Byproduct formation (chlorate, bromate, organic halogen, etc.) during sulfate radical (SO4•–)-based processes like ultraviolet/peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) has aroused widespread concern. However, hypohalous acid (HOCl and HOBr) can form via two-electron transfer directly from PMS, thus leading to the formation of organic halogenated byproducts as well. This study found both PMS alone and UV/PMS can increase the toxicity to mammalian cells of wastewater, while the UV/H2O2 decreased the toxicity. Cytotoxicity of two wastewater samples increased from 5.6–8.3 to 15.7–29.9 mg-phenol/L, and genotoxicity increased from 2.8–3.1 to 5.8–12.8 μg 4-NQO/L after PMS treatment because of organic halogen formation. Organic halogen formation from bromide rather than chloride was found to dominate the toxicity increase. The SO4•–-based process UV/PMS led to the formation of both organic halogen and inorganic bromate and chlorate. However, because of the very low concentration (<20 μg/L) and relatively low toxicity of bromate and chlorate, contributions of inorganic byproducts to toxicity increase were negligible. PMS would not form chlorate and bromate, but it generated a higher concentration of total organic halogen, thus leading to a more toxic treated wastewater than UV/PMS. UV/PMS formed less organic halogen and toxicity because of the destruction of byproducts by UV irradiation and the removal of byproduct precursors. Currently, many studies focused on the byproducts bromate and chlorate during SO4•–-based oxidation processes. This work revealed that the oxidant PMS even needs more attention because it caused higher toxicity due to more organic halogen formation.

In this study, UV-LED was employed as a novel light source to investigate the degradation of a representative antibiotic compound, chloramphenicol (CAP), in the absence or presence of H 2 O 2 . The UV-LED irradiation showed a higher capability for degradation of CAP than conventional UV-Hg vapor lamps. Effects of the initial CAP concentration, UV wavelength, and light intensity on the degradation of CAP by UV-LED were evaluated. Introduction of H 2 O 2 evidently enhanced the degradation efficiency of CAP due to the production of reactive hydroxyl radicals. Results showed that the UV-LED/H 2 O 2 removed CAP by up to 95% within 60 min at pH 5.0, which was twice as that achieved by the UV-LED alone. The degradation products were identified to propose plausible degradation pathways. Moreover, the formation potentials of typical carbonaceous disinfection by-products (C-DBPs) and nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs) were assessed for the CAP polluted water treated by the UV-LED alone and UV-LED/H 2 O 2 processes. Results indicate unintended formation of certain DBPs, thereby highlighting the importance of health risk assessments before practical application. This study opens a new avenue for developing environment-friendly and high-performance UV-LED photocatalytic reactors for abatement of CAP pollution in water. Practitioner points UV-LED bore higher capability to degrade CAP than low-pressure Hg lamp. The optimal performance to degrade CAP can be achieved at the UV wavelength of 280 nm. The degradation efficiency under UV-LED/H 2 O 2 process was double of that under UV-LED process. TCM, DCAN, and TCNM formation were higher under the existence of UV-LED radiation. The addition of H 2 O 2 had greater influence on the formation of DCAcAm than the introduction of UV-LED.

The elimination of 2,3,6-trichloroanisole (2,3,6-TCA), which produces a musty-earthy off-odor in water, by an ultraviolet (UV)/H 2 O 2 process was assessed. The removal of 88.1% of 2,3,6-TCA in ultrapure water (UPW) was achieved using an initial 2,3,6-TCA concentration of 1 μg L −1 (4.73 nM), a H 2 O 2 concentration of 20 mg L −1 (0.588 mM), a UV intensity of 1.44 mW cm −2 and a pH of 8.2. The reaction was found to be pseudo first order with a rate constant ( k obs ) of 0.0340 min −1 . Both the removal efficiency and k obs increased significantly upon increasing the H 2 O 2 concentration from 10 to 50 mg L −1 . The second order rate constant ( k HO·,2,3,6-TCA ) in competition kinetic trials was determined to be 8.17 × 10 7 M −1 s −1 . Degradation products generated during both the UV photolysis and UV/H 2 O 2 treatment of 2,3,6-TCA solutions were analyzed using ultrahigh resolution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, and the degradation mechanism was proposed. The toxicities of water solutions during both processes were assessed via a luminescence method in conjunction with Vibrio fischeri . The pH and Cl − , HCO 3 − and natural organic matter concentrations of the aqueous medium were all found to significantly affect the removal of 2,3,6-TCA. The degradation rates of trichloroanisoles (TCAs) in real-world water samples demonstrated that UV/H 2 O 2 has significant potential with regard to controlling TCAs as pollutants in water.

