Synthesis, characterization and infrared emissivity property of optically active polyurethane derived from tyrosine

Yong Yang,Yuming Zhou,Jianhua Ge,Yongjuan Wang,Xinglan Chen

Optically active polyurethanes (LPU and DPU) and racemic polyurethane (RPU) were synthesized by the self-polyaddition of the isocyanate-phenols which derived from the chiral and racemic tyrosine. All of the polymers were characterized by FT-IR, 1 H NMR, GPC , UV–Vis spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, TGA and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the infrared emissivity values were investigated in addition. LPU and DPU were two enantimorphs, they possessed helical configurations and higher degree of hydrogen bondings compared to the RPU which presented random coiled molecular chain . The crystallinity and thermal decomposition temperature of LPU and DPU were higher than that of the RPU due to the more regular secondary structure which facilitate the formation of a large number of inter-chain hydrogen bonds . Consequently, the LPU and DPU exhibited lower infrared emissivity values (8–14 μm), which came down to 0.611 and 0.625.

Improved infrared emissivity modulation of polyaniline based on various metal compound doping strategies

Yu Zhou,Jinxu Zhao,Xiansheng Li,Bin Zhao,Gang Pei,Jianming Zheng,Chunye Xu

Polyaniline (PANI) has the potential to control infrared emissivity but suffers from insufficient modulation. We mitigate this deficiency by employing metal compound doping to modify the structure and composition of PANI. The blackbody radiation-weighted emissivity modulation (Δε) in the 8–14 μm band increases from 0.055 without doping to 0.524 with manganese (Mn) doping. Thermal imaging confirms the remarkable infrared modulation of metal-doped PANI films. These results demonstrate the feasibility of using metal-doped PANI films for infrared thermal control applications and are expected to be used for innovations in smart thermal management.

SrTiO3 enhanced high thermal conductivity and emissivity PVDF composite films for radiative cooling

Yulong Qiao,Mengyang Wang,Hewei Ding,Jin Li,Junmei Zhang,Guiguang Qi,Xiongbo Yang,Xinyu Tan

When using high-power devices outdoors, especially in sunny summers, power losses coupled with direct sunlight can cause devices to overheat. This overheating not only disrupts their normal functioning but also increases the risk of fire accidents. To address this issue, the flexible polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/strontium titanate (SrTiO 3 , denoted as ST) composite films (abbreviated as P-S-x where x represents the mass ratio of PVDF to ST, x = 0.5, 1, 1.5, 1.75) were developed through a simple mixing method. Outdoor Radiant Cooling tests demonstrate that the P-S-1.75 sample exhibits an average cooling effect ∼14.2 °C compared with pure PVDF sample and an average cooling effect ∼20.2 °C compared with a bare Al sample. The P-S-1.75 sample with a thickness of 115 μm achieves exceptional performance in the broadband mid-infrared range from 2.5 to 25 μm with an average emissivity reaching about 97 %. And the max reflectance of P-S-1.75 sample reaches 90 % in the range of 0.5–2.0 μm. Furthermore, P-S-1.75 sample obtains a thermal conductivity ∼1.97 W/(m·K) which is about ten times higher than that of pure PVDF (0.2 W/(m·K)), and a cooling effect of 11.7 °C on the ceramic heating plate was obtained. The outstanding cooling performance exhibited by P-S-1.75 coating can be attributed to its exceptional radiative cooling capacity and high thermal conductivity. This work provides a new idea to obtain polymer/ceramic composite materials with excellent radiative cooling performance in cooling applications.

Rapid-response electrochromic devices with self-wrinkling polyaniline for enhanced infrared emissivity modulation

Yike Zhang,Dongqi Liu,Zichen Ren,Wenchao Liu,Bo Wang,Shanshan Song,Tingting Hao,Lei Xu,Haoyu Ji,Jiawu Sun,Leipeng Zhang,Yao Li

