Porous MOF derived TiO2/ZnO/C@CNTs composites for enhancing lithium storage performance

Hui Cheng,Guiying Xu,Chengyao Zhu,Zahrah Alhalili,Xuan Du,Guo Gao

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials and their derivatives have been widely used in the area of clean energy. When appropriate MOFs are selected for pyrolysis under suitable conditions, MO/C composites containing metal oxides (MO) and carbon layer can be obtained, and the skeletal structure of MOFs can also be maintained. In this contribution, porous double MOFs composites wrapped by carbon nanotubes (MIL-125/ZIF-8@CNTs) has been synthesized. After pyrolysis, the MIL-125 is transformed into TiO 2 /C, the ZIF-8 is converted into ZnO/C, multi-walled carbon nanotubes were wrapping on the surface of TiO 2 /ZnO/C, and finally formation of porous TiO 2 /ZnO/C@CNTs composites. Multi-walls CNTs could improve the electrical conductivity of the composites and increase the structural stability of the architectures, alleviating the volume expansion of materials during the charging/discharging process. The synthesized porous TiO 2 /ZnO/C@CNTs exhibits high specific capacity (the capacity is 816.8 mAhg −1 at the current density of 100 mAg −1 after 100 cycles) and excellent rate performance. Even at the high current density of 2 A g −1 after 300 cycles, the capacity still could reach up to 800 mA h g −1 .

MOF-Derived Yolk–Shell NiCo/ZnO/C Composites with Efficient Microwave Absorption Properties

Wang Xiaodan,Xiao Xue,Zhang Fengfa,Li Zhaoqing,Sun Baihe,Dong Yuanyuan,Wang Huiwen,Liu Chao,Wang Wei,Bateer Buhe

Well-organized metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon-based materials exhibit ideal electromagnetic (EM) absorption performance. Nevertheless, it is still a challenge to reduce the complex permittivity and obtain high electromagnetism compatibility. Herein, magnetic rod-like carbon composite NiCo/ZnO/C with a metal–semiconductor interface structure was successfully fabricated through the pyrolysis of Ni/Co/ZiF8 MOF precursors. By comparing the EM wave properties of three materials, NiCo/ZnO/C displayed the optimal performance by virtue of the cooperation of complex permittivity dielectric loss and the magnetic loss of the composite. ZnO optimized the EM performance of NiCo/ZnO/C with a minimum reflection loss ( RL ) value (−50.7 dB) at 9.1 GHz and thickness of 2 mm. It is demonstrated that ZnO particles dispersed uniformly in the outer layer, which became a “green channel” to enhance the maximum intake of electron transport. Furthermore, the synergy between ZnO and NiCo generated an effective impedance match, enabling EM waves to easily enter the interior of the composite. The aim of this paper is to design and construct a platform containing dual-metals and oxide carbon-based composites for an efficient EM wave absorber. It has been proved that coating oxide on metallic carbon-based materials is an effective way to synthesize microwave absorbers with enormous potential. Graphical Abstract

NiO/ZnO-Coated Carbon Microspheres for Dispersive Solid-Phase Extraction (DSPE) of Malachite Green and Crystal Violet in Aquatic Food Products with Determination by Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC)

Zheqi Fei,Baisen Chen,Xuemei Wei,Lili Lian,Xiyue Wang,Dawei Lou

Developing highly efficient adsorbents toward trace pollutant analysis in complex biological samples is a challenge in analytical chemistry. Herein, NiO/ZnO-coated carbon microspheres (denoted by NiO/ZnO@C) with a well-defined core–shell structure were prepared through hydrothermal treatment and subsequent pyrolysis in air to enrich malachite green (MG) and crystal violet (CV). Hydrophilic carbon microspheres played an important role in the formation of core–shell NiO/ZnO@C, which may lead to the deposition of Ni2+/Zn2+ upon the surface via acidic chelating ligands. Based on the Langmuir model, NiO/ZnO@C demonstrated high adsorption capacities of 333.3 and 192.3 mg/g for MG and CV, respectively. Moreover, the NiO/ZnO@C composite served as a dispersive solid-phase extraction adsorbent to determine MG and CV in aquatic products combined with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography. High linearity was obtained for analyte concentrations from 5 to 500 μg/L with correlation coefficients (r) exceeding 0.9991. The limits of detection of the method were 0.50 μg/L (MG) and 0.35 μg/L (CV) with relative standard deviations less than 7.47%. Furthermore, the developed method was employed to determine MG and CV in aquatic products.

