Natural molybdenite enables a eco-friendly superhydrophobic photothermal coating. • Phase-regulated 1T/2H-MoS 2 heterostructure enables highly efficient photothermal conversion. • The coating exhibits outstanding icephobicity, delaying ice formation for over 16 h at −15 °C. • The coating melts a 4-mm ice layer at −20 °C in 100 s, with near-complete evaporation within 180 s. • The coating withstands corrosion, extreme pH, and abrasion, showing high real-world applicability. In cold environments, ice accumulation poses infrastructure challenges, highlighting the need for advanced anti-icing and deicing technologies. Here, a photothermal superhydrophobic coating with hierarchical micro/nano structure was fabricated from natural molybdenite. Using (3–aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) as an intercalator, a mixed–phase MoS 2 heterostructure (M2–MoS 2 , 1T/2H) was obtained. Subsequent functionalization with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and epoxy resin (EP) yielded a robust bilayer coating, designated M2–MoS 2 @PDMS–EP/PDMS. The resulting coating exhibits excellent superhydrophobicity, with a water contact angle (WCA) of 150.8° and a sliding angle (SA) of 7.5°. At −15 ± 1 °C, it delays ice formation for 57,829 s, significantly outperforming conventional counterparts. Owing to broad-spectrum solar absorption and efficient photothermal conversion, the coating rapidly reaches 85.0 °C under 100 mW/cm 2 irradiation at a 0° tilt, while maintaining performance across various inclination angles. It also demonstrates rapid deicing capability, melting a 4 mm-thick ice layer at −20 ± 2 °C within 276 s under 100 mW/cm 2 illumination. Furthermore, the coating exhibits outstanding durability, retaining hydrophobic properties after exposure to saline, acidic, and alkaline environments, as well as ultrasonic vibration and mechanical wear tests. This study provides a cost-effective and sustainable strategy for designing high-performance anti-icing coatings based on natural mineral resources. A corn stalk-derived carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCQ) was successfully synthesized. • CMCQ achieved efficient flotation separation of molybdenite from talc. • CMCQ selectively adsorbed onto the talc surface and reduced its hydrophobicity. • CMCQ weakened basal-plane hydrophobic attraction for molybdenite-talc separation. Molybdenite (MoS 2 ) is a key mineral resource for molybdenum extraction, but its natural floatability is similar to that of the associated gangue mineral talc (Mg 3 Si 4 O 10 (OH)), making effective separation difficult. Conventional polymeric depressants, due to their high viscosity, tend to adsorb non‑selectively on both molybdenite and talc surfaces, resulting in a low grade of molybdenum. Hence, this study synthesized a corn stalk‑derived carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCQ) from low‑viscosity agricultural waste (corn stalk) and applied it for the first time to the flotation separation of molybdenite from talc. Through single-mineral flotation tests, adsorption analysis, contact angle measurements, Zeta potential measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), in situ optical microscope observation, and Extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (EDLVO) theory calculations, the depression performance and selective mechanism of CMCQ were systematically evaluated. The results show that CMCQ strongly depresses talc, with a talc recovery as low as 10.2% at a concentration of 100 mg/L, while its depression on molybdenite remains weak. Compared with commercial carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), CMCQ reduces talc recovery from over 60.0% to 10.2% at the same concentration, demonstrating a significantly improved depressing effect. Mechanistic studies reveal that CMCQ selectively adsorbs onto the talc surface, reduces its hydrophobicity, and weakens the hydrophobic attraction between the basal planes of molybdenite and talc. As a result, particle adhesion is largely eliminated, leading to efficient selective separation. This study not only facilitates the high-value utilization of corn straw but also provides a novel, efficient depressant for the flotation separation of molybdenite from talc, which is of great significance for promoting sustainable mineral processing technology. The very close natural floatability of molybdenite and talc has been traditionally believed as the main reason for their separation problem. However, the interactions between the basal and edge planes of the two platy minerals remain unclear. Here the hydrophobic attraction between the basal planes was proposed as the dominating factor for that problem. Flotation tests in both single and mixed mineral systems were conducted using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as talc depressant and sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) as molybdenite collector. Zeta potential distribution, contact angle, in situ optical microscope observation, EDLVO calculation and surface energy analysis were applied to reveal the surfacial actions between the basal and edge planes of molybdenite and talc. Molybdenite and talc showed obvious floatability difference in single mineral system, however, their separation efficiency met with big decline in mixed mineral system. Zeta potential results demonstrated that, in the presence of CMC and SIBX, negatively charged particles of molybdenite and talc aggregated rather than electrostatically repulsed and dispersed. The contact angle and particle adhesion results showed a certain degree of selective attraction between the basal planes of molybdenite and talc. The EDLVO calculation suggested the attractive interactions were ranked as: Mb(basal)-Tlc(edge) > Mb(basal)-Tlc(basal) ≈ Mb(edge)-Tlc(edge) > Mb(edge)-Tlc(basal). The surface energy calculation pointed out that the fundamental reason for the separation problem was exactly the hetero-hydrophobic attraction between their basal planes.

