Vacuum-Ultraviolet (VUV), an efficient and green method to produce hydroxyl radical (•OH), is effective in degrading numerous organic contaminants in aqueous solution. Here, we proposed an effective and simple kinetic model to describe the degradation of organic pollutants in VUV system, by taking the •OH scavenging effects of formed organic intermediates as co-existing organic matter in whole. Using benzoic acid (BA) as a •OH probe, •OH was regarded vital for pollutant degradation in VUV system, and the thus developed model successfully predicted its degradation kinetics under different conditions. Effects of typical influencing factors such as BA concentrations and UV intensity were investigated quantitatively by the model. Temperature was found to be an important influencing factor in the VUV system, and the quantum yield of •OH showed a positive linear dependence on temperature. Impacts of humic acid (HA), alkalinity, chloride, and water matrices (realistic waters) on the oxidation efficiency were also examined. BA degradation was significantly inhibited by HA due to its scavenging of •OH, but was influenced much less by the alkalinity and chloride; high oxidation efficiency was still obtained in the realistic water. The degradation kinetics of three other typical micropollutants including bisphenol A (BPA), nitrobenzene (NB) and dimethyl phthalate (DMP), and the mixture of co-existing BA, BPA and DMP were further studied, and the developed model predicted the experimental data well, especially in realistic water. It is expected that this study will provide an effective approach to predict the degradation of organic micropollutants by the promising VUV system, and broaden the application of VUV system in water treatment .

Bisphenol A (BPA) is regarded as a hazardous pollutant that exists widely in aquatic environments, posing a severe threat to human health. In this study, a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) lamp emitting a hybrid of 254 nm and 185 nm light was used to degrade BPA. Results indicated that photolysis via 254 nm wavelength accounted for 24.93% for BPA decay, while indirect oxidation was responsible for 52.27% of decay. Results confirmed that the degradation of BPA under VUV illumination mainly occurred via photo-excited degradation and ·OH electrophilic addition reactions based on average local ionization energy (ALIE) calculation and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Therefore, only light with a wavelength of 254 nm was able to induce the first three excited states of BPA, forming the electron transition type of n → π* from O atom to a single benzene ring and π → π* in the single benzene ring. Indirect oxidation by ·OH occurred as it preferentially attacked the C6 atom in BPA ring A. Moreover, the energy required for photo-excited degradation was about twofold than that of ·OH electrophilic addition reactions.

Elucidating the effects of anthropogenic pollutants on the formation mechanism of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is crucial for the improvement of atmospheric models toward the development of effective control strategies. It is extremely challenging to precisely clarify the impacts of concentrations of anthropogenic pollutants on the molecular compositions and particle number/mass concentrations of SOA under complicated conditions. Here, we report a series of the studies on the effects of anthropogenic pollutants (NO 2 and SO 2 ) on the photooxidation of a representative monoterpene , Δ 3 -carene, by using the scanning mobility particle sizer spectrometer, recently-developed vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser (VUV-FEL) photoionization aerosol mass spectrometry , and quantum chemical calculations . The results indicated that with the increase of NO 2 concentration, the SOA yields increased under low-NO 2 conditions but decreased under high-NO 2 conditions. The OH radical was found to be the primary oxidant under low-NO 2 conditions, whereas O 3 became the dominant oxidant under high-NO 2 conditions. SO 2 substantially enhanced the formation of highly oxidized molecules via the acid-catalyzed pathway. A series of new compounds (i.e., organic peroxides , organic nitrates, and organosulfates) were observed and their formation mechanisms were proposed. The present findings highlight the critical role of anthropogenic pollutants in the photooxidation of monoterpene under low and high pollution environments and also open new avenues toward systematic studies of a broader class of volatile organic compounds .

