The production of hydrogen through photocatalytic technology has become a very attractive way to alleviate the problem of environmental pollution. In this work, A ZnIn 2 S 4 Co 3 O 4 -(SiC@g-C 3 N 5 ) triple heterojunctions structure was constructed. In this structure, a P-N heterojunction is formed by Co 3 O 4 with ZIS, a Z-type heterojunction is constructed by ZIS with CN5, and a II-type heterojunction is formed by CN5 with SiC. The three are synergistically used to optimize the carrier migration path. Under this synergistic mechanism, Co 3 O 4 increases the concentration of photogenerated electrons in the ZIS conduction band. It allows the photogenerated electrons to participate in the H⁺ reduction hydrogen generation reaction. Meanwhile, SiC facilitates further electron enrichment in the CN5 conduction band via the type - II heterojunction.SiC also boosts carrier migration efficiency through the Z - type pathway. In the ZnIn 2 S 4 - Co 3 O 4 -(SiC@g - C 3 N 5 ) system, the consumption rate of useless photogenerated electron - hole pairs per unit time is much higher than that in the ZIS - CN5 system with only one Z - type heterojunction. The number of photogenerated electrons on ZIS in the ZnIn 2 S 4 - Co 3 O 4 -(SiC@g - C 3 N 5 ) system is much higher than that in the ZIS - CN5 system. This greatly reduces the probability of the system's photogenerated carrier complexation. It also increases the charge separation efficiency. As a result, the photocatalytic efficiency is significantly improved. 20ZIS-Co-(SiC@CN5) composites exhibited efficient hydrogen production (13655μmol·g -1 -h -1 ) in hydrogen production experiments. The ZIS - Co - (SiC@CN5) composites enable efficient separation and directional migration of photogenerated carriers via the collaborative action of the multilevel heterojunction. This action offers a scalable concept for designing highly efficient and stable photocatalysts for hydrogen production.

g-C 3 N 5 /BiVO 4 - x heterojunctions with tunable BiVO 4 facet ratios were fabricated. • g-C 3 N 5 /BiVO 4 -F shows best activity via suitable (121)/(040) and (040)/(011) ratios. • H 2 O 2 addition boosts photocatalytic degradation efficiency of ceftriaxone sodium. • In-situ XPS confirms the S-scheme charge transfer in g-C 3 N 5 /BiVO 4 -F heterojunction. S-scheme heterojunctions have garnered significant attention in the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics due to the efficient charge separation and strong redox capability preservation. However, photocatalytic activity is highly dependent on the exposed crystal facet ratios of the catalyst. A series of g-C 3 N 5 /BiVO 4 (N-CN/BiVO 4 -x) S-scheme heterojunctions were fabricated by tuning the morphology of BiVO 4 into peanut-like (BiVO 4 -P), flake-like (BiVO 4 -F), and decahedral structures (BiVO 4 -B), thereby controlling the ratios of exposed crystal facets. Degradation performance tests revealed the optimal performance of N-CN/BiVO 4 -F. This heterojunction achieved a degradation rate of 71.1% for ceftriaxone sodium (CS). With the introduction of H 2 O 2 , the degradation rate further increased to 85.1%. The results confirmed that the superior performance of N-CN/BiVO 4 -F is closely related to the specific exposure ratios of its (121)/(040) and (040)/(011) crystal facets. Furthermore, in-situ XPS confirmed that the charge transfer follows S-scheme charge transfer mechanism. Photoelectrochemical measurements and radical trapping experiments revealed a possible CS degradation mechanism. This work elucidates how the exposed facets of BiVO 4 regulate the photocatalytic performance of S-scheme heterojunctions. The findings provide a theoretical and practical basis for designing efficient photocatalysis systems. Download: Download high-res image (92KB) Download: Download full-size image

In this work, a novel flower-shaped NV-g-C3N5@VS2 heterojunction was prepared by hydrothermal in situ synthesis using NV-g-C3N5 as the matrix and thioacetamide as the precursor. The prepared heterojunction showed a flower-like and layered structure, which widened the visible light absorption range and facilitated the usage of visible light. Under visible light irradiation, the NV-g-C3N5@VS2 heterojunction exhibited excellent photoelectrocatalytic nitrogen reduction activity with an ammonia yield of 49.26 μg h−1 mg−1 in an electrolyte solution saturated with N2. Moreover, the NV-g-C3N5@VS2 heterojunction achieved outstanding photocatalytic degradation activity. The photocatalytic degradation rate of Rhodamine (RhB) reached 95% in 35 min under visible light irradiation. More importantly, the catalyst displayed good reusability and stability after four cycling runs for the photodegradation of MB. The prepared catalyst showed excellent photocatalytic universality and was also applied to efficiently degrade organic pollutants such as methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB). Therefore, solar light-driven photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic applications based on the NV-g-C3N5@VS2 heterojunction are expected to pave a new way for fertilizers, energy utilization, and environmental remediation.

