Ti3C2Tx MXene-derived amorphous TiO2-C nanosheet cocatalysts coupled CdS nanostructures for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Na Zhao,Yang Hu,Jinlong Du,Gang Liu,Bowei Dong,Yuying Yang,Jing Peng,Jiuqiang Li,Maolin Zhai

Developing non-noble-metal cocatalysts is essential for the large-scale implementation of solar-driven H 2 production technology, but still remains a great challenge. In this work, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene coupled CdS nanostructures are fabricated via one-step gamma-ray radiation-induced reduction in ambient conditions. By subsequent alkaline treatment, a novel cocatalyst of carbon supported amorphous TiO 2 nanosheets (denoted as aTiO 2 -C) is derived from Ti 3 C 2 T x /CdS to form aTiO 2 -C/CdS nanocomposites. The prepared aTiO 2 -C/CdS nanocomposites with cyclability achieve a H 2 evolution rate of 1.48 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 under visible-light illumination, which is 6.4 and 7.0 times greater than that of pristine Ti 3 C 2 T x /CdS and P-CdS, respectively. The oxygen vacancies in aTiO 2 -C cocatalysts are revealed to act as electron trapping sites to facilitate the transfer of photoexcited electrons and boost photoactivity. Further, the electronic interaction between CdS and aTiO 2 -C prevents Cd 2+ from leaching and thus enhances photostability. The results of this work may guide the rational design of viable cost-effective cocatalysts in solar-to-chemical energy conversion and beyond.

N and S co-doping of TiO2@C derived from in situ oxidation of Ti3C2 MXene for efficient persulfate activation and sulfamethoxazole degradation under visible light

Shuyi Shen,Tao Ke,Dike Fang,Daohui Lin

Visible-light-driven photocatalysts with synergistic persulfate (PS) activation and photocatalysis possess enormous pollution-control potential. Herein, nitrogen and sulphur co-doped TiO 2 @C hybrid (N/S-TiO 2 @C) featuring the complementary visible-light photocatalysis and synergetic PS activation was synthesized by in situ oxidation of Ti 3 C 2 MXene and thereafter co-doping with N and S. Both anatase and rutile phases of TiO 2 were attained in N/S-TiO 2 @C. The decrease of TiO 2 bandgap (about 1.81 eV) and the defect of carbon layer caused by the N and S co-doping in both TiO 2 crystal and carbon layer enabled the synergistic enhancement of PS activation and photocatalysis. Complete degradation and 93.4% mineralization of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ, 10 mg/L) were achieved by dosing PS (2 mM) and N/S-TiO 2 @C (0.4 g/L) under visible light within 30 min. The degradation rate by N/S-TiO 2 @C through PS activation under visible light was 27.9-, 11.1-, and 2.30-fold higher than that by PS, N-TiO 2 @C, and S-TiO 2 @C alone, respectively. Reactive species SO 4 − , 1 O 2 , OH, and O 2 − , especially the former two, were determined dominating the SMZ degradation, and the degradation pathways were illustrated through intermediates identification. Moreover, N/S-TiO 2 @C kept excellent performance in activating PS to degrade SMZ in real water samples. These results indicate that N/S-TiO 2 @C is a stable and promising PS activator under visible light and has a good application potential in organic wastewater treatment.

A truncated octahedron metal-organic framework derived TiO2@C@MoS2 composite with superior lithium-ion storage properties

Qiannan Zhou,Wei Li,Mengyou Gao,Huizhong Xu,Yu Guo,Lei Sun,Dehua Zheng,Jianjian Lin

