In this paper, we successfully designed and constructed a ratiometric room temperature phosphorescent probe (CDs@SiO 2 –Rh6G) that can realize highly sensitive detection of nitrite in urine under the interference of ascorbic acid (AA) based on the triplet-to-singlet Fӧrster resonance energy transfer mechanism between silica-coated phosphorescent carbon dots and rhodamine 6G. This unique energy transfer mechanism is discussed in detail, and the interference of various factors on nitrite detection is systematically investigated. With the successful masking of AA by 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinooxy (4-OH-TEMPO), CDs@SiO 2 –Rh6G could accurately detect NO 2 − with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.242 μmol/L, which is much lower than that of the commercially available urinary nitrite test paper. The probe was tested on real urine samples—human, dog, and cat urine—and the results were highly consistent with those obtained by ion chromatography, with spike recoveries ranging from 96.5 % to 105.3 %. Since the green and yellow luminescence of the probe is visible to the naked eye, a visual analysis method based on the RGB values of smartphones was developed. This study presents a new strategy for constructing ratiometric room temperature phosphorescent probes based on a unique TS-FRET mechanism. Meanwhile, this research not only overcomes the quantitative limitations of current test strip detection methods but also lays the foundation for developing more sensitive and accurate clinical diagnostic tools for urinary tract infections.

The development of a catalyst with high efficiency and low metal leaching is highly essential for transition metal-based peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activators. In this study, a composite catalyst of CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles anchored on ZnO (CoFe 2 O 4 @ZnO) was successfully synthesized through coprecipitation coupled with calcination. Given that CoFe 2 O 4 and ZnO have opposing zeta potentials, their combination was strengthened by electrostatic forces. Moreover, the pH buffering environment provided by the ZnO carrier considerably reduced the degree of metal leaching; furthermore, the degree of aggregation of the CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles greatly decreased in the presence of ZnO, exposing more active sites for PMS activation. Consequently, a tetracycline (TC) removal rate of 96.5 % was achieved by CoFe 2 O 4 @ZnO within 10 min, with less than 0.5 % metal leaching, and the removal rates reached over 90 % over a wide range of pH values (3.0 11.0). Through the detection of reactive species, electrochemical analysis and comparison of catalyst components before and after the reaction, an activation mechanism for PMS mediated by CoFe 2 O 4 @ZnO was proposed, and SO 4 •− , 1 O 2 , and electron transfer played a dominant role in PMS activation for TC removal. HPLC MS analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed three main pathways for TC degradation, and the results of software prediction and hydroponic experiments with peas indicated a general reduction in the toxicity of intermediate products. This work provides valuable theoretical and technical insights into metal-based catalysts for PMS activation.

Ferrate (Fe(VI)), an emerging green oxidant and disinfectant in water treatment, faces challenges due to its limited reaction efficiency stemming from a highly electron-deficient state. To address this, we designed NiFe-Layered Double Hydroxides (NiFe-LDHs) with different spin states to enhance electron transfer efficiency in Fe(VI)-mediated advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). We hypothesized that fine-tuning the spin state of NiFe-LDHs could optimize the balance between adsorption capabilities and electronic structure regulation. Our experiments revealed that intermediate-spin NiFeLDH-1, with a magnetic moment of 0.67 μB, exhibited the best catalytic performance, achieving 100% phenol removal. The NiFeLDH-x/Fe(VI) system demonstrated a significant synergistic enhancement in degradation efficiency. In addition, NiFeLDH-1 showed excellent performance in stability and continuous flow experiments. This study unveils a novel correlation between spin polarization and catalytic efficiency, offering insights into the optimization of electrocatalysts for Fe(VI)-mediated AOPs. The findings suggest that spin state modulation is a promising strategy to enhance the electrocatalytic activity and stability of non-noble metal catalysts.

Photodynamic inactivation (PDI) is a promising non-thermal antimicrobial technology known for broad-spectrum efficacy and low resistance potential. However, conventional PDI face limitations in bactericidal efficacy due to the short-lived and poorly diffusing reactive oxygen species (ROS). This study proposes a novel food-grade PDI strategy that incorporates disodium 5′-inosinate (IMP) into a vitamin B2 (VB2)-mediated system, significantly enhancing H 2 O 2 production. Acting as an electron donor, IMP promotes type I photochemical reactions, enabling sustained H 2 O 2 generation and achieving >6 log CFU/mL inactivation of Bacillus safensis , a spoilage bacterium often overlooked in cooked meat products. Mechanistic analyses showed that H 2 O 2 oxidized key phospholipids in the cell membrane, increased permeability, caused membrane potential hyperpolarization and ion leakage, and ultimately disrupted multiple membrane domains. Moreover, this strategy also exhibited persistent antimicrobial activity, effectively delaying spoilage in cooked meat products stored at 4 °C and 25 °C. Overall, this study introduces a safe and effective non-thermal sterilization method with promising industrial potential and offers a novel pathway to enhance PDI efficacy via intensified type I ROS mechanisms.

