Lignin is a renewable bioresource that can be used for a variety of value-added applications. However, the effective separation of lignin from lignocellulosic biomass remains an ongoing challenge. In this study, lignin was extracted from waste palm fiber and successfully converted into a dehumidifying material. The following four process parameters of lignin extraction from palm fiber were optimized systematically and comprehensively using the response surface methodology: reaction time, extraction temperature, ethanol concentration and solid/liquid ratio. The results revealed that under the optimum processing conditions (111 min of extraction at 174 °C using 73% ethanol at 1/16 g/mL solid/liquid ratio), the extraction yield of lignin was 56.2%. The recovery of ethanol solvent was as high as 91.8%. Further, the lignin could be directly used without purification to produce lignin-based activated carbon fibers (LACFs) with specific surface area and total pore volume of 1375 m2/g and 0.881 cm3/g, respectively. Compared with the commercial pitch-based activated carbon fiber, the LACF has a higher specific area and superior pore structure parameters. This work provides a feasible route for extracting lignin from natural palm fiber and demonstrates its use in the preparation of activated carbon fiber with a remarkable performance as a solid dehumidification agent.

Improving pretreatment efficiency is a critical premise in achieving efficient biomass conversion, and obtaining high-performance natural polymers is the guarantee of high-value conversion of biomass. In this study, a new pilot-scale continuous countercurrent pretreatment reaction unit about ethylene glycol-alkali solution was designed for pretreating sugarcane bagasse in order to achieve efficient separation of the three major components of lignocellulose when expanding the scale of pretreatment, reduce lignin deposition on the fiber surface, and obtain highly active lignin and excellent enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of cellulose. X-ray diffractometer (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), brunauer-emmett-teller (BET) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) methods are used to analyze the structural properties of sugarcane bagasse before and after pretreatment, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is used to analyze the monosaccharide components in the enzymatic solution. In addition, the structural properties of the recovered lignin are analyzed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), 31 P NMR and 2D-HSQC-NMR methods. The results indicate that the system can gain a high cellulose recovery of 92.99% along with a lignin removal of 95.33%, and recovered lignin has low lignin carbohydrate complexes, low condensation, and rich in phenolic hydroxyl groups for 1.95 mmol/g. Meanwhile, the countercurrent pretreatment system can effectively reduce the deposition of lignin on the cellulose surface, which is evidently superior to the non-countercurrent pretreatment and facilitates the efficiency of enzymatic saccharification of substrate, achieving a high glucose yield of 99% as well as a total sugar yield of 91.11%. The method efficiently separates biomass in a green manner, and solid residues are easily hydrolyzed, showing potential for industrial-scale production.

Selective cleavage of C O bonds in benzyl phenyl ether (BPE) as a typical lignin α-O-4 ether to produce aromatics is a challenging and attractive topic. Herein, the earth-abundant first-row transition metals, such as Co, Ni and Cu were supported on activated carbon (Co/AC, Ni/AC and Cu/AC) to identify their ability for cleaving C O bond of BPE. Among these catalysts, Ni/AC exhibit highest activity for cleavage of C O bond. The reaction with BPE was carried out at pretty mild condition of 140 °C and 2 MPa H 2 , which is highly selective afforded toluene and phenol as the major products with the optimum yields of 88.5 and 86.5%, respectively. Based on the test, the reaction pathways were proposed. A abundant of dissociated H· atoms on Ni(0) sites forms surface active Ni H species; Ni(0) activates and facilitates cleavage of the C O bond in BPE to form benzyl (C 6 H 5 C·) and phenoxy radicals (C 6 H 5 O·); H· atoms spill from active species Ni H recombined together with C 6 H 5 C· and C 6 H 5 O· forming the products of toluene and phenol, respectively.