Caterpillar-like Ag–ZnO–C hollow nanocomposites for efficient solar photocatalytic degradation and disinfection

Ying Liu,Yucai Wan,Chuncai Kong,Pan Cheng,Qin Cheng,Qiongzhen Liu,Ke Liu,Ming Xia,Qihao Guo,Dong Wang

Engineering a highly accessible semiconductor with optimized physicochemical structure for efficient photocatalysis under visible light is never-ending. Herein, a facile route was developed to fabricate a caterpillar-like ZnO–C (ZC) hollow nanocomposite by directly pyrolyzing Zn-BTC MOF microrods and nanorods, which have been previously synthesized via a rapid supersonic-assisted aqueous reaction at room temperature. It is demonstrated that the ZC nanorods radically grow on the surface of the hollow nanocomposite directly converted from MOF-microrods at 550 °C and form a caterpillar-like catalyst based on an oriented attachment mechanism. After in situ photo-reduction of AgNO3, the Ag–ZnO–C (AZC550) nanocomposite catalyst possesses ultrahigh photodegradation turnover frequency (TOF) values towards methyl blue (3.00 × 10−3 mol mol−1 min−1), 4-nitrophenol (0.14 × 10−3 mol mol−1 min−1) and amoxicillin (3.43 × 10−3 mol mol−1 min−1), as well as a photo-inactivation activity of 6.25 × 105 cfu mg−1 min−1 towards E. coli, outperforming most state-of-the-art catalysts reported thus far. The ameliorated photocatalytic performance and recyclability can be assigned to the synergistic effects between the Zn–C hierarchical nanoarchitecture and Ag-NPs. This work provides a new approach for the design of efficient solar photocatalysts.

Heterogeneous Interface Engineering Enabled ZnO/C Hybrid Aerogels for High-Performance Radar-Infrared Compatible Stealth

Gu Weihua,Tan Xin,Liu Tao,Tao Zhe,Liu Juan,Du Wenbo,Xia Ailin

Pure carbon aerogels are constrained by insufficient electromagnetic loss mechanisms and poor compatibility between radar wave absorption and infrared stealth. Here, a heterogeneous interface engineering strategy is developed to construct ZnO/C hybrid aerogels derived from ZIF-8 and chitosan, featuring ZnO/C interfacial structures and hierarchical meso/macroporous structures. The hybrid aerogel sample, carbonized at 800 ° C (CA-Z-800), achieves optimal microwave absorption performance with a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of –35.74 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.55 GHz at a matching thickness of only 1.5 mm. Simultaneously, it maintains effective infrared stealth performance with a low thermal conductivity of 0.151 W/(m·K), a surface temperature rise of only ∼4 ° C, and infrared emissivity of 0.654 (3–5 μm) and 0.638 (8–14 μm). Notably, although increasing carbonization temperature to 900 ° C further reduces emissivity to 0.601 and 0.595, it severely degrades impedance matching, leading to a much weaker reflection loss (–13.53 dB) and a narrower effective bandwidth (2.85 GHz). This trade-off reveals that CA-Z-800 represents the optimal balance for radar-infrared compatible stealth. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidate charge redistribution and enhanced interfacial polarization at the ZnO/C interfacial structures, while computer simulation technology (CST) simulations confirm strong microwave attenuation. Systematic control of pyrolysis temperature and ZnO microstructure enables tuning of dielectric properties and thermal insulation. These findings demonstrate a correlation between radar absorption and infrared suppression, with CA-Z-800 achieving the optimal balance among the samples tested.

ZnO@C Coated Cellulose-Based Separators Control Lithium Deposition Direction to Stable Lithium Metal Batteries

Mei Chen,Yiqi Fan,Hongfang Zhou,Guoneng Li

Li metal anodes have attracted attention due to their high specific capacity and low electrochemical potential. Nevertheless, the uncontrolled growth of Li dendrites hinders the practical application of Li metal batteries. Although the various approaches have made performance improvements, safety hazards still exist since Li dendrites are still growing along the anode to the separator during the continuous plating/stripping process. Herein, a straightforward method is proposed to achieve stable Li metal batteries with directional growth control by using a functional ZnO@C/cellulose membrane as a separator. The abundant pore structure and functional groups of biomass cellulose enhance the Li-ion transport and interface compatibility. The ZnO transforms in situ to form a Li–Zn alloy layer which is uniformly coated to the separator to direct uniform ion concentration polarization and charge distribution polarization, control the growth direction of Li, significantly improve the cycling stability, and promote the reversibility of the Li plating/exfoliation process. As a result, the symmetric cell exhibits an extreme lifetime of more than 4500 h and low polarization at 3 mA cm −2 . The cycling performance of the Li||LiFePO 4 full cell reaches a capacity retention of 98% after 270 cycles at a mass loading of 10 mg cm −2 .

