An Electrochemical Sensor for Sunset Yellow Detection Based on Cu@Cu2O-BNPC Formed by Modified Porous Carbon

Feiyu Yang,Jiamin Wang,Kailiang Yin,Huan Pang

Control and detection of sunset yellow (SY) are an utmost demanding issue due to its high risk of detrimental effects on living systems caused by excessive ingestion. In this study, we reported the synthesis of Cu@Cu2O nanoparticle-decorated B and N codoped porous carbon (BNPC) and its use in developing a novel electrochemical sensor for SY. The Cu@Cu2O-BNPC catalyst was fabricated through single-step polymerization, followed by carbonization. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization results showed that Cu@Cu2O anchored on the porous BNPC successfully. Compared with the BNPC-modified electrode, it was found that the Cu@Cu2O-BNPC-modified electrode showed superior electrocatalytic activity in both electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry tests. The as-prepared Cu@Cu2O-BNPC catalyst directly acted as a sensor for amperometric detection of SY without further assembling, which exhibited an ultrahigh sensitivity of 0.09 μA nM–1 cm–2, a low limit of detection (2.4 nM), and a wide linear detection ranging from 10 nM to 8 μM. To further validate its possible application, the proposed method was successfully used for the determination of SY in Fanta drinks with satisfactory results.

High Content Analysis technology for evaluating the joint toxicity of sunset yellow and sodium sulfite in vitro

Daofeng Qu,Yanpei Gu,Lifang Feng,Jianzhong Han

Foods contain various additives that affect our daily lives. At present, food additive safety evaluation standards are based on the toxicity of single additives, but food additives are often used in combination and may have additive, synergistic or antagonistic actions. The current study investigated the toxicity of food additives and mechanisms of damage in HepG2 cells using High Content Analysis (HCA). We used the CCK-8 assay to determine cell viability, providing an experimental basis for determining the safety of food additives. All of the food additives tested were observed to decrease the growth of HepG2 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Sunset yellow and sodium sulfite had IC50 values of 1.06, and 0.30   g/L at 24   h, respectively. HCA showed that both sunset yellow and sodium sulfite had synergistic effects on cell number, membrane permeability, mitochondrial membrane potential, intracellular calcium level, oxidative stress, and high dose group DNA damage.

Highly sensitive and selective sensor for sunset yellow based on molecularly imprinted polydopamine-coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes

Zheng-Zhi Yin,Shu-Wen Cheng,Li-Bin Xu,Hong-Ying Liu,Kai Huang,Lei Li,Yun-Yun Zhai,Yan-Bo Zeng,Hai-Qing Liu,Yong Shao,Zu-Lei Zhang,Yi-Xia Lu

Polydopamine (PDA) can be formed by monomeric self-polymerization in water. This convenient behavior was exploited to prepare a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) layer on the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with sunset yellow (SY) as a template molecule. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized, and their electrochemical behavior towards SY was investigated. Under the optimized conditions, a glassy carbon electrode modified with the imprinted nanocomposite showed a highly selective and ultrasensitive electrochemical response to SY compared with the performance of control electrodes and previously reported electrochemical sensors for SY. The improved behavior of the developed sensor can be attributed to its superficial highly matched imprinted cavities on the excellent electrocatalytic matrix of MWCNTs and the electronic barrier of the non-imprinted PDA to outside molecules. The fabricated sensor expressed a linear relationship to SY concentrations from 2.2   nM to 4.64   μM with a detection limit of 1.4   nM (S/N = 3). The sensor also exhibited excellent selectivity for SY over its structural analogs, good stability, and adequate reproducibility. The prepared sensor was successfully used to detect SY in real spiked samples. This methodology has potential application value and may be readily adapted to design other PDA-based MIP sensors.