This study focuses on enhancing the strength and water stability of paper straws through a novel approach involving a binary emulsion of lignin-based polyurethane and chitosan. Kraft lignin serves as the raw material for synthesizing a blocked waterborne polyurethane , subsequently combined with carboxylated chitosan to form a stable binary emulsion. The resulting emulsion, exhibiting remarkable stability over at least 6 months, is applied to the base paper. Following emulsion application, the paper undergoes torrefaction at 155 °C. This process deblocks isocyanate groups, enabling their reaction with hydroxyl groups on chitosan and fibers, ultimately forming ester bonds. This reaction significantly improves the mechanical strength and hydrophobicity of paper straws. The composite paper straws demonstrate exceptional mechanical properties, including a tensile strength of 47.21 MPa, Young's modulus of 4.33 GPa, and flexural strength of 32.38 MPa. Notably, its water stability is greatly enhanced, with a wet tensile strength of 40.66 MPa, surpassing commercial paper straws by 8 folds. Furthermore, the composite straw achieves complete biodegradability within 120 days, outperforming conventional paper straws in terms of environmental impact. This innovative solution presents a promising and sustainable alternative to plastic straws, addressing the urgent need for eco-friendly products.

As an “upstream” process in biorefinery, biomass dismantling can dismantle the natural stable structure of lignocellulosic biomass and separate its three major components. To increase the value of the entire biomass by fully utilizing the three main components (cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose), this study proposes a two-step decomposition system combining formic acid (FA) pretreatment and ethylene glycol-NaOH (EGA) dismantling, aiming to effectively convert sugarcane bagasse into xylose, fermentable glucose, and high-value lignin. In the first step, FA pretreatment removed 79.85 % of hemicellulose at 140 °C for 90 min with 3 % FA. Based on the first step, further combination of EGA dismantling can achieve a hemicellulose removal rate of 92.05 % and a lignin removal rate of 95.90 %. In addition, the solid residue was hydrolyzed by enzymes, and the glucose conversion rate was close to 83.29 % when the cellulase dosage was 10 FPU/g. In addition, the lignin recovered by this system retained 83.62 % of the natural β-O-4 structure, which has the potential to catalyze the formation of aromatic monomers. In summary, this gentle two-step system simultaneously improves the efficiency of lignocellulose decomposition and produces different value-added products, demonstrating the potential for industrial-scale production.

Biomass transformation into high-value carbon nanomaterials plays a dual role of easing the energy material crisis and reasonable disposal of waste. Here, we employed biomass lignin as carbon source to synthesize fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) through a facile two-step method. The preparation condition is optimized at 0.3 g of acid additive and 200 ℃, 16 h of hydrothermal treatment. The resultant CQDs with the average diameter of 4.86 nm and high quantum yield of 23.68% are composed of carbon cores and surface functional groups, exhibiting the maximum green emission wavelength of 476 nm. The formation mechanism involves acid dissociation of lignin in the first step, and then the aromatic refusion of lignin fragments. The CQDs show great advantages as fluorescent nanoprobe for metal ion detection, which present an apparent and selective fluorescence quenching effect on Fe 3+ . This CQD nanoprobe has a highly sensitive response to Fe 3+ ions in the concentration of 0 ~ 300 μM with detection limit of 0.77 μM. The utilization of renewable biomass lignin in this study not only opens the avenue of the sustainable, cost-effective and mass production of CQDs, but also provides a novel alternative nanoprobe for sensing field.