Graphical Under visible light, a Z-type heterojunction is formed between Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 5 to enhance charge separation. Electrons and holes directly or indirectly react with PMS to generate free radicals such as · ,·OH, and 1 O 2 to degrade tetracycline. Photocatalysis-assisted peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is a promising technology for the degradation of antibiotics in water remediation. Herein, MXene-derived oxide (TiO 2 ) and g-C 3 N 5 Z-scheme ternary heterojunction photocatalytic composite materials are synthesized using an electrostatic self-assembly approach and characterized. The optimized g-C 3 N 5 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 (CNTT) heterostructure demonstrates exceptional photocatalytic activity for tetracycline (TC) removal, achieving 90% degradation within 60 min at an optimal g-C 3 N 5 :TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 mass ratio of 3:2. Remarkably, the system exhibits broad pH adaptability (80.8–96.3% TC removal across pH 2–12), overcoming the pH sensitivity limitations of traditional PMS-based processes. Mechanistic investigations reveal a synergistic photocatalysis-PMS activation pathway, with quenching experiments confirming , ·OH, · , and 1 O 2 , as dominant reactive species. The CNTT composite maintains 65.2% degradation efficiency after five cycles, demonstrating robust stability. Coexisting ions negatively influence TC removal in the order: H 2 PO 4 − > > Cl − > > . This work establishes the CNTT heterostructure as a promising, environmentally tolerant candidate for efficient pharmaceutical pollutant remediation in complex aqueous matrices.

To solve the pollution of natural water bodies by organic dyes and the exceeding of indoor HCHO standards caused by renovation, the study realized the band gap modulation of g-C3N5, a novel semiconductor photocatalytic material, by using H3BO3 as a source of nonmetallic B. The prepared B/g-C3N5 has shown excellent photocatalytic performance and stability for organic dye degradation in water bodies and indoor HCHO removal. The degradation rate of methylene blue (MB) reached 95% in 60 min of visible light, and the removal rate of HCHO reached 96.3% in 180 min of visible light. The MB and HCHO were efficiently degraded to small molecule inorganic compounds such as CO2 and H2O under the oxidation of active groups such as ·O2− and h+. The doping of nonmetallic B realizes the efficient separation of e−-h+ of g-C3N5, improve the absorption performance of visible light, and broaden the spectral range significantly. The modulation of the g-C3N5 band gap provides a potential application scenario for the development of novel photocatalytic materials.

In this study, Lanthanum ions (La 3 + )-doped BiOBr/g-C 3 N 5 (La 3+ @BiOBr/g-C 3 N 5 ) Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal method. The composite structure was thoroughly characterized by XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM, TEM, UV-Vis DRS, PL, and EIS analyses, confirming the successful incorporation of La 3+ into the BiOBr lattice and the effective integration of g-C 3 N 5 . The optimal composite with 5 wt% g-C 3 N 5 demonstrated superior photocatalytic performance in degrading tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), achieving a removal efficiency of 95.9% within 180 min under visible light irradiation. The enhanced activity is attributed to the synergistic effects of increased specific surface area, improved visible light absorption, and more efficient photogenerated charge separation, as facilitated by La 3+ doping and Z-scheme charge transfer pathways. Scavenger experiments and Mott-Schottky analysis indicated that superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ) and photogenerated holes (h + ) are the main reactive species responsible for pollutant degradation. Furthermore, the composite exhibited excellent stability and reusability, maintaining over 87% degradation efficiency after five consecutive cycles with minimal structural change. This work provides a promising strategy for the design of high-efficiency rare-earth-modified photocatalysts for antibiotic pollutant removal in wastewater treatment applications.

