Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) plays contradictory roles in tumor immunology: (I) to activate positive host's immunity for eliminating tumor; (II) to induce negative adaptive immune resistance via up-regulating programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) expression for tumors to evade immune surveillance. The negative feedback loop between the IFN-γ recovery and the IFN-γ-induced PD-L1 up-regulation puts postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy into a dilemma. It is of great significance but challenging to manipulate the double-edge effects of IFN-γ against postoperative tumor progression. Herein, a platelet-engineered nanoplatform ( [email protected] NPs) capable of harmonizing janus-faced nature of IFN-γ was designed via uniquely co-assembling doxorubicin (Dox) and cyclin-dependent kinase 5 inhibitor roscovitine (Rosco) with platelet membrane fragment (PMF) as the particulate stabilizer . With [email protected] NPs navigated by PMF to residual tumor, the Dox-activated immune response recovered IFN-γ secretion for positive host's immunity, while the IFN-γ-induced negative adaptive immune resistance was potently overcome by Rosco via disabling PD-L1 expression without dependence of IFN-γ stimulation. The negative feedback loop between IFN-γ recovery and PD-L1 up-regulation was thus potently disrupted in postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. Our [email protected] NPs not only harmonized janus-faced nature of IFN-γ to effectively regulate postoperative tumor progression, but also illustrated an innovative strategy for high-drug-loading biomimic nanoplatform.

High-performance electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials have been widely used in the wireless communication and electronic devices due to their important potentials in electromagnetic attenuation. However, it is difficult to develop carbon-based absorbers with thin thickness, lightweight, and low filler loading. In this work, rationally designed hollow nanosphere γ -Fe 2 O 3 /MWCNTs composites were successfully realized for ultrathin, lightweight, and high-efficiency EMW absorbers. It showed that the composition, microstructure, and morphology of composites were tailored, which gave rise to the tunable magnetic behavior, porosity, and electromagnetic parameters. The rational design of composition and novel structure contributed to the optimization of the impedance match. The EMW attenuation was enhanced by the synergistic effects of the dielectric loss originated from the interfacial and dipole polarization, conductive loss stemmed from the 3D conductive network, and the magnetic loss derived from the eddy-current loss and ferromagnetic resonance. Accordingly, the hollow nanosphere γ -Fe 2 O 3 /MWCNTs composites with a low filling ratio of 20 wt% achieved an ultrathin matching thickness of 1.4 mm and a strong reflection loss of −63.6 dB. The substantially enhanced EMW absorbing performances were owing to the optimized impedance matching and enhanced attenuation capability. Therefore, this work can provide a paradigm for the design and synthesis of hollow nanosphere γ -Fe 2 O 3 /MWCNTs composites with an enhanced EMW absorption.

Apart from surface complexation, precipitation of minerals also plays an important role in reducing the mobility and transport of heavy metals in the environment. In this study, Cd(II) sorption species on surfaces of γ-Al 2 O 3 at pH 7.5 were characterized using multiple techniques. Results show that in addition to adsorption complexes, Cd hydroxide phases (Cd(OH) 2 precipitates and Cd x (OH) y polynuclear complexes) were formed at the initial stages of Cd(II) sorption and gradually transformed to CdCO 3 with time. In addition, Cd(II) formed Cd Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) on γ-Al 2 O 3 under various conditions, independent of temperature and Cd loadings. The formation of Cd hydroxide phases and Cd Al LDH could be ascribed to surface-induced precipitation because the bulk solution was undersaturated with respect to hydroxides. Cd Al LDH formation on the Al-bearing mineral here is rather surprising because typically this occurs with elements of ionic radii similar to that of Al 3+ ; this formation is unknown for metals such as Cd(II) with a much larger ionic radius. The thermodynamic feasibility of Cd Al LDH formation was further confirmed by laboratory synthesis of Cd Al LDH and density function theory (DFT) calculations. These results suggest that Cd precipitation on Al-bearing minerals can be an important mechanism for Cd immobilization in the natural environment. Additionally, the finding of Cd Al LDH formation on Al-bearing minerals and the thermodynamic stability of Cd Al LDH provides new insights into the remediation of Cd-polluted soils and aquatic systems.