Yolk–shell ZnO/C@air@CoNi nanocages derived from bimetallic MOFs for boosted electromagnetic wave absorption

Yizhe Wang,Ye Yuan,Siyue Li,Peiyuan Zuo,Xiaoyun Liu,Qixin Zhuang

The dielectric–magnetic synergy and interfacial engineering is an important methodology to boost electromagnetic wave absorption performance. We herein propose a novel “coating-ion exchange etching-high temperature carbonization” process to synthesize yolk–shell zinc oxide/carbon@air@cobalt-nickel alloy (ZnO/C@air@CoNi) nanocages by taking advantages of dielectric–magnetic synergy and interfacial effect. The bimetallic core–shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67 precursor is employed as the structural template while Ni(NO₃)₂·6H₂O as an etchant to ensure controlled ion-exchange etching. The resulting dielectric zinc oxide/carbon (ZnO/C) core promotes interfacial polarization and dipole reorientation losses, while the CoNi shell enhances conductive loss and magnetic loss. Thanks to the dielectric–magnetic synergy and interfacial effect, the ZnO/C@air@CoNi nanocomposite exhibits outstanding electromagnetic wave absorption performance, achieving a maximum reflection loss of −72.28 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 5.28 GHz (12.40 −17.68 GHz) at a low filler loading of 20 wt%. This work provides new ideas to design absorbers by leveraging the structural versatility of MOF-derived precursors.

Synthesis of Ag/ZnO/C plasmonic photocatalyst with enhanced adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity to antibiotics

Jinjuan Xue,Shuaishuai Ma,Yuming Zhou,Zewu Zhang,Ping Jiang

A novel Ag/ZnO/C plasmonic photocatalyst was synthesized via a facile calcination and photodeposition route. Samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS). The results indicated that Ag and ZnO nanoparticles sized 5–10 nm were uniformly dispersed on the surface of the carbonaceous layers in Ag/ZnO/C composites. The adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity were investigated by adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) in aqueous solution. The results showed that the obtained Ag/ZnO/C sample exhibited higher adsorption capacity and enhanced UV and visible light driven photocatalytic activity to TC-HCl compared to ZnO/C and pure ZnO. With the presence of Ag nanoparticles and carbonaceous layers incorporated in the structure, the Ag/ZnO/C composites can make use of not only the UV region of sunlight, but also the visible region and efficiently promote photogenerated electron separation and transportation as well as generating more active reaction sites, which synergistically facilitate the photocatalysis process. Our present work provides a simple and new pathway for the design of ZnO-based catalysts that respond to both UV and visible light and promotes their practical application in various environmental and energy issues driven by solar light.

Hollow metal organic frameworks-derived porous ZnO/C nanocages as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Yonghai Song,Yaqin Chen,Jiafeng Wu,Yuanyuan Fu,Rihui Zhou,Shouhui Chen,Li Wang

In the contemporary era, energy demands are ever-growing and a significant number of people are concerned about environmental pollution caused by the burning of fossil fuels. Therefore, it is a striking problem for the researchers to pursue renewable energy and sustainable energy to deal with the environmental and energy crisis. In this work, a novel hybrid hollow porous ZnO/C nanocages with high specific surface areas of 256 m 2  g −1 and high carbon content in weight of about 50% used as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) were synthesized by a one-step pyrolysis of hollow metal organic framework material MOF-5 as both precursor and self-sacrificing template under N 2 atmosphere. The hollow porous ZnO/C nanocages released an initial discharge capacity of 1928 mA h g −1 at the current density of 100 mA g −1 and remained a high reversible capacity of 750 mA h g −1 after 100 cycles. According to the results of electrochemical measurements, the hollow porous ZnO/C nanocages also showed a good rate capability of 351 mA h g −1 at a relative large current density of 2 A g −1 . The excellent electrochemical performance was mainly due to the special nanostructures of the fabricated materials. Hence, the as-resulted hollow porous ZnO/C nanocages are promising anode materials for LIBs.

