A novel competitive electrochemical impedance biosensor for the ultrasensitive detection of umami substances based on Pd/Cu-TCPP(Fe)

Liqin Kong,Feng Hong,Peng Luan,Yiping Chen,Yaoze Feng,Ming Zhu

The development of biosensors capable of assessing umami intensity has elicited significant attention. However, the detection range of these biosensors is constrained by the sensing components and strategies used. In this study, we introduce a novel competitive, ultra-high-sensitivity electrochemical impedance biosensor by utilizing composite nanomaterials and T1R1 as a composite signal probe. Pd/Cu-TCPP(Fe) had a substantial surface area, effectively enhancing the loading capacity of the T1R1 and thus augmenting the biosensor's recognition precision. Furthermore, the Pd/Cu-TCPP(Fe) elevated peroxidase-like activity catalyzed the formation of insoluble precipitates of 4-CN, resulting in cascaded amplification of the impedance signal. The remarkable catalytic activity of the composite signal probe endowed the biosensor with exceptional analytical performance, featuring a detection limit of 0.86 pg/mL and a linear detection range spanning from 10 to 10000 pg/mL. Successful application of the biosensor for umami substance detection in fish was also demonstrated, signifying its substantial potential in food-flavor evaluation.

Ratiometric fluorescence/colorimetric sensor based on aptamer-regulated dual-functional UiO-66-TCPP for multimodal detection of β-lactoglobulin

Chenglin Zhang,Ya Wang,Qian Zhang,Baolian Liu,Xiupei Yang

The accurate determination of β-Lactoglobulin (β-LG), a major dairy allergen, is essential for susceptible individuals' health. Here, a multimodal β-LG sensor was developed by utilizing the aptamer (Apt) to regulate the metal-organic framework UiO-66-TCPP’ functions. The prepared UiO-66-TCPP had both fluorescence and peroxidase activity. After adsorbing β-LG Apt, the catalytic activity of UiO-66-TCPP was enhanced through increased substrate affinity and electron transfer, while the fluorescence of 6-carboxyfluorescein-labeled Apt was quenched via multiple interactions with the material, and the fluorescence of UiO-66-TCPP itself remained unchanged. After binding to β-LG, Apt desorbed from UiO-66-TCPP surface, thereby restoring Apt fluorescence and lowering UiO-66-TCPP’ catalytic activity. Thus, a colorimetric/ratiometric fluorescence platform for β-LG sensing in dairy products was constructed with low limits of detection (16.19, 47.69 ng/mL). On-site visual detection was further achieved by RGB analysis on a smartphone. This study proposes novel approaches to creating multi-modal platforms for accurate food allergen determination.

Heterogeneous Charge Membranes with Sub-10-nanometer Polyamide / Zn-TCPP Dual-layer for Lithium Extraction

Fei Guo,Lingfeng Wang,Huixin Dong,Pengyu Yan,Shishuo Wang,Qingquan Li,Shaohua Yin,Guoli Zhou,Ning Zhang,Xiao Wu,Yuandong Jia,Gaohong He,Xiaobin Jiang

High ion-selectivity and robust long-term stability are critical performance metrics for nanofiltration (NF) membranes targeting lithium extraction from high-salinity brines with impurities and high magnesium lithium ratios. Herein, a positive and negative heterostructure dual-layer NF membrane with sub-10 nanometer PA layer on 2D Zn-TCPP nanosheets through interfacial polymerization method coupled with vacuum assisted filtration was constructed. PA layer with positively charge on the top performed as the ‘shield’ that effectively retains Mg2+, while negatively charged Zn-TCPP coupled with uniform pores performed as the ‘accelerator’ to facilitate Li+ permeate. The addition of Zn-TCPP can increase the membrane free volume fraction and construct effective screening channels. An appropriate amount of Zn-TCPP nanosheets can construct PA layers as thin as 5 nm and lead to the best Li/Mg separation performance. (Water permeance of 6.79 L⋅m−2⋅h−1 bar−1 over 360 hours continuous operation when Mg/Li ratio is 50:1, and Li+/Mg2+ separation factor is 80.79). In the ternary metal ions solution tests (Li⁺, Mg²⁺, X⁺, where X = Na⁺ or K⁺ with doubled concentration), Li+/Mg2+ separation factor remains still above 40. The DFT simulations and molecular dynamics reveal The transmembrane energy barrier for Mg²⁺ significantly exceeds that for Li⁺ across the membrane. The adsorption heights of ions on Zn-TCPP in a stable state, the different ion perforation energy and ion diffusion rate furtherly explain the reason for the membrane with excellent separation performance.