A novel self-assembly method was developed to prepare a γ-Fe 2 O 3 /graphene oxide (GO) heterogeneous catalyst that showed excellent synergy between photocatalysis and Fenton-like reactions. The γ-Fe 2 O 3 /GO catalyst prepared on the iron plates demonstrated efficient and reproducible catalytic activities for water treatment . It takes only 80 min to degrade 50 mg L −1 methylene (MB) completely, which is the main non-biodegradable dye in wastewater from the textile industry . The heterogeneous catalyst is stable over a wide range of pH (from 2.0 to 10.2) for MB degradation, and can be easily extracted from solution and repeatedly used with little loss of catalytic activity. The high activity and stability of the catalyst system can be attributed to charge separation between γ-Fe 2 O 3 and GO, which could accelerate Fenton-like process and photocatalysis. In addition, the dominant reactive oxidant species responsible for the MB degradation, including the hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and holes (h + ), were trapped on the surface of the γ-Fe 2 O 3 /GO composite, as proved by a free-radical quenching experiment. The γ-Fe 2 O 3 /GO heterogeneous catalyst could potentially provide a solution for removal of non-biodegradable dyes from wastewater in the textile industry.

Series of gold and ceria supported γ-Al 2 O 3 catalysts were developed for the oxidative esterification of methacrolein with methanol. All the catalysts were prepared through one step deposition-precipitation method, and K 2 CO 3 and urea were used as precipitant, respectively. Au, CeO 2 and γ-Al 2 O 3 could self-assemble unique particle morphology during co-precipitation process and form semi-core shell or core shell structure after calcination . The relationship between catalytic reactivity and structural characteristics were analyzed by SEM, TEM, EDS, BET, XRD, XPS, etc. Among Au-CeO 2 /γ-Al 2 O 3 (K 2 CO 3 ), Au-Ce/γ-Al 2 O 3 (Urea) and Au/γ-Al 2 O 3 (Urea) catalysts with different active components and precipitant, the last two exhibited higher catalytic activity. Moreover, the Ce-doped catalysts shown higher stability than just Au supported on pure alumina. The active stability of the optimum Au-Ce/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst was evaluated with seven-time cyclic reactions exhibiting high stability and activity with the yield of MMA above 90%.

The molecular mechanisms underlying the cellular uptake of long-chain fatty acids and the regulation of this process have been debated in recent decades. Here, we established an intestinal barrier dysfunction model in mice and Caco2 cell line by Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and evaluated the fatty acid uptake capacity of the intestine. We found that LPS stimulation restricted the absorption of long chain fatty acid (LCFA), while Cathelicidin-WA (CWA) pretreatment facilitated this physiological process. At the molecular level, our results demonstrated that the stimulatory effects of CWA on intestinal lipid absorption were dependent on cluster determinant 36 and fatty acid transport protein 4, but not fatty acid–binding protein. Further, an enhanced intestinal barrier was observed in vivo and in vitro when CWA alleviated the fatty acid absorption disorder induced by LPS stimulation. Mechanistically, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR-γ) signaling was considered as a key pathway for CWA to enhance LCFA absorption and barrier function. Treatment with a PPAR-γ inhibitor led to impaired intestinal barrier function and suppressed LCFA uptake. Moreover, once PPAR-γ signaling was blocked, CWA pretreatment could not maintain the stability of the intestinal epithelial cell barrier or LCFA uptake after LPS stimulation. Collectively, these findings suggested that PPAR-γ may serve as a target for specific therapies aimed at alleviating fatty acid uptake disorder, and CWA showed considerable potential as a new PPAR-γ agonist to strengthen intestinal barrier function against fatty acid malabsorption.

Sol-gel process was modified by reverse micelles (RMs) for the preparation of γ-Al 2 O 3 ultrafiltration (UF) membranes and their applications in the efficient rejection of methyl blue and bovine serum albumin were explored. The optimized boehmite sol with a narrower particle size distribution and better sphericity was synthesized by using cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide RMs as microreactors and was dip-coated on α-Al 2 O 3 microfiltration substrates to prepare γ-Al 2 O 3 UF membranes. It was found that not only the sol particle size, it's distribution and morphology had also an important effect on the pore size, pore size distribution , porosity and pore volume of the membrane. Additionally, the as-prepared membranes with a MWCO of 8 kDa exhibited a narrow pore size distribution (4.8–6.8 nm), relatively high pure-water flux (30.4 L/(h m 2 bar)) and excellent rejection for bovine serum albumin and methyl blue with the maximum rejection rate of 96.2% and 96.8% respectively.

The placement of selenium (Se) atoms into polymers to achieve functional materials for diverse applications in adaptive and biomedical materials has attracted broad interest. However, the difficulty in creating well-defined Se-rich polymers is a critical limitation. In this work, we report the successful alternating and regioselective copolymerization of nonstrained γ-selenobutyrolactone with epoxides. Poly(selenide-alt-ester)s containing selenide and ester groups in each repeating unit are achieved under mild reaction conditions. The process mediated by the phosphazene base (P2)/alcohol at 25 °C exhibits high activity and living behavior, as evidenced by narrow molecular weight distributions (1.05–1.29) and switch on–off chain extension experiments. The nucleophilic attack of epoxides by selenol anions is the rate-determining step according to kinetic studies. The resultant Se-containing polyesters possess >99% alternating degree, >99% regioregularity, and programmable hydroxyl terminals. More importantly, these poly(selenide-alt-ester)s exhibit the initial thermal decomposition temperatures of up to 275 °C, low glass-transition temperatures of down to −59 °C, excellent solvability in common organic solvents, high refractive indexes (1.61–1.62), and good ionic conductivity (when doped with Li salt, 1.09 × 10–6 S/cm at 30 °C, 1.73 × 10–4 S/cm at 100 °C), indicating potential broad application prospects of these Se-rich polyesters.