Fungal biofilms, as self-produced extracellular polymeric substances that resist antifungal agents and immune defense, represent a major cause of treatment failure and recurrent infections. Therefore, it is of great importance to eradicate fungal biofilms to achieve efficient therapy. This study develops a synergistic reactive oxygen species (ROS)-enhanced strategy to eradicate Candida albicans biofilms by designing ultrasound-light dual-responsive nanohybrids (UCNP@CR). The system integrates thulium-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) with carbon nitride-coated surfaces (g-C 3 N 4 ) and polypyridine ruthenium complex (Ru) photosensitizers. In treatment, the dense fungal biofilm can be effectively loosened under ultrasound stimulation while ultrasound simultaneously triggers ROS production of UCNP@CR, collectively promoting irreversible destruction of biofilm and inward penetration of photosensitizer. Moreover, UCNP@CR exhibits strong fungal adhesion, while its g-C 3 N 4 -mediated enhanced metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) process of Ru under near-infrared light irradiation amplifies ROS generation, which leads to efficient eradication of fungal biofilms. As in vivo experimental evidence, UCNP@CR exhibits excellent antifungal efficacy in treating fungal biofilm-infected wounds in immunosuppressed male mice under ultrasound-light stimulation. These findings establish the ultrasound-assisted, ROS-enhanced synergistic strategy as a promising approach against fungal biofilm infections and provide diverse perspective for managing other biofilm-related infectious diseases.

Photocatalytic technology offers significant potential for pollutant remediation through efficient, cost-effective mineralization but faces inherent limitations, including catalyst agglomeration and rapid charge recombination. To address these challenges, we developed activated carbon-modified porous graphitic carbon nitride (APCN) synthesized through the co-polycondensation of dicyandiamide with NH4Cl and fir-wood-derived activated carbon (AC). The incorporated AC effectively prevented the agglomeration of carbon nitride frameworks, thereby enhancing the specific surface area (SBET) of APCN. This matrix was subsequently composited with hydrothermally prepared (1T/2H) mixed-phase MoS2through ultrasonication, forming a MoS2/APCN heterostructure. Characterizations including Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and N2adsorption–desorption isotherms (BET) confirmed that MoS2was successfully loaded onto APCN via an ultrasonic synthesis method. The composite exhibited outstanding photocatalytic activity, degrading 95.5% RhB in 40 min (pH = 7) and 97.4% in 25 min (pH = 3.5), with 87.3% efficiency retention after four cycles (pH = 7). Crucially, AC enhanced visible-light absorption and functioned as an electron-mediating component. Photoelectrochemical analyses and radical-trapping experiments confirmed a direct Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism, wherein conductive AC accelerates electron transport and suppresses carrier recombination. This study establishes both an efficient RhB degradation photocatalyst and a sustainable strategy for valorizing agricultural waste in advanced material design.

Establishing a simple and consistent strategy to adjust the photocatalyst surface to improve the photocatalytic performance is crucial but remains challenging. Herein, a photocatalyst of TiO 2 -Q-Pd is obtained through one-step quenching of TiO 2 (derived from NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)) into an aqueous solution of sodium tetrachloropalladium, which displayed a significant improvement in photocatalytic activity, achieving 97 % tetracycline degradation within 60 min and 95 % mineralization at 5 h. The mineralization reaction rate (0.6321 h −1 ) was 2.75 times that of the commercial TiO 2 . Our findings show that quenching leads to the creation of numerous zigzag surfaces and the near-surface palladium atom doping, therefore adjusting the chemical environment of Ti, which accelerates electron-hole pair separation and transfer, and thereby improves the photocatalytic performance. This finding introduces a novel approach to activating metal oxide catalysts derived from MOFs and expands the role of quenching chemistry in catalytic processes.

Electronic properties of active sites profoundly influence catalytic production of value-added chemicals; however, rational description and modulation is still a significant challenge. Herein, we propose an effective metal-ion-chelation strategy guided by density functional theory prediction and in situ Raman observation to structurally tailor and quantitatively correlate the electronic properties of active sites in ionic liquid. Comprehensive characterizations and theoretical calculations, in combination with electronic properties–performance correlations, reveal the electronic peculiarity of nitrogen and oxygen centers can be controllably restructured for remarkable improvement of catalytic performance at near-ambient condition. The turnover frequency is increased by two folds with deactivation rate suppressed by more than one half, while the kilogram-scaled recycling pilot achieves similar performance for the probe methacrolein synthesis. This strategy further exhibits excellent applicability and tolerance in other substrates with representative functional groups. Our work expresses the significance of electronic properties and provides a valid regulation approach for ionic liquid catalysis.

