Study on the erosion reducing mechanisms of microencapsulated hydroxyl silicone oil with a hybrid shell

Xueyang Li,Rui Wu,Zichao Li,Guo Chen,Hanbin Zhou,Yucheng Zhang,Zhenggang Xiao

The erosion of barrel weapons is becoming increasingly severe with the application of high-energy gun propellants, which significantly reduces the service life. To address this issue, a type of microcapsules with hydroxyl silicone oil and urea–formaldehyde (UF) mixed with nano TiO 2 was prepared. The morphology, element distribution, thermal stability, and chemical composition were characterized by SEM, EDS, TG, and FT-IR, respectively. The results reveal that the structure of microcapsules is intact and nano TiO 2 was successfully embedded in the shell. Erosion simulation test was introduced to synthesize the erosion reducing by microcapsules. The erosion reducing rate could reach 11.63% when 2 wt% of microcapsules were added to triple-base gun propellants. And a deposit layer could be observed on the surface of erosion tubes. However, the limited addition of nanoparticles fails to provide effective protection.

Enhanced CO2 desorption from monoethanolamine solution using TiO(OH)2-modified diatomite catalyst

Pan Zhang,Zhongfa Zha,Jiawen Yang,Xinbo Wang,Jianwen Song,Shuming Du,Liwen Li,Kun Zhao,Dong Fu,Lemeng Wang,Jun Ke,Pengfei Qu

High energy consumption during CO₂ desorption remains a critical bottleneck limiting the industrial application of monoethanolamine (MEA)-based carbon capture technologies. To address this issue, a novel high-efficiency catalyst, the 1:4-Ti@D composite catalyst based on diatomite and TiO(OH) 2 surface modification, was developed. Catalytic performance was evaluated in 30 wt% MEA solution at 90 °C. Compared with non-catalytic processes, the 1:4-Ti@D catalyst enhanced total CO₂ desorption amount by 46.2 % and maximum desorption rate by 125.1 %, while reducing desorption energy consumption by 39.2 %. Notably, it maintained stable catalytic efficiency after 10 consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, confirming its durability for industrial use. The physicochemical characteristics of the catalysts were comprehensively elucidated through various multi-dimensional characterization techniques. The experimental findings revealed that the synergistic effect of TiO(OH) 2 and diatomite substantially augmented the surface acid site density, while the optimized mesoporous structure facilitated efficient reactant transport, thereby underpinning the catalyst's exceptional performance. By the study of desorption mechanism, the stronger interaction between Ti and O of reactants can lead easier H 2 O and RNHCOO - absorption and activation. Moreover, an assessment of the catalyst's impact on thermal and oxidation degradation as well as the corrosion rate of MEA indicated minimal influence on amine degradation and corrosion processes. This work provides a new strategy for developing low-cost, high-stability clay-based catalysts and offers technical support for advancing energy-efficient industrial carbon capture systems.

Zero temperature coefficient microwave alumina ceramics via TiO₂ doping and post sinter annealing

Xiao Yuting,Appiah Millicent,Ullah Burhan,Yang Yixin,Kaplan Wayne D.,Tan Daniel Q.

Alumina (Al₂O₃) is a promising candidate for microwave dielectric ceramics due to its exceptional quality factor (Qf ~ 333,000 GHz). This study investigates the influence of additions of titania (TiO₂) and annealing treatments on the dielectric properties of polycrystalline Al₂O₃. The dielectric properties of Al₂O₃-x wt% TiO₂ (x = 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10) were evaluated after various heat treatment conditions. The optimal composition, Al₂O₃-7.5 wt% TiO₂, achieved notable properties when sintered at 1400 °C for 8 h: a relative permittivity (ε r ) of 10.73 and a quality factor-frequency product (Qf) of 126,347 GHz at 13.814 GHz. Specifically, subsequent annealing at 1000 °C for 5 h adjusted the temperature coefficient of frequency ( \(\:{\tau}_{f}\) ) to + 1.25 ppm/°C, near zero. The study reveals that the thermal treatment induces the decomposition of Al₂TiO₅ into Al₂O₃ and TiO₂, accompanied by titanium redistribution. Characterization using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and dielectric measurements established correlations between the microstructure and properties. This work provides a scalable framework for designing ultra-stable millimeter-wave ceramics, particularly for 5G/6G resonators and satellite communication systems, where minimal signal delay and thermal drift are critical.