BACKGROUND: Identifying endogenous volatile organic compounds
(VOCs) as markers for different cancers currently requires time-consuming
procedures and specialized operators. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to develop a rapid and
simple method for measuring VOCs at trace levels. METHODS: A simple vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass
spectrometer (VUV-PIMS) was used to detect trace levels of dimethyl
trisulfide (DMTS), dimethyl sulfide (DMS), and 2-butanone, which correspond
to volatile biomarker candidates present in the exhaled breath of patients
with breast, liver, and lung cancers, respectively. The practicality of
measuring endogenous VOCs using VUV-PIMS was confirmed by detecting them in
cultured cell lines. RESULTS: The abovementioned VOCs were detected with high
sensitivity by VUV-PIMS. The limits of detection (LODs) for DMTS, DMS, and
2-butanone were 3.1, 3.9, and 23.2 pptv, respectively, under ambient
conditions, which surpass the sensitivity of nearly all other MS-based
techniques. Moreover, relatively high concentrations of 2-butanone and DMS
were observed in VOCs emitted from the A549 lung cancer cell line and the
HepG2 liver cancer cell line, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our
results show that VUV-PIMS may serve as a reliable method for real-time
measurement of endogenous volatile cancer biomarkers.

Antibiotic residues in water present significant ecological and public health challenges, necessitating the development of efficient advanced oxidation processes. The present study investigated a novel vacuum ultraviolet/ultraviolet/persulfate (VUV/UV/PS) process for degrading sulfamethazine (SMN), a representative sulfonamide antibiotic, in water. SMN degradation was assessed under UV, UV/PS, VUV/UV, and VUV/UV/PS conditions. All processes exhibited pseudo-first-order kinetics, with apparent rate constants of 0.12, 0.28, 0.25, and 0.52 min‒1, respectively. The VUV/UV/PS process achieved near-complete SMN removal (99.4%) within 10 min, surpassing the performance of UV/PS (94.4%) and VUV/UV (91.7%). Quenching by tert-butanol and methanol decreased the apparent rate constant to 0.31 and 0.16 min‒1, respectively, indicating the contributions of both hydroxyl radicals and sulfate radicals. The degradation rate increased with persulfate concentration but approached saturation above 5 mM. Higher initial SMN concentrations inhibited the reaction kinetics, while mildly acidic conditions enhanced degradation. Chloride and sulfate had minimal effects, whereas nitrate, bicarbonate, and particularly natural organic matter significantly inhibited degradation. Analysis of transformation products indicated three concurrent pathways: N–S bond cleavage, hydroxylation, and oxidation, followed by further oxidation of intermediates. These findings demonstrate the VUV/UV/PS process as a rapid and mechanistically robust approach for SMN removal in water treatment.

Metformin (MET), widely used in the treatment of type П diabetes, may pose a threat to environmental security when extensively used and improperly disposed of. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive and deeper understanding of MET decomposition under UV 185 (vacuum ultraviolet, VUV) photolytic treatment in the presence of sulfite (SO 3 2− ). A noticeable MET decomposition efficiency of 98.3 % was observed at pH 9, accompanied by a fast pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.0459 min −1 in the VUV/SO 3 2− treatment system. Radical scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis confirmed that MET decomposition was primarily initiated by the attack of hydrated electron (e aq − ) generated from SO 3 2− under VUV irradiation. Time-of-flight mass spectrometry results, supported by density functional theory and wave function analysis, indicated four parallel pathways for the reductive decomposition of MET in the VUV/SO 3 2− treatment system. Demethylation and scission of C N bonds within the guanidine moiety were identified as the primary mechanisms underlying MET decomposition in this system. A substantial reduction in MET biotoxicity was observed following treatment using the VUV/SO 3 2− reduction system. The effects of treatment parameters and common water matrix components were meticulously investigated.

