Fabrication of partially biobased carbon fibers from novel lignosulfonate–acrylonitrile copolymers

Ouyang Qin,Xia Keqiang,Liu Dapeng,Jiang Xuefeng,Ma Hongbo,Chen Yousi

Lignin, as an abundant carbon-rich renewable resource, is a promising precursor for carbon fibers. However, due to the poor spinnability of lignin, a great challenge comes from the spinning of precursor fibers. In this work, a series of lignosulfonate–acrylonitrile (LS–AN) copolymers with different LS contents were prepared by a two-step process consisting of esterification and free radical copolymerization. In this strategy, lignin was used as a macromer and chemically bonded to acrylonitrile segmer, resulting in significant improvement of the spinnability. Continuous long precursor fibers with a dense structure were successfully prepared from these copolymers by a wet spinning technique and then converted into carbon fibers by thermal stabilization and carbonization. The LS–AN copolymers were characterized by FTIR, GPC, and rheological method. The results confirmed the macromolecular characteristic of the LS–AN copolymers. A hanging lantern model was proposed to describe the molecular structure of the LS–AN copolymers. Effect of the LS–AN copolymers on the microstructure and mechanical properties of carbon fibers was investigated by SEM, single fiber tensile testing, XRD, and HRTEM. The results demonstrated the feasibility of developing partially biobased carbon fibers from the novel LS–AN copolymers.

Lignosulfonate functionalized nanomaterials for enhancement of the electrochemical performance of polyaniline

Shunrui Wang,Tao Feng,Yongan Chen,Gang Liu

The electrochemical enhancement of polyaniline (PANI) by adding nanomaterials is closely related with the dispersion state of the nanomaterials in PANI. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of well-mixed PANI/nanomaterials composites through solid-phase exfoliation and subsequent in-situ polymerization. Bulk molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) or carbon nanotube (CNT) bundles were firstly ball-milled in the presence of calcium lignosulphonate to provide lignosulfonate (LS) noncovalently functionalized MoS 2 nanosheets or CNTs, which were then used as skeletons for in-situ polymerization of aniline. The resulted nanocomposites exhibited enhanced electrochemical properties as compared with pure PANI. Typically, the ternary composite PANI/MoS 2 -LS/CNT-LS delivered a specific capacitance of 458.9 F/g, a 63% improvement than PANI at 1 A/g in a three-electrode system. Furthermore, excellent cycle stability (86% capacitance retention after 10, 000 charge-discharge cycles) and high specific energy (10.9 Wh/kg at specific power of 265.3 W/kg) were obtained in a coin-type symmetric supercapacitor. The study provides an efficient and facile approach for fabrication of conductive polymer/nanomaterials composite for supercapacitors with good stability and performance.

Sodium Lignosulfonate-Loaded Halloysite Nanotubes/Epoxy Composites for Corrosion Resistance Coating

Weilin Liu,Jiansan Li

Corrosion resistance coating applied on Q235 carbon steel in a chloride-rich environment was explored in our research. The coating as a barrier inhibits the penetration of the corrosion medium and provides active corrosion protection for Q235 carbon steel. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were loaded with sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) under vacuum conditions. 4.53% of loading efficiency was validated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The deposition of polyelectrolyte layers including poly(dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride) (PDDA) and poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) not only resulted in controlling the release rate of SLS but also enabled the HNTs to possess pH-responsive release property. The modified HNTs were defined as “PSS/PDDA/SLS/HNTs”, which were characterized by SEM, TEM, FTIR, and zeta potential analyses. TGA elucidates that PSS/PDDA/SLS/HNTs exhibit superior thermal stability. The results of UV–vis spectroscopic analysis confirm that HNTs exhibit a higher release amount in an alkaline medium than in neutral and acidic conditions. Afterward, PSS/PDDA/SLS/HNTs were mixed with the epoxy coating, which was applied on Q235 carbon steel immersed in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution. Electrochemical measurements illustrate the excellent corrosion resistance of the epoxy coating with the addition of PSS/PDDA/SLS/HNTs. Also, water contact angle analysis demonstrates the modification of the epoxy coating with decent hydrophobicity.

