Thermo-oxidative aging and strain softening would cause irreversible structural changes in the rubber composites accompanied by degradation of properties and eventual failure. Herein a novel strategy using black talc (BT) as filler is attempted for addressing the two long-standing issues by systematical regulation of vulcanization kinetics, crosslinking density, mechanical properties and thermal-oxygen stability of natural rubber (NR) composites. The results show that, for the composites with filler of 50 parts per hundred parts of rubber, the retentions of strain at break and tensile strength of the NR/BT composite after thermo-oxidative aging at 100 °C for 48 h are 93.6 % and 96.8 %, being superior to those of the composites filled with traditional fillers like carbon black (CB, 64.5 % and 50.0 %), silica (36.7 % and 53.6 %) and talc (82.8 % and 57.9 %). In comparison with CB and silica, BT can also weaken the damping and softening behaviors accompanying the Mullins effect during cyclic stretching and weaken Payne effect during large amplitude oscillation shear. It is suggested that the graphite-like carbon in BT is able to improve filler-rubber interfacial interaction and decrease the concentration of peroxyl radicals generated by NR aging while the MgO and SiO 2 components in BT play an important role in improving thermo-oxidative aging resistance. The findings pave the way to extend potential applications of BT resource and prolong the service life of NR products in an environmentally sustainable way.

Ionogels composed of solid matrices and ionic liquids are promising candidates as solid-state electrolytes for sodium (Na) metal batteries due to their nonflammability, high thermal stability, and desirable electrochemical and interfacial properties. Among various solid matrices, nanoscale materials are particularly attractive for increasing the mechanical modulus of ionogel electrolytes, contributing to the suppression of Na dendrite growth on metal anodes. However, the mechanistic understanding of this suppression remains limited. Here, size-controlled talc nanosheets are introduced as solid matrices to investigate their influence on the ionogel modulus and the corresponding Na dendrite growth behavior, facilitating the rational design of ionogel electrolytes for dendrite suppression. Talc nanosheets with reduced lateral dimensions and thicknesses provide larger surface areas, enhancing the ionogel modulus through stronger immobilization of ionic liquids. High-modulus ionogels with smaller nanosheets promote uniform Na deposition and reinforce the resistance of the electrolytes to vertical Na dendrite growth. Moreover, smaller talc nanosheets improve the Na-ion transference number of ionogel electrolytes. The resulting talc nanosheet ionogel electrolytes enable Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 |Na cells to exhibit favorable rate capability at room temperature with capacity retention over 99% after 500 cycles at a rate of 0.5 C.

In this paper, the effect of Tannic acid (TA), a green, biodegradable plant polyphenol, as a talc depressant on the separation behavior of talc and chalcopyrite was investigated. The results of micro-flotation studies revealed that at a TA dosage of 20 mg/L at pH 7, talc recovery was barely 10 % whereas chalcopyrite recovery remained above 90 %, indicating that TA can selectively depress talc flotation. The results of the artificial mixed minerals test further confirmed the depressive effect of TA. The adsorption results showed that the adsorption density of TA on talc was greater than that on chalcopyrite surface. Similar conclusions were observed in zeta potential tests. It is noteworthy that the zeta potential of the chalcopyrite treated with TA and butyl xanthate sodium continued to shift negatively in comparison to the zeta potential of chalcopyrite treated with TA alone, suggesting that butyl xanthate sodium can continue to adsorb on the surface of chalcopyrite following TA treatment. Besides, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy tests concluded that TA adsorbs on talc surface by physical (hydrophobic) interaction. Differences in the crystal structures of chalcopyrite and talc, as well as the large number of phenolic hydroxyl structures contained in TA, are the main driving forces for the selective adsorption of TA on the talc surface. This work provides an insight to the selection of inhibitors for the separation of chalcopyrite and talc, particularly from the perspective of the hydrophobic effect of the talc layered structure.

The effective recovery of talc-bearing molybdenum ores has been a research hotspot in the field of minerals processing, which is mainly attributed to the similarity of the physical and chemical properties of talc and molybdenite, especially floatability, which presents a challenge in the separation of the two during the beneficiation process. Herein, the coordination affinity, differentiated adsorption configurations, adsorption morphology, and bonding mechanisms of a polysaccharide-based depressant, carboxymethyl starch (CMS), on the layered hydrophobic minerals molybdenite and talc have been compared and its special use in flotation was investigated by various advanced techniques, including density functional theory (DFT) simulation, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The CMS adsorption on the talc surface was more affinitive than that of molybdenite and it is possible to achieve the selective separation of laminar hydrophobic minerals molybdenite and talc through the utilization of differential wettability. Flotation kinetics with 400 mg/L CMS as a depressant and 3*10 −3 mol/L sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) as a collector has highlighted the importance of the mineral particle sizes that the better depressant activity of CMS on the coarse-grained talc surface in comparison to that of molybdenite is attributed to the greater adsorption energy and more homogeneous adsorption morphology of CMS on the talc basal surface which is the dominant surface affecting the floatability.