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as 3D porous precursors, have demonstrated great potential as electrode materials for lithium storage on account of high specific area and tunable structure. To enhance the intrinsic performance and endow MOFs with versatility, constructing distinctive morphology of MOFs while maintaining their porous structure to satisfy various application is highly desirable. Herein, we successfully developed a facile strategy for rationally designing and synthesizing the morphology of MOFs from circular plate shape to truncated octahedron gem shape via regulating the ratio of Pluronic F127 to terephthalic acid . In addition, the as-prepared Pluronic F127-regulated Ti-based MOFs (F-MIL-125-Ti) sacrifice as precursor to derive 3D mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) and as template for in situ growth of molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanosheets to prepare a truncated octahedron TiO 2 @C@MoS 2 hierarchical composite. As expected, the distinctive 3D hierarchical TiO 2 @C@MoS 2 electrode exhibits superb rate capability (775 mAh g −1 at 5 C) and outstanding cycling stability (822 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 1 C), which is benefiting from the 3D mesoporous TiO 2 and synergies between TiO 2 and MoS 2 nanosheets. This work develops new insight to design novel and controllable morphology MOFs-derived materials for application of energy storage devices.

Vapor pressure-assisted synthesis of chemically bonded TiO2/C nanocomposites with highly mesoporous structure for lithium-ion battery anode with high capacity, ultralong cycling lifetime, and superior rate capability

Meisheng Han,Yongbiao Mu,Fu Yuan,Xuedong Bai,Jie Yu

To date, development of a lithium-ion battery anode with high capacity, long cycling life over ten thousands of cycles, and fast lithium ion storage within a few seconds for each cycle is still a challenge. Here, a highly mesoporous TiO 2 /C nanocomposite consisting of ultrathin carbon layers tightly coating on the surface of anatase TiO 2 nanocrystals with an average size of 20 nm via interfacial chemical bonds of Ti-O-C is obtained by a simple and facile vapor pressure-assisted synthesis route that pyrolysis of the solution of tetrabutyl orthotitanate tetramer dissolved in ethanol in a sealed vessel. As anode for lithium ion battery , the TiO 2 /C nanocomposite shows a reversible capacity of 630.3 mAh g −1 at 0.5C after 400 cycles, which is unprecedent for the ever reported TiO 2 /C electrode at similar cycle number. Besides, the TiO 2 /C nanocomposite also exhibits ultralong cycling lifetime (over 10000 cycles without capacity loss at 120C) and ultrahigh rate capability (20.5 mAh g −1 at 144C). The outstanding lithium ion storage performances are ascribed to its unique structures, i.e., ultrathin carbon coating, ultrasmall TiO 2 particles, the formation of interfacial chemical bonds of Ti-O-C, and highly mesoporous structure.

A hierarchically porous TiO2@C membrane with oxygen vacancies: a novel platform for enhancing the catalytic conversion of polysulfides

Sheng-You Qiu,Chuang Wang,Liang-Liang Gu,Ke-Xin Wang,Xiao-Tian Gao,Jian Gao,Zaixing Jiang,Jian Gu,Xiao-Dong Zhu

In cases involving high levels of sulfur loading or high levels of current discharge, constructing sulfur composite cathodes via traditional coating preparation processes is an unsuitable way to overcome intractable problems relating to cathodes for use in lithium–sulfur batteries, such as poor conductivity, severe volume expansion, and the detrimental shuttle effect. Herein, a novel three-dimensional self-supported TiO2@C membrane with hierarchical interlinked porosity and oxygen vacancies was prepared via a phase-inversion method to act as a sulfur host. The procured TiO2−x@C membrane facilitates the infiltration of electrolyte, provides fast lithium-ion and electron transport channels and abundant sulfur loading sites, and shows superb structural buffering against the large volume changes during the conversion process between sulfur and lithium sulfide. More importantly, the introduction of oxygen vacancies not only enhances the conductivity of the original TiO2, but it also improves the corresponding adsorption abilities toward polysulfides and the subsequent transformation dynamics. Therefore, the TiO2−x@C membrane can significantly inhibit the polysulfide shuttle effect through polar chemisorption and conversion catalysis. Based on the above superiorities, the TiO2−x@C/S membrane electrode exhibits an impressive lifespan of more than 500 cycles at 2 C with a prominent ultimate specific discharge capacity of 715.2 mA h g−1.