Preparation of Aminated Sodium Lignosulfonate and Efficient Adsorption of Methyl Blue Dye

Li-Zhu Huo,Chao-Fei Guo,Zhu-Xiang Gong,Hao Xu,Xue-Juan Yang,Yu-Xuan Wang,Xi-Ping Luo

The aminated sodium lignosulfonate (AELS) was prepared through a Mannich reaction and characterized via FT-IR, TG, SEM and XPS in this study. Subsequently, the adsorption capacity of AELS for methyl blue (MB) was evaluated under various conditions such as pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial concentration and temperature. The adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics of AELS for methyl blue were investigated and analyzed. The results were found to closely adhere to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting a single-molecular-layer adsorption process. Notably, the maximum adsorption capacity of AELS for methyl blue (153.42 mg g−1) was achieved under the specified conditions (T= 298 K,MAELS= 0.01 g, pH = 6,VMB= 25 mL,C0= 300 mg L−1). The adsorption process was determined to be spontaneous and endothermic. Following five adsorption cycles, the adsorption capacity exhibited a minimal reduction from 118.99 mg g−1to 114.33 mg g−1, indicating good stability. This study contributes to the advancement of utilizing natural resources effectively and sustainably.

Hydrophobic modified starch reinforced chitosan/lignosulfonate composite film for cherry tomatoes preservation

Xijiao Bian,Zhuqing Liu,Jiaqian Cui,Junwei Tang,Jungang Jiang,Yifan Zhang,Lei Wang

AKDSC reduces the water sensitivity of starch via hydrolysis condensation reaction. • AKDSC enhances the interaction and networking between CH and SL. • The CH/SL- AKDSC exhibits excellent barrier and mechanical properties. • The CH/SL- AKDSC effectively extends the shelf life of cherry tomatoes. To address the environmental pollution caused by petroleum-based plastic packaging, the development of high-performance biodegradable films has become a key research focus in the field of food packaging. In this study, hydrophobically modified starch (AKDSC) was prepared via the esterification reaction of alkyl ketene dimer and subsequently introduced into a chitosan/sodium lignosulfonate (CH/SL) composite system, successfully constructing a multifunctional composite film (CH/SL-AKDSC). The structural characterization results indicated the formation of a denser hydrogen bond network between the phenolic hydroxyl/amino groups in CH/SL and the hydroxyl groups in AKDSC. The performance tests showed that the film exhibited a water contact angle of 105.9°, an oxygen transmission rate as low as 1.18 g/(m 2 ·d), and an ultraviolet shielding rate of over 99%. In a 10-day cherry tomato preservation experiment, the CH/SL-AKDSC film demonstrated good preservation effects, highlighting its practical application potential in green and efficient food packaging. Polyethylene/Hydrophobic Calcium Lignosulfonate Composite Film for Anti-Photooxidation of Fuji Apples

Song Zhang,Zhang Chen,Yanfeng Gao

Excessive ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure induces photooxidative stress in plants, leading to severe cell damage. Current packaging films often rely on nonrenewable, petroleum-based UV absorbers, which may pose potential health risks. Calcium lignosulfonate, a natural byproduct derived from the pulp and paper industry, has attracted significant attention as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based UV absorbers. In this study, calcium lignosulfonate was hydrophobically modified to enhance its compatibility with nonpolar low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and a UV-blocking composite film was subsequently fabricated. The hydrophobic modification significantly increased the water contact angle of calcium lignosulfonate from 5° to 101°. Incorporating the modified calcium lignosulfonate into LDPE improved both the melting point and crystallinity of the polymer. The resulting composite film demonstrated excellent UV-blocking performance, achieving a UV-A blocking rate of 95% and a UV-B blocking rate of 99%, and effectively mitigated photooxidative browning in “Fuji” apples. This film exhibits great potential for anti-photooxidation packaging applications while simultaneously reducing dependence on petroleum-based resources.

