Polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes are promising for diverse water treatment applications, particularly due to their high permeability, selectivity, and inherent antifouling properties. These NF membranes are highly sought after delivering high-quality drinking water. The development of high-performance NF membranes through interfacial polymerization (IP) requires careful optimization of heat treatment and post-treatment processes. In this study, we integrated these steps to establish an optimized heat treatment strategy utilizing post-treatment solutions. Systematic investigations revealed that the use of NaOH as a heating reagent etched the PA layer while promoting the hydrolysis of chloride groups, resulting in NF membranes with enhanced negative charge, improved hydrophilicity, and increased pore size. The optimized Post-3 demonstrated exceptional performance, with a permeability of 29.3 LMH/bar while achieving a remarkable 97.3 % removal efficiency for Na 2 SO 4 . The Post-3 exhibited excellent selectivity for both monovalent and multivalent ions, making it ideal for advanced water treatment applications. Furthermore, during natural surface water purification, the Post-3 effectively removed organic compounds while retaining moderate mineral content, ensuring the provision of safe drinking water with optimal mineral composition. The study also highlighted the outstanding fouling resistance and long-term stability of the Post-3, offering valuable insights into the customization of NF membranes for advanced drinking water treatment systems.

Zwitterions have been attracting great attention for researchers to tailor the separation membranes featuring enhanced water permeability and excellent antifouling property. Here we functionalized polyamide membrane surface with small-molecule zwitterions through sequential interfacial polymerization (SIP) technique to improve the performance of RO membranes . Zwitterionic molecules 3-(4-(2-((4-aminophenyl)amino)ethyl)morpholino-4-ium)propane-1-sulfonate (PPD-MEPS) and amino acid arginine were covalently bonded onto the PA surface via the amine groups of two zwitterions. Consequently, the surface hydrophilicity of both modified membranes were significantly improved with WCA decreased from ~60° to ~28°, and their surface negative charge also decreased to some extent at high pH values. The water permeability increased from 2.45 LMH/bar to 3.81–3.85 LMH/bar, increasing by about 57%, while maintained a NaCl rejection as high as 98.5%. In addition, the zwitterions-modified RO membranes exhibited much improved antibacterial attachment (E.coil) and fouling resistance to model foulants bovine serum albumin (BSA), lysozyme (LYZ) and humic acid (HA). Therefore, the facile zwitterions modified membranes possessing high water permeability and excellent antifouling performance, especially using amino acid Arg may find their potential promising application in water treatment.

Reverse osmosis (RO) technology can get rid of small molecular contaminants and salts with a very high efficiency, so that it has exhibited promising potential for addressing the emerging problem of a clean water shortage. In this paper, one new thin film composite (TFC) membrane with a novel MWCNT/polyamide (MWCNT/PA) composite rejection layer had been manufactured via interfacial polymerization (IP) method under negative pressure. The MWCNTs framework was first fabricated on surface of PVDF substrate and then the polyamide matrix was filled into the framework by IP process between the two monomers ( M -phenylenediamine and trimesoyl chloride) under negative pressure. The novel rejection layer obviously enhanced the water flux and antifouling performance without harming the desalination rate in RO process. The improved performances can be attributed to the larger amount of hydrophilic MWCNTs which were embedded into the rejection layer and worked as water channels. Meanwhile, this research also revealed that enhancing the density of water channels in polyamide rejection layer and the hydrophilicity of membrane surface could effectively improve the TFC membrane performance.

Loose nanofiltration (LNF) membranes possessing high water permeance and outstanding dye/salt selectivity are highly desirable for fractionating dyes and salts for textile wastewater . Herein, inexpensive and nontoxic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was utilized as an aqueous monomer via interfacial polymerization to fabricate novel highly permeable LNF membranes upon activation by sodium hydroxide . Systematic chemical and structural analyses indicated that the prepared polyester membrane formed was loose, hydrophilic , and negatively charged. The properties of the LNF membranes were optimized by adjusting the curing temperature (70 °C–100 °C). The optimized PVA-based membrane (PVA-M70°C) showed excellent water permeability (52.6 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ), favorable dye rejection (> 90.0 %) and low salt rejection (NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 rejection rates were lower than 5 % and 18 %, respectively). Furthermore, the PVA-M membrane demonstrated excellent antifouling properties and long-term stability. Considering the biodegradable nature and low cost of PVA, PVA-based polyester membranes show great promise for LNF membrane production on an industrial scale. This work advances the use of PVA as a green aqueous monomer in fabricating highly permeable LNF membranes for efficient dye/salt selectivity .

