High-quality perovskite films with low imperfections, high hole mobility, and matching energy levels play a crucial role in enhancing performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) without hole-transporting materials (HTMs). Herein, it is demonstrated that the incorporation of a stable tetra-bisphenol A (TBBPA) with diphenyl ring, polybromides, and hydroxyl groups additive into a perovskite film can simultaneously manipulate the crystal growth and passivate the defects through coordination interaction between the functional group ( OH, Br) and the unsaturated halogen and metal ions (Br − , Cs + , and Pb 2+ ), resulting in a reduced grain boundary as well as imperfection and increased hole mobility of the CsPbBr 3 perovskite film. In addition, the valence band of a perovskite film with TBBPA additive is shifted upward to approach the work function of the carbon electrode, thereby improving the energy level alignment. Consequently, a significantly boosted charge extraction and reduced charge recombination of the carbon-based HTM-free CsPbBr 3 PSCs is obtained after incorporating the TBBPA additive, yielding a maximum power conversion efficiency of up to 9.82% of the optimized device. Furthermore, the champion PSC without encapsulation displays a remarkable thermal and moisture stability after being kept in ambient air for 720 h at 85 °C and 85% relative humidity, respectively.

Metagenomic binning recovers 45 high-quality MAGs from TBBPA-degrading consortia. • Burkholderia and Klebsiella dominate aerobic and anaerobic TBBPA-transforming communities. • NCHT closely matches MAG HY4.102 and transforms TBBPA under both oxygen conditions. • A debromination-dominated network involving debromination, hydroxylation, and β-scission is proposed from 17 intermediates. Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), a widely used brominated flame retardant, poses increasing environmental and health concerns, yet how oxygen availability is associated with the assembly and degradation potential of TBBPA-transforming microbiomes remains poorly resolved. Here, ten enrichment consortia (six aerobic and four anaerobic) were established from activated sludge collected at six municipal wastewater treatment plants, achieving up to 63.46% TBBPA removal at an initial concentration of 5 mg/L. Metagenomic analysis revealed marked community divergence between the aerobic and anaerobic enrichment conditions, with Burkholderia predominating in the aerobic consortia and Klebsiella predominating in the anaerobic consortia. Read-mapping-based abundance profiling detected the HY4.102-affiliated Klebsiella pneumoniae population under both oxygen conditions, with higher relative abundance in the anaerobic consortia. Strain NCHT, isolated from the aerobic consortium NC_H, shared >99% ANI and AAI with HY4.102 and transformed TBBPA under both aerobic and anaerobic batch conditions. During aerobic incubation, strain NCHT transformed 51.0–68.4% of TBBPA across the tested concentrations, and UHPLC-MS/MS analysis yielded 17 putatively identified transformation intermediates consistent with an interconnected network involving debromination, hydroxylation, O-methylation, and β-scission. Molecular docking further prioritized DhmA, GSTs, CbdA/B, and PobB as candidate enzymes for debromination and downstream aromatic transformation, broadly consistent with the dehalogenation-related genes annotated in MAG HY4.102. Together, these findings provide an integrated community-to-strain framework for investigating TBBPA transformation. Download: Download high-res image (396KB) Download: Download full-size image

The potential risks of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) like tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) have attracted much attention. However, the influence of TBBPA on functional microbes remains poorly understood, especially with regards to denitrification, which is closely related with the carbon and nitrogen cycles , eutrophication and greenhouse gas emission . Herein, we found that 1.0 mg/L of TBBPA significantly decreased the total nitrogen removal efficiency by 81.7%, but increased the accumulation of NO 2 − –N (by 81.5%) and N 2 O (by 172-fold). This was found to be underlie by the significant decrease in both the denitrifying capability of denitrifiers and total bacterial population. Further investigation revealed that TBBPA inhibited the pathways of glucolysis and pentose phosphate, and promoted glyoxylate bypass via regulating genes expressions of key enzymes (such as glucose-6-phosphate isomerase, pyruvate dehydrogenase , isocitrate lyase, etc.), then decreased the generation of NADH serving as electron donor for denitrification, and inhibited the denitrifying capability of denitrifiers. Moreover, insufficient NADH stimulated the accumulation of denitrifying intermediates (NO 2 − –N and N 2 O), which induced the increase of reactive nitrogen species (RNS), whose accumulation decreased proliferation and increased apoptosis of denitrifying bacteria. Finally, the decrease in the denitrifying capability of denitrifier and bacterial population resulted in negative denitrifying performance.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) was a potential persistent organic pollutants. This study synthesized s-Fe/Cu bimetallic particles by decorated sponge iron (s-Fe) with Copper (Cu) to degrade TBBPA. S-Fe/Cu bimetallic particles was further characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM and EDS. The optimal TBBPA removal efficiency was 95.9%. Among the theoretical Cu mass loading increasing from 0 wt% to 6 wt%, 4 wt% mass loading was the best; with TBBPA initial concentration increased from 5 mg/L to 30 mg/L, TBBPA removal efficiency decreased from 91.2% to 73.0%; also, when dosage increased from 10 g/L to 30 g/L, removal efficiency increased from 58.1% to 95.9%; pH 6.5 were beneficial to degrading TBBPA and the s-Fe/Cu bimetallic particles showed strong catalytic ability after 4 reuse cycle. Kinetic analysis showed that the degradation of TBBPA obeyed pseudo-first-order kinetics. In addition, Liquid Chromatography Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (LC/TOF/MS) detected degradation products including debromination products, hydroxylation products, single aromatic ring products and O -methylating product, which demonstrated that the main degradation pathway were debromination, hydroxyl, β -scission and O -methylation reactions.

