A quadruple-site, zwitterion-engineered, and antifouling fiber for efficient uranium extraction from seawater

Qiang Xian,Hao Li,Xingrui Tang,Shibing Zuo,Jun Wen

Uranium extraction from seawater (UES) represents a crucial strategy for addressing the shortage of terrestrial uranium resources. To effectively extract uranium from seawater, the adsorbents must overcome the key drawbacks of insufficient adsorption affinity, severe salt-shrinkage effects, and significant biofouling. In this study, a highly efficient fibrous adsorbent designated PG-AO-PO 3 is developed, by integrating three strategic design elements: (1) constructing quadruple multi-site coordination, (2) in situ formation of zwitterionic units, and (3) incorporation of a highly effective antimicrobial polymer. The uranium adsorption mechanism demonstrated that the amidoxime, amide, guanidine and phosphate groups undergo multi-site coordination with uranium, so that the uranium extraction performance is significantly enhanced. The introduced PO 3 groups form zwitterionic structures through a proton transfer process, enabling the PG-AO-PO 3 fibers to exhibit excellent resistance to both salt-shrinkage effect and marine biofouling. Consequently, the uranium uptake amount of the PG-AO-PO 3 in natural seawater after 35 days was up to 8.6 mg/g. Due to its low cost, simple preparation process, high uranium capacity and excellent biofouling resistance, PG-AO-PO 3 poses a promising adsorbent for industrial-scale UES. Super-Hydrated Supramolecular Hydrogel with Persistent Minimal Friction Enabled by Zwitterion-Driven Microphase Separation

Danli Hu,Desheng Liu,Dan Ding,Xiarong Zhang,Jie Huang,Yixian Wang,Bin Li,Yaozhong Lu,Yanzhao He,Tao Wu,Xiaolong Wang

A fundamental challenge for lubricating hydrogels is the inherent trade-off between mechanical robustness and interfacial hydration, necessitating new approaches to achieve both properties. To address this, we engineered an ultra-high strength novel supramolecular lubricating hydrogel leveraging zwitterion-driven microphase separation strategy. The supramolecular lubricating hydrogel P(NASC-co-MPC) was fabricated through a two-step procedure: dissolution of the strong H-bonding N -acryloylsemicarbazide (NASC) and the zwitterionic 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) in a DMSO/H 2 O mixed solvent, subsequently phase separation-induced H-bonding reconstruction triggered in deionized water. The mechanical properties of the P(NASC-co-MPC) supramolecular hydrogels can be tailored by varying the molar fraction of MPC, yielding tensile strength from 5.47 to 8.76 MPa and Young’s modulus from 19.90 to 98.50 MPa, alongside compressive strength from 5.15 to 9.03 MPa and compressive modulus from 8.25 to 22.40 MPa at 50% strain. Interestingly, the incorporation of additional MPC facilitates the interfacial hydration capacity of P(NASC-co-MPC) supramolecular hydrogels, leading to improved lubrication performance. The resulting best-performing P(NASC-co-MPC) hydrogel exhibits extremely exceptional lubrication performance (friction coefficient as low as 0.057) under physiological conditions, comparable to natural articular cartilage. This supramolecular hydrogel design strategy provides a versatile proposal for developing advanced lubricating materials potential in cartilage repair, anti-adhesion barriers, and anti-fouling coatings.

Enhancing Water-Lubricated Tribological Performance of Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene via Zwitterion Blending

Xiangrong Li,Yanfei Fang,Peiyan Cheng,Tingping Lei,Xigui Wang,Tianliang Lin

This study developed an interface-functionalized ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) by incorporating a strongly hydratable zwitterion, sulfobetaine methacryloxyethyl (SBMA), to enhance its wear resistance under synovial fluid lubrication. Composite materials with SBMA gradients (0–7.5 wt%) were prepared via melt blending. Pin-on-disc tribological tests demonstrated that at 7.5 wt% SBMA loading, the friction coefficient decreased by 37% under an 8 N load, while the volumetric wear rate reduced by 49% at a 30 N load. Multiscale characterization revealed dual synergistic mechanisms: (1) interfacial hydration reinforcement - the sulfonate group in SBMA formed hydrogen-bonded hydration layers, decreasing the contact angle from 69° to 56° and suppressing wear through hydration lubrication; and (2) structural influence - SBMA prevents crystallization by acting as a plasticizer. But as concentration rises, SBMA aggregates, reducing the plasticizing impact and enhancing mechanical qualities. This study provides a novel strategy that combine superior hydration effect to enhance tribological performance of UHMWPE.

