Bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) was prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The BiOBr promoted detoxification of cylindrospermopsin (CYN) under UV ( λ < 350 nm) and visible light ( λ > 420 nm) illumination was studied. The results revealed that the toxic uracil unit of CYN was removed, and the carboxylic group of the degraded product was also decomposed, to give the innoxious tricyclic guanidine product under the title conditions. In contrast, the traditional Fenton reagents (Fe 2+ and H 2 O 2 ) limited to remove the uracil moiety of CYN with the carboxylic group intact. Presumably, the decarboxylation ability of BiOBr was induced by Br 4 p valence band hole ( h Br 4 p + ), and the degradation mechanism was also proposed based on the experimental results and theoretical calculation.

The application of the herbicide chlorimuron-ethyl has a lasting toxic effect on some succession crops. Here, a bacterium capable of utilizing chlorimuron-ethyl as the sole source of nitrogen was isolated from the contaminated soil and was identified as Enterobacter ludwigii sp. CE-1, and its detoxification and degradation of the herbicide were then examined. The biodegradation of chlorimuron-ethyl by the isolate CE-1 was significantly accelerated with increasing concentration (1–10 mg/l) and temperature (20–40 °C). The optimal pH for the degradation of chlorimuron-ethyl by the isolate CE-1 was pH 7.0. A pathway for the biodegradation of chlorimuron-ethyl by the isolate CE-1 was proposed, in which it could be first converted into 2-amino-4-chloro-6-methoxypyrimidine and an intermediate product by the cleavage of the sulfonylurea bridge and then transformed into saccharin via hydrolysis and amidation. The plant height and fresh weight of corn that had been incubated in nutrient solution containing 0.2 mg/l of chlorimuron-ethyl significantly recovered to 83.9% and 83.1% compared with those in the uninoculated control, although the root growth inhibition of chlorimuron-ethyl could not be alleviated after inoculation for 14 d. The results indicate that the isolate CE-1 is a promising bacterial resource for the biodegradation and detoxification of chlorimuron-ethyl.

Amygdalin (Amy) is metabolized into cyanide in vivo, which may lead to fatal poisoning after oral administration. The defense mechanisms against toxic cyanide have not yet been adequately studied. In this study, comparative toxicokinetics study of Amy was performed in normal and pseudo germ-free rats. The efficiency of cyanide release was significant higher in normal group when given a single oral dose of 440 mg/kg (50% median lethal dose). Thiocyanate, the detoxification metabolite, was firstly detected in feces, caecum, and intestinal microbiota incubation enzymic system. The results suggest intestinal microbiota is involved in bidirectional regulation of toxicity and detoxification of Amy. We further identified the species related to cyanogenesis of Amy with metagenomic sequencing, such as Bifidobacterium pseudolongum, Marvinbryantia formatexigens, and Bacteroides fragilis. Functional analysis of microbiota reveals the detoxification potential of intestinal microbiota for cyanide. Sulfurtransferase superfamily, such as rhodanese, considered as main detoxification enzymes for cyanide, are largely found in Coriobacteriaceae bacterium, Butyricicoccus porcorum, Akkermansia muciniphila, etc. Besides, cyanoamino acid metabolism pathway dominated by Escherichia coli may contribute to the detoxification metabolism of cyanide. In summary, intestinal microbiota may be the first line of defense against the toxicity induced by Amy.

A novel slant perforated mesh-plate photoreactor (SPPR) was designed and fabricated. The central assembly of SPPR was an array of slant perforated mesh-plate coated with TiO 2 (P25). The performance of SPPR in water detoxification was evaluated with regard to the degradation of phenol as the target pollutant. The effects of slant plate tilt angle (α) and perforated plate opening aperture diameter on SPPR performance were investigated and analyzed. The photocatalytic performance of SPPR increased with decreasing α. The SPPR with an α of 15° and a pore size of 1 mm showed the best performance with 9.17 h required to reach 80% of phenol degradation (4-L, initial concentration: 15 mg/L). The mass transfer was introduced into the kinetic reaction model, and mass transfer coefficients were calculated for SPPRs with different structures. Flow rate and initial pollutant concentration were investigated for their effects on degradation efficiency. In addition, the activity of SPPR under natural sunlight has also been tested to explore its potential to be applied in practice.

Manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) has been recognized as one of the natural systems' most active mineral oxidants. However, when it comes to catalytic oxidation of antibiotic applications, pure MnO 2 falls short in delivering satisfactory performance. Hence, a set of Fe 3+ -doped porous MnO 2 (0.02Fe–MnO 2 , 0.1Fe–MnO 2 , and 0.14Fe–MnO 2 ) nanoparticles were synthesized here via a convenient and energy-efficient one-step reaction method. A series of experiments revealed that Fe-doping strategy enhances the properties of MnO 2 host by suppressing the crystalline structure, increasing the amount of surface oxygen defects, and modifying the Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ ratio. Specifically, the tetracycline (TC) removal efficiency of 0.14Fe–MnO 2 reaches 92% without the need for any additional co-oxidant, representing a 20% improvement over pristine MnO 2 nanoparticles . Moreover, this process shows a fast dynamic (achieving 70% of TC removal in just 5 min) and demonstrates pH-resistance, maintaining high TC removal efficiency (≥90%) over a wide pH range of 3.0–9.0. Mechanical studies reveal that the degradation of TC can be attributed to the oxidation by reactive oxygen radicals and Mn 3+ , with 1 O 2 being the primary radical involved in the reaction, accounting for 55% of TC removal. Importantly, cytotoxicity testing indicates that the biotoxicity of TC toward organisms can be effectively mitigated using 0.14Fe–MnO 2 nanomaterial . This study presents a readily applicable candidate for economically and conveniently eliminating of environmental TC pollution, thereby reducing the threat posed by TC pollution to the ecosystem.

