Integration of Optical Metamaterials on Curved Surfaces for Non-Contact Temperature Sensing

Hongbing Shi,Mengcheng Wang,Xiaole Ma,Di Wu,Li Jiang,Zhijuan Su,Faheng Zang

(Optical metamaterials like metalenses and metasurfaces show great potential for light manipulation. Their fabrication via integrated-circuit-compatible processes enables applications in quantum information processing, super-resolution imaging, and AR/VR displays, though most realized integrated metamaterials remain passive. Here, we report an active dynamic optical metamaterial that enables real-time tuning of the metamaterial's optical properties via thermal effects such as the thermal reflow effect, facilitating non-contact temperature monitoring on object surfaces. This study utilizes PDMS-assisted nanoimprint lithography to integrate diffractive optical elements (DOEs) on the chip. Differential light efficiencies across various diffraction orders are obtained when the sample is heated above the diffractive grating material's glass transition temperature. Specifically, the ratio of ±first-order diffraction efficiencies shift from 5:1 to 1:1, while the 0 th -order diffraction efficiency exhibits a 70% change. Thermal imaging mapping is subsequently conducted employing dynamically generated two-dimensional (2-D) diffraction patterns, facilitating large-scale, real-time, and precise non-contact temperature monitoring of objects. This work has provided an alternative route for real-time mapping of surface temperature without the need for characterization of material's thermal emission coefficient. It can potentially be used in studying the thermal distribution of a packaged semiconductor chip as well as monitoring the threshold temperature of any DOE-integrated industrial surfaces).

Intelligent Reversible Reconfigurable Metamaterials Based on a Two-Way Shape Memory Polymer

Haoyu Gu,Xiaoyu Dong,Qiankun Zhang,Dequan Chi,Yang Zhang,Zhongjun Cheng,Tong Lv,Zhimin Xie,Yongjun Xu,Dongjie Zhang,Yuyan Liu

The development of intelligent reversible reconfigurable metamaterials has great significance in constructing three-dimensional metamaterials and introducing reversible tunability into metamaterials. Here, we introduce an intelligent metamaterial consisting of a two-way shape memory polymer (2W-SMP) ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) actuator substrate and a patterned flexible-rigid film. Mechanical buckling of the 2W-SMP substrate was controlled by thermal stimulation. This makes it possible to afford an ability to initiate 3D structure formation or shape reconfiguration remotely in an on-demand fashion. In addition, the shape of the 2W-SMP substrate is temperature-dependent, allowing repeatable reversible deformation through temperature control after a single programming. Therefore, the electromagnetic properties of metamaterials can also be repeatedly and reversibly tuned between 9.15 and 10.82 GHz. Experimental demonstrations include the deformation and tunable electromagnetic properties of intelligent reversible reconfigurable metamaterial cells. The results create many opportunities for advanced programmable three-dimensional metamaterials.

Fabrication of flexible acoustic metamaterials by growing metal-organic frameworks on fabrics

Chen Jiahao,Li Huiqin,Zhu Hejin,Gong Jixian,Zhang Chunchun,Li Zheng,Li Qiujin,Liu Xiuming,Xu Jianlin,Zhang Jianfei

As an acoustic metamaterial, Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can absorb sound energy abnormally. In this research, a thin and flexible acoustic material was prepared by growing MOF on the fabric. The successful growth of MIL-53(Fe) on the fiber surface was confirmed by SEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS. From the sound absorption and sound insulation test results of MIL-53(Fe)@fabric, the in-situ growth of MIL-53(Fe) greatly improves the sound absorption and sound insulation performance of the fabric, and gives the fabric an abnormal acoustic effect. From the calculation results of the theoretical model, the growth of the sub-wavelength scale MIL-53(Fe) significantly increases the flow resistance of the fabric, which is the root cause of the abnormal sound absorption of the material. It is worth noting that the sound transmission loss of the prepared flexible material doesn’t follow the mass law and exhibits excellent sound insulation performance. This is not only related to the increase in the sound energy reflected by the fabric, but also to the abnormal sound absorption of MIL-53(Fe). Here, the sound insulation performance of MOFs@fabric is reported for the first time. This work promotes the research and application of MOFs in the field of acoustics, and provides a method and theoretical basis for the design and preparation of acoustic protection textiles. Internal-strain-controlled tungsten bronze structural ceramics for 5G millimeter-wave metamaterials