Fabrication of polyamide/zwitterion functionalized mesoporous silica nanofiltration membrane with highly enhanced antifouling performance

Yongheng Yin,Hui Xu,Chenyang Zhang,Weiyuan Hao,Qiying Xia,Shanmin Gao

Background The nanofiltration membrane plays an important role in wastewater treatment and desalination. Fabricating the hydrophilic separation layer is a good way to construct nanofiltration membranes with both high water flux and antifouling performance. Methods The chemical and physical structure of the membrane surface are optimized simultaneously to enhance its performance. Three kinds of zwitterions bearing different positively and negatively charged units are grated onto mesoporous silica (MS), then the functionalized MS nanoparticles are introduced into polyamide separation layer on porous polyethersulfone substrate to construct hybrid nanofiltration membranes. The influence of zwitterion functionalized MS on the structure and comprehensive performance of hybrid membranes is thoroughly investigated by experimental and computational means. Significant findings The existence of zwitterion functionalized MS overcomes the tradeoff effect between water flux and salt rejection. The hybrid membrane shows a high water flux of 334.0 L m   −   2 h   −   1 MPa −1 and a superior flux recovery ratio of 94.1% against bovine serum albumin. The corrected zero-point binding energies of three kinds of zwitterions with water molecules are computed for the first time, the carboxybetaine methacrylate shows the highest energy of 36.99 kJ mol −1 , explaining why the as-prepared hybrid membranes possess outstanding antifouling performance.

Synergistic effect of zwitterion-modified cellulose nanocrystals and chitin nanofibrils on regulated composite membranes

Wang Qin,Wang Ning,Zhu Ge,Lin Ning

Membranes organized by rigid cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), the highly crystalline nano-objects, exhibit a wide range of potential applications attributed to their numerous advantages including excellent hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, high crystallinity, and superior strength. However, the correlation between mechanical stiffness and structural arrangements for CNC-based membranes is still a challenge, particularly in a predictive manner for the tailored macroscale performance. This study proposes a strategy of regulating the surface properties, charges and stiffness of CNC composite membranes with the incorporation of the zwitterion and chitin nanofibrils (ChNFs) components. The synthesized zwitterion ( n , n -dipropionate methyl ester octadecylamine) endows the modified CNCs with a pH-sensitively charged surface, displaying the cationic form in the acidic condition while converted to anionic surface in the alkaline state. The ionic “bridge” between semi-flexible nanofibrils and rigid CNCs can effectively reduce the nanohardness of the composite membranes, taking the uniform surface and microstructural morphologies. Zwitterion-treated liquid crystal composites for low-energy-consumption smart windows and wearable devices

Ping Yu,Zemin He,Yuzhen Zhao,Huimin Zhang,Haiquan Zhang,Zongcheng Miao,Wenbo Shen

As an important type of liquid crystal (LC)-based smart windows for indoor illumination/privacy protection switching and energy conservation, the LC devices from polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) have gained more attention for developing flexible intelligent optical films. However, higher voltages are generally needed to drive these devices owing to the large content of polymers and the strong anchoring effect on mesogenic molecules, which not only induces the danger of use but also increases the energy consumption of the devices. In this work, a polymerizable zwitterionic compound, which has little problem with ion accumulation compared to typical electrolytes, is explored as a new class of coating. Zwitterion-treated LC devices are also fabricated using different processing methods. Both the addition of zwitterionic layers and the processing techniques have profound effects on the electric-optical performance of the resultant devices. The driving voltage of the devices is optimized from 58 V to 15–18 V (∼2.9 V/μm to ∼0.75–0.9 V/μm) and the contrast ratio is still above 200. The haze of the optimized flexible smart film is about 89.78% and 5.38% in field-off and field-on states respectively. The electrically switchable transmittance of the flexible zwitterion-treated LC devices is also implemented on windows and the human body. Such a method offers a simple strategy for fabricating the LC devices promising for applications in wearable devices as well as in low-energy-consumption smart windows.

