Preparation of TiO2/Ag[BMIM]Cl Composites and Their Visible Light Photocatalytic Properties for the Degradation of Rhodamine B

Xi Lin,Yanxia Li

In order to degrade toxic pollutants such as dyes during the process of sewage treatment, considerable attention has been paid to photocatalytic technologies. In this paper, TiO2/Ag[BMIM]Cl (1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl)) nanocomposites were prepared with TiO2as the carrier, silver ions as dopants and ionic liquids (IL) as modifiers. The morphologies, microstructures, crystalline structure and optical properties of the TiO2/Ag[BMIM]Cl nanospheres are investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), total organic carbon (TOC), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrum (UV-vis DRS) techniques. The TiO2/Ag[BMIM]Cl nanocomposites can selectively degrade rhodamine B (Rh B) under visible light because of the unstable quaternary ammonium salt. The as-obtained nanocomposites exhibit better photocatalytic activity performance than pure TiO2, TiO2/IL, and TiO2/Ag+. The experimental results show that the Rh B degradation rate can reach 98.87% under optimized producing conditions by using the TiO2/Ag[BMIM]Cl composites as the catalyzer. It shows that simultaneous doping with silver ions and ionic liquids can significantly improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO2in Rh B degradation, indicating the formation of photosensitive AgCl in the process of TiO2/Ag[BMIM]Cl preparation. Ag+and IL addition exchange the band gap of TiO2and lengthen the visible wavelength range of the composite. The material has the advantages of low cost, facile preparation and reusability with the excellent degradation effect of Rh B.Keywords:TiO2/Ag[BMIM]Cl composites;rhodamine B;visible photocatalytic degradation

Microcystis aeruginosa Synergistically Facilitate the Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline Hydrochloride and Cr(VI) on PAN/TiO2/Ag Nanofiber Mats

Lei Wang,Changbo Zhang,Rong Cheng,Jafar Ali,Zhenbo Wang,Gilles Mailhot,Gang Pan

Cyanobacterial blooms can cause serious damage to aquatic ecosystems. However, we have demonstrated that typical algae-blooming speciesMicrocystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa)combined with photocatalysts could synergistically facilitate the photodecontamination of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and Cr(VI). In this study, for the first time, harmful algae were successfully converted into photoreactive bionano hybrid materials by immobilizingM. aeruginosacells onto polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-TiO2/Ag hybrid nanofibers, and their photocatalytic activity was evaluated. The addition ofM. aeruginosasignificantly improved the photodecontamination, and the reaction rate constant (k) values of TC and Cr(VI) degradation byM. aeruginosa-PAN/TiO2/Ag nanofiber mats were 2.4 and 1.5-fold higher than that of bare PAN/TiO2/Ag nanofiber. Photoreaction caused damage to algae cells, but no microcystin was found that had been photodegraded simultaneously. The effects of various active species were also investigated, and the photodegradation mechanism was proposed. Recycling tests revealed that this flexibleM. aeruginosa-PAN/TiO2/Ag hybrid mat had potential application in the removal of mixed organic and inorganic pollutants with high efficiency and without secondary pollutants. Thus, harmful algae blooms could serve as an efficient materials to remove toxic pollutants in a sustainable way under visible light irradiation. Keywords:Microcystis aeruginosa;PAN nanofiber;TiO2photocatalytic;Ag nanoparticles;tetracycline;Cr(VI)

Fabrication of PAN@TiO2/Ag nanofibrous membrane with high visible light response and satisfactory recyclability for dye photocatalytic degradation

Yongzheng Shi,Dongzhi Yang,Yuan Li,Jin Qu,Zhong-Zhen Yu

Although TiO 2 -based photocatalysts have exhibited a great potential for degradation of organic pollutants, it is still necessary to simultaneously enhance their visible-light-driven photocatalytic efficiency and physical recyclability. Herein, highly efficient, visible-light-driven photocatalytically active, and recyclable nanofibrous membranes with thin TiO 2 /Ag heterojunction layer are prepared using electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibrous membrane as the substrate. By regulating the concentration and hydrolysis process of Ti precursors, TiO 2 nanoparticles steadily grow on the PAN nanofibers with high-specific surface area to form a continuous mesoporous shell with the thickness of 20   nm for efficient degradation of organic pollutants. Furthermore, to form a stable heterojunction structure, Ag nanoparticles are deposited on the TiO 2 surface by using dopamine as a binder and reductant. The presence of Ag nanoparticles leads to an obvious red-shift from 380   nm to 490   nm, which improves the utilization efficiency of visible light, and reduces the electron/hole recombination rate simultaneously. The resulting PAN@TiO 2 /Ag membranes hold enhanced photocatalytic activity for methylene blue degradation within 1   h under visible light irradiation, and satisfactory recyclability, which endow them with a great potential for adsorption and photocatalytic applications.

