The authors describe the use of white-light emitting upconversion nanoparticles (WL-UCNPs) for visual detection of the pesticide thiram. The method is demonstrated to undergo a better discernable color change upon target binding. The WL-UCNPs are modified with the lead(II)-dithizone complex which acts as the energy acceptor and recognition unit. This leads to quenching of the blue (475 nm) and green (545 nm) emissions of the WL-UCNPs, while the red emission (650 nm) remains unaffected. Upon addition of thiram, the quenched emissions are recovered, with a linear signal increase in the range from 2 nM to 20 nM of thiram and a limit of detection of 0.26 nM. The nanoprobe was further integrated into a test paper for visual detection. The concentration-dependent color change that varies from red to cyan and bluish violet and then to white can be visually distinguished.
Schematic presentation of a white-light emissive upconversion nanoparticle based test paper for color-discernable detection of the pesticide thiram. The test stripe exhibits a concentration-dependent color variation spanning from red, cyan, to bluish violet, and at last to white.

Thiram has been widely used in agriculture and may invades the food chain , posing a threat to human health. In this research, a label-free electrochemical cell-based biosensor was presented for in vitro toxicity assessment of thiram. HepG2 cells were cultured on poly- l [email protected] nano-flowers functionalized indium tin oxide coated glass electrode ( [email protected] /ITO) to serve as biorecognition elements. AuNFs were electrodeposited on ITO to provide an enlarged specific surface area and benefited the output signal amplification. PLL was selected as an effective biocompatible coating material to facilitate cell adhesion and proliferation, thereby realizing one-step recording of electrochemical signals from thiram-treated cells. With the aid of the differential pulse voltammetry method, the fabricated biosensor was applied to assess the cytotoxicity of thiram. Results showed that the cytotoxicity measured by the fabricated biosensor exhibited a linear relationship related to thiram concentration ranging from 5 to 50 μM with a detection limit of 2.23 μM. The IC 50 of thiram obtained by the biosensor was 29.5 μM, which was close to that of conventional MTT assay (30.8 μM). The effects of thiram on HepG2 cells were also investigated via SEM and flow cytometry. Meanwhile, the proposed biosensor was used to evaluate the toxicity of thiram in fruit samples. Results indicated that the toxicity of thiram cannot be ignored even at a low residual concentration in food (≤5 mg/kg). In conclusion, the developed sensor showed excellent sensitivity, stability, and reliability, which provided a great capacity for the convenient toxicity evaluation of thiram residue in food.

Modifying nanoparticle assembly can alter the electric field strength within “hot spots,” offering promise for enhancing surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance. In this work, by modifying the surface of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) with glutathione (GSH), a pH-responsive substrate, Ag-GSH nanoparticles (AGGNPs), was prepared. Under acidic conditions, hydrogen bonds form between protonated GSH molecules, inducing aggregation of AGGNPs and causing a red shift in the absorption peak. The SERS enhancement factor (EF) increased from 5.6 × 10 5 to 1.36 × 10⁶ and exhibited a good linear relationship with pH. In practical apple sample detection, the natural acidic environment of the fruit pulp enabled SERS self-optimization. Without external acid addition, the signal for thiram at 1383 cm −1 was significantly enhanced, achieving a minimum detection concentration of 10 −11 M. This approach effectively provides a novel pathway for developing highly efficient SERS sensing strategies and offers fresh insights for expanding SERS applications in agricultural detection.

As an emerging technique for rapid detection, Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has received much practical attention. Here, we report a uniformly distributed silver nanoparticles on well-defined tungsten oxide nanoflakes hierarchical nanostructures (Ag/WO 3-x ) as flexible solid SERS substrate. The vertically aligned Ag/WO 3-x nanoflakes were prepared by in situ redox reaction without reductant additives, ensuring the clean surface and free of extra interferences with good signal-to-noise ratio. Using rhodamine 6G (R6G) as probe molecule, the enhancement factor of developed Ag/WO 3-x nanoflakes SERS substrate was found to be high as 2.41 × 10 7 with an ultrasensitive detection concentration of 10 -12 M. Additionally, Ag/WO 3-x nanoflakes SERS substrate exhibited good reproducibility and long-time stability. Meanwhile, the pesticide thiram with a 1.3 pM limit of detection (LOD) can be readily determined via developed SERS substrate. To illustrate the potential practical value of the prepared substrates, 2.4 ppb spiked thiram on apple peel surface were both successfully detected. Notably, the developed SERS substrates could be cut into small pieces for detecting trace chemical or biological molecules and the flexible utilization of substrates would be improved dramatically. As a result, vertically aligned Ag/WO 3-x nanoflakes with well-defined shape and hierarchical structure have great potential as solid SERS substrate in the field of fast detection and trace analysis.