Rational design of ultrahigh sensitive sunset yellow sensor based on 3D hierarchical porous graphitic carbon with sub-nanopores

Yajun Gao,Tingting Li,Tianyuan Zhang,Meiling Wang,Lu Gao,Zhenquan Yang,Zhanjun Yang

The content of sunset yellow (SY) in food must be strictly controlled, because its excessive intake may cause many adverse health effects. Herein, we proposed an ultrasensitive SY sensor by using hierarchical porous graphitic (HPG) carbon derived from polyaniline hydrogel. After a first step of polymerization, the HPG carbon was prepared through carbonization and further chemical activation. In particular, the activation process endowed the HPG carbon with a high content of optimized porous architecture (sub-nanoporous surface area accounts for more than 90% of microporous surface area), and thus providing a structural basis for high efficiency of SY pre-concentration on HPG carbon surface. Therefore, the proposed sensor showed record-high sensitivity (5285.7 A M −1 cm −2 ) and ultra-low detection limit (0.15 nM), which represents a performance improvement in SY sensing. Furthermore, the sensor displays excellent selectivity, reproducibility and stability, exhibiting a great perspective in ultrasensitive monitoring of SY in commercial products.

A comparison of PMT-based and CCD-based sensors for electrochemiluminescence detection of sunset yellow in soft drinks

Gen Liu,Yun Wu,Feifei Chen,Congying Shao,Yunhuan Cheng,Hui Gao

The use of artificial colorants in food is highly regulated due to their potential to harm human health. Thus, it is crucial to detect these substances effectively to ensure conformance with industrial standards. In this work, we prepared a photomultiplier tube (PMT)-based electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor and a charged coupled device (CCD)-based ECL sensor and compared their merits in the detection of sunset yellow (SY) dye. The sensors used C,N quantum dot-embedded g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (QDs@NSs) as the ECL agent and K 2 S 2 O 8 as the coreactant. SY was analyzed on the basis of amplification in the QDs@NHs-K 2 S 2 O 8 ECL system. The PMT-based sensor realized ultrasensitive detection using a single electrode, especially at low concentrations of SY. A CCD-based sensor imaged the ECL phenomenon of an electrode array and provided the advantages of high throughput and time savings. Under optimized conditions, both sensors exhibited high specificity, reproducibility and stability; detection limits of 20 nM with PMT detection and 5 μM with CCD detection were determined for SY, with detection ranging over at least two decades. The practical feasibilities of these systems were confirmed by satisfactory detection of SY in real drink samples.

Wenting Tong,Zhichao Ma,Shulin Zhang,Apei Jiang,Ming Wei,Jianhua Jia,Wenbo Lu

The quantitative detection of food additives containing sunset yellow is of great significance to food safety. In this study, a simple, low-cost, and sustainable pencil graphite electrode modified with Co3O4@biochar is proposed for the accurate detection of sunset yellow in beverages. Absorbent cotton is selected as the biological carbon source, which is immersed in cobalt salt and then pyrolyzed in air to achieve the preparation of nanocomposite Co3O4@biochar (Co3O4@BC-700). The successful synthesis of Co3O4@BC-700 is confirmed by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS and BET. It is gratifying that the Co3O4@BC-700 modified pencil graphite electrode enables the electrochemical quantitative detection of sunset yellow with a linear range of 5.0 × 10−6–4.0 × 10−3 M, a detection limit as low as 1.3 × 10−6 M, and a cost as low as 0.5 Yuan per electrode. It also has excellent selectivity, stability and repeatability. This electrochemical sensor based on Co3O4@biochar can be employed for the concentration detection of sunset yellow in beverages. This work attempts to provide a novel path for the electrochemical detection of food additives.