Fabrication of Nafion/zwitterion-functionalized covalent organic framework composite membranes with improved proton conductivity

Yan Li,Hong Wu,Yongheng Yin,Li Cao,Xueyi He,Benbing Shi,Jinzhao Li,Mingzhao Xu,Zhongyi Jiang

The construction of efficient proton transport channels in ion-conductive membranes is crucial to proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Herein, zwitterion-functionalized covalent organic framework (Z-COF) with both ammonium groups and sulfonic acid groups was synthesized and blended with Nafion to prepare Nafion/Z-COF composite proton exchange membranes. The polymer-like feature of the Z-COF imparted favorable interactions between Z-COF and Nafion, and thus promoted the dispersion of Z-COF and the reorganization of ion clusters. The incorporation of Z-COF enhanced water retention property and the sulfonic groups on Z-COF provided additional proton-transport sites within the membranes. As a result, the low-energy-barrier paths for proton transport were created. The composite membranes with 10 wt% of Z-COF exhibited the highest proton conductivity of 0.22 S cm −1 at 80 °C and 100% RH, which was 57.1% higher than that of recast Nafion membrane. The enhanced proton conductivity also afforded the composite membrane a 45.7% increase in maximum power density of single fuel cell at 80 °C and 50% RH. The effects of Z-COF loading on membrane morphology, polymer chain mobility, thermal stability, water uptake and dimensional stability were also investigated.

Tuning the Microstructure of a Zwitterion-Functionalized Polyethylenimine Loose NF Membrane for Dye Desalination

Lingfeng Zhao,Min Zhang,Guanhua Liu,Anan Zhao,Xuesong Gong,Shuo Shi,Xiaobing Zheng,Jing Gao,Yanjun Jiang

Developing a highly efficient and anti-fouling nanofiltration (NF) membrane for the desalination of dye wastewater is one of the hot environmental issues. In this study, loose NF membranes were facially prepared by glutaraldehyde (GA)-diffused crosslinking zwitterion-functionalized polyethylenimine (PEI-SBMA) and subsequent tannic acid (TA) surface modification. The microstructure of the membrane was tuned by optimizing the crosslinking condition to enhance the selectivity of dye/salt. The anti-fouling performance of the membrane was improved by the functionalization of the zwitterion and the adjustment of TA coating. Under optimal preparation conditions, the membrane performed high dye rejection [higher than 99% for fuchsin acid (AF) and methyl blue (MB)] and a high dye/salt selectivity of 93.95 with a water permeance of 118.5 LMH/bar, which were about 7.2 times and 49.5% higher than the membrane without crosslinking, respectively. In addition, the membrane showed enhanced anti-fouling ability and good long-term stability. The way of gradient crosslinking by GA diffusion to tune the microstructure of the loose NF membrane and the combination of zwitterions and TA coating could be useful candidates to enhance the membrane performance for water treatment.

Rutile TiO2 integrated zwitterion polyurethane composite films as an efficient photostable food packaging material

Naveed Athir,Sayyed Asim Ali Shah,Farooq Khurum Shehzad,Jue Cheng,Junying Zhang,Ling Shi

Zwitterion polyurethanes (ZPU) are used for non-fouling and antimicrobial surfaces but their sensitive nature under ultra-violet (UV) radiations limits the requirements of engineering materials . Herein, ZPU is successfully synthesized and then prepared different TiO 2 /ZPU composites, aiming to increase the service life of ZPU and to form active film for food packaging applications. The thermo-mechanical results revealed that the 4% TiO 2 /ZPU sample exhibits better performance, as evidenced through tensile testing and surface morphology analysis. The UV–Vis spectra results indicated that the rutile TiO 2 nanoparticles can enhance the UV absorption and visible light reflectance, decreasing photoaging properties of composites thereby prolonging its shelf life. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy ( SEM) observation after 5 h irradiation of UV light confirmed the photostability of TiO 2 /ZPU composite film . Further, the antioxidant ability of ZPU is increased from 51% to 71% with TiO 2 . The results of antimicrobial activity of TiO 2 /ZPU demonstrate strong bacterial growth inhibition against E. coli that regards its suitability for food and other packaging applications. Besides, the food preservation ability is monitored by visual changes of tomato fruit. In essence, we anticipate that the TiO 2 /ZPU composite films possessed all expected features to be considered as photostable material for food packaging.

