Polymer-bonded explosives (PBX), as a classical representative of energetic composite materials, have poor mechanical properties due to weak interface interaction, which limits their wide application. Inspired by the strong adhesion of mussels, coating polydopamine (PDA) on the surface of energetic materials is considered an effective method to enhance the interaction. In this study, the self-polymerization of dopamine was accelerated by the addition of potassium permanganate, which was successfully coated on the surface of dihydroxylammonium 5,5′-bistetrazole-1,1′-diolate (TKX-50), a high-energy and insensitive energetic material. After PDA coating, TKX-50 had excellent thermal stability and mechanical properties. The spontaneous decomposition temperature and thermal explosion critical temperature of TKX-50 after PDA coating increased from 204.300 and 217.604 °C to 210.700 and 223.839 °C, respectively, and the compressive strength increased from 6.38 to 7.65 MPa. This novel method improves the thermal stability and mechanical properties of energetic materials to ensure their large-scale industrial production and application.

Ammonium perchlorate (AP), cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) and 1,1’-dihydroxy-5,5’-ditetrazolium dihydroxyl ammonium (TKX-50) play a vital role in aerospace and military applications. However, improving their thermal decomposition performance remains a critical technical bottleneck. In this study, CuBi 2 O 4 (CBO) was selected as combustion catalyst due to its superior thermal stability and structural tunability, and Fe doping strategy was introduced to modulate its electronic band structure. The effective incorporation of Fe in CBO not only induces lattice distortion, but also stabilizes the thermodynamic nonequilibrium state, thereby reducing the energy barrier for electron transfer and effectively suppressing carrier recombination. Fe-CBO exhibits narrow band gap (1.73 eV), excellent electron transport properties and abundant active sites, which can significantly improve catalytic performance. Systematic optimization of Fe-doping contents reveals that 15 %Fe-CBO has optimal catalytic performance, reducing thermal decomposition peak temperatures of AP, RDX, and TKX-50 by 76.3, 5.7 and 36.3 °C respectively, while lowering apparent activation energies to 125.26, 182.34 and 164.60 kJ·mol −1 . Laser ignition experiments further demonstrates that 15 %Fe-CBO can enhance flame brightness, expand the flame propagation area of AP, RDX and TKX-50, and reduce the time to achieve stable combustion. Moreover, the burning rate of the AP-based composite solid propellant is increased by 1.95 times after the introduction of 15 %Fe-CBO. The decomposition mechanism of AP, RDX, and TKX-50 catalyzed by 15 %Fe-CBO was proposed based on valence band theory and comprehensive experimental characterization. Fe-doping strategy provides a novel approach for the design of efficient combustion catalysts.

Multifunctional composite catalysts show significant potential for enhancing the thermal decomposition and combustion of energetic materials. However, their synergistic mechanisms remain unclear. In this work, we prepared a 3D macroporous (3DM) CuO/ZnO catalyst via PMMA template calcination and combined it with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene through electrostatic assembly, to form a 3DM CuO/ZnO-Ti 3 C 2 T x heterogeneous catalyst with uniform morphology and high conductivity. Results show that 3DM CuO/ZnO-Ti 3 C 2 T x has a good catalytic effect on TKX-50, which can advance the decomposition peak from 246 to 208 ℃, increase the heat release from 730 to 1106 J/g and boost combustion time from 560 to 790 ms, improve the flame temperature from 773 to 1109 ℃. By combining LAMMPS, materials studio software and TG-MS-IR analysis, the catalytic mechanism of 3DM material on the thermal decomposition of TKX-50 was deeply explored. 3DM materials can adsorb hydroxylamine molecule, accelerate the H + transfer process, achieve rapid exchange of H and OH, and realize the rapid and concentrated release of gas, thereby promoting the decomposition process of TKX-50. Consequently, the construction of composite catalysts with synergy can start from the perspective of forming more heterostructures, which provides better theoretical support for future research on composite catalysts.