Pore structure manipulation-enhanced sodium storage of calcium-lignosulfonate-based hard carbon

Yunfei Gou,Lixin Bai,Yandong Ma,Jian Jiang,Lingbin Kong,Yuruo Qi

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted a lot of attention owing to their low cost, as well as similar working mechanism and manufacturing technique to lithium-ion batteries. However, the practical application of SIBs is severely hindered by limited electrode materials. Disordered carbons are reported to be promising as anode materials for SIBs. Here, for the first time, calcium lignosulfonate (LSCa), one papermaking waste, is explored as a novel low-cost precursor for carbon materials of SIBs. The optimized LSCa-derived carbon delivers a high reversible capacity of 317 mA h g −1 at 30 mA g −1 with ~60% plateau capacity, and it retains a capacity of 170 mA h g −1 even at 3000 mA g −1 . These achievements are ascribed to the larger d 002 values, smaller defects, and more closed pores, compared with the original sample from the direct carbonization of LSCa.

Lignosulfonate-based heterogeneous sulfonic acid catalyst for hydrolyzing glycosidic bonds of polysaccharides

Xiaochen Zhang,Zhe Zhang,Feng Wang,Yehong Wang,Qi Song,Jie Xu

We report a novel lignosulfonate-based heterogeneous sulfonic acid catalyst (LF) which offered high yields of monosaccharides (75–98%) in hydrolysis of polysaccharides , such as cellobiose, maltose, d -melezitose, sucrose, inulin, and starch. Specific activity in cellobiose hydrolysis was 5.6   ±   0.3   mol glucose per mol SO 3 H. Kinetic analysis showed that the apparent activation energy of cellobiose hydrolysis over the LF catalyst is 98.5   kJ   mol −1 , which was less than 110–138   kJ   mol −1 for mineral acids, organic acid homogeneous catalysts or grafted sulfonic acids. The catalyst was recycled by filtration and reused four times in cellobiose hydrolysis without apparent loss of catalytic activity. NMR characterization suggests that the better accessibility of cellobiose to SO 3 H sites and multiple bindings of hydroxyls of cellobiose on COOH and OH sites may account for its superior performance. This is a new method of utilizing pulp industry waste as sulfonic acid precursor; otherwise sulfonation process is required for preparing heterogeneous sulfonic acid catalysts.

Spherical ZnCdS/SiO2 photocatalysts synergizing with sodium lignosulfonate for efficient hydrogen production

Song Tongyang,Zhang Jianxu,Eyoka Bouma Annas Benit,Ye Linjing

Driven by renewable solar energy, biomass reforming under mild conditions for synergistic hydrogen production has emerged as a rapidly developing and promising approach, enabling not only high-purity hydrogen generation but also offering new avenues for biomass reutilization. In this work, a spherical ZCS/SiO 2 composite catalyst was fabricated by anchoring ZnCdS (ZCS) nanoparticles onto SiO 2 nanospheres via a water bath technique coupled with in situ growth. The physicochemical properties of the resulting catalyst were systematically investigated through comprehensive characterization methods, and the behavior of photogenerated charges was analyzed using photoelectrochemical measurements. Among the prepared samples, the ZCS/SiO 2 -100% catalyst exhibited the highest hydrogen evolution activity, achieving a hydrogen evolution rate of 109.16 μmol g −1 h −1 when sodium lignosulfonate, derived from the bamboo pulping process, was used as the substrate. This enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance is primarily attributed to the introduction of SiO 2 , which increases the number of active sites and expands the contact area between the catalyst and reactants. Furthermore, a plausible photocatalytic reaction mechanism is proposed. It is anticipated that this study will provide a promising strategy for green hydrogen production, high-value conversion of organic waste, and the advancement of efficient photocatalytic materials.