Lingxia Li,Xubin Wang,Weijia Luo,Shun Wang,Tian Yang,Ji Zhou

Miniaturization, power dissipation and temperature stability are the most critical factors restricting the microwave use of ceramic-based devices. Balancing them, especially for the ceramics with high dielectric constant, is a great challenge. Herein, a new strategy by trivalent ion (Al3+ and Ga3+) co-substitution is put forward in tungsten bronze structural Ba4Nd9.33Ti18O54 ceramics for millimeter-wave metamaterials, and a nearly 40% increase in Qf values with stable temperature characteristics is obtained. The crystal symmetry, morphology and the vibration modes are characterized by XRD, EDS and Raman spectroscopy, suggesting the varied internal strain and oxygen octahedron tilt from the mismatch of different cations. The best performance of Ba4Nd9.33Ti18−x(Al0.4Ga0.6)xO54−0.5x (BNT-AGx) is observed when x is 2.4: εr = 67.71, Qf = 13 675 GHz, τf = +4.4 ppm °C−1. Considering the dispersion relationship of BNT-AGx ceramics further, the structure of BNT-AGx metamaterials is uniquely designed, and the sub-wavelength BNT-AGx blocks are also fabricated to demonstrate the frequency selection filtering function with high temperature stability at the millimeter-wave band (>30 GHz), which is of great significance to achieve some eMBB (Enhanced Mobile Broadband) scenes of 5G (the 5th Generation) technology, from a metal loaded cavity to free space.

Breaking the limitation of terahertz resonances in ferrites through 4D printing of metamaterials

Xinxi Zeng,Pingfan Jia,Desheng Pan,Yunlong Guo,Xiaoqing Xi,Peipei Li,Lingyun Qian,Chaoyang Sun,Ying Li,Bo Li,Ji Zhou

4D printing allows the creation of 3D-printed structures with a variety of new functionalities that respond to external stimuli, including electromagnetic properties, for which research is limited, such as terahertz resonances in ferrite materials; and therefore holding great promise for a wide range of applications. However, the limited physical properties of ferrite materials, including their anisotropic properties and limited material manipulation space, pose significant challenges to the development of ferrite materials designed for progressively increasing terahertz frequencies. Therefore, this paper proposes a platform for overcoming the limitations of terahertz resonance in ferrites through the 4D printing of metamaterials. Both the elastic and viscous moduli of the slurry are sensitive to the applied shear stress; as this stress increases, these moduli sharply decrease by several orders of magnitude, resulting in the transformation of the slurry into a fluid state similar to the liquefaction of ink. Electromagnetic coupling modes between electric dipoles and magnetic dipoles endow these ferrite metamaterials with induction and switching of terahertz resonances due to orientation stimulation. Our work sheds light on the creation of electromagnetic properties and their control by 4D printing.

Mechanically Programmable Electromagnetic Metamaterials for Generalized Phase Tailoring With Zero Static Power Consumption

Shuchang He,Chen Yang,Maosheng Ye,Haishan Tang,Fei Gao,Chengjun Wang,Qian Zhao,Jizhou Song

Mechanically modulated reconfigurable electromagnetic metamaterials represent a promising avenue for flexible wavefront manipulation. However, most mechanically tunable designs rely on collective deformations and continuous external loading, leading to limited programmability and high static power consumption. Here, we present a mechanically programmable electromagnetic metamaterial enabled by 3D-printed shape memory polymer (SMP) compression-torsion coupling structures integrated with the three-fold symmetric three-armed meta-atoms (C3 meta-atoms) for generalized phase tailoring with zero static power consumption. The compression-torsion coupling structures enable deterministic and independent in-plane rotation of each unit cell under vertical compression, while the C3 meta-atoms provide sixfold cross-circularly polarized phase amplification, achieving full 0°–360° phase coverage with a narrow rotational angular range of 0°–60°. Leveraging the intrinsic shape-locking and shape-recovery properties of SMP, arbitrary phase distribution patterns are attainable via mechanical coding without sustained power consumption, and can be repeatedly erased and rewritten via thermal recovery. Numerical simulations and experimental characterizations reveal the design principle and operation mechanism of the metamaterial, verifying its programmable functionalities through demonstrations of anomalous refraction, reconfigurable metalens, and orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) generators. These findings provide a conceptual framework for low-energy, programmable, and reconfigurable wavefront modulation, laying a foundation for advancing next-generation mechanically programmable electromagnetic metamaterials.

