Mechanochemical conversion of chrysotile asbestos tailing into struvite for full elements utilization as citric-acid soluble fertilizer

Yonghao Tan,Zhemin Zou,Jun Qu,Jie Ren,Chenjie Wu,Zhigao Xu

Chrysotile asbestos tailing (CAT) are rich in magnesium and silicon which are of great value for crop growth. In this work, CAT was transformed to struvite and silicate salt for the first time by one-step milling with phosphates (NH 4 H 2 PO 4 , (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4, KH 2 PO 4 and CaHPO 4 ) for full elements utilization as citric acid soluble fertilizer (CASF). The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the obtained samples. The nutrients release data revealed that CAT milling with (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 and CaHPO 4 was optimal for the production of Mg, N, P, and Si compound CASF which released 0% Mg, 9.37% N, 2.02% P, and 9.86% Si in water and 94.54% Mg, 96.79% N, 96.97% P, and 14.02% Si in 2% citric acid. The prepared product held the nutrients by the mechanism of struvite crystallization in water and released the nutrients by acid-dissolution in citric acid solution. Techno-economic analysis proved the feasibility and economic value of the CASF produced by the proposed mechanochemical approach. This facile and environmentally friendly process would surely contribute to the improvement of resource utilization efficiency and create a sustainable and environmental friendly agricultural production system.

Fire Extinguishing Performance of Chemically Bonded Struvite Ceramic Powder with High Heat-Absorbing and Flame Retardant Properties

Zilong Liang,Zhiji Zhou,Yunqi Sun,Yujia Huang,Xinya Guo,Guoshuai Cai,Mingchao Wang,Haijun Zhang

Struvite is a chemically bonded ceramic product in the pipeline of a sewage treatment plant. In order to explore the fire extinguishing potential of struvite, a new type of struvite ultrafine dry powder with excellent performance was prepared by a simple process, and its fire extinguishing performance and mechanism were analyzed in depth. Under the same process conditions, the refinement degree (D50 = 5.132 μm) and the specific surface area (BET = 25.72 m2/g) of ultrafine struvite were larger than those of NH4H2PO4(D50 = 8.961 μm, BET = 13.64 m2/g), making struvite more suitable for fire extinguishing. Besides, the pyrolysis process of struvite was relatively concentrated and absorbed more heat in a short time. Its heat absorption (458.4 J/mg) was higher than that of NH4H2PO4(156.4 J/mg). Water, ammonia, and PO· were released during the pyrolysis of struvite, which effectively reduced fire temperature, diluted oxygen concentrations and captured free radicals. At the same time, the final products were magnesium orthophosphate and magnesium pyrophosphate, which formed a dense flame-retardant ceramic layer with good thermal insulation and environmental protection functions. In these cases, the fire extinguishing mechanism of struvite was determined to have three stages: the cooling effect, the asphyxiation effect, and the chemical effect. Correspondingly, the fire extinguishing time of struvite was three seconds faster than that of ammonium phosphate under 0.2 MPa based on the local oil basin test. Keywords:chemically bonded ceramic;struvite;recycling;ultrafine powder;fire extinguishing performance

Effects of co-existing substances on phosphorus recovery from swine wastewater via struvite crystallization with a carbon felt cathode

Ying Xiang,Weike Lin,Shuoshi Guo,Jinfeng Wei,Peng Li,Jin Li,Fang Wang

Swine wastewater contributes significantly to environmental pollution, while non-renewable phosphate rock reserves are rapidly depleting. Addressing these issues requires the development of advanced recovery technologies capable of reducing eutrophication and promoting circular phosphorus utilization. Electrochemical struvite crystallization offers a viable strategy, particularly when integrated with economical carbon felt cathodes, to replace traditional, more expensive materials. However, P recovery is often significantly compromised by the presence of complex co-existing substances in swine wastewater. This challenge motivated the current investigation of their specific effects on a carbon felt cathode-based struvite crystallization system. Single-factor experiments revealed that co-existing substances significantly inhibited phosphate recovery. Among the co-existing inorganic cations, Ca 2+ and Fe 3+ exhibited significantly stronger inhibitory effects on phosphate recovery compared to that of Na + . For the co-existing organics, sodium propionate, glutamic acid, and sodium humate exhibited significantly stronger inhibitory effects on phosphate recovery compared with starch and tetracycline. For swine wastewater, the phosphate recovery rate was 78.39%, and the recovered substance was struvite. The insights gained are crucial for optimizing the design and operation of robust and highly efficient electrochemical P recovery systems for practical swine wastewater treatment.