Electrospun Ta-doped TiO2/C nanofibers as a high-capacity and long-cycling anode material for Li-ion and K-ion batteries

Die Su,Li Liu,Zhixiao Liu,Jing Dai,Jiaxing Wen,Min Yang,Sidra Jamil,Huiqiu Deng,Guozhong Cao,Xianyou Wang

Ta-doped TiO2/C nanofibers are synthesized by an electrospinning method. First-principles calculations reveal that the Ta dopant can lower the Li/K diffusion barrier, which is beneficial for improving the rate capability. According to the electronic structure analysis, the dopant can obviously shift the conduction band of TiO2 downward, resulting in significantly improved electronic conductivity. Ta doping causes phase transformation from anatase to rutile, and increases the specific surface area. The well-designed rutile Ta-doped TiO2/C nanofibers show outstanding electrochemical properties in both Li-metal half cells and K-metal half cells, which are much better than those of pristine anatase TiO2/C nanofibers. At 2 A g−1, 5% rutile Ta-doped TiO2/C nanofibers could deliver high reversible specific capacities of 399 mA h g−1 in Li-ion batteries after 1000 cycles whereas deliver 148 mA h g−1 in K-ion batteries after 800 cycles. When assembled, the full cells with 5% rutile Ta-doped TiO2/C nanofibers as the anode and commercial LiFePO4/perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride as the cathode show excellent cycling performance and can light up more than 18 LEDs. These results demonstrate that Ta-doped TiO2/C nanofibers are a promising anode material for Li/K ion batteries.

Novel Hierarchical TiO2/C Nanocomposite with Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Yupeng Gao,Hao Chen,Aiguo Zhou,Zhengyang Li,Fanfan Liu,Qianku Hu,Libo Wang

Hierarchical TiO 2 /carbon nanocomposites were synthesized by oxidation of two-dimensional (2D) Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets at different temperatures. Crystal structures and morphologies of the obtained samples were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The results show that 2D Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets are partially oxidized to form a novel hierarchical nanostructure which is composed of carbon nanosheets and TiO 2 nanoparticles. With the calcination temperature increasing, the crystal structure of TiO 2 nanoparticles changes from anatase to rutile and the hierarchical structure was gradually destroyed. The photodegradation results reveal that the samples obtained at 200°C and 285°C show much better photocatalytic properties than P25. And meanwhile the photocatalytic property will become worse with the increase in calcinations temperature.

Continuous fast pyrolysis synthesis of TiO2/C nanohybrid lithium-ion battery anode

Xiaoyan Wang,Axel Funke,Ya-Jun Cheng,Fang Song,Shanshan Yin,Suzhe Liang,Xiuxia Zuo,Jie Gao,Peter Müller-Buschbaum,Yonggao Xia

Continuous fast pyrolysis is developed for in situ synthesis of ultra-small metal oxide nanoparticles embedded into three-dimensional macroporous carbon matrix as demonstrated by the TiO 2 /carbon nanohybrid. The TiO 2 nanoparticles with the average size of 4.6 nm ± 0.6 nm are uniformly distributed in the in situ generated macroporous carbon matrix. When evaluated as an anode in a lithium-ion battery, the macroporous TiO 2 /C nanohybrid exhibits a reversible capacity of 483 mAh g –1 after 500 cycles at a current density of 67 mA g –1 , which is 3.6 times higher than that of the TiO 2 /C calcined in a conventional batchwise way. Besides, the capacity retains 93 mAh g –1 at a high current density of 670 mA g –1 . It reveals that the continuous fast pyrolysis is an efficient method to fabricate carbon composition based metal oxides as lithium-ion battery anode materials.

