Erythritol has many advantages such as high latent heat, good stability, non-toxicity and abundance, which are extremely potential in the field of medium-temperature thermal energy storage . However, the application of erythritol in thermal energy storage is greatly restricts by high supercooling. Herein, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC Na) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) are introduced to regulate the supercooling and thermal properties of erythritol. The crystal growth and nucleation process of erythritol is promoted effectively by CMC-Na and h-BN, as a result, the supercooling degree and solidification stability degree of erythritol is suppressed observably. According the results, while retaining the high latent heat of erythritol, the defect of supercooling of erythritol is effectively improved. The supercooling degree and solidification stability degree of erythritol are suppressed by 93% and 84%, respectively. Furthermore, the high latent heat, good thermal conductivity and excellent cycling thermal stability of erythritol composite phase change materials (ECPCM) are also available. This conclusion is important for supercooling regulation and thermal property optimization of erythritol, and indeed, can promote the utilization of erythritol in medium-temperature thermal energy storage.

We wished to improve the thermophysical properties and thermal stability of meso -erythritol (ET) for storage of thermal energy. Hence, capsules containing ET with polysiloxane (pSiO) shells were fabricated using ultraviolet-assisted in situ polymerization, and the effects of encapsulation and additives doping on the thermophysical properties of ET were studied. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that the heat-release performance of the composite (pSiO-C-A@ET) upon addition of 3.0 wt. % carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and 9.0 wt. % nano-α-Al 2 O 3 increased significantly from 64.1% to 89.0%, and the supercooling degree decreased dramatically from 89.5 °C to 17.0 °C, compared with that of pure ET. Spectroscopy (Fourier transform-infrared, x-ray diffraction) implied no change in the crystal structure of ET after encapsulation by pSiO shells. Addition of a nucleation agent (nano-α-Al 2 O 3 ) and thickening agent (CMC) had no effect on the crystal structure of pSiO-C-A@ET. The thermal conductivity of pSiO@ET and pSiO-C-A@ET capsules increased by 6.2% and 20.0% compared with that of pure ET (0.65 W/m·K) at 25 °C, respectively. The thermal conductivity was enhanced noticeably by doping with nano-α-Al 2 O 3 . Results from accelerated thermal cycling suggested that pSiO@ET and pSiO-C-A@ET capsules exhibited good thermal stability and thermal durability. These data suggest that composite phase-change materials could be employed for applications involving storage of thermal energy.

The main aim of this paper is to mitigate the supercooling and improve the heat release performance of erythritol (ET) as phase change material for thermal energy storage using the method of encapsulation and doping additives . The capsules containing ET, thickening and nucleating agent were prepared and various characterization techniques were employed to investigate the structure and thermo-physical properties of the composite, especially the supercooling inhibition and exothermicity improvement. Experimental results reveal that capsulation and adding thickening and nucleating agents have positive influence on the supercooling elimination, heat discharging ability improvement and thermal stability enhancement. The optimal capsules, with the maximal ET mass percentage of 59.2%, melt at 121.2 °C and freeze at 106.4 °C with the latent heat of 213.3 J/g and 206.9 J/g, respectively. Due to the improved crystallization kinetics , the degree of supercooling decreased by 83.6% as well as the heat release ratio increased by 52.2% compared to those of pristine ET. The as-prepared capsules have obvious core-shell structure, good compatibility between the shell and core materials. The thermal conductivity is 0.84 W/m K, increased by 29.2% than that of pristine ET. The results of accelerated thermal cycling test indicate that the supercooling, heat release ability and thermal reliability of encapsulated ET changed imperceptibly. In total, the technology of capsulation and adding thickening and nucleating agents can be used to suppress the supercooling and improve the thermal behavior of ET.

NaBH 4 was widely regarded as a low-cost hydrogen storage material due to its high-mass hydrogen capacity of approximately 10.8% (mass) and high volumetric hydrogen capacity of around 115 g·L –1 . However, it exhibits strong stability and requires temperatures above 500 °C for hydrogen release in practical applications. In this study, two polyhydric alcohols, xylitol and erythritol (XE), were prepared as a binary eutectic sugar alcohol through a grinding-melting method. This binary eutectic sugar alcohol was used as a proton-hydrogen carrier to destabilize NaBH 4 . The 19NaBH 4 -16XE composite material prepared by ball milling could start releasing hydrogen at 57.5 °C, and the total hydrogen release can reach over 88.8% (4.45% (mass)) of the theoretical capacity. When the 19NaBH 4 -16XE composite was pressed into solid blocks, the volumetric hydrogen capacity of the block-shaped composite could reach 67.2 g·L –1 . By controlling the temperature, the hydrogen desorption capacity of the NaBH 4 -XE composite material was controllable, which has great potential for achieving solid-state hydrogen production from NaBH 4 .

