oxidation. The removal ratios of CAP and TOC by anodic oxidation and cathodic reduction were first compared. The degradation of CAP on the Ti/SnO 2 –Sb–Ni electrode results from the synergistic effect of direct oxidation and indirect oxidation (·OH and ·SO 4 − ). ·SO 4 − and direct oxidation contributed much to the degradation of CAP.

Ti/TiO 2 / SnO 2 -Sb-Ir/SnO 2 -Sb-Ni electrodes modified with three kinds of TiO 2 interlayer materials were fabricated. TiO 2 macroporous membrane (MAc) substrate was prepared by direct calcination, and TiO 2 nanotubes (NTs) and TiO 2 mesoporous membrane (MEs) substrate were fabricated by anodic oxidation under different conditions. The study shows that the TiO 2 -nanotube-based anode reduces crack morphology and provides a larger surface area for loading the electrochemically active materials. TiO 2 -NTs as the optimized interlayer improve the oxygen evolution potential (OEP) from 1.49 to 1.85 V and increase the current density of the oxidation peak from 0.28 to 0.55 mA cm −2 , which enhances the oxidative degradation ability of the electrode. In addition, the service life of the Ti/TiO 2 -NTs/SnO 2 -Sb-Ir/SnO 2 -Sb-Ni electrodes is 3.18 times longer than that of the Ti/SnO 2 -Sb-Ir/SnO 2 -Sb-Ni electrodes according to accelerated life tests. The degradation rate of methylene blue (MB) wastewater with an initial concentration of 20 mg L −1 reaches 99.14% under 5.0 V within 5 min by using Ti/TiO 2 -NTs/SnO 2 -Sb-Ir/SnO 2 -Sb-Ni electrodes, which is 1.67 times more than that of the Ti/SnO 2 -Sb-Ir/SnO 2 -Sb-Ni electrodes. The objective of this research is to develop an effective electrocatalytic filtration system using Ti/SnO 2 -Sb membrane anodes for eliminating Rhodamine B (RhB) from wasteater. Compared to Ti/SnO 2 -Sb plate anode, the prepared Ti/SnO 2 -Sb membrane anodes featured smaller particle size, bigger electrocatalytic active surface area, lower charge transfer resistance, and higher potential for oxygen evolution. The electrocatalytic filtration system obtained RhB removal of 90.29% with EE/O of 5.51 kWh m −3 after 90 min of electrolysis when initial pH value was 5, current density was 10 mA cm −2 , initial RhB concentration was 50 mg L −1 , and membrane flux was 2.17 m 3 (m 2 ·h) −1 , respectively. The flow-through electrocatalytic filtration system was found to be limited by kinetics under a high membrane flux and dominated by an indirect radical oxidation. Finally, the possible RhB degradation pathways were proposed based on the detected intermediates and density functional theory calculations.

Ti/SnO 2 -Sb electrodes are widely used in electrocatalysis due to their high oxygen evolution potential (OEP) and low cost, but their practical application is limited by the short service life. In this study, Ti/SnO 2 -Sb electrodes were modified by introducing Ta 2 O 5 nanopowder through a thermal decomposition method to form SnO 2 -Ta 2 O 5 heterojunctions. The structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of the electrodes with varying Ta 2 O 5 concentration were systematically investigated by XRD, XPS, FE-SEM, and electrochemical characterization techniques. Results show that Ta 2 O 5 incorporation induces lattice expansion, increases surface roughness, and improves the electrochemical active surface area by more than fourfold. The modified electrodes exhibit a significantly enhanced OEP of up to 2.20 V (vs. RHE), a threefold increase in double-layer capacitance, and a tenfold improvement (about 18 h) in accelerated service life under acidic conditions (100 mA/cm 2 ), compared to Ti/SnO 2 -Sb electrode. These findings demonstrate that Ta 2 O 5 doping effectively enhances catalytic activity, stability, and durability of Ti/SnO 2 -Sb electrodes, providing a promising strategy for the design of high-performance anodes for electrocatalytic applications.

