Currently, there is a huge demand for medical biomaterials aimed to improve antibacterial effect and promote wound healing. In this work, a facile and single-step approach of synthesizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite material (namely, AgNPs@rGO) using high-voltage direct-current (DC) non-thermal plasma was proposed. Electron-beam (e-beam) from the DC-plasma discharge zone was implanted into the solution of AgNO 3 and graphene oxide (GO), leading to the reduction of both GO and silver ions. As a result, AgNPs were formed and distributed homogeneously on the reduced graphene sheets. This composite material exhibits excellent antibacterial performance, being able to kill both Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) effectively. Furthermore, this composite material was utilized to prepare wound-healing band-aids. The in vitro assay on mice confirmed the satisfactory curing effect. The cytotoxicity for bio-compatibility and the mechanism for sterilization were also examined and clarified. As such, this work puts forward a facile and new route of preparing antibacterial biomaterial and demonstrates its promising prospect in wound-healing application.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are critical determinants of loquat flavor quality and cultivar differentiation, but comprehensive characterization and rapid detection remain challenging. This study aimed to establish a robust approach for discriminating three loquat cultivars and evaluating their flavor quality by integrating electronic nose (E-nose) technology and Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography–Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (GC × GC-TOF-MS). GC × GC-TOF-MS was used for VOC profiling, while E-nose was applied for rapid fragrance characterization, with orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) and correlation analysis performed to identify discriminatory compounds and sensor-VOC relationships. GC × GC-TOF-MS identified over 2000 volatile compounds across three loquat cultivars. OPLS-DA further screened 22 discriminatory VOCs with variable importance in projection (VIP) values >1, which contributed to aroma hierarchy shifts among cultivars. E-nose sensors W1W and W1S showed high sensitivity to floral-scent-related VOCs, serving as key factors for distinguishing fragrance quality. Notably, E-nose detection results exhibited good consistency with GC × GC-TOF-MS data, and W1W/W1S sensors were significantly positively correlated with key VOCs. These findings demonstrate that the integration of E-nose and GC × GC-TOF-MS offers complementary advantages for comprehensive VOC characterization and cultivar discrimination. The established approach provides a scientific basis for optimizing loquat quality standards by incorporating VOC-driven biochemical authenticity and a potential efficient method for rapid, non-destructive assessment of postharvest flavor quality in loquat cultivars. These results facilitate quality control and cultivar authentication in the fruit industry.

Beef tallow is valued in the food industry for its unique flavor but remains susceptible to oxidative deterioration during storage and processing, leading to rancidity and quality loss. This study evaluated the effects of four antioxidants (propyl gallate, PG; tert-butylhydroquinone, TBHQ; butylated hydroxytoluene, BHT; and vitamin E, VE) within regulatory limits on beef tallow during 15 days of oven-accelerated oxidation. A multi-index assessment (oxidation indices, antioxidant capacity, tocopherol retention) combined with principal component analysis (PCA) was used. The antioxidants did not alter the fatty acid composition. PCA ranked TBHQ first in overall performance, followed closely by PG. At 0.1 g/kg, PG limited the acid value to 1.49 mg/g and the p-anisidine value to 1.97 after 15 days, although TBHQ at 0.2 g/kg showed a slightly lower acid value (1.28 mg/g). Notably, PG retained 16.06 mg/kg of endogenous tocopherols after 3 days of oxidation, whereas tocopherols were undetectable in TBHQ-treated groups. The FRAP value of the PG group reached 511.95 μmol TE/100 g. Although TBHQ showed strong efficacy, its use has attracted increasing regulatory scrutiny and consumer concern in some regions. PG offers a favorable safety profile while providing comparable protection in several indices, delaying early tocopherol depletion under accelerated oxidation and exhibiting superior FRAP values. Therefore, PG at 0.1 g/kg can serve as a favorable alternative to TBHQ in beef tallow systems.

Recently, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and other nucleotide analogs have been identified as non-canonical RNA caps in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. In Escherichia coli, NAD capping has been shown to be influenced by environmental conditions in a gene-specific manner, yet its regulatory mechanisms remain poorly understood. We previously reported that most transcripts produced by sibD are NAD-capped during the stationary phase. In this study, we found that the 35-bp minimal promoter of sibD is sufficient for its NAD capping. When this minimal promoter was applied to express genes not typically producing NAD-RNAs, their transcripts could also be NAD-capped. These findings strongly support that NAD capping in E. coli occurs during transcription initiation mediated by the promoter and RNA polymerase. Additionally, the bacterial alarmone ppGpp and the small protein DksA, both transcription initiation regulators, synergistically enhance transcription of both NAD-capped and uncapped RNAs from sibD and its homologous genes, sibC and sibE, in vitro. In contrast, the ppGpp⁰ mutant, deficient in ppGpp synthesis, showed a significant reduction in NAD-RNA production from these genes. Our findings elucidate the cis-elements and trans-acting factors mediating NAD capping during transcription initiation, offering novel insight into this regulatory process.

