The artificial-photosynthetic semiconductor composites have attracted tremendous attention with respect to their enhanced photocatalytic properties. Herein, we reported the facile synthesis of Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/WO 3 ·H 2 O S-scheme photocatalyst via one-pot in situ hydrothermal strategy. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation was employed to reveal the S-scheme photogenerated electron transfer mechanism, and the subsequent experimental characterization further illustrated the path for electron-hole transfer and separation under the effect of S-scheme heterojunction. The mass of WO 3 ·H 2 O accounted for Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/WO 3 ·H 2 O 48 wt% (ZCSW48) was the best high-efficiency S-scheme photocatalyst displayed significant photocatalytic properties on pollution degradation, in detail, with the Cr (VI) photoreduction rate of 2.27 μmol·s −1 ·g −1 cat. and the Rhodamine B (RhB) photooxidation rate of 0.38 μmol·min −1 ·g −1 cat. , respectively. The designed Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/WO 3 ·H 2 O photocatalysts have integrated with the three aspects of photocatalytic efficiencies including the visible light response, prolonged photogenerated carrier lifetime and the sufficient surface active sites due to amount of surface defects , therefore, this work provides more insights into the utilization of green energy for environmental treatment by artificial structured semiconductors.

Graphical The schottky heterojunction is constructed based on the Fermi energy level difference between the metal phase 1T-WS 2 and Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S. Under visible light irradiation, the tight interfacial contact leads to strong electronic interactions and facilitates the transfer of photogenerated carriers from Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S to 1T-WS 2 , further enhancing photocatalytic hydrogen production. Due to inefficient charge separation and low surface catalytic conversion efficiencies, cocatalysts are required for achieving photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Being a noble-metal-free cocatalyst, metallic 1T-WS 2 with excellent conductivity can function for this reaction. Herein, 1T-WS 2 /Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S is constructed via a simple and feasible grinding approach. The composite containing 7.5 % 1T-WS 2 in 1T-WS 2 /Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S achieves a hydrogen evolution rate of 61.65 mmol g −1 h −1 and an external quantum efficiency of 8.04 % at 420 nm, which is 37 times that of bare Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (1.67 mmol g −1 h −1 ). The electrical conductivity of metallic 1T-WS 2 reduces the transfer impedance at the interface and thus accelerates the non-radiative energy transfer and electron transport rate. The different Fermi levels of 1T-WS 2 and Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S form a Schottky junction, which promotes the transfer of photogenerated electrons from Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S to 1T-WS 2 . More importantly, the close interface contact between 1T-WS 2 and Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S results in strong electron interactions, which is conducive to the spatial separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. This work will further expand the application of 1T-WS 2 in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution process.

The effect of sacrificial reagents (SRs) on photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate over different photocatalysts was systematically studied. Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), and TiO 2 were chosen as typical photocatalysts, while alcohols, amines, carboxylic acids, and inorganic Na 2 S/Na 2 SO 3 were chosen as SRs. The results indicate that Na 2 S/Na 2 SO 3 , methanol, and triethanolamine are the most suitable SRs for Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S, TiO 2 , and g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. It was found that in selecting organic SRs, both the permittivity and oxidation potential have profound effects on the H 2 production efficiency, which will provide basis for choosing appropriate SRs for different photocatalysts.

The photocatalytic hydrogen production performance of semiconductor materials can be improved by co-catalyst modification. In most of the studies, the size of the co-catalyst is relatively small compared to the primary catalyst. However, in this study, we employed a novel strategy by synthesizing a relatively large-sized Cu 2 MoS 4 as the co-catalyst and in situ loading smaller-sized Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S onto Cu 2 MoS 4 , verifying that Cu 2 MoS 4 enhances the photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency of Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S. It can be observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that the lateral size of 2D Cu 2 MoS 4 is at least 50 times larger than the Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S nanoparticle particle size. In addition, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations have demonstrated that the active site for hydrogen production in the composite is located in Cu 2 MoS 4 . The large-sized of Cu 2 MoS 4 not only provides more active sites but also broadens the electron transport channel, which is conducive to promoting the transfer of photogenerated electrons from Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S. This work enriches the study of large-sized materials as co-catalyst and provides a strategy for the construction of composite catalysts.

