A fluorescent probe comprising amino-modified zinc oxide quantum dots (NH 2 –ZQDs) with stable fluorescent properties was prepared using the sol–gel method. Based on the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and electrostatic adsorption (ESA) quenching effects of copper ions (Cu 2+ ) on the NH 2 –ZQDs and the mechanism of competitive binding of Cu 2+ and the NH 2 –ZQDs to L-methionine (L-Met), an NH 2 –ZQDs + Cu 2+ + L-Met fluorescence quenching–recovery sensing system was designed to efficiently exclude Fe 3+ interference. Thus, a novel “on-off-on” fluorescent probe was developed to specifically recognize Cu 2+ . The probe showed good linearity (y = 0.03102x − 0.1156, R 2 = 0.9953) over 5–25 μmol/L, with a limit of detection of 0.039 μmol/L. It exhibited good selectivity and was successfully applied to the quantitative determination of Cu 2+ in snail meat and tap water, with spiked recoveries in the range of 98.04 %–109.53 %.

Pesticides have been frequently detected in global freshwater ecosystems, but attempts to document changes in population dynamics of organisms upon exposure to pesticides, establish a causal relationship between exposure and population effects, and identify the key toxic events within individuals under natural field conditions remain rare. Here, we used a field survey, a reciprocal cross-transplant experiment, and a laboratory toxicity experiment to build a compelling case that exposure to the insecticide chlorpyrifos was responsible for differences in snail (Bellamya aeruginosa) densities in eastern (ELL) and western basins of Liangzi Lake in China. Our field survey and reciprocal cross-transplant experiment revealed significant differences in snail densities, juvenile percentage, survival, and relative telomere length (RTL) in the two basins. The insecticide chlorpyrifos detected in snail tissues was negatively correlated with snail densities, the percentage of juvenile snails, and RTL and had an extremely high risk quotient in ELL. In the laboratory experiment, tissue concentrations of chlorpyrifos detected in ELL were associated with reduced RTL and increased juvenile mortality in B. aeruginosa. These results support the hypothesis that chlorpyrifos exposure in ELL reduced the density of snails by reducing juvenile survival and, consequently, recruitment to the adult population.

Grape skin, a by-product of winemaking, is rich in dietary fiber but is often discarded, contributing to environmental waste. Dietary fiber, including soluble (SDF) and insoluble dietary fiber (IDF), the low content of SDF limits its potential applications. This study aimed to enhance the physicochemical, functional, and structural properties of grape skin dietary fiber through modification using a high-temperature cooking combination with snail enzyme. The modified SDF showed significant improvements, including increased water holding capacity (1.74 times), oil holding capacity (1.53 times), swelling capacity (1.13 times), and cation exchange capacity (1.33 times) compared to unmodified SDF. Additionally, modified SDF exhibited higher initial viscosity that decreased with increasing shear rate. Among all analyzed fibers, modified SDF had the highest total phenolic content (25.04 mg/g) and displayed the strongest antioxidant activity. Both modified SDF and IDF demonstrated enhanced functional properties, such as improved glucose adsorption, glucose dialysis retardation, α-amylase inhibition, lipase inhibition, and cholesterol adsorption capacity. Scanning electron microscopy results revealed a rougher and more porous surface structure after modification. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicated typical polysaccharide absorption peaks with no change in the main functional group types. X-ray diffraction analysis showed increased crystallinity in modified fibers, and thermal analysis confirmed improved thermal stability. Modified IDF also showed enhanced properties, including increased oil holding capacity, swelling capacity, improved enzyme inhibition activities compared to unmodified IDF. Overall, this study demonstrated that grape skin dietary fiber modified by high-temperature cooking combination assisted snail enzyme effectively enhances its properties, supporting its potential application in functional foods.