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) are a great challenge to our drinking water security. Particularly, nitrosamines (NAms), as emerging DBPs, are potently carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic, and have increasingly attained public attention. This study was to evaluate the performance of the NAms degradation by the ultraviolet (UV) irradiation (253.7 nm) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). In the UV/H 2 O 2 system, hydroxyl radicals (OH ), a type of nonselective and powerful oxidant, was produced to attack the molecules of NAms. Factors affecting the treatment efficiency, including the H 2 O 2 dosage, initial NAms concentration, UV irradiation intensity, initial solution pH, and inorganic anions present in water, were evaluated. All the NAms degradation exhibited a pseudo-first-order kinetics pattern. Within 60 min, 0.1 mg/L of any NAms could be almost decomposed except NDPhA that required 120 min for complete removal, at 25 μmol/L H 2 O 2 and at initial pH 7. Results demonstrate that the UV/H 2 O 2 treatment is a viable option to control NAms in water.

Thiamphenicol (TAP) has been widely used in aquaculture to prevent bacterial diseases. However, this drug exhibits toxic side effects on the haemopoietic system. The removal of residual TAP in wastewater in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) was rarely reported before. In this study, degradation of TAP in aqueous solution by UV alone, UV/H 2 O 2 and UV/PS processes was investigated. The results showed that UV/H 2 O 2 and UV/PS significantly enhanced the degradation compared to UV alone. The TAP degradation followed a pseudo-first-order kinetics pattern well. The k obs declined with the increase of the initial TAP concentration, and increased with increasing oxidant dosage. The TAP degradation with UV/H 2 O 2 process was favorable under neutral and acidic conditions, and with UV/PS process was favorable under acidic and alkaline conditions. HCO 3 − markedly inhibited the degradation with the both processes, NO 3 − had a slight inhibition on the degradation in UV/H 2 O 2 system, and Cl − significantly enhanced the degradation with UV/PS process. HA markedly inhibited the degradation with the both processes. SO 4 − played the main role in the TAP degradation by UV/PS process. When TAP was completely degraded, only part of TAP was mineralized with UV/H 2 O 2 process, and was totally mineralized with UV/PS process. The possible degradation pathways were proposed based on the intermediate products obtained by LC-TOF-MS analysis. The electrical energy per order (EE/O) analysis showed that UV/PS process was a less energy consumption process. The results from this study revealed that UV/PS process was a cost-effective process in the degradation of TAP.

This study aimed to achieve toxicity control of sulfadiazine (SDZ) and pirimiphos-methyl (PMM) via the UV/H 2 O 2 process by optimizing the reaction parameters. The results show that both drugs had a good degradation effect under the following parameters: a H 2 O 2 molar ratio of 1:200, and neutral conditions. SDZ and PMM could be degraded by more than 99% within 3 min, respectively. In the Daphnia magna acute toxicity assay and Vibrio fischeri inhibition assay, both SDZ and PMM exhibited a phenomenon of increasing toxicity. Additionally, through the use of density functional theory (DFT) calculation and HPLC-QTOF-MS, 21 transformation products (TPs) were identified, and the principal degradation pathways were proposed. The toxicity of the TPs was determined by comparing the QSAR prediction results with toxicity test data. As a result, under the higher UV light intensity (2300 μW/cm 2 ) and neutral conditions, SDZ showed highest toxicity, whereas PMM showed lowest toxicity under the lowest UV light intensity (450 μW/cm 2 ) and neutral conditions. Four main toxic TPs were identified, and their yields could be reduced by adjusting the reaction parameters. Therefore, the selection of appropriate reaction parameters could reduce the production of toxic TPs and ensure the safety of water environment.

