In situ preparation of natamycin and trans-cinnamic acid loaded polycaprolactone/ethyl cellulose nanofibers on mangoes via handheld microfluidic-blow-spinning for freshness preservation

Xiaohong Guo,Menglu Wu,Shiguang Zou,Xuequn Shi,Saowapa Chaiwong,Di Wu,Xian Li,Kunsong Chen

Mangoes are nutritious but perishable fruits. The in situ packaging of fruit surfaces with nanofibers is a promising study for fruit preservation. Polycaprolactone/ethyl cellulose (PCL/EC) nanofibrous films loaded with natamycin (Nata) and trans-cinnamic acid (tCA) (PCL/EC/Nt-p) were prepared in situ on the surface of mangoes using handheld microfluidic-blow-spinning (MBS) to enhance mango storage quality. The results show that the PCL/EC/Nt-p nanofibers had an average diameter of 321.82 ± 10.06 nm and displayed a smooth and uniform morphology. The lower Young’s modulus facilitated easy peeling of the nanofibrous films from the mangoes surface with less force before consumption. In addition, the PCL/EC/Nt-p nanofibrous film had an ideal hydrophobicity and water vapor transmission rate, which protected their structural integrity in high-humidity environments and also reduced water loss from the treated mangoes. Storage results show that the mangoes treated with PCL/EC/Nt-p nanofibrous films exhibited the smallest lesion diameter and a decay index 20 % lower than untreated mango. Moreover, after 9 days of storage, the decrease in SOD, CAT, POD, and APX antioxidant enzyme activities was delayed in the PCL/EC/Nt-p nanofibrous film treated mangoes, confirming the film’s ability to enhance antioxidant capacity and slow down metabolic processes. This study provides valuable insights to facilitate the research on in situ fruit preservation packaging, the widespread adoption of microfluidic-blow-spinning and the handheld spinning machine.

Development of natamycin-loaded zein-casein composite nanoparticles by a pH-driven method and application to postharvest fungal control on peach against Monilinia fructicola

Xuejiao Xu,Xinlin Peng,Chen Huan,Jie Chen,Yuecheng Meng,Sheng Fang

This work fabricated natamycin-loaded zein-casein nanoparticles (N-Z/C NPs) by a pH-driven approach and applied to control postharvest peach brown rot caused by Monilinia fructicola . When casein and phosphoric acid were used as a stabilizer and neutralizing acid, respectively, NPs with mean particle sizes < 100 nm and zeta-potentials < −30 mV could be obtained. The NPs could increase the aqueous dispersibility of natamycin and showed high stability against environmental changes, which could be attributed to both hydrophobic stacking and hydrogen bonds between natamycin and zein. Besides, the effects of N-Z/C NPs on the storage of peach were assessed in vitro and in vivo . Nanoencapsulation did not affect the antifungal activities of natamycin. The NPs with 20 and 80 µg/mL of natamycin could basically inhibit the spore germination and mycelial growth of M. fructicola , respectively. The N-Z/C NPs coatings exhibited better results than natamycin in controlling of peach brown rot.

Effects of natamycin, hexanoic acid and Lactobacillus plantarum on fermentation, aerobic stability and in vitro digestibility of an ensiled total mixed ration containing water bamboo sheath leaves

Xinbao Li,Haopeng Liu,Tongtong Dai,Dong Dong,Guofeng Xu,Yushan Jia,Tao Shao

The work aimed to evaluate the effect of lactic acid bacteria, natamycin and hexanoic acid on the fermentation quality, aerobic stability and in vitro digestibility of total mixed ration (TMR) silages containing water bamboo sheath leaves. The treatments were as follows: (1) no additives (control, C), (2) lactic acid bacteria (L), (3) natamycin (N), (4) hexanoic acid (H), (5) lactic acid bacteria + natamycin (LN), (6) lactic acid bacteria + hexanoic acid (LH). Silos were opened and silages were evaluated to assess fermentation quality, aerobic stability and in vitro digestibility. All TMR silages were well-preserved as indicated by dominant lactic acid content, low ammonia nitrogen/total nitrogen, trace propionic acid and negligible butyric acid contents. All additives improved the fermentation quality and in vitro digestibility, evidenced by higher lactic acid/acetic acid ratio, lactic acid, acetic acid, water-soluble carbohydrate contents and lactic acid bacteria count, and lower pH, aerobic bacteria and yeast counts. The LN had the highest lactic acid, acetic acid, lactic acid/acetic acid ratio, in vitro gas production and in vitro digestibility. During aerobic exposure, the LN silage had the highest lactic acid and acetic acid contents, and the lowest pH among all TMR silages. The LN and LH prolonged aerobic stability, reaching 85.5 and 81.5 h, respectively. The LN is recommended to improve the fermentation quality, aerobic stability and in vitro digestibility of TMR prepared with water bamboo sheath leaves.

Innovative natural antimicrobial natamycin incorporated titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2)/ poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) /poly (lactic acid) (PLA) biodegradable active film (NTP@PLA) and application in grape preservation

Yanli Zheng,Xiaoyu Jia,Zhiyong Zhao,Yalin Ran,Meijun Du,Haiyu Ji,Yanfang Pan,Ziqin Li,Xiaowei Ma,Yue Liu,Lihua Duan,Xihong Li

Poly (butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT)/polylactic acid (PLA) blended with compatibilizers (polycaprolactone, PCL; poly (ethylene glycol), PEG; titanium dioxide, nano-TiO 2 ) ( [email protected] composites) were developed by melt processing. Natamycin incorporated into [email protected] blend composites formed [email protected] films, which exhibited high tensile strength (24.1–43.5 MPa) and elongation at break (85.8–258.2 %), and exhibited good oxygen permeability, water vapor permeability, surface hydrophobicity and biodegradability. The in vitro results revealed that inhibition of Penicillium expansum cell growth of the [email protected] films with addition of 1.0 wt% natamycin reached 95.72 %. The [email protected] film with natamycin effectively reduced incidence of decay (1.52 %) on grapes, maintained their quality, and inhibited the growth of pathogenic fungi to up to 0.42 log cfu·g −1 . This study generates new insights into the preservation properties of antimicrobial [email protected] film, which endow it with great application potential as a novel and eco-friendly packaging material for the food industry.

Development of novel magnetic solid phase extraction materials based on Fe3O4/SiO2/poly(acrylamide-N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide)-Pluronic L64 composite microspheres and their application to the enrichment of natamycin

Miaomiao Tian,Yongcun Zou,Shaoyan Zhou,Tianpeng Wang,Xueju Lv,Qiong Jia

Novel magnetic adsorbents based on Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 /poly(acrylamide- N , N' -methylene bisacrylamide) magnetic microspheres modified with non-ionic triblock copolymer surfactant were successfully prepared as a magnetic solid phase extraction adsorbent for the determination of trace natamycin in jam samples. The adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer, and X-ray diffractometer analysis, confirming that Pluronic L64 was effectively functionalized on the magnetic materials. Various experimental parameters affecting the extraction capacity were investigated including adsorbent amount, extraction time, desorption time, sample pH, and ionic strength. For recovery evaluations, the jam samples were spiked at two concentration levels of 100 and 200   μg   kg −1 of natamycin and the recovery values were in the range of 78.8–93.4%. The relative standard deviations (RSD) for the recoveries were less than 3.5%. The novel magnetic solid phase extraction method provided several advantages, such as simplicity, low environmental impact, convenient extraction procedure, and short analysis time when used for natamycin analysis.