Firstly, through various analytical methods, the mechanism by which the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction capacity of E. coli O157:H7 was enhanced under 4% NaCl stress was revealed. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) results indicated that the oxygen reduction ability of E. coli O157: H7 was improved under NaCl stress. Microbiological analysis confirmed the intracellular ROS levels in E. coli O157: H7 under NaCl stress is related to the upregulation of SOD/CAT activity. Metabolomics identified key metabolic adaptations in E. coli O157:H7, including enhanced tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycles and ubiquinone (Q) biosynthesis, which promoted effective respiratory electron transfer in the bacteria. Secondly, the BPE-ECL (Bipolar Electrochemiluminescence) sensor designed based on 4% NaCl stress showed 9.72 times increase in anode ECL intensity. The detection limit was extremely low at 10 CFU for E. coli O157:H7 in 1 mL sample volume. This research provides a new solution for the sensitive screening of electrochemically active bacteria.

A novel triple evolution strategy overcame the lipase activity-stability trade-off. • CM5 showed 2.3-fold higher activity and 4.8-fold solvent tolerance than WT. • MD simulations link CM5 stability to rigidity and stable hydration shell. • The VES synthesis strategy achieved the highest yield and reusability to date. • A complete chain from computational design to practical production was validated. Biocatalysts exhibit broad application prospects in industrial production. However, the inherent instability of natural enzymes in non-aqueous media severely limits their practical utilization. Using Candida rugosa lipase as a model, a synergistic evolution strategy integrating ancestral sequence reconstruction, free energy optimization and surface hydration shell modulation was developed in this study. The optimal mutant CM5 exhibited simultaneously enhanced stability and activity, showing a 4.78-fold increase in tolerance to 65% (v/v) dimethyl sulfoxide, a 1.67-fold extension in half-life at 50 ℃ and a 2.30-fold increase in activity compared to the wild type. Molecular dynamics simulations indicated that the enhanced stability of CM5 originates from improved structural rigidity and the stabilized hydration shell. Meanwhile, its increased activity is attributed to a reduced energy barrier for the lid conformational transition and an optimal enzyme substrate affinity that significantly boosts substrate turnover efficiency. Moreover, a volumetric activity of 142.71 U/mL in a 5 L bioreactor was obtained via optimization of the chassis cells, and the resulting culture was then used for the immobilization. The lipase CM5 immobilized on amino octadecyl bifunctional macroporous resin (CM5@AOMR) achieved a vitamin E succinate yield of > 99.9% and maintained an outstanding yield of 98.2% even after ten consecutive batch reactions. Overall, this study developed a comprehensive workflow from computational design and efficient fermentation to immobilization and practical applications of lipase, providing a promising new approach for developing next generation biocatalysts suited for extreme industrial environments. With the fast pace of technological advancement and the accelerating replacement cycle of electronic devices, the process of extracting gold from electronic waste ( E -waste) has emerged as a pivotal challenge for resource recycling and environmental sustainability. In this work, a series of thiourea-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-based polymers (POSS@ATU-X) abundant in sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) active sites was synthesized through a facile one-step functionalization strategy, and its performance and underlying mechanism for Au(III) adsorption were systematically investigated. POSS@ATU-4 delivered a rapid adsorption kinetic profile, with 90% of its maximum adsorption capacity attained within 3 h and equilibrium reached at 6 h. Isothermal adsorption tests revealed an ultra-high maximum adsorption capacity of 2643.64 mg g −1 at 318 K. Notably, POSS@ATU-4 exhibited outstanding selectivity for Au(III) in both multi-metal coexisting systems and actual printed circuit board (PCB) leachate, with its removal rate far exceeding those of other coexisting metal ions. After six consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, the material retained 99% of its initial adsorption efficiency, demonstrating exceptional structural stability and reusability. Mechanistic studies elucidated that Au(III) removal was governed by the synergistic effects of electrostatic attraction and surface coordination interactions. This work provides a feasible and effective strategy for achieving highly selective and stable gold recovery from acidic E -waste streams, which holds great promise for practical industrial applications.

Escherichia coli O157:H7 ( E. coli O157) is still one of the main pathogenic strains causing food poisoning. Here in, we established a strategy that can simultaneously remove free E. coli O157 and the biofilms it forms. Composite nanofiber (fP-NF) films were synthesized successfully by co-encapsulating E. coli O157 phages which isolated from domestic sewage and D -phenylalanine (D-Phe) into sodium alginate (SA)/polyethylene oxide (PEO) nanofibers by electrospinning. And dehydrated trehalose was added as a phage protectant. When SA:PEO is 3:9, the spinning solution has the optimum conductivity and viscosity, the average diameter of the obtained fP-NFs is 421.87 nm, and the mechanical strength and transparency of the fP-NF film are the best. The thermal stability of the fP-NF film was good, and the phage activity in the fiber was well preserved. The remaining population of phages in fP-NF membranes was still close to 10 6 PFU/mL after one week of placement, and the cumulative release efficiencies of phages at both room temperature (25 °C) and refrigerated storage temperature (4 °C) were above 70%. The antibacterial experiment showed that compared with the control group, the addition of D-Phe slightly enhanced the antibacterial activity of the nanofiber films against free E. coli O157, and the bactericidal rate within 8 h was 99.74%. On the other hand, D-Phe significantly enhanced the inhibitory activity of the nanofiber films against E. coli O157 biofilms, with the inhibition rate exceeding 99.99% within 72 h. The application results further confirmed that the addition of D-Phe could significantly enhance the inhibitory activity of nanofiber films on E. coli O157 proliferation and biofilm formation during short-term storage of beef and fruits and vegetables. It provides an important strategy and reference for the development of new active food packaging materials .

