Dynamics and morphology play a crucial role in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen production. Regulating the transfer of photogenerated charges is an effective way to improve the catalytic activity. In this paper, 1T-WS2 is introduced into a p–n heterostructure, ZnCdS/NiV-LDH, as a metalloid electron pump to transfer photogenerated electrons from semiconductors with larger work functions to metalloid materials with smaller work functions, effectively to attract photogenerated electrons, and promote charge rearrangement at the p–n heterostructure interface, so as to achieve the best utilization efficiency of photogenerated charges. Second, adjusting the morphology to increase the light absorption area of the catalyst is also a way to improve the photocatalytic activity. Two different nanosheet structures dispersed heavily stacked ZnCdS, increasing the light absorption area of the system. The optimal catalyst ratio achieves a hydrogen evolution rate of 22.37 mmol g−1 h−1, achieving 7.98% AQE and 2.12% STH conversion efficiency at 450 nm. The potential mechanism was demonstrated through in situ XPS. This study provides new insights into adding “electron pumps” to heterostructures to enhance photocatalytic activity.

In this work, the fluorescent sensors based ternary ZnCdS quantum dots (QDs) were constructed for nitrite (NO 2 − ) detection, and ternary ZnCdS QDs were synthesized by a rather facile, low-cost and effective aqueous synthesis method using air-stable compounds. Experimental results indicated that the ZnCdS QDs fluorescence (PL) emission intensity was decreased gradually with the introduction of NO 2 − . Importantly, the F/F 0 (F and F 0 were the PL intensity in the presence and absence of NO 2 − at 505 nm, respectively) was linearly proportional to the NO 2 − to 700 μM, the equation of linear regression was y = −0.123x+1.1525, which showed a better performance to the detection of NO 2 − . Moreover, there was no interference to other interfering substances including metal ions and anion ions. Thus, we applied the ZnCdS QDs fluorescence sensors to detect the contents of NO 2 − in ham sausage and the results showed that the contents of NO 2 − in ham sausage was 18.45 mg/kg. Therefore, this test method had the advantages of simplicity, rapidity and high sensitivity.

Zn 1− x Cd x S ( x =0–1.0) powders were synthesized by a simple combustion method using cadmium nitrate, zinc nitrate and thiourea as raw materials. The structures, morphologies, absorbance, luminescence and photocatalytic properties of the samples were studied by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy , ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry and photoluminescence . The results show that all Zn 1− x Cd x S samples exhibit hexagonal structure and no metastable cubic phase is obtained. With increasing content of Cd, red-shifts are observed in both the absorption edges of UV–vis absorption spectra and emission bands of photoluminescence spectra. Among all Zn 1− x Cd x S samples, CdS shows the best visible-light photocatalytic performance due to its narrow bandgap.

Studies on highly efficient heterojunction photocatalysts are regarded as an important task for H 2 production by water splitting. In this work, a novel ternary Fe 3 S 4 /ZnCdS/ZnS (FS/ZCS/ZnS) heterostructures were successfully prepared by a simple grinding method. With ZCS/ZnS nanoclusters loading on the surface of Fe 3 S 4 microflowers, photocatalytic H 2 production of ZCS/ZnS was largely improved in lactic acid (LA) solution. The H 2 evolution rate of FS/ZCS/ZnS is high up to 4.36 mmol g −1 h −1 under visible light irradiation and 8.13 mmol g −1 h −1 under full spectrum irradiation. Prolonged experiments and cycle tests showed that FS/ZCS/ZnS is stable and reusable. The formation of ternary heterostructures facilitates the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers (PCCs, including photogenerated electrons and holes), leading to the activity enhancement of photocatalytic H 2 production. The strategy for the heterojunction construction can provide more perspective for the design of high-efficiency and recyclable photocatalysts for H 2 evolution.