Mechanochemical Activation of Antigorite to Provide Magnesium and Hydroxide Ions for Recovering Phosphorus and Nitrogen from Wastewater as Struvite

Xiaowen Zhou,Chuanqi Zhang,Yucheng Liu,Kaibo Hu,Chonggang Wang,Xuewei Li

Phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) can be simultaneously recovered by struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O) crystallization, and this has attracted more and more attention. However, the cost of producing struvite from wastewater is high due to the chemical inputs, which makes the struvite process unattractive in terms of economic benefits. Thus, it is important to develop a new struvite technology with low cost and simple operation. In this work, the antigorite was activated by a ball-milling process. The crystal form of the antigorite was destroyed by the mechanical forces, leading an increase in the dissolution of Mg2+ and OH− in the structure. The concentration of Mg2+ dissolved into water increases with the milling time, as well as the pH. Additionally, the dissolution of the activated antigorite depends on the concentration of phosphate-ammonium. The responsive dissolution makes the activated antigorite adaptively adjust the dissolution of Mg2+ and OH− and maintain a stable recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater. The performance of P and N recovery was investigated by moderating variables, including the molar ratio of N/P, activation time, reaction time, and dosage. The results showed that the activated antigorite in the wastewater can be automatically converted into struvite. Actual swine wastewater was treated by the activated antigorite process, and a recovery rate of 98% was achieved by adding 1.2  g/L activated antigorite. The economic evaluation shows that the cost of the activated antigorite process is only 36% of an ordinary chemical process (MgSO4 and NaOH).

Fabrication of Pd/Mg2P2O7 via a Struvite-Template Way from Wastewater and Application as Chemoselective Catalyst in Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes

Peng Zhang,Shaonan Xu,Yan Wang,Wei Zhang,Wenqing Li,Cundi Wei,Peiping Zhang,Shiding Miao

Graphical One man‘s trash is another man‘s treasure : A novel template strategy allows fibrous struvite—a composite Pd/Mg 2 P 2 O 7 with a mesoporous structure and an ultrahigh surface area—to be synthesized from wastewater. The prepared Pd/Mg 2 P 2 O 7 nanowires showed excellent performance in the selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzenes. This strategy provided a new pathway for synthesizing highly efficient catalysts as well as a solution for alleviate eutrophic pollution caused by N- and P-containing substances in wastewater. A highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst Pd/Mg 2 P 2 O 7 was fabricated by combining palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) and mesoporous Mg 2 P 2 O 7 fibers/rods. Mg 2 P 2 O 7 fibers with ultra-high specific surface area were prepared from struvite as templates, which were synthesized from waste water containing N- and P-containing pollutants. This strategy provided a novel pathway for developing advanced catalysts from eutrophication-polluted water. The composite Pd/Mg 2 P 2 O 7 showed brilliant performance in selective hydrogenation of nitro aromatics to give anilines. As an example of nitrobenzene hydrogenation, the conversion to aniline and selectivity were found to reach almost 100 % at a temperature of T =90 °C and under a pressure of P =2.0 MPa. The superior performance was found to originate from PdNPs, which were boosted by electron transfer afforded by the nanofiber Mg 2 P 2 O 7 supports. The favorable adsorption of withdrawing groups (−NO 2 ) was realized by synergistic effects between Pd and oxygen vacancies provided by pyrolysis of struvite. The catalyst remained stable after cycles of reuse with little degradation in catalytic performance.