Fabrication of N/K-doped TiO2-Ag nanospheres with efficient charge transfer for enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction into CH4

Yinan Ren,Wei Li

Solar-driven CO 2 reduction into hydrocarbon fuels has a great potential for mitigating the issues of greenhouse effect and fossil energy crisis we are currently facing. It is a great challenge for visible-light-driven photocatalytic CO 2 reduction into CH 4 with high selectivity and conversion efficiency. Herein, we report a synthesis of N/K-doped TiO 2 nanospheres with Ag nanoparticles decoration (N/K-TiO 2 -Ag) by a solvothermal method and study its photocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance. It is found that the N/K-TiO 2 -Ag composite exhibits superior photocatalytic CO 2 reduction into CH 4 yield and selectivity than K-TiO 2 and N/K-TiO 2 . Indeed, the N/K-TiO 2 -Ag-0.5 sample shows the highest CH 4 yield with rate of 113.84 μmol g −1 h −1 and selectivity of CH 4 (93.71%) under light irradiation. The enhancement might be attributed to the synergy of N/K doping and silver loading. In particular, the N/K doping and the Ag cocatalysts introducing triggered improvement of solar energy utilization and charge separation as well as Ag-induced SPR effect and the K + -induced redistribution of photogenerated charge carriers cooperatively promotes photocatalytic CO 2 conversion into CH 4 . It is expected this work would offer a guide for rational design of K/TiO 2 -based photocatalyst for selectively converting CO 2 into fuels.

Simultaneous photocatalytic degradation and SERS detection of tetracycline with self-sustainable and recyclable ternary PI/TiO2/Ag flexible microfibers

Han Donglai,Guo Boyang,Li Yanru,Feng Wei,Liu Keyan,Wu Tianna,Wan Yuchun,Wang Lili,Gao Ming,Liu Yang,Yang Lili,Wei Maobin,Yang Shuo

Facile and efficient photocatalysts using sunlight, as well as fast and sensitive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates, are urgently needed for practical degradation of tetracycline (TC). To meet these requirements, a new paradigm for PI/TiO 2 /Ag organic‒inorganic ternary flexible microfibers based on semiconducting titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ), the noble metal silver (Ag) and the conjugated polymer polyimide (PI) was developed by engineering a simple method. Under sunlight, the photocatalytic characteristics of the PI/TiO 2 /Ag flexible microfibers containing varying amounts of Ag quantum dots (QDs) were evaluated with photocatalytic degradation of TC in aqueous solution. The results demonstrated that the amount of Ag affected the photocatalytic activity. Among the tested samples, PI/TiO 2 /Ag-0.07 (93.1%) exhibited a higher photocatalytic degradation rate than PI/TiO 2 (25.7%), PI/TiO 2 /Ag-0.05 (77.7%), and PI/TiO 2 /Ag-0.09 (63.3%). This observation and evaluation conducted in the present work strongly indicated a charge transfer mechanism. Moreover, the PI/TiO 2 /Ag-0.07 flexible microfibers exhibited highly sensitive SERS detection, as demonstrated by the observation of the Raman peaks for TC even at an extremely low concentration of 10 –10 moles per liter. The excellent photocatalytic performance and SERS detection capability of the PI/TiO 2 /Ag flexible microfibers arose from the Schottky barrier formed between Ag and TiO 2 and also from the outstanding plasmonic resonance and visible light absorptivity of Ag, along with immobilization by the PI. The successful synthesis of PI/TiO 2 /Ag flexible microfibers holds significant promise for sensitive detection and efficient photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics.

Enhanced visible light-driven photodegradation of rhodamine B by Ti3+ self-doped TiO2@Ag nanoparticles prepared using Ti vapor annealing

Yang Wangyang,Shen Honglie,Min Huihua,Ge Jiawei

In recent years, Ti 3+ self-doped TiO 2 (B-TiO 2 ) exhibits great potential as a photocatalyst. In this work, Ti vapor-assisted annealing is first demonstrated for Ti 3+ doping and improving the visible absorption of TiO 2 . TEM results exhibit the formation of disordered layer, indicating the successful fabricating of B-TiO 2 . The absorption increase in TiO 2 caused by Ti vapor annealing reaches nearly 50% in the visible wavelength range. Benefiting from the absorption increase, the photocatalytic performance of TiO 2 after Ti vapor annealing increases by 60–70%. Surface modification of Ag onto B-TiO 2 is also carried out to further improve its optical property. Ag-modified Ti 3+ self-doped TiO 2 (B-TiO 2 @Ag) exhibits great visible photodegradation behavior to RhB. The RhB degradation rate reaches 97.76% after 60 min of visible light irradiation. Electrochemical performance tests demonstrate that as-prepared TiO 2 @Ag has lower resistance than W-TiO 2 . The results indicate that B-TiO 2 @Ag has great potential in solar photocatalytic degradation of pollutant.