With increasing attention to fossil fuel consumption and environmental pollution, the development of clean and sustainable biofuels has become increasingly urgent. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising technology for converting biomass into bio-oil, but traditional HTL processes face challenges such as low conversion efficiency and high energy consumption. To address these issues, this study synthesized a series of B/CN heterogeneous photocatalysts with different BiOCl (BOC) and g-C 3 N 5 molar ratios by solvothermal method and applied them to the photothermal synergistic catalytic liquefaction of cellulose in methanol. Methanol can be recycled and reused. It has been proven that BOC formed a heterojunction with g-C 3 N 5 , extending the photo responsive range of the photocatalyst to the visible light region, promoting the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers, and optimizing the dispersion of active components. The effect of photocatalyst on the chemical composition and thermal stability of bio-oil was studied. The B/CN-1:2 photocatalyst achieved optimal performance, with a maximum yield of 61.23 • wt% for bio-oil, an higher heating value of 21.39 MJ/kg, and an energy conversion efficiency of 77.41%. Bio-oil is mainly composed of high-value compounds such as alcohols, esters, and ethers, with reduced heavy components and improved thermal stability. Mechanistic studies have shown that the photothermal synergistic effect of B/CN catalysts promotes the cleavage of cellulose glycosidic bonds by generating reactive free radicals through the photodegradation of methanol. This work provides a feasible strategy for improving the efficiency and quality of biomass HTL by designing high-performance photothermal catalysts and offers new insights for the sustainable production of biofuels. Graphical A BiOCl-g-C 3 N 5 heterojunction photocatalyst has been developed and used for the study of photothermal catalysis of cellulose liquefaction to prepare bio-oil. At the optimal ratio, the yield of bio-oil reached 61.23%, with higher heating value of 21.39 MJ/kg, while the thermal stability and component release were well optimized.

Constructing a dual-functional photoredox system coupling fine-chemical synthesis with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production provides an intriguing and eco-friendly protocol for advancing sustainable practical applications. Herein, we present a facile one-pot strategy for fabricating a porous N-rich g-C 3 N 4 /g-C 3 N 5 heterojunction (denoted as pN-N 4 -N 5 ) using mixed melamine and 3-amino-1,2,4-triazine as the precursors with NH 4 Cl as a penetrant for in-situ structure engineering. The resultant metal-free pN-N 4 -N 5 exhibited a remarkable performance of H 2 O 2 generation rate of 2.71 mmol g −1 h −1 with simultaneous production of industrially important 2-phenylbenzimidazole (2-BZ) under visible light and open air, along with a yield of 97 % and selectivity of > 99 %, outperforming most of the reported carbon nitride-based reaction systems for single-functional H 2 O 2 or 2-BZ synthesis. Extensive characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) studies revealed that such a heterojunction with well-matched band structure, enlarged interlayer space and enriched amino groups on the catalyst surface enables the facilitated spatially oriented charge flow, efficient mass transfer and reactants activation, thus offering an efficient and sustainable platform to furnishing the three-in-one photoredox systems to produce bidirectional valuable products.

Atomically thin, two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors offer unprecedented opportunities for high-performance gas sensing, while the limited surface accessibility of their bulk counterparts severely restricts their practical applications. Herein, ultrathin graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 5 ) nanosheets with an average thickness of ∼1.7 nm were successfully synthesized via a facile and scalable sulfuric acid-assisted intercalation–exfoliation strategy using bulk g-C 3 N 5 derived from the thermal polymerization of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole. The exfoliation process effectively tailors the electronic structure and maximizes the exposure of nitrogen-rich active sites, enabling enhanced surface adsorption and accelerated charge transfer. As a result, the as-prepared g-C 3 N 5 nanosheets exhibit outstanding room-temperature ammonia (NH 3 ) sensing performance, delivering a high sensitivity of 22.27 ppm –1 , a low detection limit of 27 ppb, and excellent selectivity under complex gas environments. Notably, the integration of g-C 3 N 5 nanosheets onto a flexible porous substrate further enables robust mechanical stability and efficient gas diffusion, supporting reliable operation under bending and long-term use. More importantly, the sensor demonstrates the capability to discriminate pulmonary infection patients from healthy individuals through exhaled breath analysis, highlighting its potential for non-invasive clinical diagnostics. This work not only provides an effective strategy for constructing high-performance carbon nitride-based gas sensors but also offers a promising platform for wearable healthcare monitoring and early disease detection.