Controlled hydrothermal growth of uniform rutile TiO 2 nanorod arrays for memristive applications

Zhiyuan Wang,Xiaohe Zhang,Yong Yang,Xiaobin Zhong,Suping Jia,Zongsheng Zhang,Yuan Gao,Junjie Guo,Xiaoping Han

Synthesis of highly uniform rutile TiO 2 nanorod arrays has long been a priority for fabricating the high-performance memristors, given its great potential as active-layer materials in memristive devices. Herein, a controllable hydrothermal synthesis of highly uniform rutile TiO 2 nanorod arrays on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates is presented. Through systematic investigations, it is revealed that the highly uniform rutile TiO 2 nanorod arrays are obtained via a 3-hour hydrothermal synthesis at 160 °C on vertical FTO substrates, postannealing at 450 °C for 1 hour, followed by 25-minute ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The obtained TiO 2 nanorod arrays exhibit excellent substrate adhesion and pinhole-free morphology, with well-defined nanorod dimensions (an average diameter of 171 nm and a length of 2.44 μm) and high crystallinity (an average crystallite size of 16.66 nm). Using such nanorod arrays as the active layers, the Ag/TiO 2 /FTO memristive devices demonstrate remarkable resistive switching characteristics: (i) the ratio of high resistance state (HRS) and low resistance state (LRS) reaches 17.7, and (ii) the retention time is predicted to be more than 10 years. Current-voltage analysis indicates that the resistive switching behavior follows a synergistic combination of ohmic conduction and space-charge-limited current (SCLC) mechanisms. The current work offers valuable guidelines for structure-property optimization in highly uniform rutile TiO 2 nanorod array films, demonstrating their promising applications in high-performance memristive devices.

Glutaraldehyde assisted synthesis of collagen derivative modified Fe3+/TiO2 nanocomposite and their enhanced photocatalytic activity

Chongyi Li,Feng Xue,Enyong Ding,Xiaoling He

A unique organic–inorganic hybrid nanocomposite was designed and synthesized by chemically anchoring the cationic collagen-based derivatives onto the surface of Fe 3+ /TiO 2 nanospheres for the significant enhancement in photocatalytic activity under the visible light irradiation. The NMR analysis suggested the successful fabrication of cationic collagen-g-PDMC as grafted materials. In addition, the chemical structures, morphologies and properties of these samples were systematically characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrum, ultra violet–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and photoluminescence (PL). And obtained results clearly demonstrated that Fe 3+ ions diffusing into TiO 2 lattice could be responsible for slightly reducing the average diameter of nanospheres to about 125   nm, promoting phase transition from anatase to rutile to some extent and extending the light harvesting range into visible region markedly. Meanwhile, the achievement that collagen-g-PDMC molecules had been covalently immobilized onto the surface of Fe 3+ /TiO 2 nanoparticles was also well supported by the information acquired. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activities of all the as-prepared products were carefully evaluated by adopting photocatalytic decoloration of methyl orange (MO) solution under the solar direct irradiation, and the sample CFT-3 performed the best in the photocatalytic degradation process, which was mainly attributed to the energetic synergistic effect brought about by Fe 3+ ions doping and collagen-g-PDMC molecules immobilized on the surface.

In-situ synthesis of novel plate-like Co(OH)2 co-catalyst decorated TiO2 nanosheets with efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution activity

Hao Xu,Songsong Li,Lei Ge,Changcun Han,Yangqin Gao,Dongsheng Dai

Efficient separation of photo-generated electrons and holes is a crucial aspect for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution . Herein, novel plate-like Co(OH) 2 decorated TiO 2 nanosheets for photocatalytic water splitting were synthesized by a facile in-situ synthetic method. The results of X-ray diffractometry (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV–Vis diffusion reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicate the successfully incorporation of Co(OH) 2 co-catalysts onto the surface of TiO 2 nanosheet photocatalysts . Further photocatalytic hydrogen evolution experiments illustrate that all Co(OH) 2 decorated TiO 2 samples show higher rate of hydrogen production performance than pure TiO 2 sample and the composite sample with Co(OH) 2 loading amount of 0.5mol% presents the highest photocatalytic hydrogen production activity of 746.93 μmol g −1 ·h −1 . It is indicated that plate-like Co(OH) 2 particle act as an electron collector, which leads to photo-generated electrons transfer from TiO 2 to Co(OH) 2 , and therefore enhance the photocatalytic activity . Based on above results, a possible mechanism is proposed and further verified by surface photovoltage spectra (SPV).