To enable the reuse of molybdenite flotation wastewater, it is necessary to degrade the residual flocculant polyacrylamide (PAM) to eliminate its inhibition on molybdenite floatability. This study adopted electrooxidation technology to degrade PAM and investigate its mechanism as well as its effect on restoring molybdenite flotation. Under optimized conditions (current density: 40 mA/cm², oxidation time: 60 min), the molybdenite recovery in the 10 ppm PAM system increased from 1 % to 96 %, with a total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency of 81.39 %. For the artificial mixed ore (molybdenite:quartz = 1:9), after treatment of the system containing 2.5 ppm PAM, the Mo recovery and grade increased from 17 %/10 % to 96 %/27 %, respectively. Characterizations via atomic force microscopy (AFM), contact angle measurement, and Zeta potential analysis confirmed that PAM forms a hydrophilic adsorption layer on the molybdenite surface via hydrogen bonding (evidenced by a contact angle decrease from 85° to 55°). In contrast, electrooxidation degraded PAM into short-chain fragments, reducing the PAM coverage on the molybdenite surface to 10.33 % and restoring the contact angle to 83°, thereby reconstructing hydrophobicity. The degradation pathway involves free radicals (·OH/·Cl/·ClO) attacking the PAM main chain to cause chain scission, generating small-molecule products containing alkenes and esters, which are ultimately mineralized into CO₂, H₂O, and NO₃⁻. This technology provides an efficient solution for flotation wastewater recycling and green mineral processing.

This study presents the application of dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) as a selective depressant for chalcopyrite in copper-molybdenum separation, with a systematic investigation of its mechanisms of action. Single-mineral flotation tests showed that under weakly alkaline conditions, DMSA demonstrated significant depressant effects on chalcopyrite, while having a minimal impact on the recovery of molybdenite. In artificial mixed ore tests at a DMSA dosage of 40 mg/L, the molybdenite concentrate achieved a grade of 59.86 % with a recovery of 83.04 %, while the chalcopyrite concentrate achieved a grade of 0.49 % and a recovery of only 1.18 %. Using multi-scale characterization techniques, including contact angle measurement, SEM-EDS, zeta potential analysis, LEIS, FTIR, and XPS, it was found that DMSA interacts with metal sites on the chalcopyrite surface via its -SH groups, forming a hydrophilic chelating complex. This complex prevents the adsorption of kerosene effectively. Molecular dynamics simulations further validated that DMSA enhances the density of water molecules on the chalcopyrite surface. DMSA therefore selectively depresses the flotation of chalcopyrite, enabling the efficient separation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite.