Microplastics (MPs, < 5 mm) serve as critical vectors for hydrophobic pollutants, yet their role in transporting brominated flame retardants remains poorly understood. This study systematically investigated the adsorption of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), a pervasive brominated contaminant, onto polyethylene microplastics (PEMPs) under environmentally relevant conditions. Key findings revealed that TBBPA adsorption was maximized at a low PEMPs dosage (0.2 g/L), neutral pH (7.5), and 283 K, with equilibrium capacities of 1.32, 0.98, and 0.69 mg/g for 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 g/L PEMPs, respectively. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed a spontaneous and exothermic (ΔG < 0, ΔH < 0) adsorption process dominated by physical interactions. Aging treatments (UV irradiation) significantly enhanced adsorption capacity (1.79-fold increase) by generating surface cracks and oxygen-containing groups, which elevated the specific surface area from 0.386 to 0.404 m 2 /g. Mass transfer mechanisms involved both film diffusion (Boyd model) and intra-particle diffusion, with the latter being rate-limiting. Notably, high ionic strength in simulated seawater (Na⁺, Ca 2 ⁺ competition) and fulvic acid in freshwater reduced TBBPA adsorption by 55% and 70%, respectively. These disparities imply that PEMPs migrating from rivers to oceans may continuously accumulate TBBPA, amplifying ecological risks through long-range transport and localized contaminant release. Our findings underscore the necessity to regulate TBBPA-laden plastic waste and reevaluate microplastic-mediated contaminant fluxes in aquatic systems. Graphical

To improve the efficacy of organic pollutant removal using sulfate radicals, we designed MIP@C-Fe-Nx, a molecularly imprinted material capable of targeting the degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), which can be used as both adsorbent and catalyst to recognize and degrade Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) accurately, and the final removal rate of TBBPA can reach 104.6 mg·g −1 . Based on the synergistic effects of MIP@C-Fe-Nx on the excellent organic pollutant recognition and catalytic performance, low concentrations of TBBPA can be pre-targeted, concentrated, and fixed on the surface of MIP, and degraded simultaneously in-situ by·OH and SO 4 •- which are produced by activating PS with C-Fe-Nx. Recognition experiments demonstrated that MIPs had perfect performance in recognizing and adsorbing TBBPA and debromination intermediates. The DFT calculations and HPLC-MS analysis indicated that MIP@C-Fe-Nx had a targeted recognition and accumulation for TBBPA and debromination intermediates, for example, dibromobisphenol A, monobromobisphenol A, and bisphenol A, thus avoid the formation of toxic intermediates causing secondary contamination.

The presence of microplastics (MPs) and the associated organic pollutants in the aquatic environment has attracted growing concern in recent years. MPs could compete with chemicals for adsorption sites on the surface of sediment, affecting the sorption processes of pollutants on sediment. However, few studies focused on the binary system of microplastics-sediment (MPs-S), which appear much common in aquatic environment. Herein, we investigated the interactions between a continuously used flame retardant tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and four MPs-S complexes (PVC–S, PE-S, PP-S and PS-S). The equilibrium adsorption capacities were 17.1, 15.6, 15.4, and 14.0 mg/kg for PVC-S, PS-S, PE-S, and PP-S, respectively. Kinetics suggest that adsorption behavior of TBBPA was fitted by pseudo-second-order model. Co-adsorption of TBBPA in binary systems were much lower than the sum of each simple system, which may be due to the mutually occupied adsorption sites. Higher ionic strength and lower dissolved organic matter strengthened the sorption of TBBPA onto MPs-S complexes. The enhanced sorption capacities for TBBPA were observed with elevated proportion and small particle size of MPs in the MPs-S complexes. This study contributes to the knowledge on the impact of MPs in partitioning of organic pollutants in-between solid and aqueous phases in the aquatic environment.

