Owing to the low-cost and fast process, molten salt electrolysis is considered as a novel method to replace the Kroll process for preparing titanium. However, this process has not been fully realized because of the multi-step reduction and complicated disproportionation behaviors of multivalent titanium ions in melt. To address such critical problems, here we use liquid metals (Sn and Pb) as the cathode instead of solid metal cathode (Mo) during the electrolysis, in which the reduction process of Ti3+ (TiF63−) becomes a simple one-step process (Ti3+ + 3e = Ti (alloys)). Also, the deposition potential is more positive (>0.5 V) than that using solid Mo, owing to the depolarizing effect of the liquid metals. One-step process and depolarization behavior are favorable to increase the current efficiency, effectively decreasing the power consumption in comparison with the conventional electrolysis at solid metal cathodes. Similar to the electrolytic production of aluminum in Hall-Heroult system, there would be a continuous electrolysis process because the product is liquid alloy in this system.

A simple synthesis has been developed for watermelon-like nanocomposites with Ti-based oxides as the matrix. Using the case of Sb nanocrystals in amorphous TiPO x as an example, in-situ/ex-situ techniques, first-principle calculations and control experiments confirm that the formation of Ti-based oxides promotes the reduction of Sb 3+ to Sb by NH 3 at an elevated temperature. A similar synthesis process also succeeds for Sb nanocrystals in amorphous TiO 2 and for Bi nanocrystals in amorphous TiPO x , confirming the promising potential of this synthesis. More importantly, the nanocomposite composed by crystalline Sb in an amorphous TiPO x matrix, as the anode material for sodium storage, concurrently exhibits a long cycle life (~1000 cycles) and a high capacity retention (~82%), suggesting the advantages of watermelon-like structures.

Hybrid ion capacitors, especially sodium ion capacitors (SICs), have recently attracted enormous attention due to their combined merits of high energy density from the battery-type anode and high power density from the capacitor-type cathode. However, achieving high-performance SICs to overcome the sluggish kinetic energy storage feature and inferior cycling stability of the battery-type anode remains a challenge. In this work, N-doped porous carbon embedded with ultrasmall titanium oxynitride nanoparticles (TiOxNy/C) was developed from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). As the SIC anode, the as-designed TiOxNy/C exhibited a high reversible capacity (275 mA h g−1 at 50 mA g−1), ultrahigh rate capability, and superior cycling performance, which is attributed to the effective synergy between the ultrasmall TiOxNy nanoparticles and N-doped porous carbon. Furthermore, using a “two-for-one” strategy, N-doped hierarchical porous carbon (NHPC) with high surface area was prepared from TiOxNy/C by HF etching and displayed high specific capacity and rate capability when used as a SIC cathode. Considering the excellent electrochemical performances of both the anode and cathode, the as-assembled TiOxNy/C//NHPC SIC delivered a high energy density (80 W h kg−1) and high power density (4000 W kg−1).

The Ni–W–S nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesised on Ti mesh through the typical hydrothermal method. The obtained Ti/Ni–W–S was characterised on morphology, composition and electrocatalytic property. It showed good electrocatalytic performance towards glucose oxidation in strong alkali electrolyte, exhibiting the potential application in the field of fuel cell. The excellent electrocatalytic activity of Ni–W–S NPs, the favourable electron transfer between electrode and catalysts, as well as the high conductivity of Ti contributed to its final catalytic performance of Ti/Ni–W–S.

In this study, flexible CuxS-CNT/Ti counter electrodes (CEs) were prepared through successive ionic layer adsorption followed by reaction technique (SILAR). The electrocatalytic activities of the obtained CuxS-CNT/Ti CEs were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Tafel polarization measurements. The results indicated that the catalytic activities of CNT/Ti films significantly improved after deposition of CuxS nanoparticles. CuxS-CNT/Ti flexible CEs were then assembled with CdS and CdSe QDs co-sensitized TiO2 film electrodes to prepare simple QDSCs. The optimized QDSCs based on CuxS-CNT/Ti flexible CEs delivered photovoltaic conversion efficiencies reaching ca. 6.20%. These values were ca. 48.7% higher than those based on CNT/Ti CEs.

Ti(IV)-based complexes have been demonstrated as candidates for preparing hybrid and functional materials, and have received considerable attention. In this paper, hierarchical hollow titania materials with different surface nanostructures were synthesized successfully using a hydrothermal process via the transformation of a Ti(IV) oxalate complex as a precursor. Different concentrations of ammonia were used to adjust the morphologies and crystalline forms of the hydrothermal products. The hierarchical hollow anatase titania materials, HHTM-1 (cal) and HHTM-2 (cal), have high surface areas of up to 132 m2 g−1 and 84 m2 g−1, respectively, and show superior performance for dye degradation in water.

