A key biomass-derived platform molecule, furfural (FF), offers immense potential for synthesizing valuable chemicals like furfuryl alcohol (FAL) through catalytic hydrogenation. Copper-based catalysts stand out for this conversion owing to their adjustable active sites, economic viability, and decent stability. Nevertheless, conventional Cu electrodes exhibit limited performance, and the atomic-scale catalytic mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we developed a series of oxide-derived copper (OD-Cu) catalysts with precisely controlled Cu(100) to Cu(111) facet ratios for the electrochemical hydrogenation of furfural. Remarkably, the cube-shaped OD-Cu catalyst, dominated by Cu(100) facets, delivered an exceptional FAL selectivity of 97.7%, far exceeding the 61.1% selectivity achieved by its octahedron-shaped counterpart with predominant Cu(111) facets. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided atomic-level insights, revealing that the Cu(100) surface induces greater elongation of the aldehyde C═O bond in adsorbed FF compared to Cu(111), indicating superior activation of this critical functional group. Additionally, the calculations demonstrated stronger furfural adsorption on Cu(100) than on Cu(111). These combined effects synergistically enhance catalytic performance.

Electrochemically driven carbon–carbon coupling utilizing renewable electricity under ambient conditions has emerged as an innovative approach for synthesizing high-value chemicals, which still faces inherent challenges such as low conversion rates and poor selectivity. While electroreducing furfural to hydrofuroin can produce high-quality biofuel, its efficiency need to be promoted. Herein, Cu–Sn bimetallic catalyst has been developed with a conversion rate of furfural of >97% and hydrofuroin selectivity of >67% through equilibrium of the interfacial intermediate *H and *fur-CHOH, which exhibits the greatest state-of-the-art overall performance. Characterization and theoretical calculation reveal that Cu serves as the active site for generating *fur-CHOH, whose electron density can be decreased by introducing Sn, and results in a higher *fur-CHOH coverage and a lower energy barrier of dimerization. Moreover, adding Sn also enables sluggish *H formation to balance interfacial *fur-CHOH and *H, leading to reduced hydrogenation byproducts. The as-developed approach provides valuable insights for optimizing other C–C electrocoupling reactions for the synthesis of high-value chemicals.

Graphical This study investigated the reactivity of nickel phosphide, copper phosphide, and cobalt phosphide catalysts in the hydrodeoxygenation of furfural to 2-methylfuran. Appropriate acidic and adsorbent configurations were employed to facilitate the production of 2-methylfuran. Among the catalysts tested, the copper phosphide catalyst exhibited the highest selectivity for 2-methylfuran. A series of transition metal (Ni, Cu, and Co) phosphides were prepared by temperature programmed reduction method. The effect of the metal species and the initial P/Cu molar ratios on the catalytic activity of furfural hydrodeoxygenation was investigated, and the reaction conditions were optimized. Complete conversion of furfural was achieved under conditions of 220 °C and 15 bar for 4 h over Ni 2 P, CoP, or Cu 3 P catalysts. Notably, a selectivity of 95% of 2-methylfuran was attained when the Cu 3 P-3 was employed as a catalyst. The experimental results showed that a suitable P/Cu molar ratio could promote the conversion of the intermediate furfuryl alcohol to 2-methylfuran while avoiding the generation of overhydrogenation products. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the Cu 3 P-3 catalyst could be used for four times with only a slight decrease in catalytic performance.

The continuous production of furfural using vaporization reactor as a continuous stirred tank reactor is reported in this study. 50 g L −1 xylose solution was continuous fed into the reactor and catalyzed by 2 wt% H 2 SO 4 at 433 K gave 82.3% average yield of furfural in 10 h of reaction time. Pulp prehydrolysate derives from prehydrolysis of wood biomass was further used as the raw material for the reaction, and the 78.6% average yield of furfural was achieved for 10 h. According to Aspen Plus simulation, 11.7 tons of saturated steam was required for the production of one ton of furfural under the present reaction system, which is almost half of the traditional one-step method.