Struvite crystallization by using active serpentine: An innovative application for the economical and efficient recovery of phosphorus from black water

Xuewei Li,Xu Zhao,Juanjuan Zhang,Jingwei Hao,Qiwu Zhang

Recovery of phosphorus from wastewater through struvite crystallization is one of the most attractive methods. However, the cost of chemical consumption makes this technology is unattractive to some extent. In this work, highly active serpentine was prepared by one-step mechanical activation and then used to recover phosphate as struvite from the black water containing 132.8 mg/L phosphorus and 3144 mg/L ammonia nitrogen. The results indicated that the prepared active serpentine can release magnesium ions and hydroxide ions simultaneously into an aqueous solution and is an ideal raw material for struvite crystallization. The factors for phosphorus recovery in this process mainly include mechanical activation intensity, serpentine dosage, and contact time. For the actual black water, a high recovery rate of phosphorus (>98%) is achieved by using active serpentine as the magnesium and alkali source for struvite precipitation. The recovery product was identified as struvite with a median particle size of 32.96 μm. It was confirmed that the mechanical activation damaged the crystal structure of the raw serpentine, improving the activity of Mg 2+ and OH − . The undissolved Si-containing particles act as crystal seeds, accelerating the struvite crystallization process. Furthermore, a pilot-scale test was conducted with a rural public toilet in Xiong'an New District, Hebei Province. The results showed that an acceptable phosphorus recovery (98%) could be achieved using active serpentine. Additionally, it was demonstrated that the serpentine process to recover phosphate as struvite reduced the cost by 54.4% in compared with an ordinary chemical process. The active serpentine is a promising dual source of magnesium and alkali for the phosphorus recovery by the struvite method. It has a potential prospect for the large-scale application in phosphorus recovery and struvite fertilizer production.

Biochar-seeded struvite precipitation for simultaneous nutrient recovery and chemical oxygen demand removal in leachate: From laboratory to pilot scale

Wang Saier,Sun Kechun,Xiang Huiming,Zhao Zhiqiang,Shi Ying,Su Lianghu,Tan Chaoqun,Zhang Longjiang

Refuse transfer station (RTS) leachate treatment call for efficient methods to increase nutrient recovery (NH4+−N and PO43−−P) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. In this study, the effects of various operational factors (seeding dose, pH, initial NH4+-N concentration, and reaction time) on biochar-seeded struvite precipitation were investigated at laboratory and pilot scales. Mealworm frass biochar (MFB) and corn stover biochar (CSB) were used as seeding materials to compare with traditional seed struvite. The maximum NH4+−N and PO43−−P recover efficiency of the MFB-seeded process reached 85.4 and 97.5%, higher than non-seeded (78.5 and 88.0%) and CSB-seeded (80.5 and 92.0%) processes and close to the struvite-seeded (84.5 and 95.1%) process. The MFB-seeded process also exhibited higher COD removal capacity (46.4%) compared to CSB-seeded (35.9%) and struvite-seeded (31.2%) processes and increased the average particle size of the struvite product from 33.7 to 70.2 μm for better sustained release. XRD, FT-IR, and SEM confirmed the orthorhombic crystal structure with organic matter attached to the struvite product. A pilot-scale test was further carried out in a custom-designed stirred tank reactor (20 L). In the pilot-scale test, the MFB-seeded process still spectacularly recovered 77.9% of NH4+−N and 96.1% of PO43−−P with 42.1% COD removal, which was slightly lower than the laboratory test due to insufficient and uniform agitation. On the whole, MFB-seeded struvite precipitation is considered to be a promising pretreatment method for rural RTS leachate.