Multi-functional DNA-based synthesis of SWNTs@(TiO2/Ag/Au) nanocomposites for enhanced light-harvesting and charge collection in DSSCs

Mei Yu,Jindan Zhang,Songmei Li,Yanbing Meng,Jianhua Liu

The performances of photovoltaic devices can be improved by increasing light-harvesting and charge collection respectively. The design and synthesis of nanocomposites with the ability of enhancing the generation and collection of the photo-generated electrons provide a significant way to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE). Herein, SWNTs@(TiO2/Ag/Au) nanocomposites were synthesized and successfully integrated into photoanode films of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) to improve the power conversion efficiency. The synthesis processes were based on multi-functional DNA. DNA not only works as a dispersing agent preventing SWNTs bundling but also as a sacrificial mold assembling TiO2, Ag and Au nanoparticles on the surface of the SWNTs. The synthesized SWNTs@(TiO2/Ag/Au) nanocomposites enhance the charge collection and light-harvesting of DSSCs simultaneously. With 2.45 wt% SWNTs@(TiO2/Ag/Au) nanocomposites incorporating into the photoanode films, the PCE of the DSSCs increases from 6.8% to 8.3%.

Fabrication of pollutant-resistance SERS imprinted sensors based on SiO2@TiO2@Ag composites for selective detection of pyrethroids in water

Hongji Li,Yan Wang,Yue Li,Jinyue Zhang,Yu Qiao,Qingwei Wang,Guangbo Che

As a sensitive analytical technique, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is widely used in spectral analysis, single molecule detection and biological/chemical sensors. Noble-metal nanostructures have sensitive SERS properties and usually act as SERS substrates. Moreover, semiconductors also possess SERS properties and when the semiconductors are combined with noble metals this can not only enhance the SERS signal but also introduce additional properties. Therefore, in this investigation, SiO 2 @TiO 2 @Ag composite materials are selected as SERS substrates, which not only increase the SERS property of substrates but also introduce the property of self-cleaning under conditions of UV light . The molecularly imprinted technique (MIT) is combined with SERS in this investigation to improve the disadvantage of traditional SERS substrates having low selectivity . Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have specific adsorption properties that can enrich the templates on the surface of SiO 2 @TiO 2 @Ag composites. Importantly, the MIPs can prevent the SERS substrate being oxidized, which effectively protects the core materials. Hence, SiO 2 @TiO 2 @Ag@MIPs is synthesized based on SERS and MIT for used in pyrethroid detection. The Raman intensity and fenvalerate concentration show a good linear relationship in the FE range of 1.0–100 nmol l −1 and the detection limit is 0.2 nmol l −1 . Furthermore, the SiO 2 @TiO 2 @Ag@MIPs present good selectivity and self-cleaning. This investigation provides a novel approach to pyrethroid detection.

Rational regulation of post-electrodialysis electrochromic anion exchange membranes via TiO2@Ag synergistically strengthens visible-light photocatalytic anti-contamination activity

Yuyang Yao,Yueyue Lu,Jingwen Xu,Jiacheng Yu,Liang Guo,Heda Ding,Jian Li,Junbin Liao,Edison Huixiang Ang,Zhenlu Shen,Jiangnan Shen

Membrane-contamination during electrodialysis (ED) process is still a non-negligible challenge, while irreversible consumption and unsustainability have become the main bottlenecks limiting the improvement of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) anti-contamination activity. Here, we introduce a novel approach to design AEMs by chemically assembling 4-pyndinepropanol with bromomethylated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (BPPO) in an electrochromic-inspired process. Subsequently, the co-mingled TiO 2 @Ag nanosheet with the casting-solution were sprayed onto the surface of the substrate membrane to create a micrometer-thick interfacial layer. The addition of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) enhances the active sites of TiO 2 , resulting in stronger local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effects and reducing its energy band gap limitation (From 3.11 to 2.63 eV). Post-electrodialysis electrochromic AEMs incorporating TiO 2 @Ag exhibit synergistic enhancement of sunlight absorption, effectively suppressing photogenerated carrier binding and promoting migration. These resultant-membranes demonstrate significantly improved bacterial inhibition properties (42.0-fold increase for E. coli ) and degradation activity (7.59-fold increase for rhodamine B) compared to pure TiO 2 membranes. Importantly, they maintain photocatalytic activity without compromising salt-separation performance or stability, as the spraying process utilizes the same substrate materials. This approach to rational design and regulation of anti-contamination AEMs offers new insights into the collaborative synergy of color-changing and photocatalytic materials.