A facile chemical vapor deposition strategy was developed to fabricate SnO 2 -Sb REM • The nanocrystalline structure of SnO 2 -Sb promoted the generation of ·OH effectively • The novel SnO 2 -Sb REM showed strong mineralization ability and low energy consumption • Extensive applicability and stability in actual wastewater treatment were achieved Developing a SnO 2 -Sb reactive electrochemical membrane (REM) with high efficiency and stability for water purification is of great significance for its practical industrial implementation. In this study, a stable and efficient SnO 2 -Sb REM with SnO 2 nanocrystalline catalytic layer was fabricated on TiO 2 -NTs substrates via a facile low-temperature chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, without the need for specialized fabrication equipment. Structural characterizations demonstrated that the prepared SnO 2 -Sb layer exhibits high-quality crystalline interfaces, with cube-shaped nanocrystals of approximately 10 nm in size. Furthermore, the catalytic performance of the REM was assessed by florfenicol (FLO), a broad-spectrum antibiotic, as the target pollutant. Compared with the REM fabricated via the traditional sol-gel method (denoted as TiO 2 -NTs/SnO 2 -Sb REM), the TiO 2 -NTs/SnO 2 -Sb-NC REM significantly enhanced hydroxyl radical (·OH) generation, leading to 14.7% improvement in FLO removal and 39% reduction in electric energy (EE/O). The FLO degradation performance was also affected by flow rate, current density, initial FLO concentration and pH. Moreover, its excellent applicability and long-term stability were verified by high pollutant removal efficiency in actual pharmaceutical and high-salinity wastewater. These results highlight the great potential of the TiO 2 -NTs/SnO 2 -Sb-NC REM for practical water treatment applications. Download: Download high-res image (214KB) Download: Download full-size image

Degradation of refractory organics has been limited by their low mass-transport rates in conventional flow-by operated electrochemical reactors. This study explores for the first time the development of porous titanium (Ti)-based metal oxide anodic membrane for efficient flow-through degradation of recalcitrant tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). For this purpose, a duplexed Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/PbO 2 -Ce anodic membrane was successfully prepared by sol-gel and electrodeposition methods. Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/PbO 2 -Ce exhibited improved mechanical and electrochemical stability, larger electrochemical surface area, higher oxygen evolution potential and lower charge transfer resistance, as compared to its mono-layered rival (Ti/SnO 2 -Sb). The switching from flow-by to flow-through operation resulted in an increased mass transfer rate constant and narrowed diffusion layer thickness of Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/PbO 2 -Ce. In the flow-through mode, Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/PbO 2 -Ce enabled the complete TBBPA removal at a relatively low electric energy (0.11 kWh m −3 ). The TBBPA removal was ascribed to the direct anodic oxidation and indirect anodic oxidation incurred by absorbed HO , free HO and 1 O 2 . The intermediate products, which were arisen from the attack of TBBPA by these reactive species, were identified. We further estimated their acute toxicities and bioaccumulation factors. This research proposed a robust electrochemical filtration approach for detoxification of TBBPA-contaminated water.

