The frequent occurrence of pesticides and nanoparticles in aquatic environments raises ecological concerns. Tebuconazole (TEB) is a widely used triazole fungicide, and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are one of the commonly used engineered nanoparticles. Both are frequently detected in the aquatic environment, yet their combined effects on aquatic organisms remain inadequately understood. In this study, we investigated the impacts of coexposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of ZnO NPs on the toxicity and bioaccumulation of TEB in zebrafish (Danio rerio). The 96-h median lethal concentration (LC50) of TEB to zebrafish was 6.45 mg/L. Coexposure to ZnO NPs (1–100 mg/L) led to a slight increase in acute toxicity of TEB. Long-term (28-day) coexposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of TEB and ZnO NPs exacerbated oxidative stress and apoptosis, decreased the activity of the detoxification enzyme carboxylesterase, and upregulated cytochrome P450 activity. Additionally, ZnO NPs did not enhance the accumulation of TEB but prolonged its clearance and altered its bioaccumulation pattern. These results indicate that the presence of ZnO NPs may increase the potential risk associated with TEB exposure in zebrafish, underscoring the need for further investigation of the interactive effects of pesticides and engineered nanomaterials in aquatic ecosystems.

The effectiveness of conventional fungicides is often limited by poor bioavailability and unacceptable toxicity. Owing to their high loading capacity, long-term validity, and anti-photodegradation, the pH-sensitive layered double hydroxides (LDHs) nanocomposites for controlled release of fungicide is a promising candidate in agricultural protection. As the interfacial regulated modifier, dopamine (DA) with bountiful phenolic hydroxyl group is an ideal synergistic agent to improve interaction with the target organisms. The DA modified tebuconazole (TEB)-LDHs nanocomposites was fabricated for enhancing the antifungal efficacy and biological safety. The cumulative release rates of TEB from TEB-LDHs and TEB-LDHs-DA nanocomposites indicated the pH-sensitive controlled release behavior with a higher cumulative release rate under acid condition. Based on the bioactivity assay, the TEB-LDHs-DA nanocomposites was endowed with a pH responsive stimulus nano-fungicide and exhibited a superior antifungal activity against Fusarium pseudograminearum , for improving delivery capability, inducing intracellular excessive reactive oxygen species, reducing membrane potential and inhibiting ergosterol biosynthesis. The biosafety assay suggested that DA grafted onto TEB-LDHs nanocomposites could effectively reduce the acute toxicity of TEB to zebrafish. Overall, these results demonstrated that DA successfully grafted onto TEB-LDHs nanocomposites was able to provide a nanocomposites platform for responsive stimulus strategy of crop disease control in cost-effective and ecological manner.

With the intensification of modern agricultural production activities and industrial development, the presence of pesticides and persistent organic pollutants in the soil environment has emerged as a global ecological challenge. However, the toxicological effects of co-exposure to pesticides and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on non-target soil organisms have not yet been fully understood. In this study, a tripartite research framework integrating behavioral, biochemical, and molecular dynamics analyses was adopted to investigate the potential mechanisms underlying the combined toxicity of tebuconazole and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) on Eisenia fetida (E. fetida) . The results demonstrated that exposure to tebuconazole alone and co-exposure to tebuconazole and PFOA significantly affected the behavior of E . fetida , inhibited growth and development, and altered movement patterns. At the biochemical level, the antioxidant defense system exhibited functional compensation. In contrast, detoxification and neurotransmission pathways showed systemic impairment. Increasing PFOA concentrations enhanced several toxic responses under co-exposure conditions. Meanwhile, molecular dynamics simulations further suggested that tebuconazole and PFOA could interact with the active sites of target proteins, including superoxide dismutase, acetylcholinesterase, and glutathione S -transferases, and actin, through hydrophobic interactions and unique halogen bonds. These interactions were associated with alterations in protein conformational dynamics, suggesting their potential involvement in the regulation of antioxidant defense, detoxification processes, neurotransmission, and locomotor-related functions. Collectively, these findings provide molecular-level evidence for compound–protein interactions and enhance the understanding of toxicological responses associated with pesticide–POP co-exposure in soil organisms under chronic exposure conditions.

