Comparative study of chloroquine phosphate degradation by calcite/PMS and dolomite/PMS systems

Jing Wang,Ziyang Chu,Haibo Liu,Zhengyan Han,Tianhu Chen,Xuehua Zou,Dong Chen

Advanced oxidation processes employing natural carbonate minerals to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) have exhibited remarkable efficacy in the removal of organic pollutants. In this study, the differences in the degradation performance and mechanism of chloroquine phosphate (CQP) by calcite/PMS and dolomite/PMS systems were investigated. Experimental findings reveal that the calcite/PMS system demonstrates markedly superior removal under identical conditions, achieving 99 % CQP removal within 60 min. In contrast, the dolomite/PMS system only achieved 63 % CQP removal under the same conditions. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical quenching analyses identified singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) as the dominant reactive species in both systems. Quantitative assessments indicated that the calcite/PMS system generated more 1 O 2 (43.3 μM) compared to the dolomite/PMS system (35.4 μM.). This phenomenon was attributed to that calcite released more carbonate ions (CO 3 2− ) than dolomite. Although the two systems had different reaction rates, both achieved stable CQP removal over 90 % in a one-month continuous flow column experiments. This work developed the application potential of carbonate minerals in advanced oxidation systems. Furthermore, the findings contribute to better understanding and development of carbonate activated persulfate systems.

Efficient resource utilization of gypsum in the flotation separation of apatite from calcite

Shengzong Lan,Liuyang Dong,Peilun Shen,Haoran Su,Zhengchang Shen,Dianwen Liu

A large amount of the industrial byproduct gypsum can harm the environment, so developing an innovative approach for the utilization of gypsum is highly important. In this study, gypsum was employed to increase the flotation separation efficiency of apatite from calcite. The micro-flotation test revealed that sodium oleate could not separate the two minerals without a depressant. At pH 9, following the incorporation of gypsum, apatite achieved a recovery of 83.22 %, which was 51.49 % greater than that of calcite. The artificial mixed mineral test yielded a mixed concentrate with a P 2 O 5 recovery of 72.71 % and a grade of 25.88 %. Mineral surface properties were analyzed, revealing that gypsum enhanced the hydrophilicity of the calcite surface and inhibited NaOL adsorption on calcite but had a minimal impact on apatite. Ca 2+ in the slurry facilitated SO 4 2– adsorption on the calcite surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that phosphate species on the apatite surface could adsorb Ca 2+ from the solution, creating active sites for sodium oleate. Additionally, a higher concentration of S was observed on the calcite surface, suggesting that the adsorption capacity of gypsum dissolved in the slurry is greater on the surface of calcite. Surface morphology analysis revealed selective gypsum dissolved components adsorption on calcite rather than apatite, primarily within the 8–30 nm range, exhibiting uniform spot adsorption. These findings demonstrate the potential of gypsum as an inorganic depressant for calcite from various sources, enabling the flotation separation of apatite from calcite and thus providing a theoretical basis for the resource utilization of gypsum solid waste.

The flotation separation behavior of apatite from calcite using carboxymethyl chitosan as depressant

Tao Wang,Bo Feng,Yutao Guo,Wenpu Zhang,Yibei Rao,Chunhui Zhong,Liangzhu Zhang,Chen Cheng,Huihui Wang,Xianping Luo

The separation of apatite from calcite has been recognized as one of the most difficult subjects in mineral processing owing to their similar surface properties, thus finding high-efficiency depressants become the key for the separation. In this paper, carboxymethyl chitosan was tested as a potential selective depressant in the separation of apatite and calcite using sodium oleate (NaOL) as a collector. Contact angle measurements, adsorption tests, zeta potential tests, FTIR analysis and XPS analysis were performed to explain the selective depression mechanism of carboxymethyl chitosan. The micro-flotation experiment indicated that carboxymethyl chitosan had significantly depression effect on calcite but had a little influence on apatite at pulp pH 9. A series of mechanism tests show that the carboxymethyl chitosan adsorption quantity on calcite surface more than that on apatite surface, which is due to that carboxymethyl chitosan adsorbed on apatite surface by hydrogen bonding, while absorbed on calcite surface mainly through chemical chelating between Ca on mineral surface and –COO − on the depressant. Moreover, both apatite and carboxymethyl chitosan are negatively charged, strong electrostatic repulsive force and steric hindrance between carboxymethyl chitosan and apatite also make the carboxymethyl chitosan adsorb on apatite surface more difficult. These adsorption differences lead to the flotation separation of the two minerals.