To efficiently enrich fine copper-molybdenum ore, a pioneering method was employed by utilizing MCO (trimethyl-pyridin) and kerosene as high-efficiency composite collectors in the flotation process. Micro-flotation and actual ore flotation tests demonstrated that the composite collector manifested superior collection capacity and selectivity compared to using a single collector. Furthermore, the inclusion of kerosene reduced collector consumption, thereby lowering overall reagent costs. TOC test results indicated that the composite collector possesses a high adsorption quantity on the mineral surface. Additionally, contact angle measurements demonstrated that the composite collector significantly enhanced the surface hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite and molybdenite. FT-IR, XPS, and ToF-SIMS analyses were conducted to investigate the adsorption mechanism. The results illustrated that MCO adsorbed to mineral surfaces by forming complexes with Cu atoms in chalcopyrite and Mo atoms in molybdenite, respectively. The primary interaction between kerosene and copper-molybdenum ore involved hydrophobic attraction with kerosene physically adhering to the mineral surface to form hydrophobic aggregates. Hence, this study presented an effective procedural approach for the flotation of fine copper-molybdenum ore.

In this study, low concentration of ferrous ions (Fe 2+ ) was added into natural molybdenite (MDN) activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process to degrade a typical azo dye, orange G (OG). It was found that the addition of Fe 2+ promoted OG degradation and simultaneously reduced the leaching of toxic Mo ions significantly. Further, the utilization efficiency of MDN was improved immensely, which was estimated from reuse experiment. MDN mainly acted as the reductant to promote cycling of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox couple through reducible sulfur and Mo(IV) on its surface. Sulfate radicals (SO 4 •- ), hydroxyl radical (•OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were verified as the main reactive oxygen species responsible for OG degradation by scavenging tests and electron paramagnetic resonance. Some experiment parameters, such as MDN dosage, Fe 2+ concentration, PMS concentration, initial solution pH and coexisting anion, all affected OG degradation efficiency. In a word, this work provides a new method of enhancing PMS activation by MDN using low concentration of Fe 2+ for degradation of organic pollutants in water. MDN was applied as an efficient co-catalyst for permonosulfate activation. The sulfur element on MDN surface was able to reduce generated Fe 3+ . , , and were responsible for the removal of OG in MDN/Fe 2+ /PMS system. The Fe 2+ was demonstrated to promote the reusability of MDN.

The effective separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite is a challenging job. In this work, an environmental-friendly reagent pectin was investigated as a novel molybdenite depressant in the flotation separation of Cu-Mo sulfides. The micro-flotation results indicated that pectin selectively depressed molybdenite, and satisfactory separation results were achieved using sodium butyl xanthate (SBX) as collector even in the presence of kerosene. The addition sequence of pectin and kerosene influenced the depression of molybdenite significantly but hardly affected the flotation of chalcopyrite. The pre-adsorption of kerosene prior to pectin on molybdenite surface slightly attenuated the depression effect, while the pre-adsorption of pectin before kerosene moderately diminished the depression effect. Zeta potential , contact angle and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) suggested that pectin was adsorbed on molybdenite and chalcopyrite surface mainly through hydrophobic interaction and electrostatic attraction, respectively. SBX replaced the adsorbed pectin from chalcopyrite surface and restored its hydrophobicity . However, SBX hardly adsorbed on pectin treated molybdenite and molybdenite surface maintained hydrophilic.

In this investigation, a chelating agent of amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) was introduced to eliminate the adverse effect of seawater in molybdenite flotation. Microflotation results presented that high flotation recovery of molybdenite was achieved in freshwater using kerosene as the collector, but it was significantly decreased in the presence of seawater when pH > 9.5. Among the main ions in seawater, magnesium and calcium ions played a more detrimental role than others. After the addition of ATMP, molybdenite floatability can restore in seawater. Zeta potential distribution and solution chemistry calculation results illustrated that the decreased molybdenite floatability was attributed to the interaction of positive Mg(OH) 2(s) (major) and CaOH + (minor) components with the molybdenite surface. The magnesium/calcium ions of positive components of Mg(OH) 2(s) and CaOH + interacted with the ionized species of ATMP and then produced ATMP-calcium/magnesium complex, leading to the electrostatic repulsion between molybdenite and ATMP-calcium/magnesium complex that was restoring the molybdenite flotation. Hence, the ATMP can be utilized as an appropriate reagent to improve molybdenite flotation in seawater.