Electron density engineering in Pd/H-TiO2 catalysts for enhanced photocatalytic CO2 to formic acid

Ruijie Ma,Huimin Gao,Jinpeng Zhang,Jieying Jing,Wen-Ying Li

Photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to formic acid (HCOOH) offers a sustainable pathway for carbon utilization, yet its efficiency is fundamentally limited by poor CO 2 adsorption and rapid electron-hole recombination in conventional photocatalysts. To address this challenge, a series of Pd-loaded hydrogenated TiO 2 catalysts (x wt%Pd/H-TiO 2 ) were developed through a synergistic hydrogen reduction-impregnation strategy, aiming to regulate the electron density of Pd active sites and enhance interfacial charge separation. Systematic characterization revealed that increasing Pd loading (0.6–1.4 wt%) effectively trapped photogenerated electrons, suppressing recombination losses and elevating electron density at Pd sites. Combined with optimized CO 2 adsorption capacity (0.178 mmol·g −1 ) and accelerated charge transfer, the 1.0 wt%Pd/H-TiO 2 catalyst achieved a HCOOH production rate of 14.14 mmol·g cat −1 ·h −1 under mild conditions (30 °C, 2.0 MPa, 4.57 mW·cm −2 ), outperforming most reported TiO 2 -based systems. Mechanistic studies further demonstrated a strong correlation between Pd-induced electronic effects and multi-electron CO 2 activation kinetics. This work provides a scalable catalyst design paradigm for balancing charge dynamics and surface reactivity in photocatalytic CO 2 valorization.

Boosting Photocatalytic Conversion of Glucose by Constructing Oxygen Vacancies in TiO2-x

Zhangyang Li,Chunling Wang,Daoping He,Fangming Jin

Photocatalytic biomass valorization toward multicarbon chemicals holds promise for sustainable energy solutions. Nevertheless, this approach suffers from dual challenges: inherent instability of polyhydroxy intermediates and inefficient formic acid production under ambient conditions. Here, we demonstrated that a TiO 2-x photocatalyst with oxygen vacancies can effectively catalyze the transformation of glucose into arabinose, erythrose, and formic acid using O 2 as an oxidant in pure water under natural sunlight irradiation. The C 1 −OH group of glucose adsorbed on the oxygen vacancies of TiO 2-x undergoes photo-induced hole oxidation, leading to the formation of gluconolactone-TiO 2-x as a new motif. Subsequent cleavage of bonds by ·OOH radicals generated from oxygen reduction produces arabinose, erythrose, and formic acid. The oxygen vacancy strategy achieves a remarkable 53.9% yield for glucose oxidation, which exhibits 10.8-fold enhancement compared to that of conventional TiO 2 without oxygen vacancies, thereby opening new avenues for developing efficient photocatalytic systems for sustainable biomass valorization.

Efficient photocatalytic degradation of sulfamethazine by Cu-CuxO/TiO2 composites: Performance, photocatalytic mechanism and degradation pathways

Shuang Shu,Hongjun Wang,Xinyan Guo,Yan Wang,Xiaolan Zeng

In this study, a novel Cu-Cu x O/TiO 2 composite photocatalyst was synthesized using combined sol–gel and impregnation methods. Several technologies were employed to characterize the morphology, crystalline structure, optical properties, and surface composition of the as-synthesized photocatalysts . The successful preparation of the Cu-Cu x O/TiO 2 composite was confirmed with superior properties compared to pure TiO 2 and Cu-Cu x O composite. The results for the degradation experiment employing sulfamethazine (SMZ) as the target pollutant indicated that the CT9 (the theoretical molar ratio of Cu(CH 3 COO) 2 to TiO 2 was 9:1) composite exhibits the best photocatalytic performance, and the degradation rate of SMZ reaches 98.2% after 60 min of irradiation. The good repeatability of CT9 was proved by five-cycle experiments. Radicals trapping experiments indicated that superoxide radicals and holes were primary oxidative species in photocatalytic degradation of SMZ. Eleven intermediates for SMZ degradation were identified employing LC-MS technology and the possible degradation pathways were proposed. ECOSAR models were used to predict the biotoxicity of the degradation intermediates. The present research exhibits a new opportunity for the construction of Cu-Cu x O-based photocatalysts to remove contaminants from antibiotic wastewater.