2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (DCBQ), a typical representative of Halobenzoquinones, is an emerging aromatic disinfection by-product (DBP) with high toxicity and carcinogenicity , generated commonly through the chlorination in the drinking water disinfection process while there is still a lack of research on its removal. In this study, the effects of ultraviolet-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs) on the degradation of DCBQ were evaluated. The results showed that UV-AOPs are effective in degrading DCBQ. The removal of DCBQ by UV/H 2 O 2 /O 3 was more significant than by UV/H 2 O 2 or UV/O 3, achieving a 96.7% removal rate at both the O 3 and H 2 O 2 doses of 1 mg/L. The results also indicated the alkaline and weakly acidic environments could facilitate the degradation of DCBQ, inorganic anions could inhibit DCBQ degradation and the degree of inhibition increased as the matrix concentration increased. The degradation of DCBQ was inhibited more by the CO 3 2− than the other matrix components, such as Cl − and NO 3 − . It was shown by the density functional theory simulations and the ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) - Orbitrap mass spectra that the electrons in DCBQ are mainly on the chlorine atom connected to the carboatomic ring and that OH• can attack the chlorine atom to cause de-chlorination. The DCBQ degradation pathway may involve the oxidation of DCBQ to 3-hydroxy-2,6-DCBQ (HO–DCBQ) and 3,5-dichloro-1,2,4-pyrogallol, the further degradation of intermediate products by OH• to dechlorinated forms of HO–DCBQ and DCBQ.

Photocatalysis can decolorize dye-laden wastewaters using light, but practical catalysts often suffer from narrow absorption, charge recombination, and stability limits. Here we synthesize a carbonate-intercalated cobalt–aluminum layered double hydroxide hosting cobalt-oxide nanocluster (CoAl-LDH/CoOx) via a one-pot hydrothermal route and evaluate its performance for dye decolorization and UV/H2O2 treatment of real textile wastewater. Under UV irradiation, CoAl-LDH/CoOx accelerates discoloration of methyl orange (MO) and Congo red (CR), following pseudo-first-order kinetics (e.g., MO: ∼98% removal at 5 mg L−1 in 100 min; CR: ∼100% at 100 mg L−1 in 100 min; kapp up to 0.14 min−1). On real textile wastewater (ADMI0 = 608.1), UV/H2O2 with 0.5 g L−1 catalyst achieved ∼80% American Dye Manufacturer's Institute (ADMI) removal in 120 min at 48.96 mM H2O2; outdoor sunlight tests removed 82.5% (raw influent) and 50.8% (biologically treated effluent) over 20 h. Scavenger tests and EPR spin-trapping implicate h+ and ˙O2− as dominant species under UV, with ˙OH contributing when H2O2 is present. Five-cycle tests indicate stable activity. The one-pot CoAl-LDH/CoOx heterostructure provides a robust, recyclable platform for interfacial charge-transfer-assisted photocatalysis on realistic effluents and motivates follow-up on mineralization and leaching.

The widespread application of UV/H 2 O 2 is limited by the empirical operational practices, which can lead to excessive energy, chemical input and the generation of uncontrollable by-products. This study presents a precise regulation approach based on the characteristics of free radical generation/reaction and the chemical transformation of organics, assessed through a pilot experiment. The findings indicated that increasing H 2 O 2 dosage was more effective than increasing UV dose in enhancing •OH generation and pollutant removal. As the H 2 O 2 dosage and UV dose increased, the relative influence of water quality on pollutant removal gradually diminished. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the water quality background accounted for the largest proportion of •OH scavenging (76.4 %) and the most complex component. Moreover, changes in operating conditions were accompanied by the uncontrollable production of low-molecular-weight (LMW) DOM. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) revealed the chemical transformation of LMW DOM at the molecular level. Higher H₂O₂ dosages triggered more extensive oxidative degradation, resulting in more complex effluent compositions. Considering treatment efficiency, energy consumption, and effluent product composition, H₂O₂ dosages of 5–10 mg/L and UV doses of 350–450 mJ/cm² were identified as optimal. This research contributes to the efficient purification of organic micropollutants in water using UV/H 2 O 2 technology with low energy consumption, minimal chemical input, and relatively controllable by-products.