Electrochromic devices (ECDs) based on polyaniline (PANI) can alter their optical properties reversely by varying applied voltages, showing great potential in infrared (IR) information concealment. However, the traditional ECD with a flat PANI layer tends to perform unsatisfactorily in IR emissivity regulation and response time, resulting in risks of information leakage and low transfer efficiency. To address these challenges, a wrinkled microstructure is incorporated into the PANI layer (PANI-W) of the ECD (ECD-W) through a self-wrinkling method. Theoretic simulations combined with experimental results verify that the PANI-W endows an enhanced antireflection effect and a more complete redox degree. As a result, the ECD-W exhibits an exceptional IR emissivity modulation (0.375) and a short response time (1.8 s/2.6 s), allowing it to realize a temperature modulation of 8.9 °C. Moreover, various patterned and anti-patterned ECDs-W are feasibly prepared without masks, and more complicated patterns can be realized by erasing the unnecessary part of PANI-W on the ECDs-W. Two encryption/decryption strategies based on these ECDs-W are presented to provide more secure ways for IR information concealment. This research offers guidance to achieve high-performance ECDs with more effective spectrum regulation and faster responses, showing great potential in thermal regulation and IR information protection.

Multi-spectrum compatible electrochromic device combining microwave transmission with ultra-wide emissivity modulation

Hengzhi Zhang,Yulin Liu,Shengwei Tang,Xiaolong Weng,Yong Xiang,Chunyang Jia

The potential of polyaniline (PANI)-based electrochromic devices (ECDs) to offer adaptive anti-surveillance stealth in the visible/infrared bands is considerable. However, the incompatibility between infrared and radar stealth renders it challenging to achieve compatibility between the two with PANI-based ECDs. In this work, an etched electrode with frequency-selective surface configurations is initially designed for selective transmission and reflection of microwaves. Subsequently, a stellate PANI is prepared on the electrode surface by introducing triphenylamine (TPA) modification into the long molecular chain of disordered PANI, and assembled into a multi-spectrum compatible ECD. The results demonstrate that the ECD can achieve efficient transmission between 10.2–13.9 GHz, with a transmission rate approaching 90 % at 11.92 GHz, and enables the visible characteristics to switch between jungle dark green and desert earthy yellow. Furthermore, thermal-infrared emissivity ( ε ) modulation is achieved in the atmospheric transmission windows of 3–5 μm and 8–14 μm, with maximum emissivity change (Δ ε ) of 0.61 and 0.73, respectively. The ECD demonstrated the capacity to exceed the limitations of static camouflage associated with existing multi-spectrum stealth materials, and exhibited a high degree of adaptability in intelligent electromagnetic confrontation environments.

Multifunctional Ultrathin Metasurface with a Low Radar Cross Section and Variable Infrared Emissivity

Zekui Zhang,Leipeng Zhang,Zichen Ren,Yike Zhang,Tingting Hao,Dongqi Liu,Lei Xu,Wenchao Liu,Jiawu Sun,Haoyu Ji,Yuqiang Wang

The development of stealth devices that are compatible with both infrared (IR) and radar systems remains a significant challenge, as the material properties required for effective IR and radar stealth are often contradictory. In this work, based on an IR electrochromic device (IR-ECD), concepts of metamaterial manipulating electromagnetic waves are applied to develop a multifunctional ultrathin metasurface with a low radar cross section (RCS) and variable infrared emissivity. This paper presents a linear-to-linear polarization conversion metasurface (PCM) designed by hollowing the IR-ECD. In this way, the IR-ECD based on polyaniline (PANI) can also modulate the reflection waves in the microwave band without affecting its features in the infrared region. Thus, the proposed metasurface integrates both microwave stealth and variable infrared emissivity through a single layer. The measured results show that a 10 dB RCS reduction is achieved in the band of 8.46–9.5 GHz, and the infrared emissivity can be adjusted from 0.870 to 0.513 in the infrared stealth band of 8–14 μm. Due to the ultrathin thickness (only 0.081λ0 at 9 GHz), low RCS in the X-band, and variable infrared emissivity, the designed multifunctional stealth metasurface has promising applications on military platforms with various surrounding environments.