Preparation of γ-alumina nanoparticle modified polyacrylamide composite and study on its solid phase extraction of Sunset Yellow

Li Wanjun,Jia Qiong,Zhang Zhenyu,Wang Yuanpeng

An organic-inorganic composite, γ -alumina nanoparticle modified polyacrylamide, was synthesized in this study. The composite was characterized by scanning electron microscope, nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurement, thermal gravimetric analyzer, differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier-transformed infrared spectrometer. A novel solid-phase extraction method with the synthesized composite as the adsorbent was developed for the enrichment of Sunset Yellow coupled with ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. To obtain the optimum extraction efficiency, the experimental parameters in the processes of preparation of the adsorbent and solid-phase extraction were studied including synthesis temperature, synthesis time, the dosage of γ -alumina nanoparticles, sample flow rate, sample pH, eluant concentration, and eluant flow rate. Under the optimum conditions, the detection limit of the developed method was calculated to be 0.037 μg mL −1 with intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviation values of 2.57% and 3.89%, respectively. When the method was applied to the determination of Sunset Yellow in beverages, satisfactory recoveries were obtained in the range of 92.3–109.8%.

Xiu Qin,Dongling Meng,Yun Zhou,Xueqin Xu,Binglin Lu,Yuling Pan,Zhiyan Chen

We developed a green one-step method using broccoli pedicels to synthesize carbon quantum dots (CQDs) for selective sensing of Sunset Yellow. The analyte quenched the fluorescence of CQDs through its inner filter effect. A straightforward and reliable fluorescence quenching method using CQDs as probes in monitoring Sunset Yellow was established. The approach showed linearity from 0.1 to 50 µM with a 0.08 µM detection limit and performed well in real samples. This fluorescence-based method holds potential for further investigation and widespread adoption in the food industry.

Synthesis of Bio-Base Fluorescence Carbon Dots for Selective Detection of Tartrazine and Sunset Yellow in Food Samples

Zhu RongGui,Jin Lei,Yang Bing,Ma Yuan,Zhou You,Xiao RongDan,Meng YiJie,Hou Ye,Xie BenTing,Jiang Xiu Juan

A green, economical and simple method for the preparation of water-soluble, high-fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) has been developed via hydrothermal process using pomelo peels as carbon source. The synthesized CQDs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV − vis absorption spectra and fluorescence spectrophotometer. The results reveal that the as-prepared C-dots were spherical shape with an average diameter of 2.64 nm and emit bright blue photoluminescence (PL) with a quantum yield of approximately 3.63%. The surface of the C-dots was rich in hydroxyl groups and presented various merits including excellent photostability, low toxicity, and satisfactory solubility. Additionally, we found that two widely used synthetic food colorants, tartrazine and sunset yellow, could result in a strong fluorescence quenching of the C-dots, The possible mechanisms are caused by different ratios of inner filter and static quenching effects. According to this property, This study attempts to establish an analytical method for the determination of tartrazine and sunset yellow using carbon quantum dots as fluorescent probe. A linear relationship was found in the range of 0-100 µM tartrazine and sunset yellow with the detection limit(3σ/k) of 0.65 nM and 1.7 nM. The relative standard deviation (RSD) was 3.5% (tartrazine) and 3.0% (sunset yellow). This observation was further successfully applied for the determination of tartrazine and sunset yellow in food samples collected from local markets, and the recovery rates of the two ranges from 79% to 117.8 and 81 -103.5%, respectively. suggesting its great potential toward food routine analysis.

