SiCf/SiC-Ti3SiC2 composites with different Ti3SiC2 contents were prepared by slurry impregnation and in-situ reaction in this study. Microstructure analysis showed that the matrix of the coposites was mainly composed of Ti3SiC2, SiC, TiSi2 and little amount of residual Si and C. The composites achieved the highest mechanical performance when the Ti3SiC2 content was the highest. The high-temperature oxidation results indicated that even after 100 h of oxidation at 1300°C, the bending strength of the composite material can still maintain 83% of its initial strength compared to other composites. This may be due to the formation of SiO2 and TiO2 oxide layers by partial oxidation of Ti3SiC2 in the matrix, which will protect the composite material from further oxidation.

To address the critical limitation of insufficient high-temperature structural stability in traditional formaldehyde-resorcinol aerogels for thermal protection applications, this study designed and fabricated a high-silica fiber felt-reinforced phenolic aerogel composite capable of in situ ceramization. The thermal insulation performance, structural stability, mechanical properties, and oxidation resistance mechanism after heat treatment at 1000 °C for 600 s were systematically investigated. Results demonstrated tunable density (0.398–0.629 g·cm−3), low room-temperature thermal conductivity (0.0414 W·m−1·K−1), and a stabilized back temperature of 408.6 °C during butane torch flame testing. After high-temperature treatment, the composite series exhibited a minimum volume shrinkage of 13.9% and a maximum mass retention of 77.6%. Specifically, the compressive strength and specific strength of the HS/C-75 sample reached 4.39 and 1.96 times those of the HS/C-0 sample, respectively. Further analysis revealed that the synergistic effect between the skeletal support of high-silica fibers and the in situ-formed ceramic phase effectively suppressed thermal shrinkage and improved oxidation resistance, achieving an optimized balance between thermal insulation and mechanical integrity. This work provides a theoretical foundation and viable technical pathway for developing advanced thermal protection materials with enhanced stability and reliability.

Dense Ti 3 AlC 2 and Ti 3 SiC 2 ceramics were fabricated via confined pulsed current sintering using their respective powders synthesized by molten salt method. The densification kinetics, microstructural evolution, and mechanical properties were systematically investigated. Results indicated that Ti 3 AlC 2 exhibited lower thermal stability, being susceptible to decomposition and Al exudation, whereas Ti 3 SiC 2 remained highly stable. Densification was primarily governed by diffusion creep and grain boundary sliding, yielding apparent activation energies of 148 and 200 kJ·mol 1 for Ti 3 AlC 2 and Ti 3 SiC 2 , respectively. Subsequent grain growth was controlled by mixed grain boundary and lattice diffusion, with respective activation energies of 52–63 and 124–139 kJ·mol 1 . These significantly higher activation energies in Ti 3 SiC 2 fundamentally reflected its rigid Ti-Si covalent-like bonds compared to the weaker Ti-Al metallic bonds. Dictated by this intrinsic bonding difference, the Ti 3 SiC 2 ceramics achieved a higher maximum flexural strength of 740 MPa and predominantly failed via intergranular fracture, whereas Ti 3 AlC 2 reached 573 MPa and primarily exhibited transgranular cleavage.

Almost fully dense B 4 C-TiB 2 -SiC composite ceramics with high flexure strength and good fracture toughness were fabricated through in-situ reaction between B 4 C, Ti 3 SiC 2 and Si using spark plasma sintering method at a relatively low temperature of 1650 °C. The intergranular and intragranular structure containing nanoparticles with different phase were introduced into the composite ceramic. The nano and micro particles in the microstructure formed a multi-scale particles reinforced structure. The refined matrix grains and the multi-scale reinforcing particles had a synergetic effect on improving the mechanical properties of the composite ceramics. As a result, B 4 C-TiB 2 -SiC composite ceramic with 30 wt% (TiB 2 + SiC) exhibits low density and optimum mechanical properties with high flexural strength of 531.2 MPa, good fracture toughness of 5.77 MPa m 1/2 and moderate micro-hardness of 28.6 GPa.

In this investigation, we have employed a novel approach to fabricate β–Sialon/Ti(C, N) composites through the nitridation treatment of Ti 3 SiC 2 powder. At temperatures ranging from 1373 to 1773 K, the reaction process was subjected to a comprehensive analysis to explore the transformation of phase and microstructure. The findings unequivocally highlight the influence of α–Al 2 O 3 presence and the high specific surface area of Ti 3 SiC 2 powder, resulting in distinctive phase and structural evolutions post nitridation, distinctly different from those observed in bulk Ti 3 SiC 2 . The β–Sialon/Ti(C, N) composites produced via this innovative method exhibit uniform local chemical composition and meticulous regulation of grain morphology. Moreover, the synthesis mechanism of β–Sialon/Ti(C, N) composites under nitrogen ambiance was thoroughly discussed. This straightforward approach has the potential for extensive–scale synthesis of β–Sialon/Ti(C, N) composites, offering promising avenues for their application in developing high–performance refractories or structural ceramics tailored to withstand severe high–temperature environments.

Carbon fiber/phenolic resin composite (CF/Ph) is widely used for the large-area thermal protection of hypersonic vehicles due to its excellent processing characteristics and performance advantages. As the thermal protection material, CF/Ph must possess outstanding ablation resistance and robust load-bearing capacity to ensure the structural integrity and shape stability of hypersonic vehicles. However, so far, research on the in-situ high-temperature mechanical performance and oxidation resistance mechanism of the CF/Ph is lacking. In this study, the high-temperature mechanical performance of Ti 3 SiC 2 modified carbon fiber/boron phenolic resin ceramizable composite (Ti 3 SiC 2 -CF/BPRC) was evaluated using in-situ high-temperature bending test. High-temperature microscopy and in-situ X-ray diffraction were used to obtain the in-situ micromorphology evolution and phase composition at high temperatures. The combination of in-situ characterizations and ex-situ characterizations (microstructure and phase analysis after high-temperature testing) elucidated the in-situ oxidation resistance mechanism of Ti 3 SiC 2 -CF/BPRC. The results demonstrate that Ti 3 SiC 2 -CF/BPRC exhibits excellent oxidation resistance and high-temperature bending performance, with a residual yield of 29.2% at 1300 °C and a bending strength of 25.1 MPa at 1200 °C, attributed to the oxygen consumption, oxygen diffusion inhibition, carbon fixation, and endothermic reactions of Ti 3 SiC 2 , along with the formation of a Ti-B-O-C-Si multiphase ceramic layer. This work provides critical insights into the in-situ high-temperature oxidation mechanisms of ceramizable composite.