AgTNP@TiO2@Ag core-satellite composites for sensitive sensing and in situ monitoring photodegradation of organic dyes by portable Raman spectrometer

Huan Cheng,Kuang Luo,Xiaojun Wen,Jie Yang,Jumei Li

The development of sensitive, reliable, and robust substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) heavily relies on the creation of numerous hot spots. In this study, we propose a simple approach to fabricate core-satellite composites composed of AgTNP@TiO 2 @Ag, where Ag triangular nanoplates (AgTNPs) act as the cores, TiO 2 serves as the interlayer, and Ag nanoparticles are deposited around them to form Ag satellites. By adjusting the amount of AgNO 3 , we precisely control the coverage of Ag nanoparticles on AgTNP@TiO 2 @Ag, thus fine-tuning their SERS sensitivity. Various characterization techniques were employed to examine their composition, morphology, and crystal structure. Thanks to the abundant hot spots created by the Ag satellites, these composites exhibit significantly enhanced SERS sensitivity and they demonstrate the capability to detect methylene blue (MB) at a concentration of 10 −10  M by portable Raman spectrometer. Moreover, the AgTNP@TiO 2 @Ag composites effectively enable in situ SERS monitoring of the photodegradation reaction of MB. Overall, the novel AgTNP@TiO 2 @Ag composites prepared in this study exhibit high SERS sensitivity and excellent photocatalytic performance, making them highly valuable for environmental detection and ecological restoration purposes.

Fabrication of a superhydrophobic cotton fabric with efficient antibacterial properties and asymmetric wettability via synergistic effect of quaternized chitosan/TiO2/Ag

Yaxi Tan,Kuanjun Fang,Weichao Chen,Qi Shi,Chunming Zhang

A superhydrophobic cotton fabric with unidirectional moisture transfer ability, antibacterial, and oil-water separation capabilities was fabricated by combining a simple coating method and oxygen plasma etching. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was employed to impart low surface energy to the cotton fabric, thereby endowing it with hydrophobic characteristics. The synthesized quaternized chitosan/TiO 2 /Ag (CTA) compound was subsequently applied onto the cotton fabric surface to introduce a desirable level of surface roughness, thus enhancing its hydrophobic properties and conferring excellent antibacterial efficacy. The cotton was subsequently treated by oxygen plasma to trigger asymmetrical wetting on both sides. The experimental findings reveal that the optimally treated cotton fabric exhibits hydrophobic properties on the bottom surface, with a water contact angle (WCA) reaching 162.8°, while the upper surface displays hydrophilic behavior, establishing a wetting gradient along the thickness direction. Notably, even under the influence of reverse gravity, water droplets are capable of transferring from the back to the top surface within 2 s, while preventing reverse penetration of liquid. Moreover, the synthesized compound CTA endows the cotton fabric with efficient and long-lasting antibacterial properties through two modes (contact and release sterilization modes) and three sterilization mechanisms (electrostatic interaction, plasma surface resonance effect, and reactive oxygen species). Remarkably, within a time frame of only 1 h, the modified cotton fabric is able to achieve a kill rate exceeding 99% against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . Moreover, the aforementioned properties demonstrate outstanding durability against repeated washing, continuous abrasion, exposure to strong acid/base, and ultraviolet radiation. Additionally, this modified cotton fabric exhibits remarkable efficiency in terms of oil-water separation, effectively separating both light and heavy oil from water. It is worth noting that the preparation process is cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and free from fluorine.

A molecularly-imprinted SERS sensor based on a TiO2@Ag substrate for the selective capture and sensitive detection of tryptamine in foods

Chen Chen,Ximo Wang,Yingfang Zhang,Xingying Li,Huiju Gao,Geoffrey I.N. Waterhouse,Xuguang Qiao,Zhixiang Xu

Herein, a molecularly imprinted surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensor was developed for the selective capture and sensitive detection of tryptamine in foods. The SERS sensor exploited silver nanoparticle-decorated TiO 2 (TiO 2 @Ag) substrates for Raman signal enhancement via synergistic effect of electromagnetic enhancement and photoinduced charge-transfer, whilst surface functionalization with the molecularly imprinted polymer ensured selective tryptamine capture. The SERS spectrum of tryptamine on the sensor closely matched that predicted by density functional simulations. The SERS intensity for tryptamine on the developed TiO 2 @ [email protected] sensor increased linearly with the logarithm of the tryptamine concentration over the range of 10 −6 –10 −2 mol L −1 , with a LOD of 4.85 × 10 −7 mol L −1 . Tryptamine was detected in a spiked white vinegar sample, and its recoveries were in the range of 92.00%–111.40%. The SERS sensor could be used for the detection of tryptamine in actual samples.
