Spatially isolated single-site VOx on activated carbon for efficient oxidation of carbohydrates to formic acid

Zhen Zhang,Xiaojian Tian,Yuxiao Sun,Dandan Han,Bang Gu,Dan Wu,Armin Rezayan,Xian Wu,Jingpeng Zhao,Jianshe Wang,Tianliang Lu,Renfeng Nie,Xiaoqin Si,Chunbao Xu,Yongsheng Zhang

Vanadium-based catalysts are widely used in the oxidation of carbohydrates to produce formic acid (FA), a promising liquid organic hydrogen carrier, but still suffers from low yield due to the formation of CO 2 . This study found that the spatially isolated VO x on active carbon (AC) can significantly increase FA yield from 43.5 to 72.9% in glucose oxidation compared with free VO x . Two specific roles of AC were revealed. Firstly, the oxygenated functional groups, high surface area and abundant microporous of AC, play a crucial role in the atomic dispersion of VO x , resulting in a heterogeneous, single-site VO x -AC catalyst. The isolated VO x site favors the oxidative C C bond cleavage in glucose via a stepwise α-cleavage pathway, thus improving FA selectivity. Secondly, the conductive AC acts as an electron buffer, which accelerates the catalytic redox cycle between V 5+ and V 4+ of the isolated VO x sites, thus increasing the reaction activity. The prepared single-site VO x -AC catalyst is reusable and can generate a concentrated FA solution (4.7 wt%) by simple filtration of the solid catalyst. This work presents a simple method for the production of H 2 energy carrier from biomass and provides a fundamental basis for designing efficient catalytic systems for aqueous-phase oxidation reactions.

Particle size effects on silyl-chromate/VOx/silica bimetallic catalyst for UHMWPE/HDPE in-reactor blends

Yu Du,Hang Tao,Yang Yang,Changzhi Su,Junrong Wang,Yongnian Wang,Boping Liu,Yulong Jin

In this work, four kinds of silica with similar textural properties but different particle size (PS) from 6 to 60 μm were selected as support to prepare silyl-chromate/VO x /silica bimetallic catalysts for ethylene polymerization, thus making it possible to conduct convincing investigation on the effects of catalyst PS over catalytic behaviors and polymer properties. It is found, owing to mass- and heat-transfer limitations, the catalysts with smaller PS showed higher initial activity, while the deactivation in the later stage was more remarkable. Meanwhile, catalysts with smaller PS synthesized bimodal ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene/high-density polyethylene in-reactor blends (UHMWPE/HDPE IRBs) with higher molecular weight ( MW ) and narrower molecular weight distribution (MWD). Four PE sample couples with MW increasing from 5 × 10 5 to 10 × 10 5 g mol −1 and PS from 40 to 460 μm were selected for tensile and rheological tests. For each couple with similar MW and MWD, the sample with smaller PS always had larger tensile strength and breaking elongation. The cryogenically fractured surface of the samples made by smaller PE particles showed fewer delamination defects and unfused small particles. The rheological results indicate that higher homogeneity was achieved for the sample with smaller PS, which was reflected by the unexpected higher viscosity and storage modulus.

The Role of V-Species and O-Species on Controlled-Hydrogen-Reduction VOx Surfaces in Cyclohexane Oxidation