The advancement of photocatalysts for solar fuel production is fundamentally limited by inefficient charge separation and sluggish surface kinetics. Herein, we propose a defect-engineering paradigm to develop Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S photocatalysts with exceptional photocatalytic hydrogen activity. The alternating zinc-blende/wurtzite homojunction, induced by ordered stacking faults, is revealed to enable a periodic internal electric field that facilitates directional bulk charge transport and superior photogenerated carrier separation. This design is validated through the subsequent hydrothermal synthesis of twined Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S samples with the targeted homojunctions and significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance. Mechanistic investigations further demonstrate that a fine-tuned density of vacancies, serving as selective charge traps, is essential to maximize efficiency. Accordingly, a superior hydrogen evolution rate of 192.11 mmol/h/g, along with remarkable stability (>36 h), has been achieved in our synthesized samples, substantially surpassing previously reported ZnCdS-based photocatalysts. The work highlights the potential of tailoring homojunction and vacancy traps to boost the photocatalytic efficiency, and paves an alternative way to design high-performance photocatalysts for scalable hydrogen evolution from water.

Developing the full-spectrum driven photocatalysts is considered as a potential strategy to realize the high-efficient photocatalytic hydrogen. Herein, plasmonic Na x MoO 3 with oxygen vacancies was coupled with Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S to construct Z-scheme heterostructure . The Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S /Na x MoO 3 photocatalysts perform UV–vis-NIR-driven extraordinary photocatalytic hydrogen activity: the H 2 rates of Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/Na x MoO 3 -5 under the irradiation of full-spectrum, > 420 nm, > 520 nm and > 780 nm are 6033, 2846, 92, 54 μmolg -1 h −1 , respectively, showing an energy distribution that eligible the distribution of solar energy. Benefiting from the synergistic impact of the interfacial Z-type heterojunction and the tunable plasmonic resonance of Na x MoO 3 , the composites shows excellent full-spectrum absorption and the high charge separation efficiency. This work endows Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S the NIR-driven photocatalytic H 2 ability by utilizing the LSPR effect of Na x MoO 3 , which provides a new horizon to realize the high-efficient photocatalytic performance and the sufficient usage of solar light.

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water has emerged as a pivotal approach for the generation of sustainable energy. In this study, the Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/TiO 2 ( x ZCST, where x denotes the molar ratio of ZCS to TiO 2 ) nanofibers S-scheme heterojunction is successfully synthesized via the hydrothermal deposition of Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (ZCS) nanoparticles onto the surface of TiO 2 nanofibers. In comparison to pure TiO 2 and ZCS, the as-prepared x ZCST photocatalyst exhibits a significantly enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, a maximum hydrogen evolution rate of 16.68 mmol g −1 h −1 is achieved in the 3ZCST sample, which corresponds to 1.78 times that of ZCS and 57.52 times that of TiO 2 , respectively. Further investigations have substantiated the formation of the internal electric field and charge transfer process within the S-scheme heterojunction, demonstrating the difference between the Fermi levels of TiO 2 and ZCS, as well as the migration of electrons from TiO 2 to ZCS under illumination. Such an S-scheme heterojunction is also found to effectively facilitate the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and preserve strong redox capabilities, significantly enhancing photocatalytic hydrogen production. These findings offer valuable insights and guidance for designing high-performance S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts.

In our work, Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/WO 3 (ZCSW) S-scheme heterostructure composites were prepared by an innovation synthesis called electrostatic adsorption method, which supported to form high-quality hetero-interface connection to efficiently improve the photocatalytic activity . Specially, 1D Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (ZCS) nanorods and 2D WO 3 nanosheets were used to construct the S-scheme photocatalysts that have fully reflected both two components’ structural and morphological features. By DFT calculation, this S-scheme photogenerated electron transfer channel could be predicted by the work function between Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (4.132 eV relative to vacuum level) and WO 3 (5.175 eV), thus the practical effect of the S-scheme heterojunction could support the electron flow from the valence band of Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S to the conduction band of WO 3 under the built-in electric field in the space charge region. Meanwhile, PL spectra and electrochemical measurement together reveal the photogenerated electron separation enhancement of ZCSW composites. For photocatalysis , ZCSW40 (40 stands for the weight ratio of WO 3 versus Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S) was the best catalyst among the as-prepared samples with the Cr (VI) degradation rate of 20.4 μmol min −1 ·g −1 cat. , which was nearly 3 times and 2 times higher than those of bare ZCS and the rest of ZCSW photocatalysts under the simulated solar-driven irradiation. Furthermore, ZCSW40 possessed excellent cycling stability in photocatalytic reaction, as well as the highest reaction dynamic constant of 0.92103.

Photocatalytic extraction hydrogen from water has been identified as a promising strategy for clean energy production. Constructing heterostructured photocatalysts is a prospective strategy to address the inherent problems of single semiconductor, including sluggish photogenerated charge/electron separation/transfer, fast recombination and interferior light adsorption, thereby contributing to enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting. Herein, NH 2 -UiO-66/Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (NU/ZCS) heterostructured photocatalysts were prepared by growing NH 2 -UiO-66 (NU) on Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (ZCS) for effective photocatalytic hydrogen generation. The optimized 20-NU/ZCS displays a distinguished photocatalytic hydrogen generation rate of up to 27.17 mmol g −1 h −1 , representing 1.71 times that of pure ZCS and exceeding most ZCS-based photocatalysts. The boosted photocatalytic activity can be stemmed from the intimate contact and the synergistic effect of NU and ZCS, which accelerate the separation/delivery and suppress the recombination of photogenerated electron/proton, and reinforce the light absorption. This study puts forward a promising method for fabricating ZCS-based heterostructured photocatalysts for efficient hydrogen generation.

