In this paper, Bismuth/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (Bi/PEDOT) modified electrochemical modified electrodes were prepared by electrochemical deposition method, and the electrochemical performance of the electrode was investigated using cyclic voltammetry under the optimal experimental conditions. The PEDOT polymer has high conductivity, and bismuth can form an alloy with cadmium ions. Bi/PEDOT nanocomposite materials have a larger specific surface area and more active sites, which is more conducive to absorbing more cadmium ions (Cd 2+ ). The Differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry method was used to study the electroanalytical performance of the sensor for Cd 2+ . The data show that the oxidation peak current of cadmium ions in the Bi/PEDOT modified electrode is significantly higher than that of other electrodes, due to the synergistic effect of the composite conductive materials. In the concentration range of 1 nM-40 μM, the concentration of cadmium ions shows a good linear relationship with the peak current, and the lowest detection limit is 0.33 nM. In addition, the sensor also exhibits good stability, reproducibility and very low detection limit, which can be used for rapid determination of trace cadmium ions, with a recovery rate in actual sample analysis of 101.4 %-104.0 %.

This work reports the design, fabrication and properties of 4,4′-oxydiphenylguanidinium-bridged-silsesquioxane (ODGBS) modified polysulfone anion exchange membrane (AEM). It was prepared by sol-gel polymerization of ODGBS in the network of cross-linked, quaternized polysulfone. With hydrophilic biphenylguanidinium and Si O Si moieties working synergistically, the ODGBS derived gel functions as a water “reservoir” in the membrane and thus gives rise to high water uptake, which facilitates hydroxide ion transport via a vehicular mechanism. High water uptake may also “dilute” hydroxide ion at the vicinity of cations and lessen the hydroxide attack on cations. Moreover, ODGBS does not contain β hydrogen atoms , thus reducing the likelihood of Hofmann elimination under hydroxide attack. Due to the above benefits, ODGBS modified AEM could exhibit an improved conductivity from 19 to 25 mS/cm 2 at 30 °C, and a conductivity retention of 85% when treated in 1 M NaOH at 60 °C for 120 h, higher than that of the un-modified AEM (72%). This work provides a new strategy for enhancing stability and conductivity of AEM.

Metallic bismuth crystal is one important and interesting semimetal that has attracted great attention owing to its unique thermal and electrical properties. Herein, we report a facile, green, cost-effective and sustainable solvothermal process using ethanol, glycol, isopropanol, phenylcarbinol as solvent and commercial Bi 2 O 3 as the starting material to produce high-purity metallic Bi with tunable morphologies on large scale. It is found that all alcohols are capable of reducing Bi 2 O 3 to Bi and the reducibility of glycol is proved to be the strongest. The highest purity of the resultant Bi is calculated to be 99.74%. What's more, the morphology of final Bi particles is controllable by adding various types and concentrations of additives. As a consequence, our work lays the root for the large scale solvothermal production of high-purity Bi particles with various regular morphologies.

This work creatively uses peroxidase-like ZnS hollow spheres (ZnS HSs) to cooperate with glucose oxidase (GOx) for glucose determinations. This approach is that the ZnS HSs electrocatalytically oxidate the enzymatically generated H2O2 to O2, and then the O2 circularly participates in the previous glucose oxidation by glucose oxidase. Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are used as electron transfer and enzyme immobilization matrices, respectively. The biosensor of glucose oxidase–carbon nanotubes–Au nanoparticles–ZnS hollow spheres–gold electrode (GOx–CNT–AuNPs–ZnS HSs–GE) exhibits a rapid response, a low detection limit (10 μM), a wide linear range (20 μM to 7 mM) as well as good anti-interference, long-term longevity and reproducibility.

To tackle the issue of the low specific capacity (372 mA h g−1) of graphite as the anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), an effective and controllable strategy was developed to construct porous bimetallic Co/Zn embedded N-doped carbon (Co–Zn/N–C) polyhedral nanocages via annealing a ZIF-8@ZIF-67 precursor at 800 °C under Ar atmosphere. The results clearly displayed that metallic Co and Zn particles are uniformly dispersed in the carbon matrix. Porous Co–Zn/N–C polyhedral nanocages have a large specific surface area of 349.12 m2 g−1 and contain plenty of micropores and mesopores, which benefit from the carbonization of organic ligands and the catalytic effect of cobalt in the calcination process. As anodes for LIBs, the porous Co–Zn/N–C polyhedral nanocages showed an initial discharge capacity of 809 mA h g−1 and a capacity retention of 702 mA h g−1 after 400 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A g−1. Furthermore, a reversible capacity of 444 mA h g−1 was obtained at a much higher current density of 2 A g−1. The improved electrochemical performance was attributed to the synergistic effect of Zn and Co, the unique porous hollow structure as well as N doping, which relieved the impact of volume changes, maintained perfect electrical conductivity throughout the electrode and enhanced the electrochemical activities of lithium storage.