The detection of trace thiram is critically important due to its environmental persistence and biotoxicity. Conventional pesticide residue analysis faces fundamental limitations in sensitivity and accuracy due to low analyte recovery efficiency during sampling, making surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy an ideal solution for trace thiram monitoring. In this study, we developed a high-performance SERS substrate based on in-situ synthesized silver nanoparticle-decorated indium tin oxide (AgNPs/ITO) glass, fabricated via cyclic voltammetry electrochemical deposition. The substrate demonstrated exceptional sensitivity for standard probe molecules such as R6G, achieving an enhancement factor (EF) of up to 8.62 × 10 6 with excellent signal uniformity and universality. For pesticide detection, the substrate exhibited a remarkably low LOD of 0.55 μg/L for thiram and enabled effective in-situ identification of thiram residues on vegetable leaf surfaces, demonstrating robust capability for practical pesticide residue analysis.

In this study, a rapid, stable, and sensitive colorimetric/surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) method was developed based on a polyvinyl alcohol‐decorated Au nanoparticle (PVA–Au) colloid for thein situ detection of thiram residues in fruits and vegetables. The PVA–Au colloid acted as both a colorimetric and SERS sensor. The colorimetric detection of thiram is based on the color change and absorption band shift caused by aggregation of the PVA–Au colloid. The stable and controllable colorimetric process has been verified. The influence of the media pH and reaction time on the aggregation of the PVA–Au colloid were also investigated. The reflectance and SERS spectra of the thiram samples were acquired and analyzed. The limit of the colorimetric detection of thiram in apples, pears, and vegetables was 4.62, 7.83, and 10.74 ppb (μg kg−1), respectively, which is well below the maximum residue level of 5 ppm (mg kg−1) set by the National Food Safety Standard of China and the US Environmental Protection Agency. Meanwhile, rapid, in situ, and non-invasive SERS detection was used to acquire SERS spectra of thiram residues based on the localized surface plasmonic resonance effect of the PVA–Au colloid. The naked-eye visible and stable colorimetric detection is suitable for the rapid detection of pesticide residues in a large number of plant samples, while the positive results could be further confirmed and verified by SERS. The results demonstrate that this colorimetric/SERS method has great potential to detect thiram residues in real foods and improve the detection efficiency.

Abuse and inappropriate disposal of the pesticide thiram can be hazardous to human health and sustainable development of the environment. Herein, we designed a peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence-based nanosensing system composed of bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)oxalate (TCPO), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and specific-sized gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) for highly sensitive, rapid, and selective detection of thiram pesticide via a chemiluminescence “on–off” phenomenon. The nanoscale sensing system produced strong chemiluminescence through excited specific-sized Au NPs by the energy transfer from peroxyoxalate chemically; however, the chemiluminescence was very sensitive to thiram and decreased gradually because the discrete energy level of Au NPs changed after interacting with thiram to form an aggregated complex through intense Au–S bonds. The proposed chemiluminescence-based nanosensor could achieve the determination of thiram with a sensitive and low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.35 nM, within a detection time of 40 s. The nanoscale sensing system reported herein was simple, rapid, low cost, and highly sensitive and selective for sulfhydryl-containing environmentally hazardous substances like thiram pesticide residues in fruits, vegetables, milk, and environmental water, promoting the development and application of nanomaterial-based chemiluminescence sensing in the fields of food and environment safety monitoring.

Magnetic materials have been widely used for constructing substrate in surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing due to the magnetic responsibility. Here, we reported a facile and effective approach to construct multi-functional SERS substrate based on assembling Ag nanoparticles (NPs) on porous Fe microspheres. The porous Fe microspheres were prepared through hydrogen reduction of Fe 2 O 3 NPs with porous structure, in which the size and morphology of Fe could be well controlled. The surface of Fe was grafted with amino group, and then decorated with Ag NPs. The surface area and pore size of Fe microsphere were characterized by nitrogen adsorption and desorption. The Fe@Ag nanocomposite illustrated a good SERS activity. Furthermore, this substrate could be used for pesticide monitoring by portable Raman spectrometer. Especially, the porous Fe microsphere could adsorb analyte from target sample and the Fe@Ag could be concentrated by magnetic force to amplify the SERS signal for thiram detection.