Experimental and molecular dynamic simulation study on calcite-organic molecule-water interaction mechanism

Rukuan Chai,Yuetian Liu,Qianjun Liu,Wenhuan Gu

The mechanism of calcite-organic molecule-water interaction mechanism in oil-wet formation and alteration of carbonates is still ambiguous. This paper combines atomic force microscope (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation to investigate the regularity and mechanism of calcite-organic molecule-water interaction at the molecular scale. First, the calcite-organic molecule-water interaction regularities, i.e., wettability alteration process, were studied using AFM, XPS and MD. AFM, XPS and MD results all demonstrated that acetic acid adsorbs stably on the calcite surface and can-not be displaced by water molecules, while the resistance to water displacement of the other three organic molecules decreased with decreasing molecular polarity. Subsequently, MD was used to analyze the calcite-organic molecule-water interaction mechanism from three perspectives, including the organic molecule-calcite interaction, the organic molecule-organic/water molecule interaction, and the effect of polar molecules. In the organic molecule-calcite interaction, the adsorption intensity of organic molecules on calcite surface decreases as their molecular polarity decreases. Stronger molecular polarity results in tighter adsorption layer and lower adsorption energy. In the organic molecule-organic/water molecule interaction, the interaction intensity increases as the polarity difference between the two molecules decreases. Larger polarity difference causes stronger miscibility and lower interaction energy. For polar molecules effect, the presence of polar molecules stabilizes the non-polar molecules adsorption and diminishes the displacement efficiency of water molecules. Consequently, this paper proposes the bulk adsorption mechanism to reasonably explain the wettability formation and alteration mechanism of calcite surface, which is of great importance for targeted enhanced oil recovery studies.

The flotation separation of fluorite from calcite using hydroxypropyl starch as a depressant

Wenxing Zhu,Jianhua Pan,Xinyang Yu,Guichun He,Cheng Liu,Siyuan Yang,Yuhui Zeng,An Zeng,Taotao Liu

The effect of hydroxypropyl starch (HPS) on the flotation separation of fluorite from calcite using sodium oleate (NaOl) as a collector was studied. Micro-flotation results of single minerals showed that both fluorite and calcite presented good floatability in the presence of NaOl. However, by adding HPS before NaOl, the calcite flotation recovery was selectively reduced. The flotation of artificially mixed minerals confirmed that an efficient separation of fluorite from calcite could be achieved using the reagents scheme of HPS/NaOl. Zeta potential measurements demonstrated that HPS prevented the NaOl adsorption onto the calcite surface while it did not inhibit the interaction of NaOl with the fluorite surface. Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) analysis was also revealed that the selective adsorption of HPS onto the calcite surface.

Interaction mechanism of calcite and four representative organic molecules: Experiments and DFT study

Rukuan Chai,Yuetian Liu,Qianjun Liu,Jing Xin

Calcite crystal-organic molecule interaction governs the wettability formation and alteration of carbonate reservoirs, and influences the oil recovery. However, its in-depth interaction mechanism in atomic scale have not been classified clearly. Regarding this, this study combines the atomic force microscopy (AFM), fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) to systemically investigate the adsorption regularities and mechanisms of four representative organic molecules of crude oil on calcite surface. AFM results illustrated that the adsorption amount of the four organic molecules on calcite surface is in the order of benzoic acid>pyridine>thiophene>toluene. FTIR and XPS results explicated that the COOR and OH functional groups are formed in the benzoic acid adsorption; the Ca of calcite surface and N of pyridine are involved in the interaction, and OH functional groups are also formed in pyridine adsorption; only the OH bond is formed in thiophene adsorption, and no bond is formed in toluene adsorption. DFT results verified the experiments results and further revealed the interaction mechanism in atomic scale. Firstly, DFT results showed that the adsorption energies of benzoic acid, pyridine, thiophene and toluene on calcite surface are −1.39 eV, −0.97 eV, −0.49 eV and −0.31 eV, respectively. Secondly, DFT results explicated that the Ca-O ionic bond and H O covalent bond are formed in benzoic acid-calcite interaction; the Ca-N ionic bond and H O hydrogen bond are formed in calcite-pyridine interaction; only the H O hydrogen bond is formed in calcite-thiophene interaction; No chemical bond is formed in calcite-toluene interaction.