TiO-supported RuIr alloy as an efficient and CO-resistant catalyst for hydrogen oxidation

Lingfei Li,Haishan Liu,Chenhui Xu,Jinghong Chen,Shuqi Deng,Zewen Zhuang,Kaian Sun,Kaili Wang,Wei Yan,Jiujun Zhang

Ruthenium (Ru), with a hydrogen binding energy comparable to platinum (Pt) and stronger oxygen affinity, is a promising platform for designing hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) catalysts. Nevertheless, the practical application of Ru-based catalysts is still hampered by limited intrinsic activity and poor CO tolerance. In this work, a RuIr alloy supported on titanium oxide (RuIr/TiO) is obtained as an efficient and durable catalyst for alkaline HOR. The mass activity of RuIr/TiO reaches to 10.36 A mg −1 PGM at the overpotential of 50 mV, which is 4.84 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C. Under 1000 ppm CO/H 2 , RuIr/TiO shows only a 6.85 % drop in current density after a long-time electrolysis, outperforming commercial Pt/C (27.84 %). Experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that alloying and strong metal-support interaction can induce interfacial charge redistribution and modulate the electronic structure of the active Ru site, thereby accelerate the reaction kinetics of alkaline HOR, optimize H adsorption, and enhance OH binding, leading to the promoted oxidation of CO on the catalyst surface.

Pt nanoparticles supported on N-doped TiO₂/C composite supports for fuel cell catalysis

Xiaoling Liu,Sibin zhu,Shuodan Li,Letian Li,Xiaoming Zhu,Haolin Tang,Yadong Wang

Commercial Pt/C catalyst in Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) usually suffers from Pt agglomeration, dissolution, and carbon support corrosion—exacerbated by Pt-catalyzed carbon oxidation. To address these challenges, composite supports combining high stability and electronic synergy with Pt have emerged as a promising solution. Herein, a platinum nanoparticle catalyst supported on a nitrogen-doped titania/carbon composite (Pt NPs/TiO₂-N/C) was successfully fabricated via a two-step hydrothermal method, aiming to optimize both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics and durability through regulated support structures and interfacial interactions. Experimental results demonstrate that strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) between Pt and TiO₂-N/C play a critical role. On one hand, SMSI induces electron transfer from the support to Pt, enhances ORR kinetics. On the other hand, this interaction promotes preference nucleation and distribution of Pt on TiO₂-N surfaces, reducing direct Pt-carbon contact and effectively inhibiting Pt-catalyzed carbon corrosion, thereby improving durability. The Pt NPs/TiO₂-N/C catalyst exhibits excellent ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.842 V (vs. RHE) and remarkable stability, showing only a 33 mV decay in half-wave potential after 5000 accelerated degradation test cycles. This study validates that precise regulation of metal-support electronic interactions enables synergistic optimization of catalytic activity, stability, providing a theoretical basis and practical strategies for the rational design of high-performance PEMFC catalysts.

Surface Functionalization and Humidity on Charge Transport in PP/TiO₂ and PP/MgO Nanocomposites

Phichet Ketsamee,Alun Vaughan,Thomas Andritsch

This study investigates the influence of polar silane coupling agents (SCAs) on charge transport in polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites containing magnesium oxide (MgO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles in the presence of water molecules. Surface functionalization results in reduced charge accumulation and electrical conductivity compared with unmodified nanocomposites. Under vacuum-dried conditions, the charge transport is primarily dominated by the types of nanoparticles. It is hypothesized that band bending at the interfaces of MgO used in the PP matrix is more effective in suppressing charges than TiO2. Regarding humidity, the extent of water absorption not only influences charge transport but also contributes to the bonding states between water molecules and nanoparticle surfaces. Despite higher water absorption, band bending at the interfaces in PP/MgO potentially limits the increase in charge transport. In addition, differences in electronegativity during surface functionalization would lead to distinct bonding states with water molecules, resulting in varying energy band levels at interfaces, which in turn influence the ability of materials to capture charge carriers. The most effective charge suppression and reduced electrical conductivity are achieved in ethoxy-modified materials with amino functional groups.
