Controlled construction of 3D self-assembled VS4 nanoarchitectures as high-performance anodes for sodium-ion batteries

Wenbin Li,Jianfeng Huang,Liyun Cao,Liangliang Feng,Chunyan Yao

Developing desirable anode materials with 3D self-assembled structure is of paramount importance for enhancing the performance of sodium-ion batteries. Here, we report the controlled synthesis of three novel 3D VS 4 nanoarchitectures: nanorods (Nanorod-VS 4 ), nanocones and nanobelts self-assembled VS 4 microspheres . When serving as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries, Nanorod-VS 4 exhibits the better electrochemical performances than the latter two, delivering a high reversible capacity of 225 mAhg −1  at 0.5 Ag -1 after 200 cycles and that of 203 and 168 mAhg −1 even at 1.0 and 2.0 Ag -1 , respectively. The remarkable sodium storage properties of the Nanorod-VS 4 material is mainly ascribed to the synergistic effect of the self-assembled structure of radial nanorods and the preferred orientation growth along (110) planes. Moreover, the reversible insertion reaction and diffusion-dominant Na + storage process between 0.50 and 3.00 V occurring in the Nanorod-VS 4 are clearly revealed.

One-pot solvothermal method to fabricate 1D-VS4 nanowires as anode materials for lithium ion batteries

Yingfeng Dong,Xiao-qing Du,Pei Liang,Xiao-lei Man

1D-VS 4 nanorods have been successfully fabricated through a simple facial solvothermal method for the first time. SEM, Raman spectrum, FTIR and UV–vis are adopted to investigate the morphology, structure and composition of prepared nanocomposites, and results show that obtained VS 4 is presented as uniform nanorods and is mainly composed by monoclinic VS 4 with high crystallinity and purity. Moreover, these prepared VS 4 nanorods have a uniform morphology as well as a small crystal size of 1–2 µm and a diameter of 20–60 nm. Electrochemical properties of VS 4 nanorods as anode electrodes have shown VS 4 is great in electrical conductivity, rate performance and service life. The first discharge has its specific capacity reaching 574.3 mAh g −1 at the current density of 200 mA g −1 , and the reversible residual specific capacity could be retained to 439.3 mAh g −1 after 120 cycles. When current density is increased to 2 A g −1 , the remaining capacity still remained as 267.3 mAh g −1 , indicating good conductivity and excellent rate performance in VS 4 based LIB. The small internal impedance (100 O) also indicates that the VS 4 nanorod anode has a high conductivity, thus its superior electrochemical performance is promoted. Finally, we have carried out DFT calculations to explain how Li ions have been inserted into bulk and 1D-VS4 nanorods; and the fast Li ion migration in the 1D-VS4 nanorods with the NEB barrier is only 138.5 meV, and also the strong absorption ensures its excellent electrochemical performance.

Oxygen-Doped VS4 Microspheres with Abundant Sulfur Vacancies as a Superior Electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Jun Xu,Bansui Yu,Han Zhao,Shoufu Cao,Lingling Song,Kun Xing,Ru Zhou,Xiaoqing Lu

In this work, one-dimensional chainlike structured vanadium tetrasulfide (VS4) with rich defects has been demonstrated as an advanced electrocatalyst for an efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The VS4 microspheres featuring oxygen doping and abundant sulfur vacancies are synthesized by a simple solution method. The O-doping and S-vacancy offer the VS4 with a dramatically narrowed band gap and an improved intrinsic electronic conductivity, benefitting for fast charge transport during the HER process. Furthermore, the rich defects of sulfur vacancies and oxygen heteroatoms provide more active sites with high activity for catalyzing protons to hydrogen reaction. Owing to the synergistic effects of defect engineering and electronic benefits, the VS4 microspheres serve as a superior HER catalyst surpassing the 1T-VS2 microflowers with a layered structure. The VS4 microsphere catalyst exhibits prominent kinetic metrics of a low onset potential of 15 mV, a low overpotential of 48 mV at 10 mA cm–2, a small Tafel slope of 44 mV dec–1, and a stable long-term operation of 75 h. This work paves a new pathway to improve the electrocatalytic activity of HER catalysts by synergistically modulating their defects and electronic structures.

Highly Branched VS4 Nanodendrites with 1D Atomic-Chain Structure as a Promising Cathode Material for Long-Cycling Magnesium Batteries

Yanrong Wang,Ziteng Liu,Caixing Wang,Xu Yi,Renpeng Chen,Lianbo Ma,Yi Hu,Guoyin Zhu,Tao Chen,Zuoxiu Tie,Jing Ma,Jie Liu,Zhong Jin

