Optical Haze Nanopaper Enhanced Ultraviolet Harvesting for Direct Soft-Fluorescent Emission Based on Lanthanide Complex Assembly and Oxidized Cellulose Nanofibrils

Sufeng Zhang,Gang Liu,Hui Chang,Xinping Li,Zhao Zhang

Optical haze nanopapers were fabricated based on a self-assembly process of lanthanide complexes with tris(2-benzimidazolylmethyl) amine (NTB) [(Tb(NTB)Cl3 and/or Eu(NTB)Cl3] and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (tCNFs), using a subsequent simple blending-vacuum filtration method. These optical haze nanopapers were characterized in terms of visible light transmittance, efficiency of ultraviolet (UV) light harvesting, and soft-fluorescence emission. The lanthanide complexes acted as a light-scattering source to enhance optical haze (∼100%) and a light emitter to emit soft-fluorescence under a UV light-emitting diode (UV-LED, λex, 365 nm). Due to excellent light-scattering behavior induced by the optical haze nanopaper, UV harvesting efficiency was increased from 53% to 98%, and the absolute quantum efficiency was enhanced from 21% to 25%. The optical haze nanopaper with high efficiency UV harvesting and soft-fluorescent emission presented potential applications in solar cells, lampshades, light diffusers, UV-blocking devices, anticounterfeiting devices, and organic light-emitting diodes.

Balanced electro-optical properties and off-axis haze performance of a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal film via refractive index matching

Meina Yu,Jianjun Xu,Luoning Zhang,Qian Wang,Cheng Zou,Yanzi Gao,Huai Yang

As a type of smart dimming film, polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) show great prospects in the fields of indoor partition, electronic curtains, and automobile windows. However, its high off-axis haze greatly impacts the application scope. This obvious shortcoming is mainly caused by the serious mismatch between the effective refractive index of the liquid crystal (neff) and the refractive index of the polymer matrix (np) at large viewing angles. Thereby, factors affecting the viewing angle of a PDLC film are analyzed in this research, including the birefringence of the liquid crystal (Δn), film thickness, and the refractive index of the polymer matrix (np). Balanced electro-optical properties are guaranteed simultaneously. It is found that high on-state transmittance and low off-axis haze can be achieved at large viewing angles in the suggested optimized case where Δn is within the range of 0.1–0.13; the film thickness is between 20 μm and 15 μm; and np approaches no but the difference does not exceed 0.03.

Facile way of preparing PMMA@TiO2@SiO2 (P@T@S) composite microspheres with high haze and light transmittance for diffusion film

Liangyong He,Yuqing Yang,Bin Yang,Weiqiang Hu,Zhengzhi Zheng,Tianyu Lu,Haijia He,Jiasheng Qian,Yaoyang Chen,Weiguo Zhang,Yuchao Ke

In recent years, optical diffusion film materials with high transmittance and high haze have been widely reported, while there is relatively rare research on their functionalization and practical application especially in real scenario. In this work, optical diffusion films using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)@TiO 2 @SiO 2 (P@T@S) composite microspheres were fabricated, which exhibited sufficiently high light transmittance and haze. The binding mode of PMMA microspheres and nanoparticles suggested that PMMA microspheres with a positive surface potential combined with nanoparticles with a negative surface potential through electrostatic attraction to achieve mutual binding. The prepared P@T@S composite microspheres showed better heat and swelling resistance than those of PMMA microspheres. The P@T@S diffusion film, whose excellent light diffusion effect was clearly demonstrated, exhibited the best optical performance among all optical diffusion films prepared. After passing through the P@T@S diffusion film, the laser light was not only uniform but also bright. The findings from this work can provide some insight into further research on optical diffusion films applied in optoelectronic device areas.

3D-Printed Polylactic Acid/Lignin Films with Great Mechanical Properties and Tunable Functionalities towards Superior UV-Shielding, Haze, and Antioxidant Properties

Haichuan Ye,Yuan He,Haichao Li,Tingting You,Feng Xu

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is regarded as a novel technique to realize the customized production of films. However, the relative lack of printable materials with excellent mechanical properties and tailored functionalities seriously restricts its wide application. Herein, a promising multifunctional 3D printing filament was fabricated by incorporating lignin into the polylactic acid (PLA) matrix and firstly applied to film production. The results indicate that lignin was an excellent mechanical reinforcement of the PLA matrix, especially for toughening. Only 0.5% lignin doping improved the toughness by 81.8%. Additionally, 3D-printed films with 0.5–5% lignin exhibited excellent ultraviolet (UV)-blocking capability of 87.4–99.9% for UVB and 65.6–99.8% for UVA, as well as remarkable antioxidant properties, ranging from 24.0% to 79.0%, and high levels of haze, ranging from 63.5% to 92.5%. Moreover, the prepared PLA/lignin (P/L) films based on 3D printing achieved the customization of film production and have potential applications in the fields of packaging, electronic products, medical care, and so forth. Overall, this work not only enriches the 3D printing composites with tailored multifunctionality but also brings the promising potential for the production of customized films.