Impact of Ionic Liquids on Effectiveness of Tuning the Emissivity of Multilayer Graphene

Huang Huang,Junxiao Li,Haibo Ke,Yangjian Du,Wenlian Peng,Mengyan Dai,Yufeng Zhang,Xue-ao Zhang

Multilayer graphene has been employed as a functional material for tuning the emissivity in mid- and long-infrared range, which shows great potential for various applications, such as radiative cooling and thermal camouflage. However, the stability of the multilayer graphene is not sufficient for practical applications yet. Even though it is reported that the integrity of the multilayer graphene is compromised by ion intercalation, the detailed mechanism is rather unclear. Here, a set of ionic liquids is deployed as sources of electronic charges for tuning the emissivity of multilayer graphene. It is found that the emissivity modulator using 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ([EMIm]NTf2) as the ionic liquid provides a modulation depth of about 0.52 (i.e., about 21% larger than the best-reported value) while maintaining a reasonable device lifetime. The microscopic structures of the multilayer graphene in an operational and failure modulator are investigated by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction. The results indicate that the modulation depth of emissivity is negatively correlated with the initial voltage, which represents the reaction potential between the ionic liquid and graphene. Furthermore, not only the chemical reactivity but also the size of both anion and cation in the ionic liquids play important roles in maintaining stability of the modulator. Therefore, a set of criteria (e.g., low initial voltage and small size of anion and cation) is proposed to select proper ionic liquids for emissivity modulation. This not only sheds light on the underlying physics of the modulator but also promotes its practical applications.

Smart coating textiles for visible and infrared camouflage with photochromism and tunable emissivity

Jiru Jia,Ya Yang,Xiaotian Chen,Xingqiang Fang,Zhenglong Xu,Hanqi Li,Yanran Zhan,Jie Chen

The development of sophisticated multispectral detectors leads to the failure of camouflage technology limited to a specific spectrum, which pushes the exploration of multispectral camouflage materials. However, one of the great challenges in multispectral camouflage is to attain compatibility. This work reports the smart coating textile with tunable infrared radiation characteristics and the capability of stimuli-responsive isomerization, for visible and infrared camouflage. The molecular interactions and synergistic effects of designed polyurethane and chromogen within the composite coating, pave the way for the compatibility of infrared and visible dual camouflage. We demonstrate that the smart coating textile has a controllable infrared emissivity ranging from 0.77 to 0.94. Moreover, the coating textile exhibits adaptively color-changing behavior in response to environmental changes. These coating textiles are characterized by low cost, good durability, stable performance, as well as infrared and visible compatible camouflage. We expect this work may inspire and promote the development of multispectral compatible camouflage materials.

Snail shell-shaped chiral substituted helical polyacetylene: preparation, characterization and infrared emissivity performance

Wu Wenting,Zhou Yuming,Xu Ran,Hu Saichun,Wu Yangjin,He Qiang,He Man,Bu Xiaohai,Nan Qiuli,Yang Xiaoming

The first snail shell-shaped helical polyacetylenes (SHPAs) were synthesized from the copolymerization between l -serine-grafted propargylamine (LSA) and propargylamine (PA). The novel structure was obtained at the monomer input proportion of 50%. The monomer (LSA) and copolymers (poly(LSA m - co -PA n )) were characterized by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet visible spectroscopy, circular dichroism and transmission electron microscopy. The infrared emissivity of poly(LSA 50 - co -PA 50 ) investigated at 8–14 μm was 0.451, which was much lower than the other copolymers. This was because the poly(LSA 50 - co -PA 50 ) could form the obvious intramolecular interaction and self-assembled to a snail-shell shape by intermolecular hydrogen bonding in MeOH solution. Meanwhile, the conjugation performance of the main chain was enhanced. Consequently, the abundant hydrogen bonds formed through N–H and C=O bonding and the strong conjugate properties both could decrease the unsaturation degree, as well as change the heat conduction mode in the molecules, thereby reducing the infrared emissivity. This strategy provided a new direction to achieve the controllable infrared stealth.

Robust radiative cooling via surface phonon coupling-enhanced emissivity from SiO2 micropillar arrays

Zhenmin Ding,Xin Li,Hulin Zhang,Dukang Yan,Jérémy Werlé,Ying Song,Lorenzo Pattelli,Jiupeng Zhao,Hongbo Xu,Yao Li

Silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) is a prominent candidate for radiative cooling applications due to its low absorption in solar wavelengths (0.25–2.5 µm) and exceptional stability. However, its bulk phonon-polariton band results in a strong reflection peak in the atmospheric transparency window (8–13 μm), making it difficult to meet the requirements for sub-ambient passive radiative cooling. Herein, we demonstrate that SiO 2 micropillar arrays can effectively suppress infrared reflection at 8–13 μm and enhance the infrared emissivity by optimizing the micropillar array structure. We created a pattern with a height, spacing, and diameter of approximately 1.45 μm, 0.15 μm, and 0.35 μm, respectively, on top of a bulk SiO 2 substrate using reactive ion etching. The resulting surface phonon coupling of the micropillar array led to an increase in the thermal emissivity from 0.79 to 0.94. Outdoor tests show that the SiO 2 cooler with an optimized micropillar array can generate an average temperature drop of 5.5 °C throughout the daytime underneath an irradiance of 843.1 W m −2 at noon. Furthermore, the micropillar arrays endow the SiO 2 cooler with remarkable hydrophobic properties, attributed to the formation of F/C compounds introduced during the etching process. Finally, we also replicated the micropillar pattern onto the surface of industrial optical solar reflectors (OSRs), demonstrating similar emissivity and hydrophobicity enhancements. Our findings revealed an effective strategy for modifying the thermal management features of durable SiO 2 layers, which can be harnessed to cool OSRs and other similar sky-facing devices.

Novel ternary core-shell structure with microwave absorption properties and low infrared emissivity

Chunhao Wan,Rong Yan,Shansheng Yu,Xiaoyi Wang,Hongwei Tian

The development of functional materials with dual characteristics of microwave absorption and low infrared emissivity is vital for protection against magnetic-wave contamination. Currently, both microwave protection and infrared protection technologies are developing rapidly, but simultaneous integration of both has not been extensively investigated. Herein, a new ternary core-shell CoFe 2 O 4 @SiO 2 @ZAO composite dual-functional material was designed and fabricated. The process consisted of coating CoFe 2 O 4 microspheres with ZAO based on SiO 2 middle layer prepared through hydrolysis and sol-gel methods. The introduction of ZAO and SiO 2 was found conducive to dielectric loss and impedance matching, thereby improving wave absorption. The nano-flower ZAO coating provided low infrared emissivity with a lamellar structure and high carrier concentration in the resulting ternary structure. The rise in ZAO content first enhanced the wave absorption of CoFe 2 O 4 @SiO 2 @ZAO and then decreased while the infrared emissivity declined. Among prepared samples, CoFe 2 O 4 @SiO 2 @ZAO exhibited a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −59.31 dB at 10.96 GHz, conducive to effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4 GHz at 2 mm thickness with an infrared emissivity of 0.71 in 8–14 μm waveband. In sum, the novel CoFe 2 O 4 @SiO 2 @ZAO core-shell structure showed attractive properties in terms of compatibility of wave absorption and infrared emissivity, promising for future syntheses of dual-functional materials with improved performance.

All-Solid-State Transparent Variable Infrared Emissivity Devices for Multi-Mode Smart Windows

Hulin Zhang,Xiang Zhang,Wenhai Sun,Mingjun Chen,Yingjun Xiao,Zhenmin Ding,Dukang Yan,Jianbo Deng,Zitong Li,Jiupeng Zhao,Yao Li

Smart windows that incorporate photothermal modulators (PMs) can independently regulate solar transmittance and infrared (IR) emissivity to improve building comfort and reduce energy consumption. Herein, a novel all-solid-state variable IR emissivity device (VED) is first designed and fabricated with a high visible irradiation transmittance ( T ′ vis = 0.79) and solar irradiation transmittance ( T ′ sol = 0.75) using an ITO/SiO 2 /ITO Fabry–Perot cavity structure. The VED exhibits different IR emissivity (ɛ) values at positive (ɛ P = 0.80) and negative (ɛ N = 0.38) bias, allowing for dynamic regulation of radiation by controlling the electrical conductivity of the indium tin oxide (ITO) layer. Furthermore, an all-solid-state PM with a structure of ITO/SiO 2 /ITO/Glass/ITO/NiO/ZrO 2 /Li/WO 3 /ITO, which is capable of independently regulating solar transmittance (Δ T' sol = 0.31) and IR emissivity (Δɛ 2.5–25 µm = 0.42), is fabricated. The multi-mode smart window incorporating PMs can achieve “bright,” “dark,” “warm,” and “cool” modes, making them suitable for deployment in diverse climate zones. The innovative smart window holds a massive potential for use in reducing building energy consumption.