Ultrathin g-C 3 N 5 with Na-K sites, N-vacancies, and –C N was synthesized. • CN-Na-K yields 4739.89 μmol‧g −1 ‧h −1 H 2 O 2 under aeration-free conditions. • –C N and N-vacancies synergistically boost π-electron delocalization. • Na-K dual sites drive both ORR and WOR pathways for H 2 O 2 production. Photocatalytic solar-driven H 2 O 2 synthesis offers a sustainable energy route but is often limited by the need for supplemental oxygen. To overcome barriers, a distinctive ultra-thin g-C 3 N 5 nanosheet with cyano groups (–C N), N-vacancies, and Na-K dual active sites (CN-Na-K) was structured for H 2 O 2 production in natural-oxygen-conditions (aeration-free). The introduction of the –C N function as an electron pump to construct an internal electric field (IEF) promoted charge separation. Simultaneously, N-vacancies broke the structural localization to enhance π-electron delocalization, creating high-speed channels for carrier transport. Crucially, the Na-K dual sites acted as catalytic centers that enabled the water oxidation reaction (WOR) by driving the formation of key intermediates (*O 2 , *OOH, and *OH), where Na + acted as a powerful electron sink, and K + promoted excited-state electrons and stabilized holes. Therefore, the –C N, N-vacancies, and Na-K dual active sites synergistically promoted an enhanced H 2 O 2 production rate of CN-Na-K (1260.03 μmol‧g −1 ‧h −1 in LED lamp and 4739.89 μmol‧g −1 ‧h −1 in Xe lamp) under aeration-free conditions. Besides, characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed the CN-Na-K system produced H 2 O 2 via a dual-channel pathway for the oxygen reduction (ORR) and WOR. This work provides a systemic design for electronic delocalization and dual active site engineering to achieve efficient aeration-free H 2 O 2 production. Ammonia (NH 3 ) in exhaled breath is a promising biomarker for non-invasive monitoring of metabolic disorders, but achieving selective and sensitive detection under complex breath environments remains challenging. Here, we report a bioinspired g-C 3 N 5 @Zn-TCPP heterojunction formed through π-π stacking that enables molecular-recognition-driven breath NH 3 sensing. Inspired by the synergistic functions of ammonium transporter (AmtB) and ammonia monooxygenase (AMO), this heterostructure integrates pore-confined molecular enrichment with interfacial electric-field regulation. The intrinsic aperture of Zn-TCPP (∼2.8 Å), closely matching the kinetic diameter of NH 3 (2.6 Å), enables size-selective molecular sieving, while the g-C 3 N 5 -induced interfacial electric field modulates the electronic environment of Zn 2+ active sites and strengthens Lewis acid-base interactions with NH 3 molecules. Benefiting from this synergistic molecular recognition mechanism, the optimized 0.08@g-;C 3 N 5 @Zn-TCPP sensor achieves a remarkable response (R 0 /R g = 223 toward 5 ppm NH 3 ), a low detection limit of 232 ppb, and excellent durability over 1000 bending cycles at room temperature. Machine-learning-assisted analysis further enables accurate discrimination of NH 3 from interfering gases (R 2 = 0.91). The sensor also distinguishes breath NH 3 variations between healthy individuals and disease-related samples, highlighting its potential for intelligent non-invasive breath analysis. This work establishes a bioinspired molecular recognition strategy by coupling pore confinement with interfacial electric-field regulation, providing a new paradigm for selective gas sensing and wearable health-monitoring platforms.

With the development of industry, the scarcity of lithium resources is becoming increasingly prominent. Therefore, the development of high-performance nanofiltration (NF) membranes for lithium extraction from salt lakes has become crucial. Herein, β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) and amino-rich graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 5 ) sol were uniformly mixed to form β-CD@g-C 3 N 5 , which was then mixed with polyetherimide (PEI) monomer and subjected to interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on a 0.22 μm microfiltration (MF) membrane to prepare the PEI-(β-CD@g-C 3 N 5 )/TMC composite NF membrane. Through thin plate theory and gradient operation pressure filtration tests, it was found that the composite NF membrane prepared on the MF membrane substrate was not only defect-free but also exhibited superior compression resistance. In Li + /Mg 2+ filtration tests, the PEI-(β-CD@g-C 3 N 5 )/TMC membrane showed superior NF performance, with a Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity coefficient of 38.85 and a permeability of 8.91 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 . This was attributed to the effect of β-CD@g-C 3 N 5 , which could thin the separation layer, slightly enlarge and more uniformly distribute the pores, increase hydrophilicity, and enhance positive charge; meanwhile, the cavity structure provided by β-CD helped to effectively separate Li + /Mg 2+ . Furthermore, under conditions of mixed salt solutions with different Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratios and 80 h of continuous filtration, the membrane exhibited excellent stability. This work introduces innovative membrane materials and design concepts to the field of lithium extraction via NF, potentially paving the way for the industrial application of NF technology.