Albumin-gated zwitterion-stabilized mesoporous silica nanorod as a pH-responsive drug delivery system

Huaxin Zhang,Qinghua Xia,Dan Zhou

Silica nanoparticles as drug delivery systems (DDS) have received huge attention in nanomedicine research. However, their drug release processes were usually discussed in the absence of proteins, which are abundant in real delivery media and likely to affect the release behaviors. In this work, novel pH-sensitive silica-based DDSs were constructed using the endogenous protein, human serum albumin (HSA), as the gatekeeper, and their release properties in protein-containing media were measured for the first time. As-synthesized mesoporous silica nanorod (MSNR) was modified with zwitterions to suppress the nonspecific adsorption of protein and to improve the dispersity. HSA was fixed onto MSNR through drug-protein interactions and covalent bonds, respectively. Benzoic-imine bonds were introduced into the designs to realize pH responsiveness. The fluorescence quenching effect of drugs on HSA was used to monitor the drug release in simulated body fluids containing proteins. The results indicated that protein gating could effectively reduce premature release in normal blood environment. The endogenous protein capping, high dispersity and stability, considerable loading content, low cytotoxicity and favorable responsiveness to acidic microenvironment enable the present structures to be promising carriers for chemotherapy drugs.

Nanofiltration membrane based on graphene oxide crosslinked with zwitterion-functionalized polydopamine for improved performances

Chongbin Wang,Yuanyuan Feng,Jianxin Chen,Xiao Bai,Liang Ren,Cai Wang,Ke Huang,Hong Wu

Graphene oxide (GO)-based membranes have received increasing attention recently in liquid separation field. However, the abundant hydrophilic groups of GO nanosheets would cause instability of GO-based membranes under hydrated conditions. In addition, GO-based membranes often suffer from severe membrane fouling in practical application. In this study, polydopamine (PDA) crosslinked GO was synthesized by simply immersing GO into the dopamine alkaline solution and used to prepare GO@PDA/PES composite membranes. Then, a zwitterionic polymer, synthesized by quaterisation reaction of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and sodium chloroacetate, was grafted on the surface of PDA crosslinked GO membrane via Michael addition reaction between amino groups of PEI and quinone groups of PDA. The bonding between GO nanosheets reinforced the structural stability, resulting in the formation of water stable membranes. The grafted zwitterionic polymer coating could improve the membrane surface hydrophilicity, endowing the membranes promising anti-fouling ability. The resulting membrane achieved a flux of 49.5 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 with relatively high rejection of about 100%, 82% and 67% for Congo Red, Orange G and Methyl Orange respectively. The membrane exhibited good anti-fouling properties as well as structural stability under alcohol environments, showing considerable potential in water treatment.

Zwitterion-Coated Virus-Like Nanoparticles Enable Oral siRNA Delivery for Tumor Autophagy and Immune Activation

Shuangjun Li,Shengnan Li,Wen Li,Yue Hua,Ruyue Shi,Dongmei Zhao,Jiaxin Wang,Xiuhua Zhao

Oral delivery of nucleic acid therapeutics for cancer therapy encounters major challenges, such as gastrointestinal acidity, enzymatic degradation, mucus barriers, and P-glycoprotein (P-gp) efflux. To address these challenges, this study engineers virus-like nanoparticles encapsulating siCENPN nucleic acid complexes and irradiated tumor cells (ITC), further coated with zwitterionic bacterial cellulose derivatives (PB-BC-BY). This innovative formulation demonstrates enhanced mucus penetration, improves stability in gastrointestinal environments, and effective inhibition of P-gp-mediated efflux. The nanoparticles effectively deliver siRNA into tumor cells, resulting in marked downregulation of CENPN expression and strong autophagy induction. The autophagic tumor cells and ITCs subsequently stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) to secrete anti-tumor cytokines, thereby triggering an immune response. In vivo experiments confirm that orally administered nanoparticles successfully traverse the gastrointestinal barrier, enter systemic circulation, target tumors, and significantly inhibit tumor growth. Enhanced activation of dendritic cells, along with increased infiltration of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and Th1 cells in the tumor microenvironment, further confirms effective immune activation. Moreover, this treatment induces strong immune memory, prolonges survival, and provides substantial protection against tumor recurrence. This study presents a novel oral delivery strategy for nucleic acid therapeutics, offering an effective approach by simultaneously inducing tumor cell autophagy and promoting a robust immune-mediated anti-cancer response.
