Transparent YAG:Ce ceramic with designed low light scattering for high-power blue LED and LD applications

Qiang-Qiang Zhu,Shuxing Li,Qiang Yuan,Hong Zhang,Le Wang

Yellow-emitting YAG:Ce transparent ceramic is recognized as an ideal color converter in high-power blue LEDs and LDs , but the absence of scattering centers in its microstructure leads to a low light extraction efficiency and poor light uniformity. Here, taking advantage of the scattering effect and the transparency of YAG:Ce ceramics, Ce-free YAG phase was used as a second component to form a composite with YAG:Ce phosphor. The sintered YAG:Ce-YAG ceramic possessed a high transparency of ∼63 % and a thermal conductivity of 8.9 Wm −1 K −1 . Due to its beneficial thermal properties and high external quantum efficiency of 70.2 %, the YAG:Ce-YAG ceramic could be excited under a high blue-laser flux density of up to 9.60 W/mm 2 and showed a luminous emittance of 1220 lm/mm 2 . Due to light scattering arising from the slightly different refractive indices of the two phases, the designed YAG:Ce-YAG ceramic showed better lighting effects than a single-phase transparent YAG:Ce ceramic.

Synthesis of cerium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG:Ce) phosphors via citric acid-assisted aerosol spray pyrolysis

Sichao Chen,Xiang Zhang,Ting Yao,Keke Wang,Lei Cao,Shixian Xiong

In this study, cerium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG:Ce) phosphors were synthesized via citric acid-assisted aerosol spray pyrolysis to optimize their luminescent properties for white light-emitting diode (LED) applications. Precursor solutions formulated with nitrates and citric acid were atomized and subsequently calcined at 1000 °C, yielding hollow spherical particles with an average diameter of 700-800 nm. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that pure cubic YAG phase was formed above 800 °C. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations disclosed the porous hollow morphology of the particles. By adjusting the Ce 3+ doping concentration (0.01%-3%), it was found that doping concentrations of 1-2% exhibited the strongest emission intensity under 450 nm excitation, with the emission peak located at 550 nm. Beyond 2% doping, a decrease in intensity was observed due to concentration quenching. These results demonstrated that aerosol spray pyrolysis could effectively produce high-quality YAG:Ce phosphors with controllable morphology and excellent optical properties, rendering them suitable for advanced lighting technologies.

Novel ZnO‒YAG:Ce composite ceramic phosphors with excellent thermal performance and color quality for laser-driven lighting

Yi Xie,Huanyu Zhao,Wenlong Zhou,Mu Zhang,Zhaolin Na,Xudong Sun

The application of laser-driven lighting is constrained by the thermal quenching and poor color quality of phosphor converters. In this study, novel ZnO–YAG:Ce composite ceramics were successfully fabricated by vacuum hot-pressing. The addition of ZnO effectively enhanced the thermal conductivities of the composite ceramics. Moreover, ZnO exhibited good chemical compatibility with YAG and low densification temperatures, which led to excellent thermal and optical properties of the composite ceramics. The maximal luminescence saturation threshold of 10 W/mm 2 with a luminous flux of 1243 lm was achieved for ZnO–20 %YAG:Ce. Furthermore, ZnO–YAG:Ce composite ceramic phosphors showed higher color rendering index (CRI) than that of the YAG–YAG:Ce due to their additional green emission and broadened spectra under excitation of blue LDs, indicating excellent color quality of the ZnO–YAG:Ce composite ceramic phosphor for laser-driven lighting.

Novel high-thermal-conductivity composite ceramic phosphors for high-brightness laser-driven lighting

Huanyu Zhao,Huaqian Yu,Jian Xu,Mu Zhang,Xiaodong Li,Xudong Sun

The widespread application of laser diodes (LDs) in high-brightness lighting is limited by the insufficient heat dissipation of colour converters due to high-power laser irradiation. In this study, a novel MgO–YAG:Ce composite ceramic with excellent optical and thermal properties was fabricated by hot pressing. The thermal conductivity of the MgO–YAG:Ce composite ceramic is 14–21% higher than that of the Al2O3–YAG:Ce composite ceramic in the temperature range of 25–200 °C. When pumped by blue LDs with 1 W mm−2, the MgO–40 vol% YAG:Ce composite ceramic produces white light with a luminous efficacy of 292 lm W−1. Moreover, it exhibits a luminous saturation threshold of as high as 32.2 W mm−2 and a maximal luminous flux of 3979 lm. These results indicate that MgO–YAG:Ce composite ceramic is a promising phosphor converter for high-power laser-driven lighting.