Yingwei Li,Shengxin Chen,Ying Jin,Xinxin Li,Ruirui Zhang,Ruixia Liu

Graphical A simple and controllable defect construction method for vanadium-oxygen catalysts through hydrogen reduction with TCD detector were used to control the reduction state of CHR-VOx which determines the V-Species and O-Species. Furthermore, the structure-performance relationship and the catalytic pathway were assumed, multi-liganded-oxygen and V 4+ species are the key parameters. A series of controlled-hydrogen-reduction VO x (CHR-VO x ) were prepared after our controllable hydrogen treatment, and CHR-VO x were controlled to be reduced to the states dominated by V 5+ and V 4+ species, subsequently the catalytic roles of V-species and O-species for cyclohexane (CHA) oxidation were explored. As expected, the surface properties of CHR-VO x have occurred remarkable change resulting in a significantly improvement on catalytic performance determined by V-species and O-species. The reduction behavior of the properties was recognized by XPS and Raman. Generally, the moderate-reduced CHR-VO x which possessed most 78.7 % multi-liganded-oxygen ( L O) performed the best conversion for CHA (11.8 %), and the over-reduced CHR-VO x with a large content of V 4+ species (33 %) performed a best selectivity for adipic acid (44.3 %). In this case, L O sites were regarded as the active site to accelerate the activation of CHA, while V 4+ species were regarded as the oxygen vacancies (OVs) through V 4+ −OV to contribute to the further oxidation to adipic acid.

Peroxidase-mimicking TA-VOx nanobranches for enhanced photothermal/chemodynamic therapy of glioma by inhibiting the expression of HSP60

Qinglong Guo,Mengyuan Yin,Junjuan Fan,Yafei Yang,Tao Liu,Haisheng Qian,Xingliang Dai,Xianwen Wang

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most prevalent malignant brain tumor. It expresses high levels of heat shock protein (HSP60), which is associated with poor prognosis. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) can be improved by photothermal therapy (PTT) and facilitate tumor eradication. Therefore, it is necessary to develop novel agents that synergize with the tumor killing effects of PTT/CDT by downregulating HSP60. Based on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA) databases and clinical cases, this study determined that HSP60 was upregulated and associated with reduced overall survival (OS) in GBM patients. Herein, TA-VO x nanobranches (TA-VO x NBs) were successfully synthesized by a one-step self-assembly procedure, which had excellent photothermal conversion characteristics and improved peroxidase-mimicking activity at elevated temperatures. Moreover, TA-VO x NBs can degrade to VO 2+ in a slightly acidic tumor microenvironment. In vitro and in vivo studies showed that TA-VO x NBs synergized with PTT/CDT and improved glioma eradication under 808 nm irradiation due to the heat-induced ROS generation and the inhibition of HSP60. Furthermore, TA-VO x NBs were rapidly cleared by the kidney and showed good biosafety. Combined with the ease of fabrication, this is a promising nanomaterial that can be introduced for clinical translation in cancer therapy.

Towards One-Pot Synthesis of Trimodal HDPE/UHMWPE In-Reactor Blends by CrOx/VOx/CpCr/SiO2 Tri-Metallic Catalysts

Shiyang Wang,Lijia Ding,Ruotong Chen,Yang Yang,Jianhao Guo,Xiaofeng Xue,Ning Zhao,Yibin Zhan,Tiedong Xie,Boping Liu,Yulong Jin

Trimetallic catalysis provides a potential route for the one-pot production of multimodal PE with balanced mechanical and processing properties. Herein, a series of CrO x /VO x /CpCr/SiO 2 trimetallic catalysts are constructed by grafting CrCp 2 onto a CrO x /VO x /SiO 2 with tunable CrCp 2 loadings and benchmarked against mono- and bimetallic catalysts. FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed successful CrCp 2 immobilization, and the catalyst containing 0.25 wt% CrCp 2 exhibited the highest productivity. Owing to the distinct H 2 sensitivities of the three active sites, both molecular weight (MW) and molecular weight distribution (MWD) can be efficiently regulated through CrCp 2 loading and H 2 partial pressure, enabling the synthesis of tri- or broad-modal PE in a single reactor. Compared with unimodal PE of comparable MW, the trimodal PE exhibited lower melt viscosity and an improved stiffness-toughness balance.