Nanofiltration (NF) is a promising technology for brackish water desalination due to its tunable separation efficiency and effective removal of organic contaminants. However, the limited diversity of commercial NF membranes hinders optimal performance. To address this, we developed a tailored NF membrane by simultaneously increasing the piperazine (PIP) concentration and decreasing the trimesoyl chloride (TMC) concentration aiming for the treatment of a typical sulfate-type brackish water. The optimized membrane demonstrated superior performance: adequate desalination capability and improved anti-fouling properties. In particular, the NF membrane fabricated with 1.5 %( w / v ) PIP and 0.03 %(w/v) TMC exhibited a more compact polyamide structure and superior desalination performance compared to NF270. In comparison to NF90, it presented greater surface hydrophilicity (~40°) and nearly two-fold higher permeation flux. Moreover, it exhibited significantly improved anti-fouling ability, as evidenced by its 99.9 % flux recovery versus NF90's 23.5 % after brine cleaning. This enhancement is attributed to its optimized solute selectivity and surface chemistry, which reduce concentration polarization and foulant adhesion. Our work provides a practical and feasible strategy for customizing NF membrane structures to improve desalination efficiency and sustainability.

Thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes are essential for separating ions and small molecules in the industries, including water treatment, chemical processing, energy production, and pharmaceuticals. These membranes are typically fabricated via interfacial polymerization (IP) on polysulfone (PSf) or polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration (UF) supports. Apparently, optimizing the physicochemical properties of the UF support is very important for achieving TFC-PA NF membranes with superior separation performance. This study systematically investigated the influence of common pore-forming agents used in UF membrane fabrication, specifically polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and lithium chloride (LiCl), on the desalination performance of resulting TFC-PA NF membranes. We characterized the zeta potential, pore structure, and surface wettability of PSf UF membranes prepared with each pore agent. These characteristics were then correlated with the adsorption and desorption behavior of piperazine (PIP) monomers during the IP process. Our findings indicate that employing PVP as a pore-forming agent not only enhanced PIP adsorption within the UF support but also facilitated its rapid release during the IP reaction. This dual effect resulted in a PA selective layer with reduced thickness and smaller pore size. Consequently, the TFC-PA NF membrane fabricated on the PVP-modified UF support exhibited both higher water permeance and improved salt rejection. This research highlights the significant role of the pore-forming agent in determining the performance of TFC-PA NF membranes. The results suggest that UF supports prepared using PVP as a pore agent may be optimal for creating NF membranes with enhanced overall performance.

The separation performance of polyamide (PA) thin film composite (TFC) membrane is critically influenced by the substrates. Numerical models and experimental studies suggest that substrates with high porosity comprising small pores can effectively improve membrane performance . Here we report that a commercial polyethylene (PE) micro-porous membrane with high porosity was chosen as substrate for fabricating PA TFC membrane. The PE substrate was modified by co-depositing the copolymers of gallic acid and γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane to improve its bulk hydrophilicity . The porosity, pore size, morphology and chemical properties of the modified PE substrates were characterized. The resultant PA TFC-PE membrane had a favorable water permeance of 2.33 ± 0.06 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 as well as a high NaCl rejection of 99.0 ± 0.4 % because of the suitable porosity, pore size and hydrophilicity for interfacial polymerization reaction. Our work is expected to provide an efficient way for the modification of hydrophobic porous membrane for fabricating PA TFC membrane.

Polyamide thin-film composite (PA TFC) membranes are generally leverage in water purification, but the large-scale commercialization is hindered by high modifier synthesis costs and complex preparation processes. A hydrophilic amino acid derivative 2-amino-3-hydroxy-3-phenylpropanoic acid (AHPA) using natural amino acid as the precursor, which boasted the advantages of abundant sources, low cost, and renewability, was designed and synthesized via a one-step method and incorporated into PA TFC membranes through a two-step interfacial polymerization process. Comprehensive characterizations confirmed successful AHPA incorporation, enabled by reactive functional groups of the low-cost precursor, which regulated surface charge, enhanced membrane hydrophilicity, and diminished roughness. The AHPA-modified membranes revealed enhanced water permeability with MgSO₄ rejection of 98.97%, achieving a balance between functionality and cost-effectiveness. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations revealed that enhanced antifouling performance stemmed from synergistic hydration layers and electrostatic interactions. Long-term stability tests demonstrated consistent water flux and salt rejection, with superior organic pollutant removal for textile wastewater. This economical, scalable strategy based on low-cost precursors bridges lab-scale modification and industrial application, providing a feasible route for mass-producing high-performance water treatment membranes.