Phase change materials (PCMs) have demonstrated considerable promise in the realm of thermal storage applications in low-temperature environments. However, conventional PCMs encounter challenges in terms of heat exchange with the environment and are susceptible to spontaneous crystallization and exotherm, resulting in inadequate thermal storage stability. This study focuses on erythritol (ery), a low to medium temperature PCM with high latent heat and substantial supercooling capacity. A novel approach is proposed, utilizing the -OH groups within ery to form dynamic hydrogen bonds with the C O groups of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). This interaction aims to enhance ery's supercooling capacity and achieve long-term thermal storage in low-temperature environments. The introduction of PVP effectively inhibits the spontaneous crystallization of ery at low temperatures, while concurrently significantly enhancing its supercooling degree. This enhancement is achieved by increasing the viscosity and spatial potential resistance of the system, as well as by forming hydrogen bonds. The experimental findings demonstrate that the ery-pvp composites demonstrates remarkable long-term stability at temperatures as low as 0 °C. Over a period of 3 months during low-temperature thermal storage, no exothermic phenomenon was observed. Concurrently, there is evidence that adaptive thermally triggered cold crystallization in ery-pvp can be realized in those environments above 0 °C or triggered by human body temperature. This finding underscores the composite's exceptional stability and adaptive, controllable exothermic properties, positioning it as a promising long-term heat storage medium in low-temperature environments.

Erythritol-based nanocapsules with a phase-change temperature of 120 °C are successfully prepared under very mild conditions. The nanocapsules are produced via multiple crystallization precipitations from a saturated erythritol aqueous solution, followed by SiO 2 coating using a sol–gel method. Their nanostructure and elemental composition are characterized using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The latent heat of the nanocapsules is measured with a differential scanning calorimeter. The erythritol nanocapsules, with an average size of ≈220 nm, exhibit a melting enthalpy of 192.7 J g −1 . Notably, the supercooling degree of the nanocapsules is reduced by ≈30.0 °C compared to pure erythritol. After 200 thermal cycles, the heat storage performance of the nanocapsules shows only a 7.6% decrease. A latent heat functional thermal fluid, suitable for high-temperature heat transfer, is prepared by dispersing the nanocapsules in silicone oil. The thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity of this fluid increase by 20.5% and 283.3%, respectively, compared to pure silicone oil. These findings demonstrate that erythritol nanocapsules significantly enhance the thermal properties of high-temperature heat transfer fluids, highlighting their potential for high-temperature heat storage and transfer application.

Towards latent heat storage for days, or even extending to months in the context of solar energy utilization, the exploration of phase change materials (PCMs) with stable supercooling and the following crystallization triggering are carried out. The present work confirmed the persistent supercooling property of the xylitol/erythritol eutectic mixture. The coupled technique combining mechanical agitation with seeding was proposed to trigger crystallization, so as to facilitate the heat retrieval whenever heat is in demand. The xylitol/erythritol eutectic keeps supercooling state without crystallization at ambient temperature for at least 10 days, thus it can serve as applicable PCM for controllable heat retrieval. Such severe supercooling is mainly attributed to the particular molecular structure of polyalcohols and dramatic increase of dynamic viscosity . In particular, on the basis of secondary nucleation principle, the coupled technique combining mechanical agitation and seeding can be a preferable technique to efficiently trigger crystallization of the present eutectic PCM , so as to realize controllable heat retrieval. Such combined technique has main advantages of high efficiency and reproducible crystallization process . The agitation duration is shortened to 1.8 min with seeding, in comparison to a longer value of 43.3 min without seeding. Although the single technique of mechanical agitation can also trigger the crystallization, the agitation is found to be time-consuming and the triggered crystallization process is in poor consistency among parallel specimens. Furthermore, the crystallization initiating is greatly advanced with high agitation rate (300 r/min), and the agitation duration to sufficiently activate crystallization can be significantly shortened. The results suggest that appropriately high agitation rate favors the efficient heat retrieval. The obtained results are helpful to gain a better understanding on the supercooled PCMs based controllable heat retrieval.

Multifunctional microencapsulated phase change materials (MePCMs) with sugar alcohols as core and functional polymers as shell are of great importance for the applications of sugar alcohols as phase change materials (PCMs). However, the preparation of such kinds of MePCMs was restricted due to the water solubility and the high phase change temperature of sugar alcohols. Herein, we proposed a facial method and prepared a series of novel multifunctional sugar alcohols @ polyaniline (PANI) MePCMs with m-erythritol (ME) as core, PANI as shell, and exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (GNPs) as thermal conductive and photothermal conversion enhancement fillers. The prepared MePCMs were composed of GNPs@ME particles microencapsulated by PANI shell when the loading of GNPs was no more than 4 wt%. Otherwise, the GNPs@ME particles would be wrapped by excessive GNPs at first and then microencapsulated by the PANI shell. The prepared MePCMs exhibited good anti-leakage performance. The latent heat storage capacity of the prepared MePCMs could attain 254.3 J·g −1 . The thermal conductivity of the MePCMs with 8 wt% GNPs could be greatly enhanced to 196 % higher than that of the MePCMs without GNPs. Meanwhile, due to the synergetic nucleating effect of PANI and GNPs, the supercooling of ME in the MePCM was effectively suppressed from about 100 °C to about 56 °C with 2 wt% GNPs. The prepared MePCMs also exhibited excellent photothermal conversion performance. Consequently, the results reported here could pave the way for the preparation of sugar alcohol-based multifunctional MePCMs for solar thermal applications and latent heat storage systems.