CuNiCoAlLa-HEO@Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S Schottky heterojunction photocatalysts for H 2 evolution. • Optimal CH-10 yields 9.73-fold higher H 2 than Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S with stable cycling. • Dispersed multi-metals broaden absorption, lower resistance and inhibit photocorrosion. • Spontaneous electron transfer from Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S to HEO creates built-in field. • Interfacial Schottky barrier and multi-metal synergy promote surface HER kinetics. Hydrogen production through photocatalytic water splitting serves as a critical means of harnessing solar energy and producing clean fuels. Nevertheless, traditional photocatalysts are greatly hampered by the rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, sluggish interfacial charge transfer, and insufficient long-term stability. In this study, a quinary high-entropy oxide CuNiCoAlLaO X was successfully synthesized via a coprecipitation method, and thereafter incorporated with Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S by employing a mechanical mixing followed by solvent evaporation, thereby constructing a CuNiCoAlLaO X /Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S Ohmic junction photocatalytic system. The composition of the high-entropy oxide and its interfacial interaction with Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S were systematically investigated, with a focus on photocatalytic hydrogen production performance and stability. In a lactic acid sacrificial system, the optimized high-entropy composite catalyst exhibited outstanding capability of generating hydrogen, achieving a cumulative hydrogen production of 261.59 μmol over 5 h, with a hydrogen production rate approximately 9.73 times higher than that of pristine Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S. Comprehensive characterizations including XRD, SEM, and TEM confirmed that the composite possesses well-defined phase structures and uniformly dispersed metal elements, demonstrating the reliability and reproducibility of the preparation process. Furthermore, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical measurements validated the broad-spectrum light absorption and efficient charge carrier separation as key advantages of the composite. This work highlights the promising potential of high-entropy oxide-based composite catalysts and provides important experimental evidence and a viable technological pathway for the development of low-cost, highly stable photocatalytic materials for hydrogen production.

Loading co-catalyst is one of the essential ways to strengthen the performance of photocatalyst . Here, a novel non-precious metal co-catalyst Ti 2 C/TiO 2 was successfully synthesized and Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S nanoparticle grown on the surface of Ti 2 C/TiO 2 equably. In our work, 0.01 g photocatalysts were used in photocatalytic activity measurement. Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/Ti 2 C/TiO 2 composite (2 wt% Ti 2 C/TiO 2 ) exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity and the H 2 yield is 32.57 mmol/g −1 /h −1 under visible light irradiation. The photoelectrochemical results reveal that Ti 2 C/TiO 2 could improve the separation of the photo-induced carriers in Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/Ti 2 C/TiO 2 heterojunction . And DFT calculations demonstrate that the Gibbs free energy of oxygen-terminated Ti 2 C and TiO 2 are much lower than that of Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S. Therefore, the Ti 2 C/TiO 2 has an active impact on improving the H 2 production of Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S. This study provides a new way to explore the application of inexpensive co-catalysts on a large scale.

Exploration visible-light-driven photocatalyst is imperative to resolve energy crisis. Hollow structure photocatalyst has attracted increasing attention due to its large surface area can greatly facilitate light harvesting and enrich the reaction sites. Based on this, a hollow core-shelled composite photocatalyst of Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S and copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) was synthesized by facile solution method. Under visible-light irradiation (λ > 400 nm), the as-prepared CuPc/Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S photocatalyst exhibits eminent hydrogen evolution up to 29.16 mmol/g·h without noble metal co-catalyst modification, which was 3.5 times higher than pristine hollow Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S nanoflower (8.42 mmol/g·h). Meanwhile, the lifetime of photo-carriers prolongs from 0.765 s (Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S) to 1.05 s (CuPc/Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S-4%) based on open-circuit potential calculation, and the apparent quantum yield reaches 6.95% at 400 nm wavelength. In addition, the photocorrosion of Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S phase dissolution is greatly restrained, ascribing to p-type CuPc with merits of fast holes transfer and high chemical stability. These results indicate that CuPc/Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S heterojunction possesses excellent visible-light absorption capacity and superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution property. This study presents new insights for designing core-shelled hollow photocatalyst based on organic-inorganic nanoarchitectonics, which displays countless potential for future green energy harvesting.