Developing CrOx/VOx/Ind2ZrCl2/Silica/TiBA tri-metallic catalysts for controllable synthesis of trimodal UHMWPE/HDPE in-reactor blends

Shiyang Wang,Liting Wei,Xinglong Zhao,Lantian Li,Yuxin Gao,Shuang Chen,Yang Yang,Boping Liu,Yulong Jin

A series of mono-, bi- and tri-metallic catalysts including Ind 2 ZrCl 2 /silica, CrO x /VO x /silica and CrO x /VO x /Ind 2 ZrCl 2 /silica were synthesized for C 2 H 4 polymerization in this work. The results show that conventional cocatalyst TiBA could hardly activate Ind 2 ZrCl 2 /silica. However, under the assistance of the surface species over CrO x /VO x /silica, traces of TiBA (Al/metal <15, molar ratio) endowed the Zr species with moderate activity. The combined results of XPS, FTIR-pyridine-adsorption and DRS Uv–vis show that the Lewis acidic Cr and V sites could interact with Ind 2 ZrCl 2 and improve the electronic deficiency of Zr center, which is possible to promote zirconocene activation, though direct Si-O-Zr linkage was non-negligible, and redox between Cr(VI)/V(V) and zirconocene existed. The Zr species were responsible for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) synthesis, and the relative content of UHMWPE fractions could be controllably regulated by polymerization temperature, partial pressure of hydrogen and the loading amount of Zr. Generally, these tri-metallic catalysts CrO x /VO x /Ind 2 ZrCl 2 /silica could synthesize trimodal HDPE/UHMWPE in-reactor blends with very broad molecular weight distribution. Meanwhile, owing to the excellent copolymerization ability of zirconcene, preferential distribution of the short chain branches along the ultra-high molecular weight (MW) chains for C 2 H 4 /1-hexene trimodal copolymers was achieved. The rheological results show that the fractions with extreme MW difference in the trimodal polyethylene (PE) exhibited excellent miscibility, and its superiority in processing and mechanical properties over the monomodal PE with similar MW was verified by rheological, tensile and impact tests.

N-Doped VOx@g-C3N4 Based on In Situ Growth for High-Performance Aqueous Zinc Ion Battery Cathode Materials

Changqing Yuan,Haohao Wei,Xiaorong Meng,Han Shen

Vanadium oxides are regarded as one of the most promising cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIB). Among them, vanadium dioxide (VO2) has garnered significant attention due to its unique tunnel structure and superior electrochemical performance. However, VO2 also exhibits certain limitations, such as insufficient stability and poor tolerance to high currents. To enhance the rate capability of VO2, a mixed-valence form of VO2 with improved rate performance was synthesized by adjusting the amount of the reducing agent (i.e., H2C2O4·2H2O). Subsequently, a VO2/g-C3N4 composite material was fabricated using an in situ growth method. Research findings indicate that the rate capability and stability of VO2 are markedly enhanced upon combination with g-C3N4. This improvement is attributed to the protective effect of g-C3N4 on VO2. Moreover, the g-C3N4 synthesized via the solid-state method features a porous structure, which facilitates the normal intercalation and deintercalation of Zn2+ ions, providing numerous pathways for Zn2+ movement. Additionally, EDS-mapping images reveal that nitrogen (N) elements from g-C3N4 are successfully doped into VO2 nanorods. The incorporation of N elements significantly boosts the conductivity and ionic diffusion of the composite. The resulting material achieves an exceptionally high specific capacity of 500.18 mAh/g at the current density of 0.2 A/g, and it maintains a specific capacity of 282.54 mAh/g even at a high current density of 10 A/g. After 10,000 charge–discharge cycles, the capacity retention rate remains as high as 87.33% at 10 A/g, demonstrating a substantial improvement in both rate capability and cycling stability. This study provides compelling evidence for the application of mixed-valence vanadium oxides as cathode materials for AZIB and offers valuable insights into the development of vanadium oxide composite materials.