Nanofibrous poly( l -lactic acid) (PLLA) microspheres are extensively studied to be used as cell carriers in the field of tissue engineering because the unique structure can promote cell proliferation and migration. But as injectable scaffold materials, PLLA microspheres easily run off to the soft tissue space because of the lack of cohesive force. It will affect the treatment efficiency and even cause additional inflammatory response. In order to overcome this disadvantage, superparamagnetic γ-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles assisted with oxidative polymerization of dopamine were used for surface modification of PLLA microspheres in this study. The results showed that this surface modification had no obvious cytotoxicity, and the modified microspheres possessed the ability to carry seed cells to controllably move to the defect sites with the guidance of magnetic field, which may be able to increase the repair efficiency. Moreover, the characteristic nanofibrous structure was not destroyed after modification, which was able to promote biological activity of cells. This work provides a novel way to produce superparamagnetic nanofibrous microspheres designed for cell microcarriers. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel and selective strategies for platform chemical production from renewable biomass are highly attractive in respect to value-added utilization of sustainable resources. In this study, a series of low-cost, commercially available, transition metal carbonates (Zr, Ni, Mg, Zn, and Pb) were investigated for catalytic transfer hydrogenation of levulinate esters to γ-valerolactone (GVL) via the cascade process of Meerwein–Ponndorf–-Verley (MPV) reduction and lactonization reaction. Among the selected catalysts, basic zirconium carbonate is the most active, with the highest turnover frequency (TOF) of 3.1 h–1 and a surface reaction rate of 0.21 mol m–2 h–1. At 453 K, 3.0 h, and 1.0 MPa N2, 100% ethyl levulinate conversion, 96.3% GVL yield, and 91.9% hydrogen donor utilization are observed due to the cooperative effect between acid (Mn+) and base (−OH) sites. Furthermore, this catalyst shows high recyclability under the optimized conditions, where a satisfactory catalytic activity is shown even after six consecutive runs.

A novel and effective method is proposed to prepare uniform γ-alumina microspheres with large pore volumes using a coaxial microchannel. In this process, the so-called “temperature/pH-induced gelation” method, in which methylcellulose (MC) and hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) are added to accelerate gelation of Al(OH)3 sol, is combined with microfluidics technology to ensure sphericity and dimensional homogeneity of the prepared microspheres. The influences of the sol concentration, the properties of pseudoboehmite (PB) used to obtain the sol, and the two-phase flow rates were investigated. By controlling the sol concentration at 10 wt % and the continuous to dispersed phase flow ratio at 14–50, 750–380-μm-diameter γ-alumina microspheres with uniform pore structures were synthesized using an Al(OH)3 sol obtained from PB3. The pore volume was 1.20 mL/g, and the crushing strengths were 8.19–16.67 N/mm2. Prepared at the maximum two-phase flow ratio, sample S9 exhibited the most uniform particle size of about 380 μm.

The purpose of this study was to develop a poly(γ-glutamic acid) (γ-PGA)-based hydrogel loaded with superoxide dismutase (SOD) to accelerate wound healing. First, γ-PGA was modified with taurine (γ-PGAS), and then the SOD-loaded γ-PGAS/γ-PGA hydrogel (SOD-PGAS/PGA-H) was prepared by cross-linking of ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether. The swelling behavior and water vapor transmission rate revealed that PGAS/PGA-H could create a moist environment for wound surface. In vitro kinetics of SOD release showed that SOD released from PGAS/PGA-H maintained high activity and SOD-PGAS/PGA-H effectively scavenged the superoxide anion. The results of our fibroblast proliferation experiments showed that PGAS/PGA-H had good cytocompatibility. The effects of SOD-PGAS/PGA-H on wound healing were examined in a Type I diabetic rat model with full-thickness wounds. Twenty-one days after grafted to wounds, SOD-PGAS/PGA-H exhibited a higher rate of wound healing than control group and showed increased collagen deposition and epithelialization. SOD-PGAS/PGA-H seems to promote better wound healing and thus might be a promising candidate for wound healing management. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132 , 42033.