Laser-driven Al2O3-YAG:Ce composite ceramic phosphors-a trade-off between the low Etendue requirement and thermal management

Yujie Li,Jing Li,Jie Chen,Hui Lin,Yang Tang,Ruijin Hong,Zhaoxia Han,Dawei Zhang

Ceramic phosphors offer extremely high brightness and are well-suited for low-etendue optical systems. However, efficient heat dissipation under high-power-density excitation remains a key challenge. In this work, the influence of Al 2 O 3 addition on the densification, photoluminescence performance, and laser-induced damage behavior of YAG:Ce ceramic phosphors is systematically investigated. The main contribution of this study is to reveal the trade-off between low etendue and effective thermal management. The results show that a suitable amount of Al 2 O 3 addition can promote grain growth and reduce porosity. Under low power density, the emission intensity is maximized at moderate Al 2 O 3 content. As the power density increases, samples with higher Al 2 O 3 content exhibit more stable emission due to enhanced thermal conductivity and improved heat dissipation. The 20 wt% sample achieves balanced performance, exhibiting a relatively small emission spot that ensures low etendue while maintaining a comparably higher damage threshold, representing a key trade-off between low etendue and efficient thermal management.

Simultaneous enhancement of red emission and densification in spark-plasma-sintered YAG: Ce transparent ceramics via Si3N4 additive

Ziqiang Jiang,Laian Sheng,Jingtian Li,Guodong Sun,Weihua Luo,Peng Zhao

In present work, Ce 3 + -doped Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (YAG: Ce) transparent ceramics were fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) using Si 3 N 4 as a multifunctional sintering additive. The effects of Si 3 N 4 on the microstructure, densification behavior, and luminescent properties were systematically investigated. It is demonstrated that Si 3 N 4 could be effectively incorporated into the YAG lattice through a charge-balanced substitution mechanism in which Si 4+ -N 3- pairs replace Al 3+ -O 2- , resulting in a significant redshift of the Ce 3+ emission from 545 nm to 582 nm due to enhanced crystal field splitting and nephelauxetic effects. Furthermore, the substitution process also yields in-situ formation of SiO 2 , which promotes densification via liquid-phase sintering, achieves a relative density exceeding 99.5 %, and partially mitigates carbon contamination. When applied in phosphor-converted white LEDs, the Si 3 N 4 -doped YAG: Ce ceramics enabled a substantial reduction in correlated color temperature (CCT) from 4903 K to 3196 K, demonstrating their potential as efficient warm-white light converters without requiring additional red phosphors.

Impact of Ce3+ concentration and thickness on luminance and chromaticity uniformity of YAG:Ce ceramic color converters for laser lighting

Bingguo Liu,Jiafu Zhang,Xinrong Chen,Heyu Wang,Feng Wang,Yangzi Li,Dan Zhao,Zhe Guan,Jian Xu,Baoli Du,Dennis Dan Corell,Carsten Dam-Hansen,Ole Bjarlin Jensen

Free from the “curse” of efficiency droop in high-power LEDs, laser-driven phosphor-converted laser diodes (pc-LDs) light sources demonstrate significantly greater potential in achieving ultra-high brightness white light. To mitigate the luminance saturation, rigorous re-optimization of luminescent ion concentration and heat dissipation geometry is essential. Beyond the photometric and colorimetric properties, the low spatial uniformity of pc-LDs poses a critical but often overlooked challenge. Here, we present a systematic investigation of the effect of Ce 3+ concentration and thickness on the luminance and uniformity of YAG:Ce ceramic color converters. To quantitatively assess luminescence uniformity, high dynamic range color images were captured to statistically evaluate spatial chromaticity variations across the luminescent spot. The results firmly demonstrated that the Ce 3+ concentration and thickness are two interdependent parameters closely related to uniform chromaticity and luminance, which should be optimized simultaneously. This study provides critical optimization guidelines for laser lighting development.