As one of the most reactive species, hydrated electron (e aq − ) is promising for reductive decomposition of recalcitrant organic pollutants, such as perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). In this study, PFOS decomposition using a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)/sulfite system was systematically investigated in comparison with sole VUV and ultraviolet (UV)/sulfite systems. A fast and nearly complete (97.3%) PFOS decomposition was observed within 4 h from its initial concentration of 37.2 μM in the VUV/sulfite system. The observed rate constant ( k obs ) for PFOS decomposition in the studied system was 0.87 ± 0.0060 h − 1 , which was nearly 7.5 and 2 folds faster than that in sole VUV and UV/sulfite systems, respectively. Compared to previously studied UV/sulfite system, VUV/sulfite system enhanced PFOS decomposition in both weak acidic and alkaline pH conditions. In weak acidic condition (pH 6.0), PFOS predominantly decomposed via direct VUV photolysis, whereas in alkaline condition (pH > 9.0), PFOS decomposition was mainly induced by e aq − generated from both sulfite and VUV photolytic reactions. At a fixed initial solution pH (pH 10.0), PFOS decomposition kinetics showed a positive linear dependence with sulfite dosage. The co-presence of humic acid (HA) and NO 3 − obviously suppressed PFOS decomposition, whereas HCO 3 – showed marginal inhibition. A few amount of short chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) were detected in PFOS decomposition process, and a high defluorination efficiency (75.4%) was achieved. These results suggested most fluorine atoms in PFOS molecule ultimately mineralized into fluoride ions, and the mechanisms for PFOS decomposition in the VUV/sulfite system were proposed.

Diethyl phthalate (DEP) is a commonly utilized plasticizer that has gained significant attention due to its widespread occurrence in the environment and its harmful impact on human health. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate and compare several (ultraviolet) UV-(peracetic acid) PAA advanced oxidation processes based on hydroxyl radicals to degrade DEP. The effect of UV-LEDs incorporating PAA at different UV ranges (UV-A, λ = 365 nm; UV-C, λ = 254 nm and VUV, λ = 254 nm) was evaluated. The results demonstrated that DEP was successfully degraded in both the UVC/PAA (removal rate 98.28%) and VUV/PAA (removal rate 97.72%) processes compared to the UVA/PAA process (removal rate of 2.71%). The competitive method evaluated the contribution of R-O•, which were 24.08% and 33.92% in UVC/PAA and VUV/PAA processes, respectively. We also evaluated the effects of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) dosages, UV irradiation, pH and anion coexistence on the removal of DEP. In the UVC/PAA system, DEP degradation was particularly effective (removal rate about 95.52%) over a wider pH range (3–9). As the concentration of HCO3−ions increased, there may have been some inhibition of DEP removal. The inhibitory effect of HA and Cl−ions on DEP removal were negligible. Analysis of the intermediates revealed that DEP degradation primarily occurred via two pathways: hydrolysis and hydroxylation reactions. This study presents a potential mnethod for the removal of phthalates and offers some guidance for the selection of appropriate disinfection technologies in drinking water treatment.

Vacuum ultraviolet/periodate (VUV/PI) was proposed to pretreat secondary effluent. • VUV/PI oxidation pretreatment achieved a 48% removal of DOC in secondary effluent. • VUV/PI pretreatment increased the flux of ultrafiltration membrane by 82.8%. • VUV/PI mitigated surface fouling by reducing pollutant concentration and adhesion. • • OH, 1 O 2 , and O 3 were the primary reactive species to degrade BPA in VUV/PI. Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane fouling caused by dissolved organic matter from secondary effluent is a thorny problem. To address this issue, this study constructs a vacuum ultraviolet/periodate (VUV/PI) advanced oxidation pretreatment system. The synergistic system operates via direct photolysis of water and indirect oxidation, while VUV enhances the activation efficiency compared with conventional UV. Following VUV/PI pretreatment, fluorescent components in the water samples were reduced. The DOC removal rate reached 48%, indicating that the natural organic matters, the dominant membrane foulants in secondary effluent, was partially eliminated. The terminal specific flux was effectively improved by 82.8%, and the total fouling resistance decreased by 60%. The reactive species generated by VUV radiation activation of PI, such as • OH, 1 O 2 , and O 3 , contributed to organic matter degradation; concurrently, the interfacial free energy between contaminants and membrane surface decreased from −55.22 to −40.98 mJ/m 2 , which also reduced the attractive force between them in part. The results indicate that the VUV/PI system can effectively improve effluent water quality and significantly mitigate membrane fouling. This study provides an efficient pretreatment technology for UF membrane fouling control in the advanced treatment of secondary effluent. Surfactants are increasingly used in systems that come into contact with the human body, such as food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and personal hygiene products. Increasing attention is being devoted to the toxic effects of surfactants in various human contact formulations, as well as the removal of residual surfactants. In the presence of ozone (O3), anion surfactants—a characteristic micro-pollutant—such as sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) in greywater, can be removed using radical advanced oxidation. Herein, we report a systematic study of the SDBS degradation effect of O3activated by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation and the influence of water composition on VUV/O3, and determined the contribution of radical species. We show a synergistic effect of VUV and O3, while VUV/O3reached a higher mineralization (50.37%) than that of VUV (10.63%) and O3(29.60%) alone. The main reactive radicals of VUV/O3were HO•. VUV/O3had an optimal pH of 9. The addition of SO42−had almost no effect on the degradation of SDBS by VUV/O3, Cl−and HCO3−slightly reduced the reaction rate, and NO3−had a significant inhibition on the degradation. In total, SDBS had three isomers, with which the three degradation pathways were very comparable. Compared with SDBS, the toxicity and harmfulness of the degradation by-products of the VUV/O3process decreased. Additionally, VUV/O3could degrade synthetic anion surfactants from laundry greywater effectively. Overall, the results show the potential of VUV/O3in safeguarding humans from residual surfactant hazards. Keywords:ozone;surfactants;toxicological analysis;vacuum ultraviolet