Sillenite Bi12MO20 (M = Ti, Ge, Si) nanofibers have been fabricated through a facile electrospinning route for photocatalytic applications. Uniform Bi12MO20 (M = Ti, Ge, Si) nanofibers with diameters of 100–200 nm and lengths of up to several millimeters can be readily obtained by thermally treating the electrospun precursors. The photocatalytic activities of these nanofibers for degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) were explored under UV-visible light. The band structure and the degradation mechanisms were also discussed. The fibrous photocatalysts of Bi12TiO20, Bi12SiO20 and Bi12GeO20 exhibit different photocatalytic behaviours, which are attributed to the microstructure, band gap, and electronic structures.

The electrochemical oxidation of acetaminophen, a kind of potentially dangerous pharmaceutical compound, is conducted on planar and porous Ti/boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes to investigate the effect of electrode structure on the electrochemical oxidation behavior. Oxidative peak corresponding to the electron transfer of acetaminophen could be observed around 0.90 V (versus saturated calomel electrode, SCE) on BDD electrodes. The current response from a chronoamperometric curve is proportionally linear in the concentration range from 0 to 3 mmol L − 1 and higher response slope could be obtained on porous Ti/BDD electrode. Complete mineralization can be realized on Ti/BDD electrodes while porous Ti/BDD presents higher COD removal rate and current efficiency compared with planar BDD. The decay kinetics of acetaminophen on BDD electrodes follows a pseudo-first-order behavior, and the corresponding apparent rate constants are 0.208 and 0.344 h − 1 for planar and porous Ti/BDD electrodes at 30 mA cm − 2 . From the detection of hydroxyl radicals , higher generation rate and amount can be obtained on porous Ti/BDD electrode. The enhancement for electrochemical oxidation is related to the porous structure of porous Ti/BDD electrode, which provides more active sites for hydroxyl radicals ( OH) generation. The discrepancy between the COD removal and amount of OH could be explained by the utilization rate of OH.

The selective tumor- and bacteria-killing property is promising for biomedical implants in directly contact with tumor tissue but still presents a considerable challenge. In this study, a butyrate-inserted Ni–Ti layered double hydroxide film (LDH/Butyrate) is prepared on the surface of nitinol alloy via a simple hydrothermal treatment. The prepared film can selectively inhibit tumor growth and metastasis and bacterial infection by taking advantage of the overproduced H 2 O 2 in tumor and infection microenvironments: the pro-tumor and pro-infection molecule H 2 O 2 can be consumed by LDH/Butyrate, and cytotoxic butyrate inserted in LDH/Butyrate is subsequently exchanged out. Such a novel endogenous stimuli-responsive platform is expected to prevent tumor overgrowth, metastasis and bacterial infection and will find a promising application in the design of localized drug-eluting systems.

A hydrothermal rota-crystallization method is developed for the one-step synthesis of a hollownest-structured zeolite precursor with the shell composed of autogenously-intergrown MWW nanosheet crystals containing a large number of stacking-pores without using any porogen or hard scaffold. This material possesses a large external surface area. By simple acid washing, the resultant Ti-containing catalyst can be directly used in the epoxidation of alkenes with hydrogen peroxide. The excellent catalytic activity over the Ti-HSZ catalyst is assumed to be due to the exposure of more Ti active sites over the MWW nanosheet crystals in the shell of the catalyst. More importantly, this Ti-HSZ catalyst washed with H2O2/ethanol solution has been reused 6 times without an appreciable decrease in both the conversion of the allyl chloride and the selectivity of the epichlorohydrin, which is ascribed to the structural stability of the hollownest-structured zeolite.

The highly efficient and chemoselective α,α′-bis-substitution of alkanones is important in organic synthesis. Herein, a dimeric titanium cluster, Ti 2 Cl 2 (OPr i ) 6 ·2HOPr i ( Ti 2 ), is used in the Claisen–Schmidt condensation reaction, for the selectively activation of symmetrical ketones containing α,α′-methylene groups and production of α,α′-bis-substituted alkanones in high efficiency and chemoselectivity. The high efficiency and chemoselectivity can be extended to a variety of typical alkanones and aromatic aldehydes . Both of the oxo-bridged dimeric motif of Ti 2 and the ionic Ti–Cl bond are responsible for the high efficiency and chemoselectivity.

Recently, many scientists have focused on the development of green industrial technology. However, the process of synthesizing vinyl chloride faces the problem of Hg pollution. Via a novel approach, we used two elements Mo and Ti to prepare an inexpensive and green binary transition metal nitride (BTMN) as the active ingredient in a catalyst with nano-sized particles and an excellent degree of activation, which was supported on activated carbon. When the Mo/Ti mole ratio was 3:1, the conversion of acetylene reached 89% and the selectivity exceeded 98.5%. The doping of Ti in Mo-based catalysts reduced the capacity of adsorption for acetylene and also increased the adsorption of hydrogen chloride. Most importantly, the performance of the BTMN excelled those of the individual transition metal nitrides, due to the synergistic activity between Mo and Ti. This will expand the new epoch of the employment of transition metal nitrides as catalysts in the hydrochlorination of acetylene reaction. Keywords:binary transition metal nitride;acetylene hydrochlorination