Electrochemically induced amorphous and porous VOx/N-doped carbon spheres as a cathode for advanced aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Jujun Yuan,Yunfei Gan,jirong Mou,Xiangdong Ma,Xiaokang Li,Junxia Meng,Lishuang Xu,Xianke Zhang,Haishan He,Jun Liu

Vanadium-based oxides have captured considerable attention as ZIB cathodes benefiting from their rich valences and superior theoretical capacity. However, vanadium-based oxides still suffer from structural instability, low electronic conductivity, and slow reaction dynamics, which will lead to poor zinc ion storage performance. Herein, amorphous VOx/NC porous spheres were fabricated by in situ, electrochemically-induced vanadium-polydopamine-derived crystalline V2O3/NC porous spheres. As a zinc-ion battery cathode, the VOx/NC porous spheres exhibit a sustainable capacity of 233 mA h g−1 at 5 A g−1 upon 1500 cycles and superior rate property. The excellent electrochemical performance of the VOx/NC porous-sphere electrode is ascribed to its distinctive architecture. The VOx/NC porous spheres possess amorphous VOx with a higher oxidation states of V5+/V4+, which can increase the theoretical energy density, provide more active sites, and improve Zn2+ diffusion kinetics. Furthermore, VOx/NC porous spheres with a porous core–shell architecture can enhance electrical conductivity and ensure electrolyte accessibility. This synthesis strategy can be potentially extended to fabricate other VOx/carbon composites with high valence states (V5+ and V4+).

Selective Hydrogenation of Methyl Palmitate to Cetyl Alcohol via Ternary Synergistic Catalysis of Ni, Oxygen Vacancies, and Lewis Acid Sites under Mild Reaction Conditions

Xincheng Cao,Feng Long,Gaoyue Zhang,Junming Xu,Jianchun Jiang

Selective hydrogenation of fatty esters into high-value-added fatty alcohols over non-noble-metal (e.g., Ni and Co) catalysts is highly desirable for the utilization of natural oils. Although these catalysts offer high hydrogenation activity and are reasonably economical, they suffer from low hydrodeoxygenation activity at low temperatures while promoting certain side reactions (e.g., C–C bond hydrogenolysis and decarbonylation/decarboxylation) at high temperatures, which are undesirable for the production of fatty alcohols. In this study, we tested and optimized the performance of Ni metal catalysts with various metal–oxide modifiers and supports for the selective hydrogenation of methyl palmitate to cetyl alcohol. The most efficient catalytic system (Ni-VOx/TiO2, Ni:V ≈ 1:1, mol/mol) achieved almost quantitative conversion with 90% selectivity for cetyl alcohol under mild conditions (220 °C and 4.0 MPa of H2), which was ascribed to the ternary synergistic action of Ni, oxygen vacancies, and Lewis acid sites. The catalytic synergy of the Ni metal and oxygen vacancies (formed by the reduction of TiO2) was primarily responsible for C–O bond cleavage in methyl palmitate to form palmitic aldehyde as the main intermediate. Furthermore, the V species engaged in metal–Lewis acid cooperation at the metal–oxide interface to efficiently promote the C═O bond hydrogenation of palmitic aldehyde and suppress the undesired C–C bond cleavage, thereby facilitating the highly selective production of cetyl alcohol. The obtained insights into the active phase of Ni-VOx/TiO2 catalysts are expected to facilitate the development of highly efficient catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of fatty esters and other biomass-derived compounds containing C═O/C–O groups.

Influence of gelation and calcination temperature on the structure-performance of porous VOX-SiO2 solids in non-oxidative propane dehydrogenation

Ping Hu,Wan-Zhong Lang,Xi Yan,Lian-Feng Chu,Ya-Jun Guo

VO X -doped porous SiO 2 solids (VO X -SiO 2 ) were synthesized at different gelation and calcination temperatures through an in-situ one-step synthesis and evaluated by non-oxidative propane dehydrogenation (PDH), exhibiting excellent catalytic performance. VO X -SiO 2 catalysts were characterized by XRD, low-temperature N 2 adsorption/desorption, SEM, TEM, UV–Vis, Raman, XPS, NH 3 -TPD, H 2 -TPR, and TGA. The structural and performance results for the catalysts reveal that gelation temperature has only a slight effect on the surface acidity, textural properties and VO X species dispersion of VO X -SiO 2 catalysts within a reasonable temperature range (30–60 °C). The 60-VO X -SiO 2 -580 catalyst, with a gelation temperature of 60 °C, a calcination temperature of 580 °C, and prepared by the one-step synthesis method, obviously shortens gelation process time by half compared to catalyst gelled at 30 °C and exhibits superior catalytic performance for PDH . Over high gelation temperature (≥75 °C) leads to the loss of integrity and decreases catalytic activity of the VO X -SiO 2 catalysts. Compared with the VO X -MCM-41 catalyst prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method, VO X -SiO 2 catalysts exhibit better catalytic activity and stability. Importantly, at a reaction temperature of 580 °C, the 60-VO X -SiO 2 -580 catalyst exhibits remarkable long-term catalytic stability in the eight reaction-regeneration cycles for PDH. Its propane conversion shows a slow decrease from 55% to 45% for a 4 h reaction duration, but the propene selectivity remains at approximately 91%. The results of this work will be beneficial for further industrial development and application of porous VO X -SiO 2 solids in catalysis.