Effects of TCPP and TCEP exposure on human corneal epithelial cells: Oxidative damage, cell cycle arrest, and pyroptosis

Zhen-Ning Zhang,Dan-Lei Yang,Hai Liu,Jue Bi,Ya-Bo Bao,Jiao-Yang Ma,Qin-Xiang Zheng,Dao-Lei Cui,Wei Chen,Ping Xiang

Tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) and Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) are the widely used organophosphorus flame retardants indoors and easily accessible to the eyes as the common adhesive components of dust and particle matter, however, hardly any evidence has demonstrated their corneal toxicity. In this study, the adverse effects of TCPP, TCEP, and TCPP + TCEP exposure on human corneal epithelial cells (HCECs) were investigated. The cell viability and morphology, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), cell cycle, and the expressions of cell cycle and pyroptosis-related genes were assessed to explain the underlying mechanisms. Compared to individual exposure, co-exposure to TCPP 20 +TCEP 20 showed higher cytotoxicity with a sharp decrease of >30% in viability and more serious oxidative damage by increasing ROS production to 110.92% compared to the control group. Furthermore, the cell cycle arrested at the S phase (36.20%) was observed after combined treatment, evidenced by the upregulation of cyclin D1 , CDK2 , CDK4 , CDK6 , p21, and p27 . Interestingly, pyroptosis-related genes GSDMD , Caspase-1 , NLRP3 , IL-1β , IL-18 , NLRP1, and NLRC4 expressions were promoted with cell swelling and glowing morphology. Oxidative stress and cell cycle arrest probably acted as a key role in TCPP 20 +TCEP 20 -induced cytotoxicity and pyroptosis in HCECs. Our results suggested that TCPP 20 +TCEP 20 co-exposure induced severer corneal damage, further illustrating its significance in estimating indoor health hazards to humans.

Biocompatible 2D Cu-TCPP Nanosheets Derived from Cu2O Nanocubes as Multifunctional Nanoplatforms for Combined Anticancer Therapy

Le Gao,Yibo Song,Jun Zhong,Xiaofeng Lin,Shu-Feng Zhou,Guowu Zhan

Two-dimensional (2D) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) could serve as multifunctional nanoplatforms to load small-molecule drugs and enzyme-mimicking nanoparticles (NPs) with a high efficiency for combined cancer therapy. Herein, we have prepared novel 2D Cu-tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) nanosheets with an average thickness of 1.2 ± 0.1 nm using Cu2O nanocubes (50 nm) as a template and solid copper ion supplier. Cu2O nanocubes can be consumed and hybridized with the obtained Cu-TCPP, depending on the molar ratio of Cu2O and TCPP linker. The resultant Cu2O/Cu-TCPP could serve as nanoplatforms for co-loading of Pt and Au NPs to construct multifunctional Cu2O/Cu-TCPP/(Pt–Au) nanomedicines, which showed a superior anticancer effect via multiple therapeutic modes. For instance, Cu(II)-TCPP can produce 1O2 in the presence of acidic H2O2 by the Russell mechanism and the intrinsic Cu(I) ions (derived from the residual Cu2O) could mediate a Fenton-like reaction in tumorous tissues to generate toxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH). Moreover, the loaded Pt NPs with catalase (CAT)-mimic activity could decompose hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into O2 within the tumor cells, increasing the local O2 concentration, modulating the tumorous hypoxia atmosphere, and promoting the O2-dependent glucose oxidation reaction. Furthermore, Au NPs with glucose oxidase (GOx)-mimic activity could accelerate the consumption of glucose and cut nutrient supply to induce starvation therapy. Consequently, our designed 2D MOF-based therapeutic nanomedicines would be a promising candidate for future smart and combined cancer therapy.

Efficient visible-light-responsive novel P/BiOIO3/Co-TCPP Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for oxytetracycline hydrochloride removal: synergistic effects of P doping and organic complexes