TBBPA, a ubiquitously distributed brominated flame retardant, poses significant ecological risks due to its bioaccumulative potential and toxicity. Previous investigations have predominantly focused on untargeted metabolomics and lipidomics to characterize the effects of TBBPA on metabolic end products. However, limited data are available regarding the mechanisms underlying TBBPA-induced disruption of lipid metabolism in aquatic organisms. This study systematically investigated the dose-dependent effects of TBBPA on lipid metabolism in common carp through integrated biochemical, histochemical evaluations, and transcriptomic profiling. Fish were exposed to environmentally relevant TBBPA concentrations (0, 0.005, 0.05, and 0.5 mg/L) for a 14-day duration. Serum biochemical analyses revealed dose-dependent hyperlipidemia, manifested by elevated TG and T-CHO levels, suppressed SOD and CAT activities, and increased MDA levels. Oil Red O staining demonstrated hepatic lipid droplet accumulation despite no significant ( P > 0.05) alterations in intrahepatic TG/T-CHO content, with the 0.5 mg/L group exhibited the most severe histopathological phenotype. Transcriptomic profiling identified the AMPK and PPAR signaling pathways as pivotal regulators of TBBPA-induced metabolic dysregulation. Under low-dose TBBPA exposure (0.05 mg/L), lipid accumulation triggered compensatory activation of the AMPK / PPAR-α / CPT1 axis, enhancing fatty acid β-oxidation to partially counteract lipid deposition. Conversely, high-dose TBBPA (0.5 mg/L) disrupted lipid metabolism through coordinated upregulation of genes associated with lipid synthesis, transport, and storage, culminating in pathological lipid deposition. This study provides critical insights into the molecular cascades underlying TBBPA-induced metabolic dysregulation in aquatic species, highlights the dose-dependent disruption of lipid homeostasis.

The pervasive contamination of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) presents a critical environmental challenge due to its persistence and resistance to conventional degradation. Although sulfidized nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) represents a promising remediation avenue, its efficacy is severely constrained by particle agglomeration and insufficient mineralization capabilities. Here, we report a self-dissociation-assembly strategy to engineer a robust S-nZVI composite supported on Mg Al layered double oxides (S-nZVI@LDO) for the substantial removal of TBBPA. By modulating the precursor synthesis pathways, we demonstrate that the hydrothermal-derived LDO support (α-phase) creates a unique nanosheet architecture that facilitates superior dispersion of reactive Fe/S species compared to chemically precipitated counterparts. The optimized S-nZVI@LDO α composite achieves >95% TBBPA removal efficiency, with a debromination efficiency of 71% and a mineralization rate of 51%, significantly outperforming traditional composites. Mechanistic investigations reveal a synergistic pathway involving rapid electrostatic adsorption, reductive debromination driven by surface-bound Fe 0 , and oxidative mineralization via in-situ generated radicals. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibits improved stability and reusability over multiple cycles. This work elucidates the critical role of precursor structural evolution in catalyst design and provides a scalable, high-efficiency solution for the remediation of halogenated organic pollutants.