Core-regenerated vapor–solid growth of hierarchical stem-like VOx nanocrystals on VO2@TiO2 core–shell nanorods: microstructure and mechanism

Yamei Li,Shidong Ji,Yanfeng Gao,Hongjie Luo,Shaotang Li,Meng Jiang,Yijie Zhou,Rong Li,Bingbing Wang,Ping Jin

This paper presents a novel vapor–solid growth approach of stem-like 1D vanadium oxide nanostructures in a core-regenerated fashion on VO2@TiO2 core–shell rods under a very low temperature (400 °C). The composition and microstructure of the as-grown nanostructures were analyzed by HRTEM, EDS and XPS, confirming the vapor–solid mechanism. The confinement effect of the shell was analyzed by varying experimental parameters (coating thickness and heating rate), and the shell was found to play a critical role in generating and accumulating vapor with supersaturated concentration for the nanocrystal nucleation. Additionally, PVP was added as a surface modifier to favor the growth, probably by forming carbonaceous/nitrogen gaseous species as carrier media, as deduced by FTIR analysis. By exploring the impact of different heating rates, we found that the mass transfer process was facilitated only using a relatively high heating rate (>1.33 °C s−1). However, such a growth was still limited only within the early stages (~15 min), because the confined vacuum interface will disappear with the progress of the crystallization of the nanoporous anatase shell. A unique 1D rods to 2D nano-flakes evolution can be achieved by increasing the heating rate from 1.3 °C s−1 to over 8 °C s−1. These findings provide a valuable understanding on the thermodynamics and kinetics during an unique VS based nanocrystal growing process, and also showed a new method to obtain hierarchical heterogeneous nanostructures.

Synergistic Elimination of NOx and Chlorinated Organics over VOx/TiO2 Catalysts: A Combined Experimental and DFT Study for Exploring Vanadate Domain Effect

Shuaiying Zhai,Yuetan Su,Xiaole Weng,Renna Li,Haiqiang Wang,Zhongbiao Wu

Vanadium-based catalysts have been extensively applied for the synergistic control of NOx and chlorinated organics. However, how the vanadia species affect the reaction activity and products distribution, and what are the dominant reaction sites of these vanadia species are still unknown. Herein, we investigated the reaction characteristics of monomeric and polymeric vanadate domains for the catalytically synergistic elimination of NOx and chlorobenzene (CB). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental investigations have been combined to clarify the effects of different vanadyl species on the synergistic reaction. It was noted that the main adsorption site of CB on the monomeric domain was V–OH bond, and that on the polymeric one was V═O bond. The monomeric vanadyl was favorable for converting the Lewis V═O into Brønsted V–OH, which provided sufficient H protons for HCl formation, whereas the polymeric species could effectively retain the V4+/V5+ redox cycle, and yielded superior activity in CB catalytic oxidation (CBCO) reaction. However, the abundant oxygen vacancies and the inclined accumulation of Cl by forming the V–Cl bands led to significant polychlorinated byproducts on the polymeric vanadyl catalysts. Our work gives the first insight into different vanadate domain effects on the synergistic reaction, and is expected to provide theoretical basis for efficient design of the vanadium-based catalysts toward multipollutants elimination.