In recent years, the pervasive presence of antibiotics in surface water and their potential ecological risks have garnered significant attention. The advanced oxidation system of a dual-wavelength UV (VUV/UVC) synergistic peroxymonosulfate (PMS) has been employed as a potential technology for removing organic pollutants from water. The VUV/UVC/PMS process entails the irradiation of PMS with VUV (185 nm) and UVC (254 nm) to concurrently generate hydroxyl radicals (·OH), sulfate radicals (SO 4 ·- ), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). This process has markedly enhanced pefloxacin (PEF) and levofloxacin (LEV) degradation efficiency. The experimental findings suggest that the VUV/UVC/PMS system attains optimal degradation of PEF and LEV under conditions of low initial PEF and LEV concentrations, elevated initial PMS concentration, elevated reaction temperature, and an initial pH of 11. In this system, ·OH, SO 4 ·- , and 1 O 2 are the main active species responsible for the degradation of LEV, contributing 84.46%, 5.52%, and 7.98%, respectively. Through EEM spectra and high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis, the degradation pathways of PEF and LEV were inferred, and the synergistic mechanism between VUV and PMS was revealed. A comparison of the individual processes with the VUV/UVC/PMS system showed a significant reduction in energy consumption, with PEF degradation energy consumption decreasing by 7.58%-41.87% and LEV degradation energy consumption decreasing by 2.7%-76.34%. The study indicates that the VUV/UVC/PMS system possesses the advantages of high efficiency, low energy consumption, and simple operation, making it a green and sustainable process for treating antibiotic pollution in surface water.

Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) enables spatial mapping of chemical distributions across complex surfaces, with broad applications spanning materials analysis, life sciences, and clinical diagnostics. However, conventional ionization sources often suffer from limited ionization efficiency, creating a trade-off between detection sensitivity and spatial resolution. Post-ionization technology addresses this constraint by incorporating a secondary ionization step, significantly enhancing ionization yield and establishing itself as a leading approach for advancing mass spectrometry techniques. In this study, we have independently developed a vacuum ultraviolet-laser desorption post-ionization mass spectrometry (VUV-LDPI-MS) system, which significantly enhances detection sensitivity through the implementation of post-ionization technology. By integrating low-photon-energy long-wavelength laser desorption with the soft-ionizing capability of VUV light, this technique enhances the detection of chemical species within biological tissues—including both exogenous drugs and endogenous metabolites. The method achieved a theoretical detection limit of 8.3 pg/spot for methylene blue (MB), while markedly reducing substrate effects and sample background interference. Imaging results revealed that endogenous compounds closely aligned with zebrafish tissue anatomy, whereas the spatial distribution of exogenous MB strongly correlated with optical images. Successful application to zebrafish tissue sections enabled clear visualization of both MB and intrinsic metabolites. VUV-LDPI-MSI offers superior ionization efficiency with minimal sample preparation, presenting a robust alternative to conventional LDI-MS approaches and holding considerable promise for future technological development.