The YAG:Ce Phosphor Glass Prepared by a Low-Temperature Stirring Technique for WLED: Achieving High Luminous Efficiency of the Phosphor

Tiejun Zhang,Yayuan Liu,Xuanhang Wang,Xin Qiao,Juan Zhang,Jing Wang,Bo Liu,Jiangyan Wang,Bo Li,Zhongzhi Wang,Pengcheng Hao

Fluorescent glass (PiG) has emerged as an important candidate material in the field of white light-emitting diode (WLED) illumination. However, its conventional preparation processes are often complex and time-consuming, resulting in a significant performance degradation during fabrication. In this study, we carefully designed a SiO2–P2O5–Al2O3–Na2O–K2O–BaO glass composition, which was combined with Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ (YAG:Ce) phosphor via a low-temperature stirring process at 750 °C. This approach aims to minimize the thermal and structural damage to the YAG:Ce phosphor, yielding high-quality fluorescent glass (PiG). For comparison, a control sample (S-PiG) was fabricated using the traditional sintering process, in which glass powder and the same amount of YAG:Ce phosphor were sintered in a muffle furnace. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analyses revealed that the mild synthesis method produced fluorescent glass with a uniform microstructure and an ideal crystalline phase, both contributing to the enhanced luminescent efficiency and optical performance. Subsequently, both PiG and S-PiG were coupled to blue LED chips to fabricate WLED devices, and their photoluminescent properties were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that the newly developed PiG exhibits an excellent luminescent performance under blue-light excitation, achieving an internal quantum efficiency as high as 88.03%. Its emission spectrum covers the ideal white-light region, with a luminous efficacy (LE) of 157.43 lm/W, a correlated color temperature of 6097 K, and CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.3340, 0.3524). These findings indicate that the low-temperature stirring process effectively preserves the luminescent properties of YAG:Ce phosphors within PiG. This not only highlights the importance of this technique in enhancing the performance of YAG:Ce-based fluorescent glass but also provides a novel and practical approach for future WLED lighting applications.

Reflective laser drive converter with Al2O3 particles based on high thermal conductivity AlN substrate: achieving high power density light illumination

Gaohong Wu,Xiangjia Sun,Yanrong Liang,Jiaying Zheng,Yulan Xie,Zhaoping Chen,Jian Xu,Weidong Xiang,Xiaojuan Liang

To address the thermal management challenge in phosphor-in-glass (PiG) materials for laser lighting due to low glass matrix thermal conductivity, this study developed YAG:Ce 3+ -Al 2 O 3 PiG composites reinforced with Al 2 O 3 particles, achieving a thermal conductivity of 78.6 W/(m·K). A TiO 2 reflective layer optimized for reflection and light conversion was introduced between the AlN substrate and PiG layer. Systematic optimization of Al 2 O 3 content and preparation conditions yielded YAG:Ce 3+ -Al 2 O 3 PiG composites with exceptional performance: maximum luminous flux (LF) of 2515 lm under blue laser excitation, saturation threshold (ST) of 27.57 W/mm 2 , and luminous efficiency (LE) of 174.7 lm/W. LF and ST increased by 184.5 % and 167.4 %, respectively, compared to non-Al 2 O 3 counterparts. The surface temperature of 9 wt% Al 2 O 3 PiG reached 363.85 K, 34.4 % lower than the working temperature of the sample without Al 2 O 3 addition. Stable light emission and high photothermal stability confirm its potential as a high-brightness laser lighting material.

Facile fabrication of monolithic integrated YAG:Ce/Al2O3 ceramic modules with improved thermal management and optical performance for phosphor-converted laser lighting

Chao Li,Yu Yao,Jiafu Zhang,Jian Xu,Xinrong Chen,Bingguo Liu,Baoli Du,Le Zhang,Jian Kang,Carsten Dam-Hansen,Ole Bjarlin Jensen