Simultaneous recovery of ammonium and phosphate from aqueous solutions using Mg/Fe modified NaY zeolite: Integration between adsorption and struvite precipitation

Zhenwei Lu,Keqiang Zhang,Fuyuan Liu,Xingliang Gao,Zhongwei Zhai,Jiajia Li,Lianzhu Du

Currently, the closure of the nutrient circular loop and contaminant removal from wastewater are drawing widespread attention. In this study, a novel MgO/iron oxide-modified NaY zeolite (MNZ) was prepared and used for the integration of adsorption and struvite precipitation to simultaneously reclaim ammonium and phosphate from wastewater. The results proved that MgO and iron oxide nanoparticles were successfully embedded in the zeolite matrix, providing high adsorption performance for ammonium and phosphate, reaching 380.02 (as NH + 4) and 324.68 (as P T ) mg/g, respectively. The presence of NO 3 −  , Cl − , SO 4 2− , and HCO 3 − did not significantly influence the adsorption of ammonium and phosphate. Struvite precipitation on the MNZ surface is the primary mechanism for the recovery of both ammonium and phosphate with electrostatic attraction and ion exchange also involved in ammonium uptake. These results indicate that optimized MNZ is promising for nutrient recovery from wastewater because of its high selectivity for targeted absorbates and its potential application as a slow-release eco-fertilizer.

Facile fabrication of thermo-responsive/low-fouling zwitterionic hydrogels encapsulating hydrous zirconium oxide for phosphorus recovery as struvite from real wastewater

Zihao Chen,Huayong Luo,Baiyou Liu,Chen Gong,Juexi Zeng,Shida Pan,Jingjun Huo,Weijia Luo,Hongwei Rong

Hydrogel materials have garnered significant attention for the removal and recovery of phosphorus (P) from wastewater owing to their rapid reactivity, operational ease, and straightforward recovery process. Herein, thermo-responsive/low-fouling poly(sulfobetain methacrylate) (PSBMA) hydrogels encapsulating hydrous zirconium oxide (PSBMA-HZO) were prepared by a simple and efficient approach for the selective enrichment of P from wastewater, subsequently integrated with the electrochemically-driven struvite precipitation (ESP) process for P recovery as struvite. The PSBMA-HZO hydrogels were investigated using TEM, SEM-EDS, XRD, FTIR, swelling kinetics, mechanical strength testing, TGA, and XPS studies. The adsorption studies demonstrated that the composite hydrogels exhibited significant selectivity for P removal, affording a maximum adsorption capacity of 35.54 mg P/g at pH 2 and 25 °C. Additionally, the thermos-responsive characteristic of PSBMA-HZO hydrogels had been demonstrated to enhance the adsorption/desorption capabilities over ten cycles of regeneration studies. Moreover, the composite hydrogels exhibited remarkable reusability and antifouling properties. The adsorption mechanisms may encompass electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange and Lewis acid-base interactions. Results from P recovery tests using real wastewater indicated that a P-enriched eluate (88.95 mg P/L) was yielded following five adsorption–desorption cycles when the composite hydrogels were applied in the pretreated anaerobic digestion effluent (129.07 mg P/L) with a high concentration of organics. The precipitated products obtained from the eluate via ESP contained struvite with a purity of 65.3 %. This study revealed that the PSBMA-HZO-facilitated adsorption/desorption in conjunction with ESP can serve as a viable method for recovering P resources as struvite products for practical applications.

Influences of changes in pH, temperature, and particle size on surface reaction resistance and diffusion resistance in the struvite dissolution process

Guangyuan Chen,Meng Zhang,Tong Zhou,Zhongxiang Ding,Haiying Tang,Yuanhui Ji,Changsong Wang

Struvite (MgNH 4 PO 4 ·6 H 2 O,MAP), a type of high-quality, slow-release fertilizer, is the main component of urinary stones in animals and humans and causes scale formation in industrial pipes. Therefore, MAP dissolution is an important research topic. Herein, MAP dissolution experiments are performed and a thermodynamic model is developed to evaluate the influences of pH, temperature ( T ), and particle size ( P s ) on surface reaction resistance ( 1/k s ) and diffusion resistance ( 1/k d ). The results show that MAP solubility decreases with an increase in pH and the effects of pH change are more obvious than those of T or P s . The total resistance ( 1/k T ) of MAP dissolution increases with pH increase, P s growth, or T reduction. The comparison of 1/k s and 1/k d reveals surface reaction as the MAP dissolution control step and indicates a linear relation among 1/k s , 1/k d , and the natural logarithm of P s at pH 7.0.