A stable XG-WAS@n-FeS slurry was constructed for simultaneous removal of Cr(VI) and TBBPA. • Xanthan gum enhanced slurry viscosity, stability, and oxidation resistance. • TBBPA was transformed through successive debromination reactions. • Coexisting contaminants influenced TBBPA removal through site competition. Nanoscale ferrous sulfide (n-FeS) is a promising reductant for water treatment, but rapid oxidation, particle aggregation, and poor transportability restrict its practical use. In this study, n-FeS was immobilized on alkali-modified waste activated sludge (WAS), and xanthan gum (XG) was added as a structural regulator. This approach produced a stable, shear-thinning XG-WAS@n-FeS slurry for the simultaneous removal of Cr(VI) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). Carboxyl and hydroxyl groups contributed to the binding of FeS within the XG-WAS matrix, which helped establish a stable reactive interface. The slurry exhibited lower viscosity at higher shear rates, confirming its shear-thinning behavior. Increasing the XG concentration also improved sedimentation stability and oxidation resistance. Cr(VI) was completely removed at all tested concentrations. By contrast, TBBPA removal decreased from 81.93% to 53.19% as the Cr(VI) concentration increased from 20 to 80 mg L −1 . It also decreased from 92.49% to 58.99% when the TBBPA concentration increased from 5 to 20 μM. These concentration-dependent trends reflect the finite reducing capacity of the slurry and the preferential consumption of electrons by Cr(VI). Humic acid, Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , and Cl − enhanced TBBPA removal to varying degrees, while Cr(VI) removal remained complete. XPS analysis showed that Cr(VI) was reduced and immobilized as Cr(III) species. HPLC-MS analysis revealed the stepwise debromination of TBBPA to BPA. These findings demonstrate that XG-WAS@n-FeS is a stable and effective slurry for treating water containing both Cr(VI) and TBBPA. Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) analogues have been investigated for their prevalent occurrence in environments and potential hazardous effects to humans and wildlife; however, there is still limited knowledge regarding their toxicokinetics and trophic transfer in aquatic food chains. Using a developed toxicokinetic model framework, we quantified the bioaccumulation, biotransformation and trophic transfer of tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS) and tetrabromobisphenol A di(allyl ether) (TBBPA-DAE) during trophic transfer from brine shrimp ( Artemia salina ) to zebrafish ( Danio rerio ). The results showed that the two TBBPA analogues could be readily accumulated by brine shrimp, and the estimated bioconcentration factor ( BCF ) value of TBBPS (5.68 L kg -1 ww) was higher than that of TBBPA-DAE (1.04 L kg -1 ww). The assimilation efficiency (AE) of TBBPA-DAE in zebrafish fed brine shrimp was calculated to be 16.3%, resulting in a low whole-body biomagnification factor ( BMF ) in fish (0.684 g g -1 ww). Based on the transformation products screened using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatograph-high resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-HRMS), oxidative debromination and hydrolysis were identified as the major transformation pathways of TBBPS, while the biotransformation of TBBPA-DAE mainly took place through ether bond breaking and phase-II metabolism. Lower accumulation of TBBPA as a metabolite than its parent chemical was observed in both brine shrimp and zebrafish, with metabolite parent concentration factors ( MPCFs ) < 1. The investigated BCFs for shrimp of the two TBBPA analogues were only 3.77 × 10 -1 0 - 5.59 × 10 -3 times of the theoretical K shrimp-water based on the polyparameter linear free energy relationships (pp-LFERs) model, and the BMF of TBBPA-DAE for fish was 0.299 times of the predicted K shrimp-fish . Overall, these results indicated the potential of the trophic transfer in bioaccumulation of specific TBBPA analogues in higher trophic-level aquatic organisms and pointed out biotransformation as an important mechanism in regulating their bioaccumulation processes. Environmental Implication The internal concentration of a pollutant in the body determines its toxicity to organisms, while bioaccumulation and trophic transfer play important roles in elucidating its risks to ecosystems. Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) analogues have been extensively investigated for their adverse effects on humans and wildlife; however, there is still limited knowledge regarding their toxicokinetics and trophic transfer in aquatic food chains. This study investigated the bioaccumulation, biotransformation and trophic transfer of TBBPS and TBBPA-DAE in a simulated di-trophic food chain. This state-of-art study will provide a reference for further research on this kind of emerging pollutant in aquatic environments.

Simultaneous TBBPA removal and Cr(VI) reduction by Pycnoporus sanguineus together with the effect of these co-existed pollutants on the fungal cellular characteristics were investigated in this study, aiming at illuminating the mechanism involved in the interactions between contaminants and microbial cells. The results revealed that Cr(VI) reduction and TBBPA removal declined from 92.5%, 75.4–30.6%, 44.8% when Cr(VI) concentration increased from 5 to 40 mg/L, respectively. The removal efficiencies for Cr(VI) and TBBPA reached 61.4% and 94% separately under the optimum concentration of TBBPA at 10 mg/L. Subsequent analyses indicated that the negative effect of Cr(VI) of high concentrations on Cr(VI) reduction and TBBPA removal was mainly attributed to the inhibition of fungal growth, intracellular proteins synthesis , cell viability and ATP enzyme activity . Compared with the moderate impact of TBBPA, the cell membrane of P. sanguineus was impaired severely and the surface morphology and intracellular structure changed dramatically in the presence of high concentration of Cr(VI) (above 10 mg/L). This study also suggested that high level of TBBPA (15 and 20 mg/L) promoted the synthesis of intracellular proteins and improved ATP enzyme activity within the first 48 h of the reaction for enhancing the transportation and transformation of TBBPA.