N -methyl-morpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) was initially created as a plasticizer for starch to produce thermoplastic wheat starch . Subsequently, talc powder was used as a reinforcing filler to enhance the mechanical strength of thermoplastic biomass-based composite plastics. The chemical structure , crystal structure, and microscopic morphology were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy . Additionally, the thermal properties were explored through thermogravimetric analysis , differential scanning calorimetry , and dynamic mechanical analysis . The hydrated NMMO plasticizer demonstrated an outstanding plasticizing effect on starch, resulting in a composite with remarkable mechanical properties. In fact, the pure thermoplastic wheat starch plasticized with hydrated NMMO exhibited the highest mechanical strength recorded so far, with a tensile strength of up to 9.4 MPa. In addition, talcum powder displayed a noticeable reinforcing effect. When the talcum powder content reached 30 wt%, the targeted composite achieved a tensile strength of 20.5 MPa and a Young's modulus of 177.9 MPa. These values were 118 % and 48 % higher, respectively, than those of the pure thermoplastic starch sample. This innovative plasticizing method opens up a new avenue for the development of high-mechanical-strength thermoplastic biomass-based composite plastics with promising potential applications.

Emodin (EM) was innovatively employed as a selective depressant for the flotation separation of chalcopyrite from talc. • EM exhibited significantly stronger adsorption on talc than on chalcopyrite. • EM selectively hindered PAX adsorption on talc while scarcely affecting chalcopyrite. • EM formed stronger Mg–O interactions on talc than Fe–O interactions on chalcopyrite. Talc and chalcopyrite both exhibit inherently high floatability, making their selective flotation separation particularly challenging. Therefore, the development of environmentally friendly depressants with high selectivity is essential for the efficient utilization of copper resources. In this study, the natural product emodin (EM) was employed as a novel green depressant for the flotation separation of chalcopyrite from talc. Under the optimum flotation conditions, EM effectively depressed talc flotation while exerting only limited influence on chalcopyrite, resulting in a recovery difference of 85.01 %age points between the two minerals. Artificial mixed-mineral flotation further confirmed the excellent separation performance, achieving a chalcopyrite recovery of 98.14% and a copper separation efficiency of 94.49%. Contact angle and zeta potential analyses demonstrated that EM effectively depressed talc flotation while exerting a limited influence on chalcopyrite flotation under potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) conditions. Microcalorimetry, XPS, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed that EM exhibited a much stronger affinity toward talc, preferentially forming stable Mg–O interactions with Mg active sites, whereas only relatively weaker Fe–O interactions were established on chalcopyrite. Collectively, these findings elucidate the molecular-level selective depression mechanism of EM toward talc, providing a theoretical basis for the efficient flotation separation of chalcopyrite from talc and the development of environmentally friendly flotation depressants. A corn stalk-derived carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCQ) was successfully synthesized. • CMCQ achieved efficient flotation separation of molybdenite from talc. • CMCQ selectively adsorbed onto the talc surface and reduced its hydrophobicity. • CMCQ weakened basal-plane hydrophobic attraction for molybdenite-talc separation. Molybdenite (MoS 2 ) is a key mineral resource for molybdenum extraction, but its natural floatability is similar to that of the associated gangue mineral talc (Mg 3 Si 4 O 10 (OH)), making effective separation difficult. Conventional polymeric depressants, due to their high viscosity, tend to adsorb non‑selectively on both molybdenite and talc surfaces, resulting in a low grade of molybdenum. Hence, this study synthesized a corn stalk‑derived carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCQ) from low‑viscosity agricultural waste (corn stalk) and applied it for the first time to the flotation separation of molybdenite from talc. Through single-mineral flotation tests, adsorption analysis, contact angle measurements, Zeta potential measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), in situ optical microscope observation, and Extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (EDLVO) theory calculations, the depression performance and selective mechanism of CMCQ were systematically evaluated. The results show that CMCQ strongly depresses talc, with a talc recovery as low as 10.2% at a concentration of 100 mg/L, while its depression on molybdenite remains weak. Compared with commercial carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), CMCQ reduces talc recovery from over 60.0% to 10.2% at the same concentration, demonstrating a significantly improved depressing effect. Mechanistic studies reveal that CMCQ selectively adsorbs onto the talc surface, reduces its hydrophobicity, and weakens the hydrophobic attraction between the basal planes of molybdenite and talc. As a result, particle adhesion is largely eliminated, leading to efficient selective separation. This study not only facilitates the high-value utilization of corn straw but also provides a novel, efficient depressant for the flotation separation of molybdenite from talc, which is of great significance for promoting sustainable mineral processing technology. In this study, galactomannan (GM) was applied for the first time to the flotation separation of chalcopyrite and talc. Micro-flotation experiments demonstrated that GM exhibited better selectivity than traditional depressants such as sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and dextrin. Optimal separation, achieving a flotation difference of 55.13 % between chalcopyrite and talc, was obtained at pH 10.8 with GM, sodium butyl xanthate (SBX), and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) dosages of 40, 30, and 30 mg/L, respectively. Infrared spectroscopy, zeta potential, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses revealed that GM selectively inhibited SBX adsorption on talc without significantly affecting chalcopyrite. GM primarily bonded to Mg sites on talc and Cu/Fe sites on chalcopyrite. Density functional theory calculations further confirmed that GM showed stronger adsorption on talc, and differences in adsorption configurations explained its preferential inhibition of talc during flotation. This study offers guidance for flotation separation and reagent development in complex ore systems, supporting sustainable mineral resource utilization.