To resolve the long-standing issues of thermal management, interfacial delamination, and efficiency loss in reflection-mode laser converters (such as phosphor-in-glass films and phosphor ceramic-substrate architectures), we developed a novel monolithic integrated ceramic (MIC) based on YAG:Ce, which eliminates the need for adhesives as well as the bonding interfaces formed by them and produces an inherently robust interfacial bonding with low thermal resistance and high delamination resistance. These modules were fabricated via a facile single-step solid-state reaction from bi-layered green pellets, consisting of an upper YAG:Ce phosphor layer and a lower alumina substrate layer. The integrated alumina substrate simultaneously performs three essential functions: robust mechanical support, efficient thermal management, and improved light reflection for the phosphor layer. This innovative design overcomes the interfacial bonding issue while optimizing both thermal and optical performance in a single cohesive structure. The saturation threshold, energy efficiency, and luminous exitance (spot confinement ability) of the as-prepared MIC modules were investigated using two testing modes, namely large-spot-mode (high laser power) and small-spot-mode (high laser power density). We validated and explained the critical role of phosphor layer thickness in light emission characteristics by evaluating its dependence on optoelectronic performance. These results conclusively demonstrate the MIC's exceptional capability for achieving ultra-high brightness and its potential for laser lighting applications.

Transparent Ceramic-Quantum Dots Glass Film Composites with High-Efficiency Thermal Management for Laser-Driven Projection Display

Sifan Zhuo,Shisheng Lin,Tao Pang,Lingwei Zeng,Zikang Yu,Yang Peng,Ran An,Zhehong Zhou,Guoyu Xi,Shaojun Wang,An Xie,Daqin Chen

Although blue laser-excited phosphor-in-glass films (PiGFs) have been extensively investigated for laser-driven display applications, their performance is still constrained due to a broad red emitting spectrum and thermal management challenges, etc. To overcome these limitations, this study develops a novel composite architecture – YAG: Ce transparent ceramic-CsPbBr 1.5 I 1.5 quantum dots (CPBI QDs) in glass film enhanced with h-BN (YAG: Ce TC-QiGF BN). YAG: Ce TC acts as a high thermal conductivity substrate and yellow light component, while QiGF enables to produce narrowband red emission. The h-BN particles are dispersed within QiGF, where a significant portion of them accumulate around the CPBI QDs powders. The inclusion of h-BN significantly improves both light extraction efficiency and thermal conductivity, leading to an increase of blue-light absorption efficiency from 57.74% to 69.26% and mitigation of heat accumulation induced by high-power laser irradiation. Among the three designed prototype projection display systems (YAG: Ce TC, YAG: Ce TC- CASN: Eu PiGF, and YAG: Ce TC-QiGF BN), the YAG: Ce TC-QiGF BN-based configuration demonstrates the most effective red-light enhancement and superior color rendering performance, particularly exhibiting the purest red color due to its narrowband emission feature. This innovative material holds considerable potential for the next-generation laser-driven displays.

Unique architecture of PiGF@microchannel converter enabling high luminescence saturation for high-brightness laser lighting

Jian Xu,Xin Liu,Zikang Yu,Hongjin Zhang,Zixiang Zhang,Yun Mou,Mingxiang Chen,Yang Peng,Qing Wang

Laser-driven white lighting is believed to be a future-oriented high-brightness solid-state light (SSL) source, which is confronted with a severe challenge in developing a laser-driven color converter with efficient thermal management. Herein, a unique architecture of phosphor-in-glass film bonded with a microchannel cooling (PiGF-MC) converter was proposed to enable high luminescence saturation for high-brightness laser-driven white lighting. The PiGF consisted of yellow-emitting Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ (YAG) was sintered on an alumina substrate and then soldered on a liquid-cooled microchannel radiator, which realizes outstanding heat dissipation performance of laser-driven PiGF. The PiGF-MC converter possesses luminance saturation threshold under a high laser power density of 21 W mm −2 , 2.3 times that of the traditional PiGF-alumina converter (∼9 W mm −2 ). High-brightness laser-driven white light is achieved by the PiGF-MC with a high luminous flux of 2953 lm@21 W mm −2 , and long-term stable optical performance is simultaneously realized. The working temperatures of laser-driven PiGF-MC are all lower than 200 °C under various laser powers. This finding demonstrates the broad prospect of the proposed PiGF-MC converter architecture for next-generation high-brightness laser-driven white lighting.