High concentration phosphate removal by calcite and its subsequent utilization for tetracycline removal

Zhenxuan Li,Mengxiao Guo,Xiaowen Sun,Lucheng Li,Xiaolan Guo,Lidong Huang,Jiangtian Xiao,Defu Xu,Dagang Liu

The excess phosphate and tetracycline (TC) in natural environments potentially threatens ecosystem. Few studies were conducted on efficient and cost-effective method for dealing with these pollutants together. we attempted to reutilize this abandoned calcite for the removal of other pollutant in wastewater, such as tetracycline. Firstly, removal of high concentration phosphate by calcite was studied in batch experiments. Thereafter, removal of TC by this used calcite (P-loaded calcite) was investigated under different conditions: pH, phosphate concentration, dried state and humid state. Using calcite for high concentration phosphate removal, the results showed that (1) concentrations of phosphate higher than 30 mg.L −1 , resulted in a significant phosphate precipitation on calcite surface at both pH7.7 and pH 8.3 within 24 h. The corresponding pH and calcium results confirmed this precipitation occurrence; (2) the precipitated phase was supposed to be amorphous calcium phosphate through the results of IR, XPS, XRD and BET analysis. Compared to that by pure calcite, the TC removal rate by P-loaded calcite increased significantly with the initial phosphate concentration in both cases of Humid Experiment and Dried Experiment . This may be attributed to the adsorption of TC on the precipitated amorphous calcium phosphate, which has a larger specific surface and increasingly generates > Ca + sites. From the similarity of TC removal rate by P-loaded calcite between pH7.7 and pH 8.3, it is hypothesized that TC removal is due to TCH 2 ° and TCH- adsorption on > Ca + sites. The minor difference of TC removal rate by P-loaded calcites between Humid Experiment and Dried Experiment is mainly due to slight dissolution of precipitated amorphous calcium phosphate. Our research will serve as reference knowledge for the reutilization of abandoned calcite in phosphate removal, which provides a new way to reduce the wasted materials and environmental risks induced by tetracycline.

Polyvinylidene fluoride cladded calcite tablet for phosphate removal and reclamation from aqueous solution

Zhenxing Wang,Chenling Zhang

We report a core-shell tablet by encapsuling calcite in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) capsules. The as-prepared material was used for the phosphate removal and reclamation from phosphate-containing wastewater. The PVDF shell exhibited desirable performance in the formation of the Ca 2+ supersaturation around the surface of the as-prepared material. The calcium-phosphate precipitates could be easily collected in the form of hydroxyapatite and brushite without impurities. The phosphate reclamation capacity achieved 7.66 mg g −1 . The equilibrium could be attained within 2 h. The best performance could be attained when initial solution pH ranged in 4–9, whereas extreme acidic/alkalic pH exhibited negative effect. In addition, the as-prepared material exhibited desirable reusability, and the phosphate reclamation capacity could be effectively recovered by calcination at 650 °C. Findings from this study proposed a promising pathway to remove and reclaim phosphate simultaneously from aqueous solution.

Investigation into the flotation of malachite, calcite and quartz with three phosphate surfactants

Hongli Fan,Jingqin Qin,Jun Liu,Guangyi Liu,Xianglin Yang

The flotation response of malachite, calcite and quartz to bis (2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (DEHPA), dibutyl phosphate (DBP) and tributyl phosphate (TBP) was evaluated by micro-flotation experiments. The results showed that DEHPA exhibited an impressive flotation selectivity for malachite against calcite/quartz in the pH range of 6.0–9.0 and achieved superior malachite flotation recovery over DBP and TBP. The flotation mechanism of DEHPA to malachite was farther investigated through adsorption, contact angle, zeta potential, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The findings inferred that DEHPA reacted with the surface copper atom of malachite via its O atoms of P OH and P O to form the hydrophobic surface complexes of Cu(II)-DEHPA. The double active center of the P( O)OH group might be contributed to the stronger affinity of DEHPA and DBP to malachite than that of TBP with the single active center of the P O group. TBP returned the lowest malachite recovery among the three phosphate surfactants, even it has more hydrophobic-carbon atoms than those of DBP.