Tin oxide (SnO2) is widely used as an inorganic electron transport layer (ETL) for rigid and flexible perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, an extract of snail shell, the sodium salt of polyaspartic acid (S-PASP), a water-soluble polypeptide polymer, has been used to multifunctionally regulate SnO2 nanograins. S-PASP has a strong chelating and dispersing effect; thus, chemically adsorbed SnO2 can inhibit agglomeration. The S-PASP:SnO2 ETL also improved the extraction and transferability of carriers, reducing body defects and interfacial charge. Moreover, the S-PASP:SnO2 ETL promotes the vertical growth of the perovskite crystals due to its bottom-up morphology, wettability, and strain release, which is conducive to improving the photoelectric performance of the device. The optimized rigid device prepared under open-air conditions obtained a PCE of 20.92%. In addition, due to the stress compensation of the S-PASP long chain, which prevented the cracking and displacement of the ETL, the optimal PCE of the flexible device was 17.96%, and the initial efficiency was maintained at 82.8% after 100 bends. This work introduces a molecular doping mechanism for organic–inorganic hybrid electronics.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are among the most widely used engineered nanomaterials and may eventually accumulate in sediments. Limited information is currently available regarding the toxicity, bioaccumulation and distribution of sediment-associated AgNPs in aquatic organisms. In the present study, a freshwater snail Bellamya aeruginosa was exposed via sediment to commercial Ag particles of four nominal sizes: 20 nm (AgNPs-20), 40 nm (AgNPs-40), 80 nm (AgNPs-80), and < 10 μm (bulk Ag), and to silver nitrate at sub-lethal concentrations (1, 10 and 100 μg Ag/g sediment). Ag burden and biomarkers of oxidative stress were assessed in different tissues of B . aeruginosa : hepatopancreas, gonad, foot and digestive tracts. All five Ag types were available for uptake by B . aeruginosa when spiked into sediment, and Ag accumulation in different tissues presented the following pattern: hepatopancreas > gonad ≈ digestive tracts > foot. Snails accumulated higher levels of Ag from aqueous Ag than from particulate Ag. In contrast, AgNPs-40 and AgNPs-80 treatments occasionally induced higher oxidative stress than aqueous Ag, indicating the significant role of nanoparticle itself in exerting toxicity. Size-dependent toxicity of AgNPs in sediment was also found, with AgNPs-20 showing lower toxicity than other Ag particles. Overall, this study demonstrated that the toxicity of sediment-associated AgNPs to B . aeruginosa varies with size and differs from aqueous Ag.

Tubulointerstitial fibrosis (TIF) is the main pathologic feature of end-stage renal disease. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of proximal tubular cells (PTCs) is one of the most significant features of TIF. MicroRNAs play critical roles during EMT in TIF. However, whether miRNAs can be used as therapeutic targets in TIF therapy remains undetermined. We found that miR-30e, a member of the miR-30 family, is deregulated in TGF-β1-induced PTCs, TIF mice and human fibrotic kidney tissues. Moreover, transcription factors that induce EMT, such as snail, slug, and Zeb2, were direct targets of miR-30e. Using a cell-based miR-30e promoter luciferase reporter system, Schisandrin B (Sch B) was selected for the enhancement of miR-30e transcriptional activity. Our results indicate that Sch B can decrease the expression of snail, slug, and Zeb2, thereby attenuating the EMT of PTCs during TIF by upregulating miR-30e, both in vivo and in vitro. This study shows that miR-30e can serve as a therapeutic target in the treatment of patients with TIF and that Sch B may potentially be used in therapy against renal fibrosis

Nanoplastics pose significant threats to aquatic food webs, yet their impact on energy flow dynamics between brown-green food chains remains poorly understood. This study investigated how nano-polystyrene (nano-PS; 0, 1, 10, and 100 μg·L −1 ) affected the nutritional quality of leaf litter ( Populus nigra ) and benthic algae ( Spirogyra sp.), and further influenced the feeding preference of the river snail ( Cipangopaludina cathayensis ) through a 21-day microcosm experiment. Results revealed that nano-PS induced concentration- and time-dependent changes in the basal resources. Notably, exposure to 10 μg·L −1 of nano-PS temporarily increased the quality of leaf litter by enhancing extracellular enzyme activities on day 7. However, exposure to 100 μg·L −1 resulted in a significant decline in nutritional quality and a 53.59% increase in fungal biomass. Benthic algae exhibited an acute compensatory response under nano-PS stress but experienced chronic reductions in both biomass and nutritional quality. Furthermore, exposure to nano-PS caused oxidative stress in C. cathayensis , leading to trade-offs in energy allocation between antioxidant defense and foraging behavior. As a result, the river snail shifted its feeding preference from algae to leaf litter on day 7, but reversed this trend by day 21. Principal component analysis confirmed that the quality of available resources and the physiological status of the river snail together influenced these preference adjustments. Results demonstrated that nanoplastics disrupt energy flow in brown-green food chains by altering resource characteristics and detritivore behavior, providing crucial insights into the ecological risks posed by nanoplastics in stream ecosystems.

White jade snail (a bred albino variant of Achatina fulica ) is widely used in China as an edible and medicinal resource. Previous studies have reported the overall structural characteristics of its glycosaminoglycan (GAG) at the polymer level; however, precise oligosaccharide evidence and structure-function relevance have remained insufficient. In this study, the heparan-like GAG from farmed white jade snails (AfH) was structurally elucidated using a bottom-up strategy based on well-defined oligosaccharides generated by β-eliminative and deaminative depolymerization, revealing a highly regular repeating unit -[4-D-GlcNAc-α1,4-L-IdoA 2S -α1,]-. Notably, alkaline processing was demonstrated to induce artificial structural alterations, including 2-O-desulfation of IdoA 2S , conversion of IdoA to GalA, and epimerization of GlcNAc to ManNAc. AfH exhibited potent heparanase inhibitory activity while showing negligible anticoagulant and P-selectin inhibition, with activity positively correlated with molecular weight and sulfate content. Structural variations showed distinct biological impacts, ManNAc introduction in a tetrasaccharide (Tetra-2) enhanced heparanase inhibition. Functionally, AfH significantly suppressed 4T1 cell migration and invasion and reduced pulmonary metastasis in mice. This work establishes AfH as a natural resource abundant, well-defined, non-anticoagulant heparan-like GAG with strong anti-metastatic potential, while highlighting alkaline processing as a critical determinant of GAG structural integrity and bioactivity.