Li Chunxiang,Xia Sushuang,Qian Xinmei,Zheng Mingyu,Deng Keqin

Electrocatalyst with high accumulation capacity and efficient electrocatalysis are crucial for constructing electrochemical sensors. In this study, 3D hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets decorated by Fe 3 O 4 /CoFe nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 /CoFe@N-CSs) were successfully prepared. The morphology, composition, microstructure, and property were investigated by SEM, HRTEM, XRD, XPS, and cyclic voltammetry. The synthesized Fe 3 O 4 /CoFe@N-CSs were assembled by two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets to form flower-like layered structure. It displayed a large amount of pore space for promoting the accumulation of targets and brilliant electrocatalysis towards the electrochemical oxidation of sunset yellow (SY) and tartrazine (TTZ). Using Fe 3 O 4 /CoFe@N-CSs to modify screen-printed electrode (SPE), a disposable electrochemical sensor (Fe 3 O 4 /CoFe@N-CSs/SPE) was constructed for the analysis of SY and TTZ. It showed the detection range of 0.008–5.0 μM and 0.02–10.0 μM with the detection limit of 2.0 nM and 4.0 nM, respectively. The practical applicability of the sensor in real drink samples provided satisfactory data. The results indicated that Fe 3 O 4 /CoFe@N-CSs was a promising nanomaterial, contributing great potential for individual and synchronous measurement of trace amounts of SY and TTZ in food samples.

Jingru Huang,Haiyan Zhao,Na Li,Min Cui,Cong Zhang

Sunset yellow(SY) is a synthetic azo food dye, which is extensively utilized in the food processing industry. Nevertheless, its potential detrimental impacts on human health necessitate meticulous consideration. Consequently, the development of a user-friendly and rapidly responsive assay for the monitoring and analysis of SY in food products is of utmost importance. This study introduces an innovative electrochemical sensor based on polyoxometalates decorated with polypyrrole and multi-walled carbon nanotubes [Co 4 (PW 9 O 34 ) 2 @PPy-MWCNTs] for SY detection. The Co 4 (PW 9 O 34 ) 2 composite was prepared by using the nitrogen-containing ligand (1,4-bis (1-imidazolyl) butane) and the conductive polypyrrole was coated on Co 4 (PW 9 O 34 ) 2 , which avoided the solution of polyoxometalates in the electrolyte and improved the electrochemical stability. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes was employed to further enhance electron transfer rate. Research has shown that Co 4 (PW 9 O 34 ) 2 @PPy-MWCNTs exhibits superior electron transfer rates and remarkable electrocatalytic activity, which significantly amplify the oxidation signal of SY. Under optimal experimental conditions, the established detection range for SY is 10–1150 μM, with a detection limit of 0.425 μM. Additionally, the Co 4 (PW 9 O 34 ) 2 @PPy-MWCNTs modified electrode has good anti-interference and stability. The Co 4 (PW 9 O 34 ) 2 @PPy-MWCNTs modified electrode was successfully applied to detect SY in Fanta with yielding recovery rates between 97.79 % and 101.48 %, demonstrating substantial application potential as an effective means for SY detection.

Construction of novel electrochemical sensors based on bimetallic nanoparticle functionalized graphene for determination of sunset yellow in soft drink

Lanqing Li,Huijun Zheng,Lili Guo,Lingbo Qu,Lanlan Yu

Three novel electrochemical sensors constructed by Pd-Pt bimetallic nanocages, Pt-Cu bimetallic nanoframes and Co-Ni bimetallic nanoflowers and poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA)-dispersed graphene (Gr) were applied to determine sunset yellow (SY, E110). The PDDA-Gr-(Pd-Pt), PDDA-Gr-(Pt-Cu) and PDDA-Gr-(Co-Ni) nanocomposites formed different nanostructure with unique features and were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The special morphology of the three bimetallic nanoparticles endows the designed electrochemical sensors with large active areas and good electrical conductivity, which provides more active sites for the target analyte and improves the sensitivity of the determination of sunset yellow. The developed sensors were investigated and compared with each other on the determination of SY by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Under optimal experimental condition, the anodic peak currents of sunset yellow on three modified electrodes was linearly correlated with the concentration of sunset yellow in the ranges of 0.02–10.0, 0.02–10.0, 0.008–10.0   μM, respectively. The limits of detection (LOD) of SY were 6.0, 4.0 and 2.0   nM, respectively. In addition, the three new proposed sensors in this study were successfully applied to determine SY in real soft drink sample. This study provides a new platform for designing sensitive electrochemical sensor based on non-noble metals with low cost.