The electroreduction of CO2 to formate is of significant interest due to its potential for sustainable fuel and chemical production. Hollow fiber electrodes, which integrate gas diffusion and catalytic layers, offer structural advantages. These advantages enhance gas–solid–liquid-phase reactions, making them particularly beneficial for CO2 electroreduction. This work reports a copper–bismuth alloy hollow fiber with a nanostructured surface, designed with specific metal ratios and transformed into a sulfur surface-modified copper–bismuth alloy hollow fiber (Cu7S4–CuBi HF) electrode with nanoflower structures. CO2-penetration mode enhances formate current density and Faradaic Efficiency (FE) while suppressing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), due to the fiber’s unique gas transport. The nanoflower morphology increases the electrochemical active surface area, boosting current densities. This design achieved a formate FE of 91.27% at −0.9 V vs RHE and a current density of 80.12 mA cm–2, outperforming many existing Cu@Bi electrocatalysts. This success is due to the innovative surface design and the distinct structural features of the hollow fiber electrodes.

Photocatalytic N -formylation of amines with CO 2 is a promising strategy to convert CO 2 into value-added chemicals sustainably. In this work, Pd-Bi bimetallic modified ZnO enriched in oxygen vacancies is constructed for photocatalytic CO 2 formylation of benzylamine at room temperature without any reductants. The Pd and Bi sites reduce the band gap energy of ZnO, promote the separation of the photogenerated charge carriers and enhance the adsorption capacity of CO 2 . The yield of N -benzylformamide reaches 31.7 mmol g −1 with a selectivity of 85.3 % after 3-hour radiation in N , N -dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. The aldehyde group involved in the formylation of benzylamine is derived from the decomposition of DMF, which is regenerated with the aldehyde group coming from the reduction of CO 2 . The decomposition-regeneration cycle of DMF solvent enlarges the reaction region, which is beneficial to the activity and selectivity of the formylation process. The synergistic photocatalytic system shows a good universality. This study provides a new approach to high-efficiency CO 2 utilization and formamide production.

In the process of photocatalytic ammonia synthesis , efficient activation of nitrogen molecules constitutes a fundamental challenge. During the N 2 activation, the close interdependence between the acceptance and donation of electron results in their mutual limitation, leading to high energy barrier for N 2 activation and unsatisfactory photocatalytic performance. This work decoupled the electron acceptance and donation processes by constructing Fe-Bi dual active sites, resulting in enhancing N 2 activation through the high electron trapping ability of Fe 3+ and strong electron donating ability of Bi 2+ . The photocatalytic nitrogen reduction efficiency of 3%Fe/Bi 2 O 2.33 (118.71 μmol g cat −1 h −1 ) is 5.3 times that of Bi 2 O 2.33 (22.41 μmol g cat −1 h −1 ). In-situ Fourier transform infrared (In situ FTIR) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations manifest that Fe 3+ -Bi 2+ dual active sites work together to promote nitrogen adsorption and activation, and the reaction path is more inclined toward alternate hydrogenation path. N 2 adsorption and activation properties are optimized by heteronuclear bimetallic active sites, which offers a new way for the rational design of nitrogen-fixing photocatalysts .