Pseudocapacitive Li+ intercalation in ZnO/ZnO@C composites enables high-rate lithium-ion storage and stable cyclability

Qin Li,Han Zhang,Shuaifeng Lou,Yunteng Qu,Pengjian Zuo,Yulin Ma,Xinqun Cheng,Chunyu Du,Yunzhi Gao,Geping Yin

Metallic oxide ZnO is considered to be a promising alternative anode material for lithium ion battery because of its high theoretical capacities (978   mA   h   g −1 ). However, its inherent low electronic conductivity and undesirable large volume change result in inferior electrochemical performances and hinder its practical application. Herein, ZnO/ZnO@C composites are prepared by a simple carbonization process of ZnO/ZnO@ZIFs-8, which are constructed by using ZnO particles as both template and zinc sources for zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) preparation via a facile solution reaction. When evaluated as anode for lithium ion batteries, the as-prepared composites show an initial capacity of 878   mA   h   g −1 at current density of 0.1   A   g −1 with high capacity retention of 95.6% after 50 cycles, and an initial capacity of 359   mA   h   g −1 tested at 5.0   A   g −1 with a capacity retention of 85.3% after 500 cycles, exhibiting outstanding cycling stability and excellent rate capability. The ameliorated electrochemical performances are mainly attributed to the elevated conductivity and cushioning effects provided by carbon framework derived from ZIF-8, and the enhanced pseudocapacitance behavior originated from the decreased size of ZnO particles and high surface area of ZIFs-derived carbon.

Synergistic Catalysis and Deactivation Analysis of Ru/ZnO/C in Hydrogen-Transfer Reductive Catalytic Fractionation of Poplar Wood

Wenjing Guo,Qing Zhao,Yadong Bi,Kailin Wang,Mengming Wang,Baozhen Wu,Xinli Tong

A series of metal oxide promoters were incorporated into the Ru/C catalyst by the impregnation method. Notably, the addition of ZnO demonstrated a pronounced promoting effect on the hydrogen-transfer reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) of poplar wood. The 1 wt% Ru/ZnO/C catalyst achieved a total phenolic monomer yield of 34.2 %, even surpassing the commercial 5 wt% Ru/C catalyst despite its lower Ru loading. This enhancement stems from the synergistic interaction between ZnO-derived Lewis acid sites and Ru metal nanoparticles. Furthermore, the influences of key parameters such as reaction temperature, catalyst dosage, molar ratio of ZnO to Ru and solvent on the RCF activity were systematically investigated. During recycling process, the Ru/ZnO/C catalyst exhibited gradual deactivation, accompanied by an increased proportion of unsaturated phenolic monomers in the product distribution, indicating a decline in hydrogenation capacity. The deactivation behavior of the Ru/ZnO/C catalyst was characterized using BET, XPS, TEM, and ICP techniques, and tentative regeneration attempts were employed on the spent catalyst.

Bimetallic CuZn-MOFs derived Cu-ZnO/C catalyst for reductive amination of nitroarenes with aromatic aldehydes tandem reaction

Wei She,Jing Wang,Xuewei Li,Jingfang Li,Guijie Mao,Weizuo Li,Guangming Li

Tuning of the metal–metal/oxide interaction is a vital route to enhance the performance of the supported catalysts. In this study, a Cu/Zn bimetallic MOFs was synthesized through a simple solvothermal method by using an adenine rigid biomolecule acted as organic linker. Furthermore, a ZnO/nitrogen-doped carbon composite supported Cu catalyst (named as Cu-ZnO/NC-BMOFs) derived from the bimetallic CuZn-MOFs was obtained via one-pot pyrolysis method. The developed Cu-ZnO/NC-BMOFs catalyst was tested for hydrogenation-amination tandem reaction. The bimetallic CuZn-MOFs with the uniformly dispersed Cu and Zn centers acted as a self-sacrificing template, which could facilitate the derived catalyst with strengthened Cu-ZnO interaction, high dispersity, and more N species. All of these advantages give the developed Cu-ZnO/NC-BMOFs catalyst with higher performance in hydrogenation-amination tandem reaction compared with traditional Cu/ZnO/NC-IWI (synthesized by incipient wetness impregnation) catalyst. The Cu-ZnO/NC-BMOFs exhibits good stability for the recycling experiments with a negligible loss in its performance. More importantly, the Cu-ZnO/NC-BMOFs catalyst could convert nitroarenes into the corresponding imines or secondary amines with excellent selectivity (>90.0%). This bimetallic MOFs-derived strategy may provide a way for fabricating NC supported catalysts in other tandem reactions.
