Compared with synthetic surfactants (cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate and Tween-80), the properties of the aqueous core as well as the microenvironment behavior were investigated in water-in-oil microemulsions, which are formed by water and biosurfactant rhamnolipid (RL) in the solvent of isooctane/n-hexanol (1:1, v/v ). Besides, as a typical substrate of lignocellulose, guaiacol was used to detect the laccase activity in reversed micelles (RMs). The results were eventually confirmed that RL-based RM system has higher solubilization ability, more friendly environmental compatibility and milder reaction microenvironment than the others. In this study, triangle phase diagram of surfactant/n-hexanol/isooctane/water was constructed to analyze the variation of phase behavior between each RM system. For the RL-based RM system, the effect of the molar ratio of water to surfactant ( ω 0 ) on enzyme hydrolytic activity was also determined to be shown as a bell-shaped curve and presented a maximum at ω 0 = 19; the O―H stretching vibrations of water in aqueous core was also studied by analyzing the IR spectrum over the region of 3050–3750 cm − 1 . Moreover, kinetic studies showed that the catalytic efficiency of the laccase in RL-based RM system was lower than in aqueous solution. Nevertheless, the RM system obtained the highest hydrolysis rate at RL concentration of 1.0CMC, which is 0.055 mM. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of rhamnolipid (RL) and ferric ions on the performance of a biotrickling filter (BTF) for the removal of gas-phase 1,2-dichlorobenzene ( o -DCB). A comprehensive investigation of microbial growth, pollutant solubility, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and enzymatic activity in o -DCB degradation by an isolated strain Bacillus cereus DL-1 with/without RL and Fe 3+ were carried out using batch microcosm experiments. In addition, o -DCB removal performance, biofilm morphology, and microbial community structures in two identical lab-scale biotrickling filters (named BTF1 and BTF2) inoculated with strain DL-1 were studied. The batch microcosm experiments demonstrated that 120 mg L −1 RL and 4 mg L −1 Fe 3+ could enhance the biodegradation of o -DCB, which may be due to promotion on bacterial growth, o -DCB solubilization , C 12 O enzyme activity , and polysaccharide (PS) and protein (PN) in EPS. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra indicated that the addition of RL with Fe 3+ had notable effects on the functional groups of PS and PN in EPS. The experimental results in BTFs indicate that the removal efficiency of o -DCB decreased from 100% to 56.4% for BTF1, which was not fed with RL and Fe 3+ , and from 100% to 80.3% for BTF2, which was fed with RL and Fe 3+ , when the inlet loading rate increased from 4.88 to 102 g m −3 h −1 at an empty bed residence time of 60 s. In addition, the microbial adhesive strength and the microbial community structure were different among both BTFs, highlighting the positive effects of RL and Fe 3+ .

Summary High internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) are potential carrier of fat-soluble nutrients due to their high loading capacity. This study, egg white protein particle (EWPP) and rhamnolipid (Rha) were used to co-emulsify oil/water HIPEs to carry curcumin (Cur). The results showed that, the Cur loading efficiency, microstructure, protein composition, molecular distribution of protein hydrolysates, protein interfacial adsorption rate and Cur bioavailability were measured. The results showed that, incorporation with Rha was unhelpful for improving loading efficiency of Cur, which decreased from 80.8% to 73.7% at pH 3.8 after incorporation with Rha, due to the decreased viscosity and destroyed continuous interface membrane, while beneficial for restricting coalescence of oil droplets. As studied, Rha could effectively reduce droplet size to slow down the speed of coalescence and form EWPP-Rha complex to inhibit proteolysis. Finally, Cur bioavailability in EWPP-Rha co-emulsified HIPE was the highest (40.3%), indicating the synergistic effect of EWPP and Rha promoting the effective adsorption of Cur, related to the increased coalescence stability during digestion and participation of Rha in the micellization reaction. In comparison, fibrous (pH 3.8) and granular (pH 7.0) EWPP stabilized HIPEs, showed no obvious difference in Cur bioavailability, due to the balance between interfacial adsorption ability and digestion resistance of EWPP with various morphology. This study has important significance for the construction of lipid soluble nutrient “carriers” with high load and high bioavailability.

This study explored the construction of egg white protein particles (EWPP) and/or rhamnolipid (Rha) based emulsion gels with β-sitosterol (Sit) as gelation factor. The properties of the emulsion gels and the application in cookies were investigated to further reveal the functional mechanism of each component. The rheological and microstructure results of the emulsions showed that emulsion gels had suitable plastic texture with lower melting rate and faster cooling rate compared with butter. EWPP stabilized the droplet while Rha reduced the droplet size and enhanced the fluidity of the emulsion gels. In cookie system, Sit in the emulsion gels provided the appropriate hardness and uniform matrix with emulsifiers. EWPP and Rha effectively improved the appearance, texture and mouthfeel of cookies and extended cookies’ frangibility during storage. The constructed composite emulsion gels showed promising potential as plastic fat substitutes, to be used in healthy bakery systems to decrease saturated fatty acids.