Aqueous organic redox flow batteries (AORFBs) represent an advancing class of electrochemical energy storage systems showing considerable promise for large-scale grid integration due to their unique aqueous organic chemistry. However, the use of small-molecule active materials in AORFBs is significantly limited by the issue of stability and crossover. To address these challenges, we designed a high-water-solubility polymer cathode material, P-T-S, which features a polyvinylimidazole backbone functionalized with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) and sulfonate groups. P-T-S exhibits a solubility of 34 Ah L−1in water and 31 Ah L−1in 1.0 M NaCl aqueous solution (NaClaq). When paired with methyl viologen to assemble a pH-neutral AORFB with a theoretical capacity of 15 Ah L−1, the system exhibits a material utilization rate of 92.0%, an average capacity retention rate of 99.74% per cycle (99.74% per hour), and an average Coulombic efficiency of 98.69% over 300 consecutive cycles at 30 mA cm−2. This work provides a new design strategy for polymer materials for high-performance AORFBs.

Ferrate(VI) (Fe(VI)) is a powerful oxidant for wastewater treatment, but its use is hindered by electron transfer limitations. To address this, we designed a NiFe-layered double hydroxide-carbon nanotube (NiFe-LDH-CNT) hybrid photocatalyst. The design is based on the hypothesis that incorporating conductive CNTs can enhance interfacial charge-transfer capability, thereby promote Fe(VI) activation. Under visible light, this catalyst enhances Fe(VI) performance by facilitating the formation of reactive high-valent iron intermediates, accompanied by the generation of reactive oxygen species. Compared with pristine NiFe-LDH, the CNT-integrated composite exhibits improved charge separation and accelerated interfacial electron transport, resulting in enhanced pollutant degradation efficiency. In addition, the catalyst remains stable and effective over time, even in complex water environments. This approach offers a practical way to enhance Fe(VI)-based water treatment processes.

This study successfully fabricated a WO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 (WO 3 /ZIS) composite photocatalyst via electrostatic self-assembly under acidic conditions (pH = 4.1). The effect of composite ratio on the material's structure and optoelectronic properties was systematically investigated using multiple characterization techniques, including XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and electrochemical measurements. Photocatalytic mechanism studies were conducted using fluvastatin as a model pharmaceutical pollutant. Results confirm the formation of a Z-scheme heterojunction in the WO 3 /ZIS composite. Increasing the proportion of ZnIn 2 S 4 during electrostatic self-assembly effectively enlarges the specific surface area, enhances visible-light absorption, and suppresses the recombination of photogenerated e − -h + pairs, thereby significantly improving photocatalytic performance. The WO 3 /ZIS-30 % composite material exhibited the most stable structure, the largest specific surface area, and the optimal light absorption capacity and charge carrier separation efficiency. Its degradation efficiency for fluvastatin reached 59.81 %, representing a 25.88 % improvement over WO 3 . Radical trapping experiments verify the simultaneous generation of ·OH and ·O 2 − radicals, and the concentrations of ·O 2 − and ·OH were 1.68 × 10 −5 mol/L and 1.61 × 10 −5 mol/Land their synergistic action considerably strengthens the oxidative power of the system. The Z-scheme heterojunction formed by electrostatic self-assembly facilitates spatial separation of photo generated charges and enables multi-radical oxidation, collectively boosting photocatalytic efficiency. This work provides a new strategy for designing highly efficient and stable photocatalysts suited for removing pharmaceutical contaminants from water.

In view of the increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that disturb the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), the repair of diabetic bone defects remains a great challenge. Herein, a factor-free hydrogel is reported with ROS scavenging and responsive degradation properties for enhanced diabetic bone healing. These hydrogels contain ROS-cleavable thioketal (TK) linkers and ultraviolet (UV)-responsive norbornene (NB) groups conjugated with 8-arm PEG macromers, which are formed via UV crosslinking-mediated gelation. Upon reacting with high levels of ROS in the bone defect microenvironment, ROS-cleavable TK linkers are destroyed, allowing the responsive degradation of hydrogels, which promotes the migration of BMSCs. Moreover, ROS levels are reduced through hydrogel-mediated ROS scavenging to reverse BMSC differentiation from adipogenic to osteogenic phenotype. As such, a favorable microenvironment is created after simultaneous ROS scavenging and hydrogel degradation, leading to the effective repair of bone defects in diabetic mouse models, even without the addition of growth factors. Thus, this study presents a responsive hydrogel platform that regulates ROS scavenging and stromal degradation in bone engineering.