A thermally induced phase separation followed by non-solvent induced phase separation (TIPS-co-NIPS) was used to prepare polyethersulfone (PES) substrate with reduced internal concentration polarization (ICP) for thin film composite forward osmosis (TFC-FO) membrane. Using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the additive, impacts of TIPS process on substrate properties, TFC layers and FO performances were investigated. The results revealed that the substrate prepared by TIPS-co-NIPS method with 10 s cooling time showed a fully finger-like structure, enhanced permeation performance and better surface hydrophilicity. As a result, the corresponding TFC-FO membrane exhibited 44% lower structural parameter than the TFC-FO membrane based on NIPS substrate (684 µm versus 380 µm), high water fluxes up to 32.9/20.4 LMH and reverse salt fluxes of 14.1/8.2 gMH in the PRO/FO mode using 1 M NaCl as the draw against DI-water feed. Therefore, the proposed TIPS-co-NIPS method utilizing PEG as the additive may be considered as a feasible approach to regulate substrate structure and property for TFC-FO membrane.

The low-solid sludge concentration in reactors limited application of anaerobic digestion. Forward osmosis technology could be innovatively used for adjusting total moisture content of anaerobic digestion (AD) process in order to achieve a higher solid concentration and smaller reactor volume of AD reactor, for which membrane fouling is a crucial problem and determines the water flux and system performance. Many factors such as flux and composition of feed solution might have influence on the membrane fouling. In high-solid anaerobic digester, total solid could be critical to membrane fouling. A simulative anaerobic digestion forward osmosis membrane bioreactor (adFO-MBR) system was designed for fouling investigation of thin-film composite (TFC) forward osmosis membrane. Anaerobic digestion sludge samples with different total solid (TS) content or with different particle size was used as feed solution in this study. Water flux, adsorption capacity of protein and polysaccharose, SEM-EDX and AIR-FTIR were used for characterization of the pristine and fouled membranes. Experimental results showed that feed solution with TS at 5.5–8.0% had the highest and relatively stable water flux (5.5–7.3 L/m 2 /h) because of the skeleton support and water passage in sludge with high TS. Water flux with smaller particulates and narrow particle size distribution had a slow decline trend. Adsorption capacity of protein and polysaccharose were positively related with total solid content of AD sludge. The results of this study can suggest us the appropriate parameters of AD sludge in adFO-MBR in terms of membrane fouling control.

Forward osmosis (FO) is a promising membrane-based technology for water treatment and desalination. But, internal concentration polarization (ICP), a unique phenomenon in FO, generally leads to the sharp performance decline. In this study, a novel polyacrylonitrile (PAN) substrate with low polymer concentration (4 wt%) of the thin-film composite (TFC) membrane with a low membrane structural parameter ( S ) is developed with sodium chloride (NaCl) aqueous solution as the coagulation bath, and exhibits high performance for FO applications. The existence of NaCl in the coagulation bath not only affects the phase inversion process significantly, resulting in the formation of a thin substrate with finely tuned morphology structure, but also benefits the formation of a uniform and defect-free top polyamide (PA) layer. Effects of NaCl content in the coagulation bath on the morphology and intrinsic properties of resulting PAN substrates, the formed PA layer, as well as the morphology and FO performance of resulting TFC membranes, are investigated systematically. Moreover, an extended study on cellulose acetate (CA) substrate is also conducted to study the universality of this salt induction method to fabricate high-performance TFC membranes. Compared to the control TFC membrane, modified TFC membranes show much lower S parameters and superior separation performance with the higher water flux (324% increment) and lower reverse salt flux (58% reduction).

The development of thin film composite (TFC) membrane with a high flux, a good fouling resistance and superior rejections remains a challenging task for membrane researchers, due to the inherent permeability-selectivity trade-off of the polymeric selective layer. In this work, highly permeable TFC membranes with excellent fouling resistance are developed by employing hydrophilic pore-containing monomers – ethylenediamine (EDA)-substituted cyclodextrins ( α , β , γ -CD-EDA) in interfacial polymerization. Effects of CD-EDA type on the surface properties, pore size, separation performance and antifouling properties of TFC_CD-EDA membranes are investigated by considering the differences in CD cavity size and EDA substitution degree. Superior FO flux up to 26–28 LMH (0.5 M Na 2 SO 4 draw solution) and exceptional antifouling properties with relatively low flux reduction (< 20%) and high flux recovery rate (> 91%) can be achieved by TFC_CD-EDA membranes, owing to the unique structure of CD-EDA with the intramolecular cavity and abundant hydrophilic hydroxyl groups. Furthermore, TFC_ β -CD-EDA membrane is applied for the enrichment of high-concentration BSA solution by taking advantage of its high flux, low reverse draw solute leakage and excellent fouling resistance. The obtained high BSA enrichment efficiency and high-quality BSA suggest a great potential of TFC_CD-EDA membrane in this aspect.