In this paper, the regulatory effect of combining the enzymolysis of snailase and β-glucanase on the flavor release of Lentinula edodes powder was analyzed. The flavor attributes and differences of volatiles before and after enzymatic hydrolysis were evaluated using gas chromatograph-ion mobility spectrometry, electronic nose, and quantitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that a total of 70 volatile compounds were identified, the flavor contributions of nitrogen oxides, sulfides, and aromatic compounds in L. edodes were significantly enhanced after enzymatic hydrolysis. The enzymatically treated L. edodes received the highest scores in fruity flavor and sour flavor. After enzymatic hydrolysis of shiitake, 2-methyl butanal (bitter almond note) and 1-octen-3-one (grassy note) showed a significant decrease in flavor contribution, while the flavor contribution of β-caryophyllene and acetic acid, associated with sweet and sour flavor, significantly increases. Principal component analysis revealed that the flavor profile of shiitake powder was significantly reconstructed after enzymatic treatment

p -Aminophenol (PAP) is an important intermediate in the synthesis and environmental degradation of acetaminophen, and it is widely found in pharmaceutical and dyeing wastewater. However, systematic studies on its toxicity to freshwater invertebrates remain limited. In this study, Biomphalaria glabrata was used as a model organism to comprehensively evaluate the acute and chronic toxicity of PAP across three developmental stages (embryo, juvenile, and adult stages) and to identify key target organs of damage through histopathological analysis. Acute toxicity tests revealed a clear stage-dependent sensitivity gradient, with embryos being the most sensitive (216 h LC 50 = 4.16 mg/L, 95% CI = 3.94 to 4.39 mg/L), followed by juveniles (96 h LC 50 = 10.87 mg/L, 95% CI = 9.38 to 12.36 mg/L) and adults (96 h LC 50 = 26.41 mg/L, 95% CI = 22.78 to 29.58 mg/L). During a 21-day chronic exposure, PAP at concentrations of 9-13 mg/L significantly inhibited adult growth and reproduction, with egg-laying nearly completely suppressed at concentrations ≥11 mg/L. Histopathological observations revealed hepatopancreatic acinar dilation, vacuolation, and necrosis, as well as gonadal follicle atrophy and germ cell degeneration, indicating direct damage to the metabolic and reproductive systems. This study integrates multiple lines of evidence linking “developmental sensitivity, functional impairment, and organ pathology,” suggesting that PAP may pose potential risks to mollusk populations under high or pulse exposure scenarios.

Sesquiterpene lactones (SL) have a wide range of applications in anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory therapy. However, the pharmacological mechanism of such substances is not clear. In this study, parthenolide (PTL) was used as an example to explore the anti-tumor effect of natural molecules and their common mechanism. We showed that PTL inhibited the proliferation and migration by reverse EMT via the ERK2/NF-κB/Snail pathway in vivo and in vitro . Interestingly, Multiple potential targets of PTL contain a Gly-Leu-Ser/Lys-“co-adaptation pocket”. This inspiring us analogies of PTL may also bind to these target proteins and play a similar function. Significantly, the Concept of co-adaptation pocket may help to increase the selectivity of drug research and development.

In this study, a chitosan-based, self-assembled nanosystem that codelivered microRNA34a (miR34a) and doxorubicin (Dox) with hyaluronic acid (HA) modification (named CCmDH NPs) was developed to reverse the resistance of breast cancer (BCa) cells to Dox. The CCmDH NPs had a diameter of 180 ± 8.3 nm and a ζ potential of 16.5 mV with a slow-release effect for 96 h. The codelivery system could protect miR34a from nuclease and serum degradation and transport miR34a and Dox into drug-resistant MCF-7/A cells. In addition, the CCmDH NPs could inhibit proliferation and promote apoptosis by regulating the protein expression of B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) and inhibit invasion, metastasis, and adhesion by regulating E-cadherin, N-cadherin, MMP2, CD44, and Snail molecules. The CCmDH NPs induced a 73.7% tumor reduction in xenograft tumor growth in nude mice in vivo. This study provides evidence for the anticancer activity of CCmDH NPs carrying Dox and miR34a in BCa, especially metastatic Dox-resistant BCa models.