Ti3+-doped TiO2@C nanorods with enhanced photocatalytic performance under visible light

Xueyi Zhu,Shuling Shen,Zhihong Tang,Junhe Yang

Ti3+-doped TiO2@C nanorods were prepared through a facile hydrothermal process. Na2Ti3O7 ultralong nanotubes and glucose were used as TiO2 precursor and carbon (C) source, respectively. During hydrothermal treatment, the hydrolysis of Na2Ti3O7 and polymerization of glucose induced the formation of TiO2 nanorods with a coating of carbon complex. At the same time, a part of Ti4+ was reduced to Ti3+ due to the rich hydroxyl groups in glucose. After calcination, an ultrathin carbon shell was formed on the surface of TiO2 nanorods. In this prepared composite, Ti3+ self-doped TiO2 nanorods work as photosensitizer to harvest solar energy to generate electron-hole pairs, the tight-binding interface between TiO2 nanorods and carbon shell works as electron transportation path, and the ultrathin carbon shell acts as electrons trapped and accumulated site. Photocatalytic test results indicate that Ti3+-doped TiO2@C nanorods exhibit higher activity and stability than TiO2 for photodegradation of methylene blue under visible light.

Reinforced photoelectrochemical properties of nanostructural TiO2/C/SiO2 integrated on conductive Ti3SiC2

Zhiwei Wang,Hongfeng Yin,Yun Tang,Qin Hou,Chen He,Hudie Yuan

Herein, we constructed an ordered nanoporous embedding nanoparticles composite by anodic oxidation of Ti 3 SiC 2 in fluorine containing organic electrolyte. Compared to anodized Ti which resulted in TiO 2 nanotubes , the anodized Ti 3 SiC 2 (ATSC) led to the formation of nanostructured TiO 2 /C/SiO 2 composite. The morphologies of oxides in the composite also varied with different anodization parameters. The ATSC could be directly used as an electrode without further processes, which possessed a superior structure and composition with a visible-light photocurrent density of 7.56 μA cm −2 , initial reversible area capacity of 6.18 F cm −2 , which were respectively 1.32 and 6.87 times higher than those of the anodized Ti (AT), respectively. The ATSC synthesized by such a feasible fabricating strategy shows favorable photoelectrochemical properties and remarkable stability, and may broaden the bifunctional material prospects of anodized MAX phases.

Photocatalytic performance of biochar-modified TiO2 (C/TiO2) for ammonia–nitrogen removal

Jiawei Wang,Guoqiao Wang,Tian Yu,Nengjie Ding,Meicheng Wang,Yao Chen

Biochar-modified TiO2 (C/TiO2) was prepared by a sol–gel method in this study to improve the photocatalytic capacity for ammonia–nitrogen (NH3–N) removal from aqueous solutions. The results showed that biochar was successfully modified on TiO2 and helped improve its photocatalytic performance for pollutant degradation. The removal capacity of ammonia–nitrogen on the synthesized photocatalyst performed well at pH 10 with 1 g L−1 C/TiO2 under both 60 (12.25 mg g−1) and 120 min (16.31 mg g−1) irradiation (xenon lamp, AM1.5, 25 A). Characterization of C/TiO2 through scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) analyses showed the successful introduction of biochar on TiO2. SEM-EDS and BET analyses displayed that C/TiO2 had a larger surface area and more pores than the raw materials. XRD spectroscopy illustrated that C/TiO2 had typical characteristic peaks of anatase-TiO2 and presented a good photocatalytic degradation performance. It was confirmed from XPS and FT-IR analyses that –COOH groups were present in C/TiO2 and originated from biochar modification, and these enhanced the photocatalytic performance. Through radical quenching experiments, it was found that superoxide radicals (˙O2−) played a dominant role in NH3–N photocatalytic reactions with hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and valence band holes (h+) playing a synergistic role. N2 was the main degradation product after 6 h NH3–N photocatalytic degradation, which was much larger than NO3−/NO2− (both almost undetected) and NH3 (ca. 2 times lower than N2). The new composite C/TiO2 has potential for ammonia–nitrogen degradation in wastewater treatment and favorable for treating sewage sludge.