Mesoporous TiO 2 with a homogeneous Bi-Ag bimetallic distribution (Bi@Ag@MTs) can be obtained by calcination of a titanium-based metal organic framework (MOF, MIL-125) with Bi and Ag loading and applied to the photocatalytic reduction of nitrate using formic acid as a hole scavenger. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analyses show that Ag(I) and Bi(III) are present in MTs as fine clusters and Bi@Ag@MTs have a specific pancake structure, which provides a good carrier for photocatalytic reaction. The contents of Ag and Bi in Bi@Ag@MTs can be up to 2.28 wt% and 0.54 wt% analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES). Under UV irradiation, Bi@Ag@MTs(0.2,0.4) showed a high reduction rate (3.28 h −1 , 4.2 times that of P25), high conversion (100 %, 1.3 times that of P25) and high N 2 selectivity (89.2 %, 2.1 times that of P25) for nitrate reduction. In addition, Bi@Ag@MTs(0.2,0.4) showed good reusability, with the respective NO 3 − conversion and N 2 selectivity still reaching 82.2 % and 78.0 % after four cycles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that under UV irradiation, part of Ag(I) would be reduced to Ag 0 , and the formed Ag-Ag 2 O structure helped to improve the photocatalytic activity of the catalyst. This preparation strategy provides assistance in the design of photocatalytic materials with significant activity and durability for nitrate reduction.

For capacitor applications, Ba(Sm 1- x - y La x Bi y ) 2 Ti 4 O 12 dielectric ceramics with La/Bi co-substitution for Sm were prepared using the conventional solid-state method. Part of Sm 3+ was found to be replaced by La 3+ and Bi 3+ in ceramics that exhibit an orthorhombic tungsten bronze structure. As the concentration of Bi 3+ increased, a second phase of Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 was observed. The co-substitutions could reduce the sintering temperature and effectively increase the dielectric constant from 80 to 140. The dielectric loss increased slightly with increasing La 3+ and Bi 3+ , but it still remained below 0.1% at 1 kHz. After sintering, a specific composition was achieved with x = 0.1 and y = 0.4. It has a high dielectric constant of 132, an ultra-low dielectric loss of approximately 0.06%, and excellent frequency stability. Additionally, it exhibits a capacitance-temperature change of ± 1% at 1 kHz over a temperature range of − 55 to 125 °C.

LaFeO 3 perovskite has possessed great potential in the field of microwave absorption considering its outstanding dielectric and magnetic properties. In this work, Bi-doped LaFeO 3 powders (BLFO) were prepared by a simple solid state reaction method. The results have demonstrated that the crystalline of LaFeO 3 and the lattice oxygen are increased with the additionally introduced Bi. As a result, the samples could exhibit the strongest microwave absorption with the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −39.48 dB and the effective absorption band (EAB) of 3.63 GHz (10.28–13.91 GHz) at a filling ratio of 60 wt%. The excellent microwave absorption properties are ascribed to the enhanced conductive loss, polarization relaxation and the co-existed magnetic loss. Moreover, the optimum sample exhibits the radar cross-section values below −10 dBm 2 across a wide angular range of −90° to 90° with a thickness of 2.5 mm. Therefore, this work opens up a feasible and effective way for modulating the electromagnetic properties of perovskite materials as potential microwave absorbents.

Photocatalysis is the most promising green approach to solve antibiotic pollution in water, but the actual treatment effect is limited by photocatalytic activity. Herein, Bi and BiOCl were loaded onto the surface of Ce-MOF (metal–organic framework) using an electrostatic adsorption method, and a special ternary heterojunction of Ce/Bi/BiOCl was successfully prepared as a photocatalyst for the degradation of tetracycline (TC). FTIR demonstrated that the obtained photocatalyst contains functional groups such as -COOH belonging to Ce-MOF and characteristic crystal planes of Bi and BiOCl, indicating the successful construction of a ternary photocatalyst. The results of UV–vis absorption spectra confirm that the band gap of Ce/Bi/BiOCl heterojunction is reduced from 3.35 eV to 2.7 eV, resulting in an enhanced light absorption capability in the visible light region. The special ternary heterojunction constructed by Ce-MOF, Bi, and BiOCl could achieve a narrow band gap and reasonable band structure, thereby enhancing the separation of photogenerated charges. Consequently, the photocatalytic performance of the Ce/Bi/BiOCl ternary heterojunction was significantly enhanced compared to Ce-MOF, Bi, and BiOCl. Therefore, Ce/Bi/BiOCl can achieve a photocatalytic degradation rate of 97.7% within 20 min, which is much better than Bi (14.8%) and BiOCl (67.9%). This work successfully constructed MOF-based ternary photocatalysts and revealed the relationship between ternary heterojunctions and photocatalytic activity. This provides inspiration for constructing other heterogeneous catalysts for use in the field of photocatalysis.