The very close natural floatability of molybdenite and talc has been traditionally believed as the main reason for their separation problem. However, the interactions between the basal and edge planes of the two platy minerals remain unclear. Here the hydrophobic attraction between the basal planes was proposed as the dominating factor for that problem. Flotation tests in both single and mixed mineral systems were conducted using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as talc depressant and sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) as molybdenite collector. Zeta potential distribution, contact angle, in situ optical microscope observation, EDLVO calculation and surface energy analysis were applied to reveal the surfacial actions between the basal and edge planes of molybdenite and talc. Molybdenite and talc showed obvious floatability difference in single mineral system, however, their separation efficiency met with big decline in mixed mineral system. Zeta potential results demonstrated that, in the presence of CMC and SIBX, negatively charged particles of molybdenite and talc aggregated rather than electrostatically repulsed and dispersed. The contact angle and particle adhesion results showed a certain degree of selective attraction between the basal planes of molybdenite and talc. The EDLVO calculation suggested the attractive interactions were ranked as: Mb(basal)-Tlc(edge) > Mb(basal)-Tlc(basal) ≈ Mb(edge)-Tlc(edge) > Mb(edge)-Tlc(basal). The surface energy calculation pointed out that the fundamental reason for the separation problem was exactly the hetero-hydrophobic attraction between their basal planes.

Water-soluble fertilizers (WF) exhibit delivery inefficiencies that limit the productivity of agricultural products and contribute to environmental pollution. Herein, a silica-supported layered double oxide composite (LDO@Si) was synthesized to load urea, KH 2 PO 4 , and Na 2 SeO 3 forming a compound slow-release fertilizer (CSRF). SEMand TEM demonstrated that LDO@Si is a nano hybrid material with a core-shell structure. Nutrients are bound to LDO@Si via chemical bonding, electrostatic interactions, and weak nitrogen-mediated interactions. In a quartz sand column experiment, CSRF exhibited excellent slow-release performance: the long-term release period of urea reached 22 days for nitrogen (N), while those of P, K, and Se exceeded 53 days. The Korsmeyer-Peppas model indicates that CSRF possess a complex release mechanism. Additionally, in 30-day pot experiments, CSRF increased fresh biomass by ∼11.92 % and the uptake of N, P, K, and Se by ∼6.67 %, ∼17.72 %, ∼15.74 %, and ∼419.44 %, respectively, compared with WF. Furthermore, CSRF significantly improved the properties of acidic soils and their nutrient retention capabilities. Compared with WF, the content of slow-release K (SRK) increased by 42.05 %, available P (AP) by 45.91 %, and available Se (ASe) by 32.23 %. This study is expected to provide insights for the design and application of mineral materials in the field of sustainable agriculture.

This study proposes a regulation strategy to address the intractable flotation separation challenge of quartz-talc associated systems. Herein, we identify a cation-gated flotation-selectivity mechanism in aqueous media: site-specific Mg 2+ adsorption at mineral interfaces dictates separation. At pH 2.0 and 150 g/t collector, the concentrate assayed 99.97% SiO 2 with 93.97% recovery. Adsorption simulations validate that the selective adsorption of Mg 2+ on the hydroxylated quartz surface adheres to the standard interfacial activation mechanism. It augments the contact between the quartz surface and water molecules, causes structured reorientation of water molecules, facilitates quartz surface hydroxylation, and increases system hydrophilicity. Mg 2+ titration elicits a biphasic switch: below 3×10 -3 mol/L it site-selectively hydroxylates quartz, amplifying hydrophilicity; above this threshold it collapses the electrical double layer, indiscriminately hydrophilizing all surfaces and abolishing selectivity. These findings provide a theoretical basis and a technical strategy for the efficient purification of complex associated quartz ores.

In this study, a citric acid-soluble fertilizer of dittmarite (NH4MgPO4·H2O) was synthesized by balling talc with NH4H2PO4. The effects of ball milling speed and milling time on the dissolution rates of N, P and Mg in deionized water and 2% citric acid were explored. Characterization technologies such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were applied to test the prepared samples. In water, the prepared dittmarite was changed into struvite (NH4MgPO4·6H2O) with almost no N, P or Mg release, while the dissolution rates of nutrient elements reached almost 100% in 2% citric acid. The proposed work presented a facile and environmentally friendly method to produce CASF with high agricultural and ecological value.