Freshwater organisms are routinely exposed to complex mixtures of pollutants, yet current risk assessments largely fail to account for their combined effects. Here, a comprehensive approach was employed to elucidate the toxicological responses in the livers of hook snout carps ( Opsariichthys bidens ) following co-exposure to the heavy metal copper (Cu) and the pesticide tebuconazole (Teb). Our findings demonstrated that simultaneous exposure to Cu and Teb elicited a pronounced synergistic toxicity in O. bidens . The observed synergy stemmed from the distinct modes of action of the two pollutants: Cu induced oxidative stress via the Fenton reaction, while Teb disrupted cytochrome P450–mediated metabolism. Both individual and combined exposures elicited a spectrum of adverse effects, including histopathological alterations, oxidative stress, apoptosis, inflammation, impaired detoxification, endocrine disruption, and disturbances in amino acid and glycolipid metabolism, with the mixture (Mix) producing markedly more severe impairments. Their interaction initiated a self-reinforcing cycle, beginning with the collapse of the antioxidant system, cascading into profound disruption of the TCA cycle and glycolipid metabolism, and ultimately culminating in an energy crisis accompanied by amplified apoptosis. These findings established a mechanistic framework for evaluating the combined ecological risks of organic and inorganic pollutants.

In this study, the sludge-based biochar was prepared and utilized as an adsorbent for the removal of two commonly used pesticides in agriculture, namely tebuconazole (Teb) and linuron (Lin) in an aqueous solution. The main contributing factors such as biochar preparation conditions, persistent free radicals as well as contact time, agitation speed, biochar dose, temperature, and pH were investigated. The physicochemical properties were characterized by SEM + EDS, FTIR, BET, EPR, etc. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacities based on the Langmuir model was 7.8650 mg g−1 for tebuconazole and that based on Freundlich model was 9.0645 mg·g-1 for linuron at 25°C. The pseudo-second-order kinetic equations were all fitted well to the kinetic process of the adsorption of the two pesticides with all R2 ≥ 0.915. The maximum values of tebuconazole adsorption capacity occur at pH = 3. Meanwhile, linuron was not affected by pH. Both Cr6+ (r = −0.793∗∗/ −0.943∗∗) and humic acid (r = −0.798∗∗/ −0.947∗∗) significantly inhibited the adsorption amount of tebuconazole and linuron onto the biochar. Electron spin resonance signals (ESR) indicated that environmentally persistent radicals (EPFRs) are preferentially formed at lower pyrolysis temperatures and lower transition metal concentrations. The g-factors for BC400, BC600, BCF400, and BCF600 were 2.0036, 2.0035, 2.0034, and 2.0033, respectively, indicating that the EPFRs mainly have a carbon-centered structure with adjacent oxygen atoms. In addition, to close to the actual situation, natural water (from YanTai) was collected to simulate pesticide contamination. This study demonstrates that sludge-based biochar can achieve efficient removal of tebuconazole and linuron in aqueous environment in a short period of time with no secondary environmental risk especially on the waste activated sludge.

Background The increased production and use of chiral pesticides will enhance their exposure in the environment. Chiral pesticides typically exhibit varied biological effects among these enantiomers. Therefore, it is very essential to develop and validate chiral analytical methods to investigate their potential ecological risks from a stereoselective perspective. Current separation of pesticides enantiomers relies extensively on chiral stationary phases (CSPs), while the development of β-Cyclodextrin derivatives CSPs become the research focus due to their great modifiability and excellent chiral recognition capabilities. Results A novel chiral stationary phase, 3,5-dichlorophenylaminomethyl-6-phenylenediamine-β-cyclodextrin chemically bonded silica gel (MPDCDA), was successfully prepared. Based on that, a stereoselective HPLC-MS/MS method was developed and validated for the determination of tebuconazole enantiomers in Rana nigromaculata tadpoles. After extraction by QuEChERS, the tebuconazole enantiomers were completely separated with the resolutions of 1.63 using the mobile phase of methanol-water (70/30, v/v). Good linearity (r > 0.9990) for both enantiomers over a concentration range of 0.20–500.0 ng/mL was obtained with the accuracy ranged from 6.7 % to 9.3 % and the intra-day and inter-day precisions below 6.2 % at three quality control levels. The proposed method was successfully applied in evaluating the enantioselective bioaccumulation and elimination profiles of tebuconazole in tadpoles. At the tested conditions, there was no significantly enantioselective difference in the bioaccumulation process for S - tebuconazole and R -tebuconazole. However, the elimination process of tebuconazole enantiomers was enantioselective with R -tebuconazole preferentially degraded. Significance This work provided an accurate risk assessment of chiral pesticides to non-target aquatic organisms from a stereoselective perspective. These findings would deepen our understanding of the potential ecological risks of chiral pesticides on aquatic organisms and provide scientific support for the protection of aquatic organisms and their ecological environments, as well as sustainable development.