A photothermal-regulated photosensitization strategy is developed for hydrogen evolution. • Hollow ZnCdS architecture enables photon trapping and localized photothermal conversion. • Fluorescein sensitization provides additional electron-transfer pathways under solar irradiation. • NiS promotes interfacial electron extraction and efficient hydrogen evolution kinetics. • Local thermal fields regulate photosensitized charge transfer for enhanced photocatalysis. The efficient utilization of photogenerated carriers remains a critical challenge for improving hydrogen evolution performance in metal sulfide-based photocatalysts. Herein, we develop a photothermal-photosensitization synergistic strategy by constructing a FL-NiS-ZDS composite photocatalyst through a hard-template approach combined with electrostatic self-assembly. The hollow ZDS architecture enables enhanced photon management through multiple scattering and reflection within the cavity, generating a localized photothermal field with a temperature increase to 41.2 °C under irradiation. This thermal effect accelerates interfacial charge migration and surface reaction kinetics, as evidenced by the reduced apparent activation energy. Meanwhile, fluorescein (FL) acts as a photosensitizer to broaden solar-light utilization up to 600 nm and provides an additional electron-transfer pathway through excited-state electron injection from FL into ZDS. The intimate interfacial coupling among FL, ZDS, and NiS enables efficient charge generation, migration, and utilization, where NiS further promotes hydrogen evolution by facilitating electron extraction and proton reduction. Consequently, the FL-NiS-ZDS photocatalyst achieves a high hydrogen evolution rate of 1807.1 μmol·h −1 under full-spectrum irradiation, together with high apparent quantum yields in the 400–500 nm region and good stability over a 24 h cycling test. This work provides a strategy for integrating localized photothermal regulation with photosensitized charge transfer and offers mechanistic insights into the rational design of efficient solar-driven hydrogen evolution photocatalysts. Efficient photocatalytic CO 2 reduction is limited by rapid carrier recombination and sluggish interfacial kinetics. Here, NiFe-LDH/ZnCdS (ZCS) heterostructures were fabricated by hydrothermal synthesis followed by electrostatic self-assembly. Mott–Schottky analysis, XPS, photoelectrochemical measurements, and density functional theory calculations collectively reveal staggered band alignment and interfacial charge redistribution, supporting a type-II charge-transfer pathway with improved carrier separation. The optimized 15NiFe-LDH/ZCS produced CO, CH 4 , C 2 H 4 , and C 2 H 6 at 16.54, 8.30, 1.22, and 4.70 μmol g −1 h −1 , respectively, while maintaining stable activity over 16 h. The enhancement originates from intimate interfacial contact, stronger visible-light harvesting, faster charge transport, and increased accessible active sites. These results establish a practical heterostructure-design strategy for multi-electron photocatalytic CO 2 conversion.

Driven by renewable solar energy, biomass reforming under mild conditions for synergistic hydrogen production has emerged as a rapidly developing and promising approach, enabling not only high-purity hydrogen generation but also offering new avenues for biomass reutilization. In this work, a spherical ZCS/SiO 2 composite catalyst was fabricated by anchoring ZnCdS (ZCS) nanoparticles onto SiO 2 nanospheres via a water bath technique coupled with in situ growth. The physicochemical properties of the resulting catalyst were systematically investigated through comprehensive characterization methods, and the behavior of photogenerated charges was analyzed using photoelectrochemical measurements. Among the prepared samples, the ZCS/SiO 2 -100% catalyst exhibited the highest hydrogen evolution activity, achieving a hydrogen evolution rate of 109.16 μmol g −1 h −1 when sodium lignosulfonate, derived from the bamboo pulping process, was used as the substrate. This enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance is primarily attributed to the introduction of SiO 2 , which increases the number of active sites and expands the contact area between the catalyst and reactants. Furthermore, a plausible photocatalytic reaction mechanism is proposed. It is anticipated that this study will provide a promising strategy for green hydrogen production, high-value conversion of organic waste, and the advancement of efficient photocatalytic materials.