Amphiphilic star-shaped copolymers based on star-shaped poly(L-lactide) (s-PLLA) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (s-PLLA-PEG) were synthesized with variable molecular weights (M w ) of PEG, and the relationship between the PEG block molecular weight of s-PLLA-PEG copolymers and their micelle properties were investigated. The structure and M w of s-PLLA-PEG were characterized with 1 H NMR, GPC, DSC, and XRD. The ibuprofen (IBU)-loaded s-PLLA-PEG micelles were prepared by dialysis method. The effects of PEG block molecular weight on the morphology, particle size, zeta potential, drug loading content (LC), drug encapsulation efficiency (EE), and in vitro drug release behavior of prepared micelles were investigated. Results indicated that the average diameters, LC, and EE of IBU-loaded s-PLLA-PEG micelles increased with increasing the M w of PEG in s-PLLA-PEG copolymers. The in vitro study showed that the IBU accumulative release can be depressed by increasing the M w of the s-PLLA-PEG, and the release profiles of IBU from s-PLLA-PEG followed the Baker-Lonsdale model equation. The results suggest that structural tailoring of PEG length from s-PLLA-PEG copolymers could provide a new strategy for designing drug carriers of high efficiency.

Modification of cellulose aerogels (CAs) with silica can obtain novel renewable and biodegradable aerogels as promising supporting materials for form-stable phase change materials (fs-PCMs). Herein, silica-decorated CAs (SCAs) and erythritol (ET) crystal seeds incorporated SCAs (ESCAs) were prepared, and the ESCAs were further pyrolyzed to prepare carbonized SCAs (CSCAs). The prepared aerogels were then adsorbed with ET to obtain fs-PCMs. The SCAs and ESCAs possessed hierarchical pores and high specific surface areas, which were in favor of their adsorption of ET, and the doping of silica was beneficial for suppressing the supercooling of the fs-PCMs. Moreover, The ET crystal seeds in the ESCAs could further improve the latent heat storage property and effectively suppress the supercooling of the fs-PCMs. The highest melting enthalpy (Δ H m ) of ESCA-ET fs-PCMs could attain 288.1 J/g, corresponding to an ET loading of 91.4 %. On the other hand, the CSCAs were composed of amorphous carbon and silica. The amorphous carbon and the porous structure of the CSCAs endowed the obtained fs-PCMs a Δ H m of 254.3 J/g, corresponding to an ET loading of 80.6 %, with a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 68.8 % and a greatly suppressed supercooling of 21.7 °C.

The application of erythritol to medium-temperature latent heat energy storage systems is limited by its low thermal conductivity and large supercooling. Three types of graphite foams (GFs) with different thermal conductivities were used as the porous skeleton for encapsulating erythritol via vacuum impregnation, and the erythritol/GF composites were investigated using different methods to solve the aforementioned problems. The GF pores were effectively filled with erythritol via vacuum impregnation, and the filling rate of erythritol reached more than 90%. The thermal conductivity of the erythritol/GF composites was 73.80, 35.05, and 13.30 W/m·K. The thermal conductivity of the erythritol/GFs was improved by 26–158 times over that of pure erythritol. The subcooling degree of the erythritol/GF composites was reduced from 64.1 °C to 59.4 °C, facilitating the release of latent heat. The erythritol/GF composites had remarkably boosted thermal stability compared with that of pure erythritol. The developed erythritol/GF phase-change composite material exhibits excellent heat transfer and storage properties, and it has broad prospects in the field of phase-change heat storage at intermediate temperatures.

Erythritol (ER) exhibits competitive advantages for medium-low temperature thermal energy storage due to its high melting enthalpy (340–360 J/g), low cost, and appropriate phase transition temperature. Compounding with high thermal conductivity carbon materials is effective in overcoming the low thermal conductivity of the phase change materials (PCMs). This study aims to enhance the thermal conductivity and encapsulation performance of PCMs by improving the compatibility between expanded graphite (EG) and ER. The results demonstrate that hydrogen peroxide oxidation introduces oxygen-containing functional groups on EG surfaces, enhancing the affinity between hydrophilic EG (HEG), and ER. The thermal conductivity of the HEG-ER composites PCMs containing 1–5 wt % HEG reached 2.584–5.824 W/m·K, showing a 4.998% improvement at least compared to the EG-ER composites at equivalent EG loadings. After heating for 60 min, the leakage rates for HEG-ER composite PCMs containing 1–5 wt % HEG were 4.719%–0.802%, compared with the EG-ER composite PCMs with the same quality fraction of EG, the maximum reduction is 54.393%. The melting enthalpy of HEG-ER remained above 320 J/g, exhibiting excellent stability after 100 thermal cycles. This study provides a theoretical guidance for the development of sugar alcohol-based PCMs with high thermal conductivity and encapsulation performance.