Colored Gold Ions Enabled High-Transparent and Low-Haze Cellulose Films with Excellent Flame-Retardant and UV to Blue Light-Blocking Performance

Qiu Fu,Ying Qin,Jingyuan Zhang,Weimin Guo,Kuo Zhang,Tianyuan Xiao,Xinjia Zhang,Jiang Chang,Lijian Sun

The potential dangers associated with UV and high-energy blue light (HEBL) exposure to human ocular health are increasingly attracting scholarly interest due to the escalating use of electronic devices. It is still a great challenge for materials to achieve efficient filtering of UV and HEBL while maintaining low haze and high transmittance. Herein, we reported a facile and green process for fabricating biodegradable and flexible gold ion (Au3+)-coordinated cellulose-based light filters with diverse UV- and HEBL-screening capacities via adsorption of Au3+. The incorporation of Au3+ results in superior UV- and HEBL-screening performance, especially almost 100% absorption of UVA and UVB. Meanwhile, the films could block 67.9–98.8% of HEBL in the 400–450 nm region. By absorption of light, these films can efficiently filter blue light emitted by lighting systems, computer and mobile phone screens. The films maintained exceptionally high transmittance (83.2–86.9%) and low haze (2.1–2.4%). Furthermore, the films exhibited stable UV and HEBL screening under thermal treatment or UV irradiation. Quite encouragingly, the incorporation of Au3+ facilitates films in achieving desirable flame retardancy, evidenced by a significant increase in the limiting oxygen index from 19.2% to 39.2%. Compared to the unaltered film, the films containing Au3+ demonstrate a marked decrease in peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat released (THR), with values declining from 203.8 to 15.5 W/g and 11.7 to 3.0 KJ/g, respectively. Our discoveries grant Au3+ a role in the realm of UV to blue light blocking, thus advancing the development of ion-based optical materials for the creation of antiblue light films and devices.

A flexible phase change gel with complementary regulation of haze and supercooling degree by hydroxyethyl cellulose and cellulose nanocrystals for light and thermal management

Yunjie Ju,Jiayu Liu,Yonggui Wang,Zefang Xiao,Yanjun Xie

The phase change gel offers temperature regulation capability. • HEC and CNC synergistically regulate optical properties and lowered supercooling. • The gel exhibites thermal responsiveness in both optical and mechanical properties. • Smart windows from the gel are used for energy saving and daylight simulation. With the increasing demands for sustainable development and visual comfort, smart window materials integrating light regulation and energy conservation have experienced rapid advancement. This paper presented a strategy based on hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) free radical polymerization to prepare phase-change gels for smart windows, which combine thermal energy storage with light regulation functions. Utilizing polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the energy storage component, leveraging its thermally responsive solid-liquid phase change characteristics, and incorporating the complementary effects of sulfonated cellulose nanocrystals (SCNC) on optical properites and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) on supercooling degree, the regulation of transmittance and haze was achieved, with an enthalpy of melting reaching 103.11 J g −1 . Within the operating temperature ranging from melting point to 40 ℃, the transmittance consistently remained above 80% with increasing SCNC addition, while the haze can be adjusted from 1.06% to 91.06%. EnergyPlus simulation results demonstrated that the smart window achieved an annual energy saving rate of 13.89% in Phoenix, while providing soft indoor lighting, offering significant potential for green and sustainable transformation in the construction industry. A partial dissolution-regeneration strategy for preparing water-resistant composite film of cellulose I and cellulose II with high light transmittance and adjustable haze

Lijiaqi Zhang,Yong Huang,Min Wu

Due to the excellent properties of nanocellulose film such as biodegradability and renewability, researchers have conducted in-depth research on it in recent years. However, rich hydroxyl groups on the surface of nanocellulose make it hydrophilic , and small gaps between the fibrils have significant capillary effect, which cause the strength of nanocellulose film drastically deteriorates when exposed to water, severely restricting its scope of use. In this study, the nanocellulose prepared by ball milling was used to prepare nanocellulose film, and the surface of the film was partially dissolved by ZnCl 2 . The dense regenerated cellulose (Cellulose Ⅱ) with Zn 2+ on the surface made the film hydrophobic, effectively reduced the water absorption rate of the film, and also maintained the internal structure of the nanocellulose. Through this strategy, the nanocellulose film with high dry strength (151–176 MPa), wet strength (27.6–31.7 MPa), high light transmittance (80–91%), and adjustable haze (50–90%) was obtained. This study provides a facile and environmentally friendly strategy to improve the wet strength of nanocellulose film, which broadens its application prospect in packaging materials and electronic devices.

Fabrication of flexible transparent paper substrate via epoxy resin impregnation and luminescence enhancement through synergistic action of high transparency and desirable haze of substrate for LEC devices

Zhongming Song,Guodong Liu,Tianhao Wang,Jiahao Wu,Hanbin Liu,Zhijian Li

In this study, we present a novel method for fabricating flexible transparent paper substrates via epoxy resin impregnation and coating, which exhibit high transparency (90.98 %) and desirable haze (41.5 %). In this method, the epoxy resin with a refractive index close to that of cellulose fibers, is employed to effectively fill the porous structure of the paper substrate, significantly enhancing the transparency of the substrate while maintaining an appropriate haze. This not only allows for more light transmission but also facilitates light absorption and scattering at wide angles, improving the optical coupling efficiency for light-emitting devices. Additionally, the fibers in the substrate provide the skeletal structure, whilst the fiber encapsulation by the epoxy enhances the mechanical properties and chemical stability of the substrate. Simultaneously, due to the interfacial interlocking and hydrogen bonding of the conductive PEDOT:PSS spin-coated with its interacting substrate, it forms a flexible PEDOT:PSS electrode having stable physical and chemical performance. Finally, based on the excellent optical and mechanical properties of the prepared substrate, we successfully fabricate light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) through an all-solution processing method under ambient conditions. The LECs on the transparent paper substrate achieve superior maximum luminance ( L max  = 1082.4 cd m −2 ) and current efficiency ( CE max  = 1.14 cd A −1 ), surpassing those of devices prepared on conventional PET. This work proposes a novel method for the preparation of a low-cost and high-performance substrate.