Traditional liquid lithium-sulfur batteries have two key problems: poor safety and shuttle effect . These two challenges can be overcome by using solid-state electrolytes. But poor ionic and electronic conductivity due to solid/solid contact between the electrode and the electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs). Here, we have synthesized Li 6.4 Ga 0.2 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) conductive ceramics with high ionic conductivity . LLZO is used as the lithium-ion conductor and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNt) are used as the electronic conductor to form S/MWCNt/LLZO by the thermal diffusion method, resulting in an e − /S/Li + conductive network. The prepared S/MWCNt/LLZO composite material, composite solid electrolyte, and lithium metal are assembled into ASSLSBs. After 50 cycles, the high capacity of 825 mAh·g −1 is maintained with 72.62% capacity retention at 0.2C and 45 °C. The higher capacity indicates the success of forming a conductive network that can improve the electrochemical performance of ASSLSBs. At 0.2C, the capacity of the S/MWCNt/LLZO composite cathode remains at 873 mAh·g −1 after 60 cycles when the operating temperature is increased to 60 °C, indicating good cycle performance.

Owing to the significant roles in balancing carrier transport, bandgap alignment, and perovskite crystallization, realizing high-quality electron transport layers (ETLs) and their effective electronic contact with the perovskite photoactive layer is crucial for future commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, a high-quality SnO 2 ETL is firstly deposited at room temperature via the low-cost electron beam evaporation (E-beam) technology to help achieve an impressive PCE of 18.88% for rigid PSCs and a PCE of 15.73% for flexible devices. Then we introduced a novel passivating ligand molecule, 11 Maleimidoundecanoic acids (11MA), to help induce functional defects passivation at the interface of SnO 2 /Perovskite to coordinate with Pb 2+ in perovskite and Sn 4+ in SnO 2 via the functional groups (-C = O, -COOH). As a result, 11MA could help achieve the best PCE of 20.94% with negligible hysteresis for rigid devices. Also, doping 11MA in the perovskite photoactive layer further enhanced the PCE to 22.08% with much improved 2000 hours ambient stabilities. Finally, we fabricated different large-area rigid devices (10, 40, 100, and 600 mm 2 ) toward speeding up the commercialization of PSCs by industrial E-beam technology and rational defects passivation strategies.

To address resources shortage and environmental degradation, noble metal recovery from e-waste is in desperate need. Herein, to achieve selective extraction of gold (Au) and palladium (Pd) from practical e-waste, a series of tridentate thioether extractants are designed with ester functional groups at both ends of the thioether. By varying the chain length of the ester alkyl, the relationship between extractant structure and performance is further explored. The results indicate that the as-introduced tridentate structure facilitate the Au(III) and Pd(II) extraction, demonstrating a complex mechanism involving both coordination substitution and ion association. Notably, the extractant with the shortest carbon chain length and smallest molecular weight delivers outstanding extraction capacities of 920.2 mg/g for Au(III) and 280.7 mg/g for Pd(II). More importantly, it exhibits superior selectivity (∼100 %) for Au(III) and Pd(II) in complex metal solutions. This work guides the design of thioether-based extractants for sustainable recovery of noble metal from practical e-waste.

The efficacy of eight kinds of green leaf volatiles (GLVs) was investigated as potential natural antifungal agents against Aspergillus flavus in this study. Based on the in vitro assay, volatile phase inhibitory effects of the selected eight GLVs were consistently more effective on A. flavus growth than contact phase inhibitory effects, and ( E )-2-hexenal exhibited the highest efficacy as it could totally inhibited growth of A. flavus at concentrations of 0.032 μL/mL air and 1.6 μL/mL under vapor and contact conditions, respectively. Furthermore, results obtained from the in vivo assay demonstrated that ( E )-2-hexenal possessed potent fumigant activity in reducing A. flavus infection in stored peanut seeds, as it could completely inhibit colonization of A. flavus at 0.32 μL/mL air. Both in vitro and in vivo assay results provided convincing evidence that ( E )-2-hexenal, one of the GLVs that is naturally present in many plants, can potentially be used as a highly efficient and eco-friendly antifungal fumigant to protect peanut seeds from contamination of A. flavus during storage.