Rechargeable magnesium batteries have attracted increasing attention due to the high theoretical volumetric capacities, dendrite formation-free characteristic and low cost of Mg metal anodes. However, the development of magnesium batteries is seriously hindered by the lack of capable cathode materials with long cycling life and fast solid-state diffusion kinetics for highly-polarized divalent Mg 2+ ions. Herein, vanadium tetrasulfide (VS 4 ) with special one-dimensional atomic-chain structure is reported to be able to serve as a favorable cathode material for high-performance magnesium batteries. Through a surfactant-assisted solution-phase process, sea-urchin-like VS 4 nanodendrites are controllably prepared. Benefiting from the chain-like crystalline structure of VS 4 , the S 2 2- dimers in the VS 4 nanodendrites provide abundant sites for Mg 2+ insertion. Moreover, the VS 4 atomic-chains bonded by weak van der Waals forces are beneficial to the diffusion kinetics of Mg 2+ ions inside the open channels of VS 4 . Through a series of systematic ex situ characterizations and density functional theory calculations, the magnesiation/demagnesiation mechanism of VS 4 are elucidated. The VS 4 nanodendrites present remarkable performance for Mg 2+ storage among existing cathode materials, exhibiting a remarkable initial discharge capacity of 251 mAh g -1 at 100 mA g -1 and an impressive long-term cyclability at large current density of 500 mA g -1 (74 mAh g -1 after 800 cycles).

Formation of hierarchical Ni3S2 nanohorn arrays driven by in-situ generation of VS4 nanocrystals for boosting alkaline water splitting

Dan Yang,Liyun Cao,Liangliang Feng,Jianfeng Huang,Koji Kajiyoshi,Yongqiang Feng,Qianqian Liu,Wenbin Li,Li Feng,Guojuan Hai

The synergistic achievement of geometric optimization and surface/interfacial modulation of electrocatalysts for booting the overall efficiency of water splitting is highly desirable yet challenging. Herein, a novel hierarchical Ni 3 S 2 /VS 4 nanohorn array grown on nickel foam (NS-horn/NF) is prepared by a self-driven synthesis strategy. We demonstrate that in-situ generation of VS 4 in the NS-horn/NF not only triggers the formation of such unique hierarchical architecture, but favors the graft of enriched active bridging S 2 2− on the strong coupling interface between Ni 3 S 2 and VS 4 , and thus the enhanced HER kinetics. More importantly, the abundant active nickel oxides for the OER availably form on the interface benefiting from the surface reconstruction of NS-horn/NF due to the partial leaching of vanadium (IV) of VS 4 , which promotes the adsorption of OH − and leads to the fast OER rate-determining step in alkaline media. When employed to assemble an alkaline electrolyzer as both anode and cathode, NS-horn/NF electrode only needs a small voltage of 1.57 V to yield 10 mA cm −2 and retains this activity for at least 70 h. Our findings put forward fresh insights into the rational design of highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts toward water spitting for next-generation energy conversion and storage devices.

Synthesis of VS4 and VO on carbon nanofibers for back interface modification in HTL free CsPbBr3-based perovskite solar cells

Xi Wang,Yujie Gao,Jianing Guo,Mingxing Wu

Carbon-based hole transport layer (HTL)-free all-inorganic perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) exhibit advantages of simplified preparation procedure, high stability, and low cost, showcasing significant application potential. Nonetheless, the development of C-PSCs requires overcoming challenges such as the misalignment of energy levels between carbon counter electrode and the CsPbBr₃ perovskite, abundant defects at the perovskite/carbon back interface, and the carbon counter electrode's low conductivity. Herein, VS₄ and VO-deposited carbon nanofibers (CNF), termed VS₄@CNF and VO@CNF respectively, have been synthesized to adjust the work function and improve the conductivity of the carbon counter electrode. CsPbBr₃-based C-PSCs employing VS₄@CNF and VO@CNF as counter electrodes yield power conversion efficiencies of 7.88 % and 8.80 %, indicating great PCE enhancements of 15.4 % and 28.8 % as compared with the device with unmodified CNF counter electrodes. This improvement is attributed to the optimized conductivity and adjusted work function of the counter electrodes, which can optimize the energy level alignment, thereby enhancing charge carrier extraction and transport while effectively inhibiting recombination. Furthermore, VS₄@CNF and VO@CNF demonstrate a notable passivation effect on defects at the back interface. This study offers a valuable path for the design of novel carbon counter electrodes and the modification of the back interface in carbon-based all-inorganic C-PSCs.

Polyaniline-coated VS4@rGO nanocomposite as high-performance cathode material for magnesium batteries based on Mg2+/Li+ dual ion electrolytes

Jing Pengcheng,Lu Huimin,Yang Wenwen,Cao Yuan,Xu Binbin,Cai Wei,Deng Yan

Magnesium batteries based on Mg 2+ /Li + dual ion electrolytes (MLIBs) have attracted increasing attention due to fast Li + or Mg 2+ /Li + insertion kinetics, abundant Mg resources, and high volumetric capacity of dendrite-free Mg anodes. Herein, we report polyaniline (PANI)–coated VS 4 @reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with nanostructures synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis and subsequent PANI polymerization as the cathode material for MLIBs. The PANI layer serves as a conductive medium to enhance electron transfer and Mg 2+ /Li + transportation as well as to mitigate the structure changes of VS 4 during the cycling process. Indeed, this material demonstrates enhanced electrochemical performance with a high discharge capacity of 200.7 mAh g −1 after 20 cycles and 91.2% retention after 50 cycles. Mechanism analysis reveals that Li + insertion into VS 4 produced an amorphous VS 4 host in the first discharge, which inclined to store Mg 2+ rather than Li + in the subsequent cycles. Our study provides new insights into the development of amorphous electrode materials for magnesium batteries.