The efficient separation of chalcopyrite from molybdenite is crucial for the utilization of copper–molybdenum ores and is inevitably influenced by the presence of metal ions in the pulp. However, the underlying impact mechanisms remain unclear. This study systematically investigated the influence of Cu2+on the flotation separation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite, with sodium thioglycolate (STG) as a depressant. Flotation experiments revealed that Cu2+in the STG system significantly reduced molybdenite recovery and hindered selective separation. Characterization using contact angle, zeta potential, and UV–Vis analysis demonstrated that the presence of Cu2+triggered STG adsorption on the molybdenite surface, thereby increasing its hydrophilicity. XPS analysis showed that Cu2+adsorbed onto the molybdenite surface as Cu(I), creating reactive sites for the –SH or –COO−groups in STG. This interaction forms a stable molybdenite–Cu(I)–STG complex through chemisorption, significantly suppressing molybdenite flotation. DFT calculations further demonstrated that Cu2+enhanced the reactivity between STG and molybdenite. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the influences of Cu2+on the flotation separation between chalcopyrite from molybdenite, providing valuable insights into further optimizing copper–molybdenum flotation separation processes.

The flotation of molybdenite particles smaller than 20 μm is inefficient primarily due to the reduction in overall hydrophobicity as particle size decreases. However, previous studies mainly focused on interfacial regulation of molybdenite faces or edges individually, resulting in unsatisfactory recovery and high collector consumption. In this work, an attempt was made to regulate the interfacial properties of both faces and edges synchronously to achieve highly efficient beneficiation of molybdenite fines utilizing a new compound collector consisting of emulsified kerosene and fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether phosphate (AEOP). The flotation results demonstrated that the compound collector was more superior than single collector in flotation, which promoted the flotation recovery greatly compared to emulsified kerosene or AEOP. In addition, the synergistic effect of kerosene and AEO-3P was much stronger than that of kerosene and AEO-9P. The results of zeta potential, electrochemical tests and scanning electron microscopy energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS) indicated that AEOP species preferentially adsorbed on edges, which enhanced the adsorption of emulsified kerosene droplets on edges via intermolecular interactions. Moreover, a portion of AEOP combined with kerosene droplets adsorbed on the molybdenite faces. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results suggested that the phosphoric acid groups in AEOP bonded with Mo sites on edges. The contact angle results further confirmed that the compound collector synergistically acted on both faces and edges to improve its hydrophobicity. This work provides an innovative perspective to design effective compound collector for the flotation of molybdenite fines in future.

The oxidation of molybdenite in water-oxygen system adversely affects the flotation recovery. However, previous studies primarily focused on the oxidation of MoS 2 edge surfaces, neglecting the oxidation of basal facets, which constitute a larger proportion of the overall surface area. In this work, we systematically investigated the oxidation behavior of the molybdenite base surface and explored the influence of base surface oxidation sites on flotation behavior. The results demonstrated that surface oxidation of molybdenite leaded to a negative surface potential, decreased hydrophobicity and reduced dodecane adsorption. Electrostatic potential (ESP) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that oxidation sites on the molybdenite surface exhibited a strong negative charge, enhancing the adsorption of water molecules while weakening kerosene adsorption. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations indicated that the oxidized molybdenite surface formed a hydration layer with thickness of ∼ 6 nm, which impedes dodecane adsorption. Moreover, this study proposed an effective strategy to improve molybdenite flotation recovery, that is reducing the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the pulp to inhibit MoS 2 oxidation. These findings provide new insights into the oxidation behavior of molybdenite, and contribute to a better understanding of its flotation behavior in pulp.