Xinglin Li,Pengfei Zhu,Yu Chen,Maojie Zhang,Yunhui Jiang

In this paper, Co 2+ was successfully assembled into a complex by solvothermal method with meso-tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP), and then a novel P/BiOIO 3 /Co-TCPP inorganic-organic composite photocatalytic material was prepared by one-pot solvothermal method. It was found that after 60 min of reaction under visible light, the degradation rate of the preferred P/BiOIO 3 /Co-TCPP composite material for 20 mg/L oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) reached 88.15 %, with its pseudo-first-order kinetic model fitting constant measured at 0.03852 min −1 . It was 5.12 and 1.52 times that of BiOIO 3 and P-doped BiOIO 3 respectively, and there was no significant decrease in activity after three consecutive uses. Meanwhile, the noxiousness of the OTC solution after photocatalytic degradation by this catalyst was significantly reduced. The characterization results indicate that the primary factor contributing to the improved activity is the P/BiOIO 3 /Co-TCPP catalyst can be attributed to the doping of BiOIO 3 by P and the coupling of Co-TCPP to BiOIO 3 , which significantly improves the catalyst's response ability to visible light. Meanwhile, P/BiOIO 3 and Co-TCPP form a Z -scheme heterojunction, which greatly facilitates the separation of photogenerated carriers. Finally, the electron transfer mechanism and possible degradation pathways of the photocatalytic degradation of OTC by P/BiOIO 3 /Co-TCPP were proposed. This study provides a feasible and effective method for the modification of BiOIO 3 -based heterojunction photocatalysts and the treatment of antibiotics in water bodies.

Fabrication of Two-Dimensional Metal–Organic Framework Nanosheets through Crystal Dissolution–Growth Kinetics

Yawen Xiao,Chen Chen,Yangli Wu,Yutao Yin,Haibo Wu,Hongfeng Li,Yun Fan,Jiansheng Wu,Sheng Li,Xiao Huang,Weina Zhang,Bing Zheng,Fengwei Huo

Controlling the morphology of the metal–organic framework (MOF) for nanosheets is beneficial for understanding their crystal growth kinetics and useful for extending these MOF nanosheets to advanced applications, in particular for gas separation and device integration. However, synthesizing MOF nanosheets with uniform thickness or desirable size still remains challenging. Herein, we provide a crystal dissolution–growth strategy for fabricating dispersible porphyrin MOF nanosheets with lateral dimensions and nanometer thickness. A morphological transition (bulk crystals–nanosheets–bulk crystals) in Zn-TCPP was observed when controlling the crystal growth kinetics by adjusting the reaction parameters (temperature and acidity). These findings encouraged the synthesis of other types of nanosheets (Cu-TCPP, Zn-TCPP (Pd), and Cu-BDC nanosheets). Zn-TCPP (Pd) nanosheets were applied in field-effect transistors and exhibited photoresponse characteristics. This work demonstrates a new strategy for obtaining MOF nanosheets and casts a new light upon fabricating two-dimensional inorganic–organic hybrid materials with controlled thickness.

The synergistic anti-corrosion performance and mechanism of meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphine on steel bars in alkaline environments

Xue-qi Zhang,Qing-xian Yue,Rui Ding,Jie Liu

Corrosion protection of steel bars in alkaline concrete environments poses a common challenge in marine engineering. One approach to mitigate steel bar corrosion is the addition of corrosion inhibitors to the concrete. In alkaline environments, the passivation of rebars occurs through anodic passivation coupled with the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The catalysis of ORR can expedite anode passivation. To investigate the corrosion inhibition of steel bars in alkaline environments, meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphine (TCPP), known for its ORR catalytic properties, is selected. TCPP forms adsorption films on the surface of steel bars, facilitating the formation of passivation films. TCPP primarily adsorbs onto active sites on the surface of the passivation film, where lattice iron ions have leached. The adsorbed TCPP accelerates the formation of the passivation film through ORR catalysis, inhibiting the development of passivation film defects and enhancing the integrity and protection of the passivation film. The most significant effect is observed when the concentration of TCPP is 0.5 mmol/L. The physical adsorption of TCPP is primarily determined by the negative charge centers, namely the carboxyl group O and the pyrrole N. However, due to steric hindrance caused by the unrestricted rotation of the carboxyl benzene, the pyrrole N does not play a dominant role in chemical adsorption. Instead, the active site for chemical adsorption is the carboxyl group O. The adsorption process significantly reduces the diffusion coefficient of TCPP molecules, providing a robust and stable adsorption binding. Phthalocyanine molecules without carboxyl benzene groups adopt a planar structure, allowing them to form stable adsorption configurations on the iron surface through flat adsorption. This observation provides guidance for the design of novel metal phthalocyanine molecules. Specifically, the development of metal phthalocyanine molecules with modifying groups that are coplanar with the phthalocyanine ring and possess restricted rotation can achieve flat adsorption, improve coverage rate, and enhance adsorption configuration stability.