Although the coating can effectively prevent metal corrosion, it is easy to form micro-pores and micro-cracks during the curing process, and the coating is inevitably damaged by the external environment during use, resulting in a reduction in its protective ability, thereby shortening the service life of the substrate. Inspired by the stress closure function of mimosa, an intelligent anti-corrosion coating with stress closure function against corrosion products (Fe 2+ ) was prepared by using pyridine derivatives and lignin grafted graphene oxide (ATGO). By density functional theory calculation, the binding energy of pyridine group and Fe 2+ was −369.99 kcal/mol, and their strong complexation would facilitate the formation of a dense protective layer at the metal corrosion interface. The test results showed that ATGO-CM coating had high fracture strength (86.9 MPa) and adhesion strength (2.03 MPa), as well as low water vapor permeability (1.3 × 10 -6 g m −1 day −1 Pa −1 ). Electrochemical testing denoted that after soaking in 3.5 wt% saline solution for 100 days, the impedance modulus of the ATGO-CM coating remained at 5.36 × 10 9 Ω·cm 2 at low frequencies (f = 0.01 Hz), which was two orders of magnitude higher than the blank group. Through scratch experiments showed that the complexation effect of pyridine groups and corrosive products could significantly improve the corrosion resistance of the coating, with R ct value of 1.8 × 10 4 Ω cm 2 for the damaged coating, one order of magnitude higher than the blank group. This work not only provided a reference for the preparation of intelligent anti-corrosion coatings with bionic functions, but also increased the added value of biomass materials.

Developing highly efficient, sustainable carbon cathodes is essential for emerging Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZICs). Herein, lignin's novel chemical modification (amination) has been developed to produce high quantity pyrrolic-N moieties as active sites. Furthermore, chemically modified amine moieties in lignin are vital as a natural self-activating template to generate hierarchical porosity in the 2D (graphene-like) architecture with exceedingly high surface area (2926.4 m 2 g −1 ). The rationally introduced dominated pyrrolic-N moieties boost the Zn-ion storage capacity and reaction kinetics due to the dual energy storage mechanism and efficient charge transfer between pyrrolic-N and Zn +2 ions. Furthermore, the pyrrolic-N species are energetically favorable for the adsorption of Zn +2 ions by the formation of N -Zn +2 chemical bonds. Besides, the nitrogen oxides reduce the intrinsic resistance and induce a more polarized surface, resulting in high wettability and efficient transfer of electrolytes into the pores of hydrophobic carbon materials . Subsequently, the chemically modified lignin-derived activated carbon material (Chem-ACM) as a cathode in ZICs delivers a high capacity of 161.2 mA h g −1 at 1 A g −1 with the admirable energy density of 106.7 W h kg −1 at 897 W kg −1 and excellent retention capacity (94%) after 10,000 cycles. Mainly, the assembled quasi solid-state ZICs using Chem-ACM retains the remarkable storage capacity (202 mA h g −1 at 0.2 Ag −1 ) even at a high bending angle. Notably, the Chem-ACM has been further employed in symmetric supercapacitors as an electrode, and it displays exceptional specific capacitance of 354 Fg −1 at 0.5 Ag −1 with tremendous energy (43.5 W h kg −1 ) and the power density (0.53 kW kg −1 ). Additionally, the charge storage capability of Chem-ACM is positively dependent on high nitrogen contents, and it is extrapolated that pyrrolic-N moieties are dominant active sites. Hence, the designed amination-assisted biocarbon synthesis provides a new way to prepare high nitrogen-containing biocarbon for ZICs and further understand pyrrolic-N species' impact on Zn-ion storage.

Introducing microphase separation and dynamic bonds into the polymeric materials is an effective strategy to enhance the performance of polyurethane . Herein, a modified lignin-based polyol (MLOH) was developed via a facile one-step approach which greatly improved its reactivity and dispersibility compared to that of virgin lignin. Subsequently, inspired by the biphasic structure of natural spider silk , a high-performance modified lignin-based dynamic covalent polyurethane (MLPU) with lignin enhanced microphase separation was fabricated, exploiting the synthetic MLOH as the crosslinker and the dynamic oxime-carbamate bonds as the linkage. Besides possessing high repairing efficiency (3 min for 100%, 80 °C without pressure), and outstanding shape-memory capability, the optimized MLPU-2 demonstrated robust adhesive performance when applied as a polyurethane hot-melt adhesive, including a fast curing rate and high adhesive strength (10.50 MPa). Meanwhile, it also manifested remarkable solvent resistance , temperature tolerance from −30 °C to 60 °C, long-term durability for at least 3 months, on-demand debonding ability, and excellent reusability . The synergistic effect of lignin enhanced microphase separation and adjustable dynamic crosslinked structure endows the remarkable performance of this resultant dynamic covalent MLPU, which provides another way to develop green, sustainable polyurethane simultaneously with highly comprehensive performances for the potential practical application.