Atomic-level control in crystal facet engineering offers a systematic approach to enhance catalytic performance by modulating microscopic properties such as electronic structure, surface energy, and coordination environment. Herein, we propose a phase-junction engineering strategy for ZnCdS (ZCS) solid solutions with atomic Ru loading to construct a high-performance catalyst (Ru/ZCS). The choice of sulfur source, thioacetamide (TA) versus thiourea (TR), plays a pivotal role in determining the crystal phase structure and photocatalytic performance. Microstructural characterizations reveal that ZCS-TA features intersecting (111) facets of ZnS and CdS, whereas ZCS-TR forms a homogeneous ZnCdS crystal phase. This structural distinction leads to the preferential anchoring of Ru single atoms at the phase junction of ZCS-TA, while Ru clusters form on ZCS-TR. Remarkably, Ru/ZCS-TA achieves an exceptional H 2 evolution rate of 30.3 mmol g −1 h −1 under visible light ( λ >420 nm), surpassing bare ZCS-TA by 12-fold and nearly doubling the performance of Ru/ZCS-TR. In-situ experiments and mechanistic studies attribute the superior performance of Ru/ZCS-TA to the optimized facet structure enabled by phase-junction engineering, which significantly enhances reaction kinetics. This work establishes phase-junction engineering as an innovative strategy for designing high-efficiency single-atom photocatalysts under mild conditions, providing promising potential for water splitting applications. The phase-junction engineering of ZnCdS (ZCS) crystal facets for atomic Ru dispersion enhances both activity and stability of photocatalytic H 2 evolution (PHE) via accelerating surface reaction kinetics and optimizing the reaction barrier. Photocatalytic H 2 production using solar energy has received great attention, but suffers from low photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, Zn (1−x) Cd x S solid solution with different Zn/Cd molar ratio was synthesized by a solvothermal method, and tested for photocatalytic H 2 production from water. The bandgap, charge carrier separation efficiency and surface defect states of the Zn (1−x) Cd x S can be adjusted by altering the Zn/Cd molar ratio. The separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes was greatly enhanced with the Zn/Cd molar ratio of 0.8:0.2. Moreover, the Zn 0.8 Cd 0.2 S exposed most surface defect states compared to those of other Zn (1−x) Cd x S, which can be act as electron pools and active sites for improving photocatalytic H 2 production. Therefore, when the molar ratio of Zn/Cd is 0.8:0.2, the Zn 0.8 Cd 0.2 S exhibited the best performance for photocatalytic H 2 production with the H 2 production rate of 7.71 mmol·g -1 ·h -1 , which is much higher than that of ZnS (17 μmol·g -1 ·h -1 ) and CdS (5.37 μmol·g -1 ·h -1 ). This work provides an in-depth understanding of the surface defect states for enhancing the photocatalytic H 2 production.

Solid-solution Zn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S QDs balance redox ability, band alignment, and stability. • The QDs affords 95.4% HMF conversion and 70.1% DFF yield under visible light. • Synergisticeffects of h + , •O 2 − , and 1 O 2 drive highly selective HMF oxidation to DFF. The selective photocatalytic oxidation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into high-value platform chemicals represents a promising pathway toward achieving carbon neutrality and sustainable development. To overcome the limited visible-light response and severe photocorrosion of monometallic sulfide quantum dots (QDs), solid-solution ZnCdS QDs were fabricated, enabling efficient photocatalytic oxidation of HMF to high-value 2,5-Diformylfuran (DFF). Systematic characterizations reveal that the ternary ZnCdS QDs achieve an ideal balance between robust redox capability and favorable band alignment, alongside remarkable structural stability and sustainable recyclability. Under optimal conditions, the Zn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S QDs achieved 95.4 ± 0.3% HMF conversion and 70.1 ± 0.9% DFF yield. The reaction mechanism was elucidated via radical trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, demonstrating that reactive species, including h + , •O 2 − , and 1 O 2 synergistically promoted the high-value conversion of HMF to DFF. The availability of low-cost precious metal-free photocatalysts is critical for sustainable and large-scale hydrogen production. Constructing heterojunctions is considered as an effective strategy to enhance the transfer/separation of photo-induced charges. Nanoflower structures of ZnCdS can significantly enhance light absorption and increase the specific surface area available for reactions involving photo-generated carriers. Herein, MoS 2 are attached to ZnCdS nanoflowers through electrostatic adsorption, forming a ZnCdS-MoS 2 composite photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Under visible light irradiation, the ZCS-MoS 2 -8 % photocatalyst demonstrates an impressive photocatalytic HER rate of 42.07 mmol·h −1 ·g −1 , which is 5.8 times higher than that of the pure ZnCdS photocatalyst (outperforming many reported results). The MoS 2 nanocrystals greatly benefit the transfer of photoinduced electrons to ZnCdS for proton reduction and facilitate the transfer of holes for water oxidation. The constructed ZnCdS-MoS 2 photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution shows promising chemical and economic value.