Two-Dimensional Cu-Porphyrin Metal–Organic Framework Nanosheet-Supported Flaky TiO2 as an Efficient Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalyst for Dye Degradation and Cr(VI) Reduction

Wenjing Zhu,Zhinan Xia,Bingfeng Shi,Changli Lü

A series of 2D M(Cu, Zn, Co, and Mn)-TCPP MOFs/TiO2 binary nanocomposites (TCPP = tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin) were constructed by solvothermal in situ loading of flaky TiO2 on the surface of 2D metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). The influence of different coordination metals on the catalytic activity was studied, and it was found that the 2D Cu-TCPP MOFs/TiO2 nanocomposite exhibited the best photo-Fenton performance. The superior property can be attributed to the high absorption coefficient and ultrathin two-dimensional structure of the 2D Cu-TCPP MOFs nanosheets. Meanwhile, the 2D Cu-TCPP MOFs/TiO2 II heterostructure can effectively promote the separation and transfer of photoformed carriers. Moreover, under visible irradiation, the optimized 2D Cu-TCPP MOFs/TiO2 composite can convert 99.9% of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) within 60 min with methanol as the hole scavenger at pH 3.14. Also, the photocatalytic performance of 2D Cu-TCPP MOFs/TiO2 was maintained after five reaction cycles. Furthermore, the proposed visible-light-driven photocatalysis mechanism of the 2D Cu-MOFs/TiO2 composite was reasonably derived according to experimental results. This study demonstrates the potential of building efficient TiO2-based visible light photocatalysts with 2D metal-porphyrin MOFs.

Qing Huang,Chen-dong Ling,Yan-li Zhang,Wen-feng Zhuge,Cui-zhong Zhang,Jin-yun Peng,Chao-guang Li

Considering the crucial role of riboflavin in human physiological functions, developing a rapid and sensitive detection method is essential in fields such as food and drug analysis. Electrochemical sensing is a powerful method for the determination of riboflavin. Herein, in this study, metal organic framework (MOF) microflower Cu-TCPP was prepared by solvothermal method using trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) as the modulator and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the structural guide. Then followed by the fabrication of a novel electrochemical sensor for riboflavin detection. The microflower-like morphology of Cu-TCPP provided numerous active sites for riboflavin oxidation. Meanwhile, electrochemical results demonstrated that the Cu-TCPP enhanced the electron transfer efficiency and electroactive surface area of GCE, exhibiting excellent catalytic performance. Under optimized detection conditions, square wave voltammetry (SWV) test showed that the Cu-TCPP sensor exhibited a linear range for riboflavin of 1.00 × 10 −8 to 9.91 × 10 −5 M, with a low limit of detection (LOD) (1.70 × 10 −9 M) (S/N = 3). The sensor possessed good selectivity, excellent anti-interference capability, and outstanding stability. Additionally, the sensor was successfully employed for riboflavin detection in real samples, and the spiked recovery rate ranged from 98.85% to 102.86%, indicating its significant application value in real sample analysis.

Ultrathin c-oriented Cu-TCPP membrane towards shape-selective molecular separation

Xiangyu Guo,Changxue Xie,Xinyao Dong,Han Xiao,Huiye Wei,Kaidi Mao,Tongan Yan,Yunpan Ying,Huina Wang,Chongli Zhong

Highly c-oriented Cu-TCPP ultrathin membrane was prepared through in-situ conversion method. • Green solvents and minimal amount of ligand were used in membrane preparation process. • The membrane can efficiently discriminate linear molecules from non-linear and non-planar molecules. • The shape-based separation mechanism was verified by DFT calculation. Efficient separation of molecules with similar molecular weights is highly demanded in chemical and pharmaceutical industries, yet still hard to achieve with traditional polymer-based membranes. Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes, especially ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) MOF membranes, offer a good opportunity for realizing these separations. However, current 2D MOF membranes are mainly prepared through the deposition method, which can bring uncertainty to the pore channels, compromising the separation ability. This work reports the preparation of a highly c-oriented ultrathin Cu-TCPP membrane through an electrostatic-assisted in-situ oriented transformation strategy using electrostatically adsorbed copper hydroxide nanostrands as a precursor layer. The resultant membrane has explicit transport channel to be the pores of Cu-TCPP, which enables the efficient discrimination of linear molecules from non-linear and non-planar molecules with similar and even lower molecular weights. Both the experimental work and density functional theory calculations confirm the sieving effect of the Cu-TCPP membrane towards two model molecules (methyl orange and hematoxylin). This work provides a paradigm for fully utilizing the potential of MOF membranes in the precise separation of molecules with similar molecular weights. Effective nanofiltration separation of molecules with similar molecular weights based on steric shape difference is enabled by the ultrathin c-oriented Cu-TCPP membrane prepared through a green and facile electrostatic assisted in-situ conversion strategy Download: Download high-res image (321KB) Download: Download full-size image