Random metamaterials with double negative electromagnetic parameters in dense CuCr2Se4–CoCr2Se4 binary spinels

Jun Cao,Chengsheng Wang,Zechao Xu,Kelan Yan,Liming Shen,Zheng Huang,Lingjie Zhang,Runhua Fan,Ningzhong Bao

Metamaterials exhibiting simultaneous negative permittivity (ε < 0) and negative permeability (μ < 0) offer exceptional electromagnetic properties, enabling advanced applications such as subwavelength imaging, wireless power transfer, and advanced antenna systems. Chromium-based selenium spinel composites have emerged as promising candidates for random double-negative metamaterials (DNMs), although achieving tunable and desired double-negative characteristics remains challenging. Here, CoCr2Se4, distinguished by high magnetic spin resonance in high-frequency fields and low conductivity, was selected to modulate the electromagnetic properties of CuCr2Se4-based composites. A series of (1 − x)CuCr2Se4·xCoCr2Se4 samples were synthesized via a solid-state reaction. Double-negative properties were achieved in the MHz frequency ranges, specifically within 841–1000 MHz for x = 0.2, 638–1000 MHz for x = 0.4, and 484–1000 MHz for x = 0.6. The negative permittivity arises from the plasma oscillations of delocalized carriers, well described by the Drude model. Meanwhile, negative permeability is explained through the suppression of eddy currents–due to the low conductivity of CoCr2Se4-which mitigates skin-depth limitations and enhances magnetic resonance. This composite design not only reduces electromagnetic attenuation but also improves magnetic responsiveness under alternating fields. By clarifying the selection rationale for metallic ferromagnetic spinel composites, this work enhances the theoretical understanding and tuning mechanisms of negative ε and μ. It thereby broadens the scope of metamaterial research and facilitates the development of single-phase double-negative materials, especially for low-frequency near-field applications.

Cross-wavelength Hierarchical Metamaterials-Enabled SERS-Terahertz Dual-Modal Sensor for Multipesticide Detection

Lixin Ma,Ruiyun Zhou,Xiaonan Yang,Zijie Dai,Qian Xu,Yang Zhang,Chen Wang,Zhiming Guo,Yunxia Ye,Xiaobo Zou,Jianrong Cai

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique offers detailed chemical structure information on molecules and has been widely applied in the detection of chemical pesticide molecules. The molecular structures of different pesticides vary significantly, and their Raman scattering cross-sections are typically low and significantly different. The low concentrations of pesticide residues and the complexity of sample matrices often pose challenges for direct Raman detection. Especially in mixed pesticides, it is difficult for the SERS technology to obtain effective spectral information from molecules with lower Raman scattering cross-sections. Herein, a SERS-terahertz dual-modal sensor based on a carbon nanotubes/Au@Ag nanoparticles (CNTs/Au@AgNPs) cross-wavelength hierarchical metamaterial device was constructed. Unlike conventional single-signal enhancement devices, this sensor achieves synergistic enhancement of Raman and terahertz signals by integrating composite nanomaterials into one micronano-sensing chip, rationally arranging the terahertz local electric field enhancement region and Raman “hotspots.” Leveraging heterologous signal amplification, the sensor enables the effective detection of pesticide molecules through complementary information provided by Raman and terahertz spectroscopies and dual-modal signal enhancement. As a verification, the dual-modal device realizes the simultaneous detection of thiram and imidacloprid, and the limit of detection reaches 0.0149 and 0.0721 mg/kg, respectively. Additionally, the device can restore its sensing ability through simple washing and demonstrates good reusability. This integrated micronano-sensing device, comprising cross-wavelength hierarchical metamaterials, exhibits excellent sensing performance and offers a novel approach for multisubstance chemical analysis.