The development of sensitive fluorescence sensors and efficient preparation of samples is a challenge in the detection of pesticides in complex samples. In this study, multicolor nitrogen dots (M-Ndots) were synthesised via microwave irradiation at 140 °C for 10 min with 5-amino-1H-tetrazole and p-phenylenediamine as precursors, which have a high fluorescence quantum yield of up to 31%. Furthermore, the M-Ndots were employed as fluorescence sensors for pesticide detection by being combined with a gas membrane separation device, to eliminate the interference from the complex sample matrix. In this process, the M-Ndots were used for sensing thiram and chlorpyrifos through their affinities to Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ , respectively. Because thiram could decompose into volatile CS 2 , its derivate was sensed using the fluorescence of M-Ndots via a complexation reaction with Cu 2+ . Chlorpyrifos, due to its volatility, can reduce the Fe 3+ ion by inhibiting the activity of acetylcholinesterase , which produces H 2 O 2 to oxidise Fe 2+ . In a real application, the time consumption for 96 samples was less than 30 min in one run of the gas membrane separation device. The recoveries for thiram and chlorpyrifos ranged from 90.0% to 115.0%, and the analytical results were validated using LC-MS/MS methods, with relative errors ranging from −7.4% to 10.1%.

An aggregation or assembly of Ag triangular nanoplates (Ag TNPs) can cause dramatic changes in their optical properties, which is widely used in applications in the field of sensing. The assembly forms of nanoparticles are crucial for obtaining sensitive sensing signals, but it is unknown what kind of assembly dominates the aggregated Ag TNPs in aqueous solutions. Herein, using thiram-induced Ag TNP aggregation as a model, six different assembly models were established, including three planar (side-by-side, side-to-tip, and tip-to-tip) assemblies and three tridimensional (plane-to-plane, plane-to-tip, and plane-to-side) assemblies. The corresponding optical properties were then investigated. Both theoretical and experimental findings indicate that three-dimensional assemblies, especially plane-to-plane assembly, dominate the Ag TNPs aggregation solution, causing a blue shift of the absorption spectrum. Analysis of charge distribution patterns in Ag TNPs indicates that such a blue shift is caused by the electrostatic repulsive force in plane-to-plane assembly. Thus, we propose a simple colorimetric method for thiram detection using Ag TNPs as an indicator. The method exhibits a selective and sensitive response to thiram with a limit of detection of 0.13 μM in the range of 0.2–0.5 μM, as well as excellent performance in real samples like wheat. Keywords:aggregation;Ag triangular nanoplates;LSPR;colorimetric detection;thiram

A core–shell QDs@mSiO 2 @y-AuNCs nanoprobe was prepared, and a new ratiometric fluorescent sensor for thiram detection was developed. The mechanism of thiram sensing was investigated using FTIR, surface-enhanced Raman, XPS spectra, etc. The sensing of thiram was mainly ascribed to the formation of Au–S bonds between thiram and Au atoms on y-AuNCs surface, resulting in the dissociation of 11-MUA ligand from the y-AuNCs surface and the charge transfer between thiram and y-AuNCs. In the ratiometric fluorescence detection of thiram based on QDs@mSiO 2 @y-AuNCs, a linear range of 0.5–60 ng/mL was obtained with a LOD of 0.19 ng/mL. Compared with the fluorescence detection based on y-AuNCs, the ratiometric fluorescence detection of thiram demonstrated 3-fold enhanced sensitivity. The improvement was ascribed to two aspects: the fluorescence emission of y-AuNCs was enhanced after they were loaded onto the QDs@mSiO 2 nanoparticles; the ratiometric detection mode provided more precise sensing. The detection of thiram can be completed immediately after mixing the nanoprobe with thiram. Good recoveries of thiram in apple and pear samples were achieved. All the above results demonstrated the high potential of this method in practical applications. Graphical abstract

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a novel spectroscopic technique that enables the identification of analytes through analysis of their unique chemical signatures. Its high sensitivity, specificity, and rapid response make it a valuable tool in a range of fields, including biological detection, food safety, and environmental monitoring. However, traditional SERS nanoparticle substrates are susceptible to instability and agglomeration. In this study, Ta4C3 MXene/gold nanostar (AuNSs) hybrids were prepared as SERS substrates. By optimizing the experimental conditions of AuNSs, the optimal preparation method for the Ta4C3 MXene/AuNSs composite structure was identified. The addition of MXene to the Ta4C3 MXene/AuNSs hybrid substrates was found to enhance the sensitivity of the composite for Raman detection, as evaluated using 4-aminothiophenol (PATP) as a Raman molecule. This improvement in sensitivity is attributed to the enhanced electromagnetic properties of the hybrid substrates, which facilitate more efficient charge transfer and enhance the Raman scattering process. The limit of detection (LOD) of Ta4C3 MXene/AuNSs is 10–9 M for PATP and 10–7 M for thiram solutions. In addition, good reproducibility and spatial uniformity were obtained for the Raman signals of Ta4C3 MXene/AuNSs. Furthermore, Ta4C3 MXene/AuNSs were combined with filter paper to create paper-based SERS substrates that could be used for detection. By directly wiping the apple peel and subsequently detecting the thiram residues using Ta4C3 MXene/AuNSs, the level of detection of thiram residues on the peel surface was down to 7.8 ng/cm2.