Tailoring pore size to enhance dissolution of layered double oxides for efficient nitrogen and phosphorus recovery via crystallization of struvite from wastewater

Changjin Guo,Yinghao Xu,Congcong Ni,Xiaofan Pan,Leonard D. Tijing,Ho Kyong Shon,Ning Deng,Xin Huang

Nitrogen and phosphorus recovery from wastewater to produce struvite fertilizer can simultaneously alleviate water eutrophication and phosphorus scarcity. Coupled magnesium mineral dissolution and reprecipitation has been emphasized for struvite formation by avoiding excessive Mg salts addition and pH adjustment. However, the recovery efficiency is limited by the low solubility of magnesium mineral. Herein, we capitalized on the concept of “pore-size controlled solubility (PCS)” to enhance the dissolution of MgAl-layered double oxide (MgAl-LDO), where dissolution rate is inversely related to pore size. By reducing the pore size of LDO X from 9.2 to 5.5 nm, the magnesium release from LDO X dissolution increased from 64.0 to 99.0 mg/L, accompanied by OH − release to maintain an alkaline condition. This resulted in effective recovery of NH 4 -N (80.54%) and PO 4 -P (80.57%) as high-purity struvite. Scanning electron microscope revealed that LDO acted as seeded surfaces that significantly reduced struvite nucleation barrier by controlling local supersaturation and interfacial energy. Moreover, the recovery is stable across wide pH ranges (5.0–10.0), attributable to the buffering capacity of Al in LDO X . Finally, the feasibility of NH 4 -N and PO 4 -P recovery was successfully applied to real aquaculture wastewater. This study offers an effective strategy to enhance mineral dissolution-precipitation for resource recovery.

Multi-step purification of electrolytic manganese residue leachate using hydroxide sedimentation, struvite precipitation, chlorination and coagulation: Advanced removal of manganese, ammonium, and phosphate

Yuanxuan Chen,Jianyou Long,Sihao Chen,Yuan Xie,Zhengfan Xu,Zengping Ning,Gaosheng Zhang,Tangfu Xiao,Mingxia Yu,Yanyang Ke,Lihu Peng,Huosheng Li

Water pollution caused by the release of manganese (Mn 2+ ) and ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) from electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) generated from industrial activities poses a serious threat to ecosystems and human health. In this study, an integrated process consisting sequentially of hydroxide sedimentation, struvite precipitation, breakpoint chlorination, and ferric chloride coagulation was optimized to remove Mn 2+ and NH 4 + -N from EMR leachate, and to address the issue of residual orthophosphate caused by struvite precipitation. The precipitates were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analyses. Results show that Mn 2+ ions and the resulting chemical oxygen demand (COD) were mainly removed using hydroxide precipitation at a sedimentation pH of 10.2, with poor-crystalline manganese hydroxide as the main precipitate. NH 4 + -N was primarily removed and recovered using struvite precipitation with well crystalline struvite as the main product, and then further eliminated using breakpoint chlorination. The residual orthophosphate introduced by struvite precipitation is successfully removed with ferric coagulation, and the effluent pH (7.5) is also lowered to discharge limits by means of hydrolysis of ferric coagulant. The concentration of COD, Mn 2+ , NH 4 + -N, and orthophosphate concentrations in the final effluent were 30.52 ± 9.38, 0.026 ± 0.013, 0.87 ± 0.01, and 0.06 ± 0.002 mg/L, respectively, meeting all local discharge standards. This combined process has robust pollutant removal efficiency, high resource recovery potential and few environmental constraints; thus, it is recommended as a potential solution for the treatment of Mn 2+ - and NH 4 + -N-rich acid mine drainage .