Zirconium-based metal–organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) have shown great promise as effective catalysts for the hydrolytic degradation of organophosphorus nerve agents. However, their high catalytic activity was usually observed in aqueous environments or high humidity conditions, challenging their applicability as chemical protective materials. In this study, we developed hydrogel composite membranes integrating Zr-MOF catalysts with multifunctional polymeric components, enabling the efficient solid-phase degradation of the nerve agent simulant, dimethyl-4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP), under ambient conditions (40% relative humidity). These membranes were prepared by embedding MOF-808 within a hybrid polymer matrix composed of poly(1-vinylimidazole) (PVIM) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). In this rationally designed material, MOF-808 supplies the catalytic sites for hydrolysis, PVA contributes to water retention, and PVIM acts as a nonvolatile base to buffer the reaction environment. The resulting composite membranes demonstrate high catalytic activity and good recyclability for solid-phase DMNP hydrolysis under ambient conditions, surpassing the performance of many previously reported Zr-MOF-based materials under similar conditions. These findings represent a meaningful advancement toward the deployment of Zr-MOFs in practical chemical defense applications.

Thermo-chemical conversion (TCC) is an effective strategy in the detoxification of waste salt (WS) containing hazardous organics, which can be enhanced by molten salt, e.g., molten NaOH-KOH. However, the microscopic process remains largely unclear. With the WS collecting from a pesticide enterprise, this study comprehensively investigated the pyrolysis and combustion behaviors based on TG and FTIR. Particularly, molten NaOH-KOH mediation was explored. The results showed that combustion appeared to be more advantageous than pyrolysis for WS detoxification. Moreover, attributing to the enhanced heat transfer and catalytic activity of molten NaOH-KOH, the detoxification was promoted, manifested as a decrease in the peaked temperature of organic reactions (from 192 ℃ to 147 ℃). In addition, the emissions of C x H y , CO, and SO 2 decreased by 55.4 %, 88.2 %, and 74.1 %, respectively, due to the trapping effect by molten NaOH-KOH. Afterwards, continuous operation was conducted, and the results showed that the total organic carbon of the treated WS reduced evidently by 75.9 %, indicating stable and satisfactory performance. This study is of significance for understanding the WS transformation during TCC, especially when the molten salt is involved. The effective suppression of gas emissions under controlled conditions and the stable performance during continuous operation demonstrate the potential of this process for large-scale applications in the future.

Zearalenone (ZEN) is an estrogenic mycotoxin that widely contaminates cereals and their products, developing efficient and targeted ZEN removal technologies in food matrices is of significant importance. In this study, a self-supporting three-dimensional Zein nanofibrous membrane was successfully prepared via electrospinning, and its adsorption performance and mechanism for ZEN were systematically evaluated. The results indicated that the material exhibits excellent adsorption performance and remarkable selectivity for ZEN. Under optimized conditions, the maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity for ZEN reached 0.48 mg/g Competitive adsorption experiments in a coexisting system containing ZEN, aflatoxin B 1 and patulin further confirmed its high selectivity for targeted detoxifying ZEN. Further continuous-flow experiments were designed to evaluate the ZEN removal performance of Zein nanofibrous membranes in a real beer matrix. The membranes maintained a detoxification rate of 90.48% for ZEN without significantly affecting the key quality parameters of the beer, demonstrating its promising application potential in complex food matrices. This study provides theoretical and technical support for the targeted detoxification of ZEN from food using Zein, and opens new avenues for the application of fully bio-based membranes in food contamination control.

A novel biocatalyst, Bp Lac@IPM, was constructed to enhance the remedi- ation of antibiotic wastewater. Compared with Bp Lac, Bp Lac@IPM showed better catalytic activity, stability, and reusability. Moreover, Bp Lac@IPM exhibited exceptional removal performance for quinolone antibiotics. Specifically, its ciprofloxacin removal efficiency reached 94.70%, which was 8.54% and 48.37% higher than that of Bp Lac and IPM, respectively. Furthermore, it effectively removed various quinolone antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, enrofloxacin, and moxifloxacin, with removal efficiencies ranging from 77.08% to 94.70%. Biotoxicity evaluation confirmed that Bp Lac@IPM treatment reduced the biotoxicity of ciprofloxacin. The biological toxicity of ciprofloxacin was 31% and 13% lower than that after IPM and Bp Lac treatment, respectively. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis identified the primary degradation pathways of ciprofloxacin as defluorination, decarboxylation, and cleavage of the piperazine ring. Further studies demonstrated a synergistic effect between adsorption and biocatalysis in Bp Lac@IPM, with a synergistic coefficient of 148.31% at 10 min. Mechanism analysis revealed that quinolone antibiotics were adsorbed onto Bp Lac@IPM via electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophilic interactions. Subsequently, the high concentration of quinolone antibiotics near Bp Lac@IPM promoted biocatalysis. This study provides a novel and efficient strategy for the removal and detoxification of quinolone antibiotics