The role of sodium phytate in the flotation separation of smithsonite from calcite

Long Wang,Weijian Lyu,Weiguang Zhou,Hao Zhang

The effective flotation separation of smithsonite and calcite has always been a thorny problem due to their relatively similar physicochemical property. Developing efficient and selective depressant is the key to address this obstacle. In this study, sodium phytate (SP) was introduced as a novel depressor for high-efficient flotation separation of smithsonite and calcite. Influences in flotation performances induced by SP and its possible underlying mechanism were thoroughly studied by various advanced detection techniques. Flotation tests indicated that calcite flotation was significantly depressed, whereas the smithsonite flotation was barely affected. Zeta potential analysis showed that SP adsorbed stronger on calcite than smithsonite. Furthermore, the SP adsorption exhibited little influence on the subsequent sodium oleate (NaOl) adsorption onto smithsonite, whereas it strongly hindered the NaOl adsorption on the calcite surface. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis further unveiled that SP weakly adsorbed on the smithsonite surface through electrostatic attraction that did not interfered the subsequent NaOl adsorption, whereas SP chemically adsorbed on the calcite surface strongly which greatly blocked the following adsorption of NaOl on the calcite surface. As a result, the calcite flotation was selectively depressed and the flotation separation of smithsonite from calcite was eventually achieved.

In situ observations of the occlusion of a clay-sugar compound within calcite

Jialin Chi,Chonghao Jia,Wenjun Zhang,Christine V. Putnis,Lijun Wang

Organo–clay complexes could be adsorbed and subsequently occluded into soil mineral matrices under local supersaturated solution conditions, leading to inaccessibility of microorganisms and their extracellular enzymes, which plays an important contribution to stabilization of soil organic matter (SOM) and affects their biogeochemical cycle. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here we apply Raman spectroscopy to analyze the LAPONITE®-sugar (monosaccharide glucose (Glu) and 5/20 kDa dextran (Dex-5/20) polysaccharides) interactions and use in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) to observe their occlusion processes within calcite. As shown by Raman spectra, the LAPONITE®-sugar complexes form with the mix of sugars and LAPONITE®, and the degree of elution is mediated by the molecular weight of sugars and more Glu would be eluted compared with Dex-5 and Dex-20. Then the LAPONITE®-sugar complexes could be occluded within calcite observed by AFM, and the occlusion of the LAPONITE®-sugar complexes within calcite hillocks are influenced by molecular weight with the trend of Dex-20 > Dex-5 > Glu. The binding force between sugars and calcite (104) surfaces are measured by AFM-based dynamic force spectroscopy (DFS) to record the molecular-scale interactions, and high-molecular weight sugar such as Dex-20 exhibits strongest binds with calcite surfaces as shown by DFS data. These in situ nanoscale observations and single-molecule determinations in a model system may provide insights into the clay-SOM-calcite fixation mechanisms by sugar in alkaline soils, with potential implications for global carbon cycling.

Selective adsorption of tannic acid on calcite and implications for separation of fluorite minerals

Chenhu Zhang,Sun Wei,Yuehua Hu,Honghu Tang,Jiande Gao,Zhigang Yin,Qingjun Guan

Selective adsorption of tannic acid (TA) on calcite surfaces and the implications of this process for the separation of fluorite ore were studied by microflotation tests, surface adsorption experiments, zeta potential measurements, UV–vis analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The microflotation tests indicated that TA, when added before sodium oleate (NaOl), could selectively depress calcite from fluorite at pH 7. Surface adsorption experiments revealed that TA hinders the interaction of NaOl with calcite. The zeta potential of calcite became more negative with TA than with NaOl. However, the characteristic features of TA adsorption were not observed on fluorite, suggesting that the dominant adsorption sites are dissimilar on the fluorite and calcite surfaces in the pulp. UV–vis spectroscopy, XPS, and solution chemistry analysis were utilized to obtain a better understanding of the mechanism for selective adsorption of TA as well as the key factors determined by the Ca 2+ and Ca(OH) + components on the mineral surfaces. A possible adsorption mechanism along with an adsorption mode is proposed for the surface interaction between TA and calcite.