Confronted with the shortage of fossil energy, the large inventory and the serious pollution of industrial solid waste, the development of clean and efficient industrial solid waste disposal methods have become a trend. In this study, Thermogravimetric-Fourier transform infrared spectrometry was utilized to carry out the co-pyrolysis experiment of coal slime and lignin. Pyrolysis experiments were carried out following 7 different mass mixing ratios. The initial pyrolysis temperatures of CS, S9G1, S7G3, S5G5, S3G7, S1G9, and LIG were 414.5, 373.3, 287.6, 233.3, 225.8, 218.6, and 209.6 °C, respectively. By observing the evolution of the gaseous products of the sample pyrolysis, the results showed that the gaseous products mainly include hydrocarbons, aldehydes, ethers, and alcohols. The ratio of lignin in the mixture was changed, and the interaction between the sample particles was different. The principal component analysis method provided helps to understand the mechanism of co-pyrolysis of coal slime and lignin. The relative error of the established artificial neural network prediction was less than 2.5%. This paper comprehensively analyzed the interaction and gas evolution law during the co-pyrolysis of coal slime and lignin.

Photocatalysis water treatment without artificial energy is cost-effective, waste-free and sustainable. Coventional powder photocatalysts have tiny contact surfaces, low catalytic efficiency, and are difficult to recycle and reuse, restricting their usage. Herein, a Lignin@t-FeC 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 material is developed by engineering hollow quadrangle t-FeC 2 O 4 and g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets on lignin membranes through facile impregnation coating and precipitation reaction. Fast mass transport, catalytic activity and accessibility characterize hollow tetragonal FeC 2 O 4 · 2H 2 O. TEM, SEM and FTIR show that lignin binds t-FeC 2 O 4 and g-C 3 N 4 . The g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets are uniformly wrapped on the surface of lignin fibers, and t-FeC 2 O 4 is loaded between them. This structure increases visible light absorption and active site-contaminant contact. The chain reaction produces extremely active hydroxyl radicals from hydrogen peroxide because the Lignin@t-FeC 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 modules are rich inFe II , according to XPS. Transient photocurrent response curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy suggest a promoted charge migration and isolation at the redox reaction interface in the Lignin@t-FeC 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 system. As a result, Lignin@t-FeC 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 degrades 99% Rhodamine B within 40 minutes, and this performance is stable even under difficult conditions, such as low hydrogen peroxide concentration and high pH. This study combines lignin membranes with the photo-Fenton reaction, and thus provides new concept for the development and application of membranes and photocatalysis.

A new type of modified lignin, lignin-p-Boc, was obtained through reaction with di- tert -butyl dicarbonate (Boc 2 O) in aqueous media catalyzed by 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP). Boc modification occurred regardless of type of lignin, was tunable, and proceeded well in recovering lignin at high purity from sodium lignosulfonate (a common byproduct from pulping industry; lignin content: 60%). Lignin-p-BOC was demonstrated as a potential reactive filler in green plastic and as a potential crosslinker in design of bioresorbable composite polymeric implants. Furthermore, the effect of the modification on breakdown rate of alkali lignin by microbes was investigated, and results showed that the modification substantially decreases the breakdown rate. The tunable Boc modification process was designed via a system thinking, including availability of raw lignin, economical/green modification, potentiality of drop-in-change to current thermoplastic processing, modification impact on microbial degradability/disposed environment at the end of use life; hence the holistic consideration makes this alternative method for upgrade of technical lignins very practical for future industrial application. Via “ in-situ ” forming “easily breakable covalent bonds” with existing thermopolymers inside, Lignin-p-BOCs are also promising to play an important role as both excellent binders via “random match” and reductants in transforming linear plastic waste into circular plastics.