The oxidation of furfural in H 2 O 2 and H 2 O 2 –Mg(OH) 2 system were systematically investigated and a rational explanation for the reaction mechanism was proposed. 2-formyloxyfuran, from selective oxidation of HC O group in furfural, was a crucial intermediate. The addition of Mg(OH) 2 suppressed the oxidation of furan ring of furfural and enhanced selectivities of 2(5H)-furanone (44.8%) and succinic acid (38.0%). FT-IR, Gaussian calculation and experimental results indicated that the process of furfural oxidation with H 2 O 2 is homogeneous, and the synergy between dissolved Mg 2 + cations and OH − ions facilitates the HOO − attacking the carbon atom of HC O other than the C C bound of furan ring.

Transfer-hydrogenation (TH) has attracted great attention because it does not require the use of high pressure H 2 . In this work, we report a facile ultrasound-assisted impregnation method with the aid of carbothermal reduction property of activated carbon (AC) to synthesize AC supported copper catalyst (Cu/AC) for efficient TH of bio-derived unsaturated oxygenated compounds such as furfural (FAL) and levulinic acid (LA). In the presence of 2-propanol as the hydrogen donor, within 5 h under 200 °C, the resultant Cu/AC catalyst can convert FAL into 2-methylfuran (2-MF, a high-value fuel additive) with a superior selectivity of 91.6%. The Cu/AC catalyst can also covert LA into γ-valerolactone (GVL) with a high selectivity of 89.9% under 220 °C for 5 h. The superior TH catalytic performance of the Cu/AC catalyst could be attributed to the uniform size and well dispersed Cu nanoparticles supported on the high surface area AC with the suitable proportion of Cu 2+ , Cu 0 and Cu + . Cycling test results confirm the reusability of the Cu/AC catalyst. Additionally, the reported Cu/AC catalyst is cheap and massive producible, advantageous for large-scale conversion of bio-derived platforms to value-added chemicals and bio-fuels.

In this study we report a new reaction pathway in which the hydroxyl and the aldehyde groups of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural were aminated respectively. Hydroxyl group was aminated via Ritter reaction followed by direct reductive amination of aldehyde group. For the Ritter reaction of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural, mixture of trifluoromethane sulfonic acid and phosphoric anhydride showed good performance and the intermediate N -acyl-5-aminomethyl furfural with the highest yield of 89.1 wt% was obtained. Optimization of direct reductive amination of 2,5-bis(aminomethyl) furan was conducted and a yield of 45.7 wt% was achieved. This study presents a simple way for preparing bis(amino)furans from renewable biomass based 5-hydroxymethyl furfural, which enriches the biorefinery concept from biomass.

Furfural is a valuable chemical, the production of furfural from renewable biomass resources becomes more attractive in recent years. In this study, biomass fast pyrolysis with heterogeneous catalysts (titanium compounds (TiN, TiO 2 and TiOSO 4 ) and metal nitrides (MoN, GaN and VN)) for furfural production was investigated experimentally by means of pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass-spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The measurement results indicated that TiN and GaN promoted the furfural compounds production notably mainly through direct decomposition of oligosaccharides. The formation of furfural was promoted when the amount of TiN was increased, and the yield of furfural formed was about 5.5 times the size of that from non-catalytic pyrolysis when TiN/cellulose mass ratio was 4. The furfural yield decreased when the pyrolysis residence time increased from 10 to 30 s, which suggests competitive reactions (formation of 1, 6-anhydro-beta.- d -glucopyranose) against the formation of furfural. TiN, as a catalyst for fast pyrolysis towards furfural production, can be well applied to agriculture biomass residues. Comparing three biomass residues: corncob, wheat straw and cotton stalk, corncob showed higher furfural yield due to the higher holocellulose content, while wheat straw showed higher furfural selectivity.

Abstract The efficient production of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) from carbohydrates is achieved in the presence of polyaniline-based solid catalysts. The composite polyaniline–graphite oxide (PANI–GO) is prepared from in situ polymerization of aniline in the solution of colloidal GO which was obtained from oxidation of graphite with Hummers’ method. Moreover, the SO

/PANI–GO materials were synthesized from the sulfation of PANI and PANI–GO by a 70 % sulfuric acid solution. All obtained samples are respectively characterized with XRD, TG, FTIR, SEM and TEM techniques to reveal the physical properties and structures of these materials. When these materials were used in the dehydration of d -fructose, it was found that the PANI–GO and SO
2− 4
/PANI–GO as the catalyst exhibited prominent activities in which 80.7 and 72.4 % yields of HMF were obtained in N -methylpyrrolidone solvent at 160 °C for 4 h. In addition, the effects of reaction temperature, time, solvents and the recycling of PANI–GO material were also investigated. The material provides a promising method for the catalytic conversion of other biomass feedstocks. Graphical Abstract
Metal-free and efficient conversion of different carbohydrates to 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) with a novel PANI–GO catalyst has been successfully performed.