Zearalenone (ZEA) frequently contaminates cereals and poses risks to human and animal health, highlighting the need for effective detoxification approaches. In this study, the biocontrol agents Clonostachys rosea , Gliocladium penicillioides , and G. catenulatum were shown to tolerate 50 μg/mL ZEA, while G. deliquescens and G. viride showed sensitivity to 10 μg/mL ZEA. The tolerant strains exhibited comprehensive degradation capacity against ZEA and its toxic derivatives (α/β-zearalanol and α/β-zearalenol), transforming 20 μg/mL ZEA within 48 h. Notably, C. rosea showed the highest degradation capacity, not only transforming ZEA faster but also degrading over 95.5 % of 50 μg/mL α/β-zearalanol and α-zearalenol, along with 36.2–54.4 % β-zearalenol within 72 h. Additionally, the mRNA levels of zhdr52 and zhdp83 were significantly upregulated during the biotransformation process, suggesting their involvement in this process. ZEA degradation products were identified as hydrolyzed ZEA (H-ZEA) and decarboxylated hydrolyzed ZEA ( D -ZEA) by LC-MS analysis. Importantly, the degradation products H-ZEA and D -ZEA showed markedly reduced cytotoxicity compared to ZEA, as evidenced by the absence of significant cytotoxic effects on normal human hepatocytes and renal cells in CCK-8 assays. This study clarifies the ZEA biodegradation mechanisms of C. rosea , G. penicillioides , and G. catenulatum , identifying three promising fungal candidates for ZEA biocontrol and advancing the development of ZEA detoxification strategies.

A starch-montmorillonite hydrochar composite (CWSH2@MMT) for PMS activation. • Field-scale validation of CWSH2@MMT/PMS for rapid quinclorac degradation. • Lleviation of QNC phytotoxicity in tobacco with >80% agronomic recovery and enhanced yield. • An integrated green remediation framework from material design to field application. Quinclorac (QNC) is an excellent rice herbicide with a soil half-life up to 540 d, causing persistent soil contamination and phytotoxicity in rotational crops such as tobacco. Although peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes can degrade QNC, existing non-hydrothermal carbon materials for PMS activation face limitations including high energy costs, metal leaching risks, and poor catalyst stability. Moreover, no previous study has provided a systematic framework, ranging from clay-mineral hydrochar composite design, and mechanistic elucidation to field validation, for the effective detoxification of QNC-contaminated soils. Here, we synthesized a s tarch-montmorillonite hydrochar composite (CWSH2@MMT), not previously reported for PMS activation, via hydrothermal carbonization. The system achieved 88.36% QNC removal from soil within 12 h. Quenching experiments, ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS) analysis combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed two degradation pathways of QNC driven by • OH, SO 4 •- , and O 2 •- radicals. Toxicity assessments by T.E.S.T. and ECOSAR program together with pot experiments confirmed that detected intermediates are less toxic than parent QNC. Critically, unlike lab-only studies, we conducted field trials in tobacco. The CWSH2@MMT/PMS system alleviated QNC-induced phytotoxicity, recovering leaf length, leaf width, and plant height by > 80% with improved yield and quality. This offers a green, efficient, and practical detoxification strategy for addressing soil pollution from herbicide residues. Despite the widely reported experimental anti-tumor effects, metformin's role remains exceedingly complex, with contradictory results in clinical trials. Our study, based on metabolomics analysis of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) samples, xenografts, and cells, unveils a novel process that metformin promotes the conversion of UDP-glucose (UDPG) to UDP-glucuronic acid (UDPGA) in glucuronic acid metabolism. Mechanistically, metformin activates UDP-glucose 6-dehydrogenase (UGDH) through AMPK-mediated phosphorylation of UGDH(S476), a previously unstudied phosphorylation site, impeding the binding of UDP-Xyl to UGDH and the subsequent allosteric inhibition. Consequently, metformin-treated cells are more reliant on UXS1, a downstream metabolic enzyme of UGDH, for detoxifying UDPGA based on the “kitchen-sink” model. Through comprehensive virtual screening of a compound library, we identified that plantainoside is a potent UXS1-targeting agent. Remarkably, when combined with metformin, plantainoside exhibits a superior synergistic lethal effect in LUAD cells, organoids, xenografts, and spontaneous models. Moreover, this combination not only directly targets tumor cells but also synergistically boosts CD8+ T cells and suppresses the differentiation of macrophages, thereby significantly enhancing immunotherapy efficacy. Collectively, our results shed light on metformin's complicated role by revealing its novel impact on glucuronic acid metabolism and dependence on UXS1; thus, targeting UXS1 combined with metformin represents a highly promising new strategy.