Fabricating flame retardant polyacrylonitrile fibers modified by sodium lignosulfonate and copper ions

Yingbin Guo,Chunlong Zuo,Wei Tan,Yansong Liu,Lina Jiang,Dan Yu,Yuanlin Ren,Xiaohui Liu

A facile and eco-friendly approach was developed to endow polyacrylonitrile fibers (PAN) with excellent flame retardancy and char-forming capability. First, aminated PAN (A-PAN) was prepared via ethylenediamine treatment. Next, sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) was adsorbed on the surface and interior of A-PAN through strong ionic bonds to obtain the SLS modified A-PAN, i.e., SLS/A-PAN. Afterwards, copper ions (Cu 2+ ) were chelated with SLS/A-PAN to construct Cu/SLS/A-PAN. The modified PAN samples were characterized by solid-state 13 C NMR, FTIR, XPS and SEM. TGA demonstrated that the preferential degradation of Cu/SLS/A-PAN was prone to forming much char residue whether in N 2 or air atmosphere, which acted as an effective barrier to hinder the decomposition of PAN matrix so as to exhibit excellent flame retardancy. Additionally, the char residue of Cu/SLS/A-PAN showed numerous intumescent vesicles with continuous wavy-like char layer and its I D / I G value was 1.28, exhibiting superior degree of graphitization. Particularly, compared to the pristine sample, the peak of heat release rate of Cu/SLS/A-PAN decreased significantly. In addition, TG-IR indicated the volatile products of Cu/SLS/A-PAN were significantly reduced. SLS and Cu 2+ were cooperative in endowing Cu/SLS/A-PAN with excellent flame retardancy and superior char-forming capability.

Graft polymers of eucalyptus lignosulfonate calcium with acrylic acid: Synthesis and characterization

De-zhan Ye,Xian-cai Jiang,Chao Xia,Lei Liu,Xi Zhang

The graft copolymerization of eucalyptus lignosulfonate calcium (HLS-Ca) from hardwood and acrylic acid (AA) was investigated by using Fenton agent as a coinitiator. The influences of reaction conditions on grafting parameters i.e. product yield ( Y %), AA conversion ( C %), grafting ratio ( G %) and grafting efficiency (GE%) were carefully studied. The effects of the phenolic hydroxyl (Ph-OH) group on the polymerization of AA and grafting reaction were researched. Graft copolymers were identified by the new absorption at 1727   cm −1 , more homogenized morphology and higher decomposition temperature after grafted with AA, as illustrated in FTIR, SEM and TG spectra. The optimum synthesis conditions are as follows: H 2 O 2   =   25.2   mol/L, FeCl 2   =   63.0   mol/L, T   =   50   °C and t   =   2   h and the optimum percentages of Y , C , G and GE are 97.61%, 95.23%, 71.29% and 78.85%, respectively. The Ph-OH group of HLS-Ca cannot inhibit the polymerization of AA and is involved in the grafting reaction as an active center.

Effect of lignosulfonate on the adsorption performance of hematite for Cd(II)

Qianjun Liu,Jiepeng Tang,Xiang Li,Qintie Lin,Rongbo Xiao,Min Zhang,Guangcai Yin,Yangmei Zhou

Lignin is a precursor of humus in soil and sediment. Lignin can be separated from vascular plants in the form of lignosulfonate via pulping processes. On the other hand, composites of iron oxide and organic matter can adsorb heavy metals, and thus influence the migration of these heavy metals in the environment. In this paper, a hematite/lignosulfonate composite (HLS) was prepared via coprecipitation to compare the adsorption performance of hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) toward Cd(II) before and after the incorporation of lignosulfonate (LS). The HLS is found to exhibit a weakly crystalline structure and possess a large number of nanoscale particles . Specific surface area of HLS (291.97 m 2 /g) is about 11 times that of α-Fe 2 O 3 , and the pore volume of HLS (0.22 cm 3 /g) is twice that of α-Fe 2 O 3 . The adsorption of Cd(II) is well illustrated by the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics and the initial adsorption rate ( h ) of HLS is 13.83 times that of α-Fe 2 O 3 . The maximum adsorption capacities are significantly improved from 4.89–6.35 mg/g (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) to 39.03–53.65 mg/g (HLS). A greater affinity and more favorable association between Cd(II) and HLS is observed via fitting models. The incorporation of LS provides HLS with significantly better adsorption properties toward Cd(II) than α-Fe 2 O 3 , as is further confirmed by FT-IR and XPS characterization. Fe-O-O-H and Fe-O-H structures as well as more hydroxyl groups are observed, which promote the adsorption performance since the process are mainly influenced by complexation via coordination bonds.