Supported Ni (60 wt% Ni) catalysts were prepared and phosphided into corresponding Ni 2 P catalysts. They were used for the hydrogenation of furfural as well as for the probe reactions (the hydrogenation of furan and propanal). The results demonstrated that the acidic support promoted the adsorption and hydrogenation of furan ring and aldehyde group over the nickel sites while the basic support played the opposite role. The IR spectra demonstrated that the aldehyde group was more easily hydrogenated than the furan ring at room temperature, implying the sequential hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol (FA) and then to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA) over Ni. The microcalorimetric studies revealed that both the aldehyde group and furan ring were strongly adsorbed on Ni so that the Ni catalysts were highly active to hydrogenate the two groups, i.e., the Ni catalysts favored the formation of THFA. On the other side, although the adsorption heats of aldehyde group were much lower on Ni 2 P than on Ni, the adsorption heats were significantly higher for aldehyde group than for furan ring on Ni 2 P, implying the high selectivity to FA on Ni 2 P.

Graphical Zr oxo cluster bifunctional catalyst : The Zr oxo cluster [Zr 6 O 4 (OH) 4 (HSCH 2 CH 2 COO) 12 ] 2 has been developed, and then the molecular catalyst with Lewis acid and Brönsted acid sites were attained by the oxidation of the sulfhydryl group of the Zr oxo cluster with H 2 O 2 . The resulting bifunctional catalyst showed a superior catalytic activity for alcoholysis of furfural to alkyl levulinates. A novel dodecanuclear Zr oxo cluster [Zr 6 O 4 (OH) 4 (HSCH 2 CH 2 COO) 12 ] 2 (ZrO-SH-10) has been constructed under the room temperature, followed by oxidation of the sulfhydryl group with H 2 O 2 to achieve a bifunctional catalyst with Lewis acid and Brönsted acid sites. The characterization of catalysts indicated that {Zr 6 O 4 } cluster core can be stabilized with a shell of carboxylate ligands, and the resulting ZrO-SO 3 H was formed as a discrete molecular catalyst, exhibiting superior activity and recyclability for the cascade conversion of furfural to alkyl levulinate by the integration of transfer hydrogenation and alcoholysis in n-butanol. The yield of n-butyl levulinate can achieve as high as 91 % under the optimum conditions. Meanwhile, no leaching of the active species was found, which confirmed the structure of the Zr oxo cluster was air and moisture-stable. On the basis of the studies on the reaction kinetics and isotope tracking, the reaction mechanism was proposed accordingly.

A novel strategy for preparing 1,13-tridecanediol by valorization of furfural was proposed, involving aldol condensation to build C13 intermediates and further hydrodeoxygenation. During this process, Raney Ni exhibited excellent catalytic performance for the initial hydrogenation (C═C and C═O) with a yield of 98.30%, while Pd/TiO2–ZrO2 showed promising de–OH and ring opening performance. Results showed that ZrO2 was necessary for de–OH and ring opening, and the catalytic performance could be improved by incorporating with TiO2 to form TiO2–ZrO2 due to the increase in weak acid sites. Also, the introduction of Pd could further promote the reaction oriented toward obtaining 1,13-tridecanediol. After optimization, 1,13-tridecanediol yield could be straightforwardly up to 57.93% in water, and it would improve to 76.51% (69.64% based on furfural) by introducing trace amounts of methanol, and even the reaction parameters (time, pressure, temperature, etc.) contributed to the distribution of products. Additionally, mechanistic investigation revealed that there were multiple simultaneous or sequential reaction steps in the hydrodeoxygenation reaction, and the superior catalytic performance of Pd/TiO2–ZrO2 for oriented upgrading of furfural into 1,13-tridecanediol could be attributed to the synergistic effect of TiO2–ZrO2 and Pd. Overall, this work may provide some insights for the utilization of biomass resources in the future.