Surface-growing antibiotic-resistant pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus are emerging as a global health challenge due to dilemmas in clinical treatment. Furthermore, their pathogenesis, including increasingly serious antimicrobial resistance and biofilm formation, makes them challenging to treat by conventional therapy. Therefore, the development of novel antivirulence strategies will undoubtedly provide a path forward in combatting these resistant bacterial infections. In this regard, we developed novel biosurfactant-coated nanoparticles to combine the antiadhesive/antibiofilm properties of rhamnolipid (RHL)-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) with each of the p-coumaric acid (p-CoA) and gallic acid (GA) antimicrobial drugs by using the most available polymer common coatings (PVA) to expand the range of effective antibacterial drugs, as well as a mechanism for their synergistic effect via a simple method of preparation. Mechanistically, the average size of bare Fe3O4 NPs was ~15 nm, while RHL-coated Fe3O4@PVA@p-CoA/GA was about ~254 nm, with a drop in zeta potential from −18.7 mV to −34.3 mV, which helped increase stability. Our data show that RHL-Fe3O4@PVA@p-CoA/GA biosurfactant NPs can remarkably interfere with bacterial growth and significantly inhibited biofilm formation to more than 50% via downregulating IcaABCD and CsgBAC operons, which are responsible for slime layer formation and curli fimbriae production in S. aureus and E. coli, respectively. The novelty regarding the activity of RHL-Fe3O4@PVA@p-CoA/GA biosurfactant NPs reveals their potential effect as an alternative multitarget antivirulence candidate to minimize infection severity by inhibiting biofilm development. Therefore, they could be used in antibacterial coatings and wound dressings in the future.IMPORTANCE Antimicrobial resistance poses a great threat and challenge to humanity. Therefore, the search for alternative ways to target and eliminate microbes from plant, animal, and marine microorganisms is one of the world’s concerns today. Furthermore, the extraordinary capacity of S. aureus and E. coli to resist standard antibacterial drugs is the dilemma of all currently used remedies. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA) have become widespread, leading to no remedies being able to treat these threatening pathogens. The most widely recognized serotypes that cause severe foodborne illness are E. coli O157:H7, O26:H11, and O78:H10, and they display increasing antimicrobial resistance rates. Therefore, there is an urgent need for an effective therapy that has dual action to inhibit biofilm formation and decrease bacterial growth. In this study, the synthesized RHL-Fe3O4@PVA@p-CoA/GA biosurfactant NPs have interesting properties, making them excellent candidates for targeted drug delivery by inhibiting bacterial growth and downregulating biofilm-associated IcaABCD and CsgBAC gene loci.

Riceglutelin (RG)-rhamnolipids (Rha)-high-methoxyl pectin (HMP)/medium-methoxy pectin (MMP)/low-methoxy pectin (LMP) were used to attract self-assembled nanoparticles by electrostatic attraction, and the effects of pectin esterification degree and concentration on the characteristics of nanoparticles and the bioavailability of curcumin were evaluated. The minimum particle size and the highest encapsulation efficiency of the nanoparticles were at mass ratios of RG:HMP = 2:1, RG:MMP = 4:1, and RG:LMP = 2:1. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and circular dichroism spectroscopy show that hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interaction, and electrostatic attraction are the main driving forces for the formation of complexes. The X-ray diffraction results verified that the curcumin in the complex was in an amorphous state. In addition, curcumin embedded with nanoparticles has good photothermal and storage stability. The results of in vitro simulated digestion showed that nanoparticles constructed from LMP had high bioaccessibility. The results of this study are expected to provide new ideas for improving the bioaccessibility of curcumin.

The surfactant rhamnolipid (RL) was used to modify the liposomes. β-carotene (βC) and rutinoside (Rts) were utilized to generate co-encapsulated liposomes through an ethanol injection method that used both hydrophilic and hydrophobic cavities to fabricate a novel cholesterol-free composite delivery system. The RL complex-liposomes loaded with βC and Rts (RL–βC–Rts) showed higher loading efficiency and good physicochemical properties (size = 167.48 nm, zeta-potential = −5.71 mV, and polydispersity index = 0.23). Compared with other samples, the RL–βC–Rts showed better antioxidant activities and antibacterial ability. Moreover, dependable stability was uncovered in RL–βC–Rts with still 85.2% of βC storage from nanoliposome after 30 days at 4°C. Furthermore, in simulated gastrointestinal digestion, βC exhibited good release kinetic properties. The present study demonstrated that liposomes constructed from RLs offer a promising avenue for the design of multicomponent nutrient delivery systems using both hydrophilic.

Copper pollution in global water resources is becoming increasingly severe, posing a serious threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems. In this paper, two chitosan (CS)–rhamnolipid (RL)–hydrotalcite-like compound (HTlc) composites, designated as CS@(RL-HTlc) and (RL-HTlc)/CS, were synthesized using two distinct methods: emulsion crosslinking–coprecipitation–ion exchange and coprecipitation–ion exchange–emulsion crosslinking, respectively, to investigate their adsorption properties for Cu(II) ions. Characterization revealed that the CS@(RL-HTlc) composite possessed a crosslinked CS core with an RL-HTlc shell structure, while the (RL-HTlc)/CS microsphere exhibited a porous structure with a rough surface. The adsorption properties of these composites for Cu(II) ions were thoroughly investigated and exhibited significantly enhanced adsorption performances due to the synergistic effect between CS and RL-HTlc. Specifically, the coordination of Cu(II) ions with N/O-containing functional groups and the isomorphous substitution of Mg(II) by Cu(II) ions within the HTlc layers. Additionally, the surface-induced precipitation of Cu(OH) 2 was identified as another adsorption mechanism for CS@(RL-HTlc). Interestingly, the (RL-HTlc)/CS composite, with a larger specific surface area and a lower isoelectric point, exhibited a higher adsorption capacity compared to CS@(RL-HTlc). Moreover, (RL-HTlc)/CS outperformed CS@(RL-HTlc) as a more suitable candidate for repeated use in wastewater treatment.