In this study, a novel Ti/TiO 2 Blue/SnO 2 -Sb@Ni-La (denoted as SnO 2 -Sb@Ni-La(H)) was successfully prepared by hydrothermal method . The fabricated SnO 2 -Sb@Ni-La(H) electrode exhibited the superior electrocatalytic properties: high oxygen evolution potential (2.34 V vs. SCE), low charge transfer resistance (73.4 Ω cm −2 ), and highest degradation efficiency of benzoic acid (BA) ( k BA = 0.112 min −1 ), compared with other electrodes. The degradation rate of BA on the SnO 2 -Sb@Ni-La(H) was 3.6-fold, 4.7-fold, and 7-fold higher than that of SnO 2 -Sb@Ni-La(T), Ti/TiO 2 Blue, and Ti/SnO 2 -Sb, respectively. The study showed that •OH was the main radical contributing to pollutants degradation and the first-order degradation rate of organic pollutants in electrochemical oxidation (EO) process depends on their reactivity towards •OH ( k •OH,OP ), except for the case of methyl orange (MeO). Among the proposed combination methods, the combination of adsorption and electrochemical oxidation (rGO + EO process) exhibited excellent performance: the first-order degradation rate of P-nitrosodimethylaniline ( k RNO ) in (rGO + EO) process increased by 1.42-fold, compared with the EO process alone. This can be explained by the synergy effect from adsorption of RNO on rGO and the degradation of RNO during the EO process. The hydrothermal deposition combined with thermal decomposition can significantly improve the physical and electrochemical oxidation properties of the Ti/TiO 2 Blue/SnO 2 -Sb@Ni-La electrode: k RNO increased by 3.5-fold, compared with that of 1-time deposition by hydrothermal deposition. In addition, the effect of some operating parameters was investigated, including pH, current density, cathode size and distance of electrodes. This study provided a new method to prepare high-performance Ti/TiO 2 Blue/SnO 2 -Sb@Ni-La electrode and proposed some methods to improve the removal efficiency of the pollutants.

With the wide application of reverse osmosis technology in municipal wastewater treatment, the abundance of generated reverse osmosis concentrates (ROC) has become a significant challenge for water ecosystems. In this work, a fabricated TiO 2 -BNTs/SnO 2 -Sb reactive electrochemical membrane (REM) was used to dispose of municipal ROC wastewater. The effects of the TiO 2 nanotube array (TiO 2 -BNTs) interlayer, current density, initial pH and flow rate on the COD removal of ROC were investigated. In addition, the 3D-EEM fluorescence spectra showed that humic acid-like substances and soluble microbial byproduct-like substances could be removed effectively. GC-MS analysis indicated that most organics, including aldehydes, phenols, ethers, nitriles, ketones, silanes and alcohols, were eliminated after treatment. The REM also exhibited prominent membrane anti-fouling performance in high-salinity wastewater. After 20 cycles, the transmembrane pressure (TMP) was only slightly changed (within 3 kPa) compared to that of the first cycle. Two key parameters, i.e., service lifetime and energy consumption, were investigated in ROC treatment. The service lifetime reached 31350 h (3.5 years, 20 mA cm −2 ) in 0.5 M NaCl solution and 40390 h (20 mA cm −2 , 4.6 years) in actual wastewater, which is highly competitive with previously reported electrodes. Energy consumption reached 10.5 kWh·kg COD −1 in actual ROC wastewater, which is more acceptable compared with current reported electrochemical technologies and exhibits great application prospects for TiO 2 -BNTs/SnO 2 -Sb REMs.

Inability to remove low-molecular-weight anthropogenic contaminants is a critical issue in low-pressure membrane filtration processes for water treatment. In this work, a novel electrochemical ceramic membrane filtration (ECMF) system using TiO2@SnO2–Sb anode was developed for removing persistent p-chloroaniline (PCA). Results showed that the ECMF system achieved efficient removal of PCA from contaminated waters. At a charging voltage of 3 V, the PCA removal rate of TiO2@SnO2–Sb ECMF system under flow-through mode was 2.4 times that of flow-by mode. The energy consumption for 50% of PCA removal for TiO2@SnO2–Sb ECMF at 3 V under flow-through mode was 0.38 Wh/L, much lower than that of flow-by operation (1.5 Wh/L), which was attributed to the improved utilization of the surface adsorbed HO· and dissociated HO· driven by the enhanced mass transfer of PCA toward the anode surface. Benefiting from the increased production of reactive oxygen species such as O2•–, H2O2, and HO· arising from excitation of anatase TiO2, TiO2@SnO2–Sb ECMF exhibited a superior electrocatalytic activity to the SnO2–Sb ECMF system. The degradation pathways of PCA initiated by OH· attack were further proposed, with the biodegradable short-chain carboxylic acids (mainly formic, acetic, and oxalic acids) identified as the dominant oxidized products. These results highlight the potential of the ECMF system for cost-effective water purification.