Decoupled and non-volatile prestress programming of tensegrity metamaterials enables persistent mechanical function

Xiaoming Yu,Meiling Zhang,Jianwei Sun,Chaozong Liu,Zhihui Zhang,Luquan Ren

Traditional programmable mechanical metamaterials are often fundamentally limited by their dependence on continuous external energy or manual intervention to sustain their tuned states, which constrains their autonomy and real-world viability. Inspired by the defensive behavior of the pufferfish, we introduce a tensegrity design that enables the decoupling of stimulus-triggered programming from fast, passive mechanical responses. We integrate stimulus-responsive hydrogels as programmable drivers with mortise-tenon joints that provide non-volatile mechanical memory, thereby enabling persistent storage of prestress within the material architecture. Once activated by ambient humidity, the prestress state and corresponding mechanical behavior, including bistable or monostable responses, are set, and no energy is needed to maintain the state over long periods. We demonstrate three proof-of-concept configurations—timed release, impact protection, and adaptive load bearing—on a unified tensegrity platform, establishing a “program once, function persistently” strategy for autonomous, energy-conserving smart materials.

Smart reconfigurable electromagnetic metamaterials based on thermadapt shape memory Poly(ethylene–vinyl acetate)

Haoyu Gu,Tong Lv,Qiankun Zhang,Dequan Chi,Yang Zhang,Zhongjun Cheng,Zhimin Xie,Yongjun Xu,Dongjie Zhang,Yuyan Liu

Smart reconfigurable metamaterials can better adapt to changing electromagnetic environments and broaden the range of applications. However, constructing electromagnetic reconfigurable metamaterials, especially those with large areas or applied to complex surfaces via a universal approach, is still a challenge. Here, we introduce a smart reconfigurable metamaterial consisting of a thermadapt shape memory polymer ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) matrix and a flowable liquid–metal resonant unit. Based on the excellent self-healing properties of EVA, large-area metamaterials can be constructed by thermal assembly of metamaterial units. In addition, the original shape of the metamaterial can be reprogrammed to apply to complex three-dimensional surfaces with the reprocessing properties of EVA. Moreover, by utilizing the shape memory performance of the EVA, the temporary resonant frequency of the metamaterial can be set by programming and the resonant frequency tuning of the metamaterial can be controlled under external temperature stimulation, achieving noncontact tuning. In the future, this concept can be broadly applied in fields such as complex structure stealth layers and multifunction filters.

4D printed zero Poisson’s ratio metamaterials with vibration isolation properties for magnetic response

Hongwei Yang,Shu Huang,Hang Zhang,Junhui Zhang,Jie Sheng,Feng Chen,Chen Wang,Chaoxu Liang,Bin Xue

Although mechanical metamaterials possess high specific energy absorption, they suffer from drawbacks such as irreversible deformations and non-adjustable mechanical properties. Magnetic excitation is considered to be one of the most promising methods for special working environments; for which uniform incorporation of UV-cured four-dimensional (4D) printed resin is considered to be an effective approach to achieving fine structural features. Our study investigated the impact of soft magnetic particle content on the mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties of a shape memory polymer matrix material. This paper presents a 4D printed metamaterial with a zero Poisson's ratio that can sense magnetic field intensity and alter its mechanical properties. Its rapid shape recovery, achieved through magnetic excitation, enables multiple energy absorption within a short timeframe. By increasing the curvature radius, the stress concentration in the hexagonal honeycomb structure is reduced, ensuring the metamaterial maintains its zero Poisson's ratio even under in-plane loading. The study investigates the energy absorption performance and force–displacement curve of metamaterials with different layers and cell sizes, focusing on a four-layer metamaterial for the analysis. Furthermore, the paper explores the tunable energy absorption characteristics of the four-layer metamaterial under time-varying electromagnetic fields, aiming to enhance the stability of a lander's center of gravity while landing on uneven terrain.

Tuning Metamaterials Nanostructure of Janus Gold Nanoparticle Film for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Yixuan Du,Wei Wei,Xiaowei Zhang,Yunbo Li

Large-area metamaterial nanostructures of a Janus gold nanoparticle (AuNP) film decorated with thiol-terminated polymers have been fabricated and tuned at an oil/water interface by a facile and innovative process. The results show that AuNPs had been arrayed with ultrasmall gaps between neighboring particles laminated with polymer which is called a Janus film. This film exhibits a sensitive property for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for determination of both hydrophilic methylene blue and hydrophobic thiram. The structure-dependent SERS of the Janus AuNP film has also been confirmed by a finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method.