Pyridine and organics containing pyridine rings are widely used but persist in the environment and cause toxic pollution. Due to the attraction of the nitrogen atoms to the electrons in the pi bond, the pyridine ring is difficult to oxidize by oxidant. Here, we propose that ultraviolet (UV) irradiation activates the electrons in the pi bond and enables combination with the hydroxyl radical ( OH) originating from hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to eliminate pyridine quickly and mineralize the byproducts. The removal rates of pyridine and total organic carbon (TOC) were compared in different treatments: UV irradiation, UV/H 2 O 2 treatment and Fenton oxidation with different initial pyridine concentrations, pH values and H 2 O 2 concentrations. The UV/H 2 O 2 treatment yielded a higher pyridine removal rate and greater mineralization than the other treatments. The removal rate of pyridine was highest in neutral aqueous solution and H 2 O 2 concentration of 10 mM. At an initial H 2 O 2 concentration of 10 mM, more than 90% of the pyridine was degraded in 10 min, and approximately 70% of the TOC was removed in 60 min. The absorption of UV light at 254 nm by the pi bond of pyridine can accelerate the damage to the stable pyridine structure, especially in the presence of OH. This study provides a promising alternative for the removal and mineralization of pyridine ring-containing materials.

Ultraviolet/persulfate (UV/PS) and Ultraviolet/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H 2 O 2 ) have attracted much attention in recent years as advanced oxidation processes for water treatment. However, it is not all clear how these two methods affect the formation of cyanogen chloride (CNCl) in the subsequent water chlorination process. In this study, it was found that both UV/H 2 O 2 and UV/PS pre-oxidation promoted the formation of CNCl in six actual water samples collected from urban rivers. Glycine, uric acid, arginine and histidine were investigated as the model compounds to explore the effects of different methods on the production of CNCl. The results showed that compared with chlorination alone, pre-oxidation by UV/H 2 O 2 and UV/PS can reduce the production of CNCl for glycine and uric acid by up to 95% during post-chlorination process. However, they can greatly promote the formation of CNCl for arginine and histidine by up to 120-fold. In a more detailed investigation, pre-oxidation of histidine formed highly reactive intermediates to chlorine, leading to increased CNCl formation and chlorine consumption. The results showed that the precursors of CNCl was altered after pre-oxidation, and need to be re-evaluated.

At present, the most commonly used advanced oxidation technology for drinking water treatment has the disadvantage of low utilization rate of oxidant. After research and comparison, the UV/H 2 O 2 /Fe(III) combined process selected in this study can effectively degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in water and improve the utilization rate of hydrogen peroxide. The results showed that the removal rate of SMX by UV/H 2 O 2 /Fe(III) process was 96.7%, and the utilization rate of H 2 O 2 was increased by 25%; the UV/H 2 O 2 /Fe(III) combined process also had a good effect on the degradation of fluorescent components and other organic matter in water; the presence of nitrite ion and humic acid significantly reduced the degradation efficiency of SMX, under the condition of nitrite ion concentration of 5 mg/L or humic acid concentration of 10 mg/L, the removal rate of SMX by UV/H 2 O 2 /Fe(III) combined process decreased by 10.68% or 11.92%, respectively. In terms of mechanism research, the reactivity of SMX molecules was theoretically calculated by density functional theory (DFT), and the atoms with higher contribution rate were calculated, and the degradation products and four degradation pathways of SMX were identified and analyzed by mass spectrometry. Finally, the potential ecological toxicity of SMX and its degradation products was predicted by ECOSAR software and luminescent bacteria experiments; it was found that the toxicity of SMX and its degradation products was relatively high at 15 min.
